I bought the new Beetle not even a month and I noticed a jerking in the transmission. I found out using specialized websites for enthusiasts that Volkswagen issue letters to owners of new Beetles in 2010 informing that tons of owners complained about the hard shift they were experiencing in the automatic transmission oftheir new Beetle. Vokswagen offered to extend the warranty on the transmission valve body. The models affected spans from 2003 to 2008. In other words, volks sold faulty cars withing this time range and only recognized later in 2010 about the issue. However, the valve body failure in the transmission is across the board and a recall should have been issued for the range of 2003-2008. The component was designed to fail by design. Not even the replacement would fix it because it would happen again. Imagine the danger when there is a hard-shift and the car starts to jerk and changing gears erratically ? imagine this happening on i95 or any other highway. Vw just extended the warranty but a recall is needed here. I called vw and they are refusing to fix it saying it is an old car and warranty is expired, but the truth is since 2003 the hard shift condition existed. It takes time for the valve body to fail but it will fail. I have other cars, but when I noticed the jerk I investigated. I attached the letter that I obtained from the new Beetle. Org site and there there is a detail explanation how the automatic transmission will fail due to the design.

The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle felt as if it were in neutral. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road, placed the gear shifter in park and then back into drive, and was able to resume driving. The contact stated that she had to repeat the same procedure five times until she reached her destination. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to perrysburg auto mall (26875 n dixie hwy, perrysburg, OH 43551, phone number: (419) 874-4331) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000.
The transmission mechanically failed on 3 June 2013. Prior to it failing I had taken the vehicle to three different vw repair shop over a four year period, due to the car suddenly downshifting all the way to first gear. The car will drive normally for about 30 minutes, then start having this downshifting issue, I pull over and let the car cool a few minutes then all is normal again for a short period of time. Of course with the downshifting the tranny tends to overheat quickly. I wanted to get the oil changed in the tranny, but all repair centers said, "it's a sealed system and never needs and oil change;" also the vw repair techs test drove the car and analyzed it, could find nothing wrong. My experience with vw service on everything is, their mechanics are parts changers only and don't have any real diagnostic capability to find the problem, just replace parts until they fix the problem at the customers expense; I've spent about $10,000 on repairs for a/c, brakes, transmission, etc. Finally, the car failed fortunately across the street from a mr. Transmission shop. Per mr. Transmission specialist, the tranny failed due to lubrication failure probably from over heating and high milage; so much for the "never needs an oil change policy. " mr. Transmission rebuilt the tranny (out $3400), and state the problem is electrical not the transmission, and vw is famous for electrical issues and always have been. Needless to say mr. Transmission has not been able to find the problem, and they have rebuilt the tranny twice just to make sure the problem is not in the transmission. Word to the wise, never buy a vw; I'll never own another one.

Transmission suddenly failed!.
My 2005 vw Beetle's transmission failed at 49,000 miles. Vw has an extended warranty item on the transmission valve body that they acknowledge can fail which had failed on my vehicle. However I'm being told that my transmission has also failed. Vw is claiming that the failed valve body did not cause damage to the transmission and that I would have to pay for the transmission replacement myself. This is a dealer maintained, commuter car that is unaltered and under 50,000 miles that I have had other professional mechanics look at and they do not see how vw can claim the failed valve body would not cause this kind of damage and eventual failure. We have contacted vw of America multiple times and they refuse to take responsibility for their product.

Volkswagen Beetle, 2005 model with 105000 miles. Transmission failing causing hard shifting and slipping gears resulting in car lurching, sudden down shifts and pausing unexpectedly in traffic. Caused rearend impact when vehicle failed to accelerate. As told by the vw dealer this is a very common problem with the new Beetle 6spd tiptronic transmission, one that vw will not admit nor correct. I have been researching this issue for some time finding that there is no question as to whether a new Beetle owner will have transmission problems rather when the problem will begin. While I have not been able to determine how many if any accidents have been caused by this issue I do know there is a great concern amongst these vehicle owners that accidents will occur. Vw should be forced to recall all these vehicles and correct this problem.

2004 vw Beetle transmission failure at 77k miles. Transmission needs to be replaced/rebuilt at a cost of $4,500.
Transmission failure on a 2000 vw Beetle at 60,000 miles.
Transmission failure- vehicle down shifted hard and would not come out of 1st gear during heavy traffic on highway almost causing rear end collision. After turning car off and turning vehicle back on it proceeded for about 5 miles before doing the same. Car was towed and transmission was rebuilt but the car continues to do the same. Recently traveling on highway during rush hour, slowing down for traffic that was at a stand still the vehicle downshifted hard causing the car behind me to slam on his brakes causing an accident behind me.

The transmission shifts fails to shift at the proper engine rpm. The problem gets worse as the transmission gets hot. When it does shift it hits very hard, jerking the vehicle out of control. Secondly, the failure shift will leave you stranded on the side of the road placing you in harms way should this happen at the wrong place. The vehicle is not operational due to this uncontrollable shifting malfunction. It is not possible to predict when this malfunction will occur and could lead to bodily injury or possible death.

2005 vw Beetle with 86,000 miles diagnosed with internal transmission failure (metal is shearing off internally). I have been advised by two mechanics that this is problem with this model year. Ii contacted vw and they would not acknowledge the problem. Suggested repairs could total $9,000.
Transmission hard to shift and jerking at all speeds then locks in 5th gear. Repair shop wants $6,000. To repair. Have searched for help in this matter went to vw dealership but was told don't worry that jerking was normal. Now I have lost the use of my 2004 vw red convertible Beetle. My wife is heart broken. The car is useless without a transmission. The dealership could have prevented the problems on the onset when we first told them of the problem. She was so impressed when we purchased the car new that an extended warranty was bought on the inset with the car. When the transmission failed we found out that the warranty company has since went out of business the year before in 2008 and was never informed of this fact.
I purchased my vehicle from Volkswagen around February of 2008. My car began to show signs of transmission failure shortly after and began to get worse in June of 2008. It began gradually from skipping gears to jumping into neutral and losing power while driving. The failure occurs very often now. I cannot drive my car for more than 15 minutes without being stranded on the side of the road for a short period. I noticed that as soon as the transmission warms up from driving, the transmission goes into neutral, and the dashboard lights turn on. Luckily my job is really close to my house. My boyfriend began doing some research into this problem and noticed that this is common in newer Volkswagen models that involve the dsg transmission, which resulted in a recall. I have a 6 speed techtonic transmission and the same symptoms take place. We have looked for quotes on replacement of sensors, rebuilt transmissions, but we are still trying to figure out what it may be because transmission work is really expensive. This is not normal for a car with way less than 100,000 miles. I do not understand why this would be happening to a car that has been well maintained.
I have a 2001 vw new Beetle. The transmission keeps failing, lurching, skidding, & the dealer & mechanics have done/found out nothing about it. I am one of thousands experiencing this problem with no reply from vw. I have never received anything about the recalls they order. My car is totally unsafe & I have put $5,500 in it to be told I need more work. They are taking no responsibility & we that own these cars are forced to drive them unsafely. My car jumps & skids forward from a stop. It goes so slow before the skidding that cars almost rear end me. The car cannot be traded in broken & vw refuses to address any problems we all have. My mom has a 2005 new Beetle that is beginning to lurch and stall out on the freeway & during regular driving. We own 2 of these cars and never receive any recall info and we are forced to pay $5,700 each to fix the faulty transmission, $900 each for sensors, who know what for computers that all fail and cause our vehicles to be extremely unsafe. My car right now will not reverse, it only drives forward. Vw needs to be forced to recall there faulty unsafe cars for not only those that drive them but for others on the road. This is a huge safety issue for drivers and anyone on the road. I should not have to fear for my life when driving a vehicle I have maintained and the maker will not recall the problems it knows these vehicles have. They are not safe and all of us that own them are stuck paying thousands of dollars to fix a problem vw is aware of and will do nothing about. It is scary and dangerous to be a vw new Beetle owner.

The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen new Beetle GLS. The contact stated that the transmission failed. The contact mentioned that when the gears were shift from park into drive there was a brief delay on the vehicle acceleration. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the transmission had a three second delay which was considered normal but as a safety precaution the transmission fluid and filter needed to be replaced. The remedy failed to repair the problem. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000 and the current mileage was 97,000.
