2 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

Today, 12/3/13, I had my 3rd window regulator go out in the past 12 months. Each occurrence has been on a different window, and each repair has cost from $400 - $600. The service advisors I've spoken to have all said this is a common problem in Volkswagen Beetle convertibles because the part is poorly engineered and they're surprised a recall has not been made. This poorly engineered part is not only a financial abuse to the consumer, but also a safety issue. If this happens when the convertible is down, then one is not able to put the top back up, which now does not only cost you a new window, but the loss of the car if it's stolen while unattended. Additionally what could happen, as it did in my case. The window made a noise on Sunday, this morning (Tuesday) I took my car in, the part won't be in until tomorrow or potentially Thursday. In the mean time, it's raining in my city and I live in apartments and have to park on the street. Therefore, my car runs the risk of not only getting stolen, but the interior being damaged if the plastic on the outside comes off during the heavy rain. Again, major inconvenience to the consumer, while the manufacturer not only pockets the customers car payment on a monthly basis, but is also making money in the service department with a vehicle that was produced by them with faulty parts in the first place. Finally, the window at any moment can fall into the door and shatter, which would make the broken window a health risk if the individual is in the vehicle when the window shatters; the driver or passenger could be injured by the glass. In conclusion, there seems to be multiple risk and consumer complaints on the same issue, it is ludicrous that a recall or permanent solution has not yet been determined.

3 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/29/2013

Rolled down back window on drivers side wont roll up just makes a noise.

4 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/29/2013

2005 vw Beetle convertible, pushed the button for all windows to open at the same time and the back drivers side window would not go back up. Made a grinding sound like scratching noise on glass. It just stuck there about half way opened. I have since taped it up with cardboard and duct tape for security reasons and not to get rain inside. Asked mechanic at vw and he said it is $600 if it's just the regulator much more if it is the motor. Also said they may have to replace the entire window. Really? I have read many, many reviews on this very same issue, too many to count actually. Something is obviously wrong, (like the manufacturer defect issue). I worry every day while at work someone will break in to my car, I've cleaned out the inside of everything and now resort to locking my compartments which I never have ever done before. A recall is necessary for all of us who love our Beetles, have taken such good care of them only to be subject to such events. Safety issues for this female Beetle owner has been compromised and this is not acceptable and should not be by those with the power to correct this for the safety of those of us suffering from the neglect of the vw manufacturer. I pray this falls on the eyes of someone with a conscious who puts people and their safety above profit. A recall for this very issue is needed and to return those of us to a safer driving experience and lifestyle.

5 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/09/2013

Rear window would not go up. Automatically went back down, and then I hear what sounds like glass breaking! think there are plastic parts down in window that were actually tearing up! had seen numerous complaints on this problem before and was hoping my bug was not a lemon like so many others! vw has seen this problem repeatedly, but still continues to do nothing but charge an astronomical amount to "fix" (put a bandage on it) ! love my bug, but this is ridiculous! seriously thinking of getting rid of it before something else happens!.

6 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

There seems to be an issue with the rear windows and rear window regulators in the new Beetles from 2003-2010. I have experienced and read numerous testimonials that indicate this is a design flaw that vw is making money repairing.

7 Power Window problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/25/2012

Window cable broke and whole frame had to be replaced instead of cable alone to the cost of $500 dealer said this happens all the time. Why should they not be responsible for an item that is defective?.

8 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/08/2012

The window regulator has failed. When I roll the window up it starts going slowly when it's almost all the way up and then it makes a squealing noise and then once it reaches the top it rolls back down by itself without me touching anything. This is a safety hazard because if there is inclement weather, I cannot get my window to stay rolled up. My car is not safe left with the window rolled all the way down. This is not just an issue that I am having. There a forums filled with people experiencing the same problems all with 2003 vw Beetles. It is a cheaply made part that has to be replaced professionally. It is not fair that everyone has to pay $300+ for repair that shouldn't happen this often in the first place.

9 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/22/2012

Driver side window would drop about 1. 5 cm when exit the vehicle but would not go back up. Was allowing water and outside debris to enter the vehicle. When I notified the dealer and my salesperson they said they will take care of it and call vw on my behalf. It has been more than a month and I have heard nothing. Some reviews online said they were able to have vw take it back/ buy it back. Frankly this would be the best solution as in va the rain and cold winds is just unbearable in the winter with the window unable to operate as it was designed to.

10 Power Window problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/17/2012

Car was shifting very hard, tires would squeal as shifting between 1-2 and 2-3rd gears. To replace the transmission it will be between 2-5000. 00 dollars we have had to replace window regulators, thermometer.

11 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

The drivers rear window went down and would not come back up.

12 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

My driver's window won't go all the way up after parking. It is supposed to lower just a hair when opened and close again once the door is shut. This lets rain in. Also when rolling up the driver's window you must inch it up in increments instead of all at once. It goes up about half way then sends itself back down.

13 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/30/2012

2005 vw Beetle convertible. Rear windows regulator/motors broke. Vw issued an extended warranty for front windows (7 years) rear windows have the same problem. Dealer wants $700. 00 per side to fix. Windows do not roll down on command. Often fall on their own after a bump in the road.

14 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/30/2012

Driver side rear window dropped and could not be raised. About 2 years ago the driver front window did the same thing.

15 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/28/2012

The driver and passenger windows do not go up or down on command when the button has been pressed. Once the window does go down (usually on its own) it is very difficult to get the windows back up. I feel this is a safety issue as it allows the elements (ie moisture) to enter the vehicle while it is parked and could contribute to further malfunctions of the electrical components that control other aspects of the car (electronic transmission, push button start, traction control, etc). Vw has been unresponsive to owners complaints to this issue (check youtube, twitter, and forums). Thank you.

16 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/12/2012

According to all the info I have gathered. It seems my car ,along with so many others have this same problem. It happens way too often for it not to be a major problem for the owners to pay for the repair. When it is a fault of the vw makers. My rear passenger window regulator is broken. Something should be addressed about this issue. Vw is responsible for the bad mechanical design of the windows in these vehicles. Why should we (as consumers)have to pay for their screw up?[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

17 Power Window problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

Defective rear power window regulators. Rear window stuck half open, unable to lock car.

18 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

I have three concerns about my new car. First and foremost is the window issue. I had the vx Beetle for about two weeks when the automatic windows on both driver's and passenger's sides either do not go up or down all the way as they are supposed to. They stop intermittently and take several tries to either close or open. Safety issue. Dealer says vx knows and is working on fix. Vx says the same but I have had the car three months now and no fix (and no fix in sight it seems). Also, fuel gauge would not register as full. A part for this issue has been ordered and is in. It will be installed in a few days and hopefully addresses this problem although other consumers have posted that this doesn't always work. Lastly, my air conditioner blows warm air unless you turn the dial completely to max. Any adjustment backward feels like the heater is on. When I turn off the ac and put on the fan with vents open wanting to get fresh air (55 degrees out), air warmer than outside is blowing in. It's difficult to adjust the interior temperature when you have either ice cold or heat and are hesitant to mess with the windows!!!.

19 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/12/2012

Both rear window regulators have become defective. Do not work.

20 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/11/2012

Left rear window regulator stopped working in July 2012. In October 2012 the right rear window regulator stopped working. Both have to be replaced. Car is very well maintained but was bought used. Vw dealer covers nothing but charges an enormous amount to fix. Reading other blogs there are many, many with the same issue. There should be a recall and vw should be responsible for replacing the rear window regulators. The rear windows not working means you can not put the convertible top down without risking further damage to the car.

21 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

Drivers window does not function properly. Will at times not go up or down. Dealer states this is a known problem and that there is currently no fix for the issue.

22 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

Left rear window lifter does not close completely. Only goes up 2/3 of the way. Reference odi complaint 10282664.

23 Power Window problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 06/23/2012

This the 3rd window regulator to fail. One door and now both rear regulators.

24 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/18/2012

Recurring issues with door power windows. Takes approximately 6-7 attempts to secure or roll them up after opening; unsure if they will completely fail and eventually not roll up at all. Safety issue concerns: unable to roll up windows against adverse weather conditions and freeway debris, (rain and debris can damage electrical circuitry located next to door and debris can injure driver; rain/wind/debris can impair drivers visibility if window cannot be rolled up properly); in addition, in an emergency situation that would require sheltering in place in this vehicle; such as an assault, robbery etc. The inability for the consumer to roll up their windows presents a real life-safety threat. After having researched on-line and spoken to the dealership which I purchased my vehicle from, this serious problem has been known for approximately a year, and I was told (4 months ago) that I would be placed on a back-stock order list for the revised electrical modem that would resolved this problem. I have called for follow-up information and an eta on the part. They were unable to provided me with new information or an eta. This is clearly a problem that 1) they (manufacture and dealership) cannot fix 2) have not found a fix for (manufacturer) and have been lying to the consumer about (manufacturer/dealership) 3) have not elevated to the proper priority level to find a fix for (manufacturer).

25 Power Window problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

1) inferior automatic transmission pump valve assembly caused very hard down and up shifting that could startle the driver. It was replaced at owner's expense. 2) left side rear window regulator failed and was replaced at time of purchase (Feb. 2012). Right side rear window regulator has failed July 2012 and must be replaced at owner's expense.

26 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

Window has stopped working for the second time. Repairs have already been made to 1 rear driver s side window. Now it's the passengers side rear window.

27 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/31/2012

Both drivers side and passenger side windows experiencing issue when auto-closing. Windows will not close using the "auto up" feature. Windows retract to the down position 2-3 times before switching to manual mode by default. Window motors must be reset for "auto up/down" after each time.

28 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

Rear window regulators went out.

29 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

Left rear window replaced under warranty 3/11, warranty ended 5/11, right regulator goes out 8/11. Every time the doors open all 4 window regulators activate. Aprox 100 to 200 cycles separate the failures.

30 Power Window problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/21/2011

The power window do not go up right. When window are down trying to put up window they go up and stop one third of the way and spring back down push switch to go up window go up half up spring back down this go on two to three time if you hold switch in up they go up and smell like smoke. The dealer said v. W. Is trying to correct this problem but at this time there is no know fix . I think this is a safety problem not being able two roll window up right a way if we had to in a emergency not to say the smoke smell.

31 Power Window problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

Both rear windows have stopped working. (second one is completely down and does not go up) vw dealer advises that the regulators have to be replaced and due to the "design" of the car to have this done would require taking out the back seat for a total of $1085 with parts & labor. I have searched the issue online and have read numerous articles where other vw Beetle owners have had the same issue. A recall for this costly and repeated issue should be passed. Please help.

32 Power Window problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

Power window failure on 2000 new Beetle.

33 Power Window problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/22/2010

I have a 2004 vw Beetle convertible 2. 0l GLS and both front window regulators are broken at the same time. I pulled one of the doors apart to see what was broken and it is a plastic piece that holds the motor to the regulator. There is no reason for this part to break and especially for both sides to break about the same time. The plastic part that is needed is not sold separate, the whole window regulator assembly has to be purchased, so to fix the windows will cost a lot of money.

34 Power Window problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/03/2010

I bought a used 2004 new Beetle convertible and lowered the back window and would not raise again was told the back window regulator went out and is costing me 1200. 00. Not covered under extended warranty or by volkswagon. I am finding out this was a big problem with these cars after the fact.

35 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/31/2010

I have a 2003 vw new Beetle convertible and both rear window regulators continually break. I was told that there is an active campaign going on with your agency to get this item covered as a recall by Volkswagen. The item or complaint number that was given me is 10282664. These window regulators are of a defective design and should be covered by vw. I don't feel that they should prosper by selling the regulator kits that are necessary due to their faulty design. This will be the second time that I am replacing these items in a 7 year old car.
