This vw Beetle a six speed automatic. Any time I drive slower than 40 miles per hour (after the car is warmed up - 15 minutes or so) it starts to lurch between gears - both when accelerating and decelerating. Speeding up, it revs high and then feels like it jumps into the next gear. Slowing down, it jerks so hard it feels like I'm being rear-ended. One time, as I was parking it, it clunked so loudly when I shifted from r to d, I thought the transmission was going to drop to the ground!
it seems the worst going between 2nd and 3rd gear. I feel like I'm being driven around by someone who doesn't know how to drive a stick shift. But it's an automatic. I'm being charged to remanufacture the entire transmission. It will cost $6,700! I only bought the car for $8,400. This 2004 car will cost me $16,100 by the time it's drivable. (by the way - your drop down for vehicle components doesn't work in ie 9. ).

The contact owns a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that the vehicle was shifting abnormally hard. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer advised that the transmission would need to be replaced. The contact had the transmission replaced yet the failure persisted. The contact believed that the transmission was not the cause of the problem but the vehicle computer. The failure mileage was 49,000.

2003 vw Beetle. . . Transmission "lurches" forward. . . Not safe. Vw extended warranty by only 7 years. That excluded any 2003's sold during normal model year. Only had 54,ooo miles. Cost over $3,000. 00 to fix. How can Volkswagen know there is a problem and then exclude vehicles like this?.
Bought car for daughter Feb. 2011. The gear seems to get hung up between 2nd and 3rd then the car will barely move. Sometimes when it goes in to gear it lunges forward. My daughter almost had a wreck trying to turn and the gear got hung up and stalled in traffic.
2006 new Beetle tdi transmission (dsg) failure. Can suddenly slow and operated at high rev's. Lucky I did not get rear ended.

I had previously complained about my 2003 Beetle on this website. Somehow my car seems to have somehow repaired it self !! it is no longer shifting hard when it shifts and its no longer lurching or pausing as it shifts. Im not sure why, im just really relieved!.
Transmission shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th. Has even stalled on occasion. Has less than 70,000 miles. Transmission hits so hard it feels as though it will fall out of the car. I have stopped driving it due to this dangerous situation. Can not afford the 4,000 - 7000 dollars quoted to replace.
Vw Beetle 2003, 61,000 miles, I noticed it shifted hard shortly after I purchased it this past April; jerks while shifting between first and second, second and third, etc; went to vw after I received the warranty extension - transmission valve body letter (received in December 2010, but they are unwilling to cover the cost because the extension is to cover 7 years, and my car is 6 months too old; they've admitted the problem but refuse to fix it.
Hard shifting transmission. Wv replaced valve body. Caused trans failure.
After warming up, the car's transmission jerks very badly, and runs wildly before shifting. The mileage is just 75k. It is really dangerous especially driving on the highway due to the hard shift. Many other owners have similar experience. Vw must be responsible for this horrible defect.
For the last 6 months my 2003 automatic vw Beetle convertible with 56k miles has been shifting hard (lurch feeling) intermittently going up or down hills. When the mechanic inspected it the transmission readout said it was fine and this was normal wear and tear. On November 15, 2010 while driving in traffic at about 15mph, the transmission stopped grabbing and went into neutral. I was able to shift it to the tiptronic system to drive the vehicle safely out of the way. Upon inspection the vw dealer stated that they did not know the exact cause and only direction they got from vw national was to replace the transmission completely for $7k.
Thomas walker 16 featherbed lane branford, CT 06405 203. 415. 5926 tom. Walker828@gmail. Com vw case#110008190 I received a warranty extension letter from Volkswagen of America in November 2010 extending the warranty on my 2004 vw Beetle for hard shifting caused by the valve body. My Beetle experienced the problems described in the letter. I submitted the form for reimbursement for repairs made to the valve body. My claim for reimbursement was refused by martin a. Customer care advocate. He stated that the repair would not be covered because the extension cover repairs to the valve body only. I am seeking reimbursement for the valve body only. When the repair shop inspected my Beetle for the hard shifting issue, they also inspected the transmission and found excessive metal debris in the “pan. The repair shop told me that they recommended repairing the transmission at the same time as replacing the valve body. I could have elected not to have repaired the transmission at that time. I am being told that my claim is being refused because the replacement of the valve body was related to the repair of the transmission which it clearly was not. Vw offered this extended warranty and I feel as though they are trying to find any excuse to not fulfill this offer. I contacted vw customer care on Friday afternoon February 25th to explain that the valve body replacement was not related to the rebuild of the transmission and was very frustrated when the advocate repeatedly interrupted me as I attempted to explain this to her. My daughter and I have purchased multiple vehicles from vw over the years and are trying to understand why vw is denying this valid claim, we would like to be able to continue to be loyal vw owners and are hopeful that vw will do the right thing for us. Please review the documents that I have included and i’m sure you will be in agreement that this claim should be approved. Please contact the responsible parties.
At approximately 75k miles, 2005 vw Beetle began violent lurching upon slowing down, resulting in unsafe driving condition. Read numerous complaints about transmission issues with this model/year - local dealer denied knowledge of this problem. Vehicle taken to independent repair shop and is undergoing a transmission rebuild quoted at approximately $3,500. 00.
Transmission in 2005 vw Beetle with 60,000 miles on it is suddenly failing to shift. Research indicates this is a well known issue yet vw refuses to stand behind their product. I explained that the safety aspect of this was not acceptable. Their response was to over to replace the transmission at a cost of more than the current value of the car.
K I recently bought a 99 vw Beetle and now all of a sudden my car jerks when it hits like 3000rpm and it idles higher then it should.

I am having transmission problems on my 2000 Beetle. I was told the transmission does not need replaced but I feel otherwise. When I am driving my vehicle will pull back very hard and then jump and shoot me forward. I am afraid that this will cause a bad accident.

2005 vw Beetle with major transmission problems. The tranny will not shift on time and when it does it jerks the car. It will also stall during acceleration and leaves me stranded in the middle of the intersection. This is a safety issue as the car will not move when you need it too. The issue seems to get worse more and more.
I bought a used 2003 vw Beetle conv. In 2006. I immediately reported to the service dept. That it there was some jerking happening when the car changed gears and they told me that this was normal for vw. Recently the jerking got really bad, and almost caused an accident because the transmission hesitated in the middle of an intersection and then I could not regain any speed. I was very close to being hit by an oncoming car. The replacement cost will be around 5800. My mechanic talked to vw and they told him they were aware of the problem and have fixed it in the newer models.
2003 vw bug stalls when hitting around 35 miles per hour, almost was rear ended - takes a while to start back moving but is sluggish. Took it to the mechanic and he said it was the transmission. I only have 80,000 miles on this car - how could this be the transmission.
I have a 2004 vw bug with 51,000 miles . The car started jerking so hard its almost caused several accidents to me and others ! vw says it needs a new 7000 dollar transmission! they wont admit the problem is of epic proportions with this model . It's all over the internet. My car has also had the window motor go out and many parts just fall off such as seatbelt latch cover. These cars should be recalled for safety!please help me get vw to fix this problem! [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Transmission bad.
Occaisional violent shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third gear - automatic transmission. Very dangerous in intersections. Vw had a recall to fix this problem, I was notified by them last month- vw said my car was 1 year too old - can't afford to fix on my own - car is worthless with thiis problem.

The car surges when shifting causing the wheels to spin out on wet surfaces.
Vw bug 2003, 87,000 miles, original owner. Transmission shifting rough. Dealer said we needed to have the "valve body" checked ($1413). If this wasn't the problem would need to replace the transmission ($5761). I do not understand why it costs so much before we even know if the transmission is bad, or why the transmission is going on such a relatively young car.
The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle tdi. While driving 55 mph the vehicle lost power to the transmission. The vehicle starting slowing down, causing her to drive to the side of the road. She waited a few minutes, put the vehicle in park and was able to continue driving to her destination at a lower speed. The contact stated that the failure had occurred several times in one day. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the mechantronic unit needed to be replaced. The dealer ordered the part. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileages were 63,000.
2003 Volkswagen Beetle convertible automatic was "hard shifting" after warming up for 15-20 minutes from 1st to 2nd gear, and down from 4th all the way to 1st. This issue started after 75,000 miles. Fix = replace valve body. . . Around $2000. I was told that this is a very common issue, and that vw has addressed this defect in newer models. This seems to be a manufacturer defect if it is a known, common, and fixed problem by vw.
I have vw 03' Beetle and transmission is going out early. Jerks between gears, and feels unsafe to drive on road.
I have been having a problem with my 2004 Volkswagen Beetle transmission. It has been intermittently jerking and stalling. I was driving slowly through a doctor's office parking lot very mindful of pedestrians when the car unexpectedly jerked forward and I nearly hit a pedestrian. It happened again at a cross walk where I was slowing down to stop but before I did stop the car downshifted abruptly and had I not had a firm grip on the break I would have hit children in the cross walk. I have been unable to drive my car because it is not safe and Volkswagen will not address the problem even though there are hundreds of pages online of similar cases. It is just a matter of time before vw transmissions are the cause of a serious injury if it has not already happened. Very frightening and very expensive to fix.
The contact owns a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle. When the brakes were applied and the vehicle came to a complete stop the vehicle violently lunged forward. Upon accelerating the vehicle began to hesitate when changing gears. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be examined for the cause of failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure continued to occur intermittently. The frequency of the failures had increased over time. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that when shifting from park to drive, the vehicle would hesitate and stall. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the contact was advised that the transmission would need replacing. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 96,000.
Around 80,000 my 2005 vw Beetle began shifting really hard. It jerks between gears, and has recently been getting stuck in first and third gear. Sometimes when I drive the car it is fine, but other times, it has left me stranded on the side of the freeway. The level of unreliability is really dangerous, because I never know if it's going to speed up like it's supposed to. I'm in constant fear that I will get rear ended or stuck in the middle of an intersection. I've taken it to two mechanics and talked to two transmission specialists and all of them have said that they won't work on a vw Beetle's transmission and that I need to take it to the dealer. I've tried aiding the problem with a new battery, but that hasn't helped. Other complaints online (300 on townhall-talk. Edmunds. Com) have stated that repairs for this problem are $5,000-$7,000 and that it hasn't always fixed the problem.
Our 2002 vw transmission went out @ 75,000 miles with no notice. Just one day it would not back up. Then it was almost like it jumped into reverse and then when we put it in drive you could just tell it was not right. We limped it around from place to place getting opinions on what was wrong and getting estimates on repair. Had one garage take the cover off side of transmission seeing metal shavings was when we got it replaced. That replacement lasted a total of 3 days, it was used with only 23000 miles on it and only lasted 3 days. It just stopped in the middle of road and would no go into any gear. Replaced that one with another ( both were fdf transmissions) and now the speedometer is off x 8-13 mph, the rpm are running high around 2800 to 3000 @ 55 -60 mph. Fuel mileage is down cut in half. Have taken it to a vw dealer and was told there were no codes anywhere and they did not know what was wrong or why these problems were happening. This tells me there is a big problem somewhere with vw transmissions and someone needs to inquire into this. The internet is full of vw transmission problems.
