36 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

I have a complaint against Volkswagen of America about my 2004 automatic new Beetle convertible transmission. I recieved a warranty extension for a skipping transmission. A year ago the Volkswagen dealership reccomended that I replace the entire transmission to fix the problem, which I did for $6,500. 00. The new extended warranty said I could be reimbursed for work done, I filled out all the paperwork an had copies of the original work requests and receipts and sent them in as instructed. I have since recieved a letter stating that I do not qualify because I had the entire transmission replaced (as reccomended) and not just the valves. It is a catch 22 and unfair as I just followed the dealers reccomendation in getting the car repaired.

The transmission in my 2004 Volkswagen Beetle convertible is defective. It slams into gear from 2 to 3 and I have been told to fix the problem will cost approximately $6000. Also the rear window will not roll up and the tail light on the driver's side has gone out therefore creating turn signal problems. 43 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

Owner of a 05 Beetle. Transmission issues started at 60,000 miles. Put in a lot of money on repairs without replacing the transmission to be told afterwards the trans had to be replaced. Looked online and a lot of 05' Beetles are experiencing the same effects as early as 30,000 miles!! the car is fine for the first 15 mins than it jerks violently into 3 & 4th gear. The jerking gets so bad it feels as if I had been rear ended. I get panic attacks especially at stale green lights or intersections in general. I never received a recall ever on my car and noticed online a recall on the airbags went into affect on Apr 08 which my air bag has been out. I have paid $15,000 and still have $14,500 to pay off in the next 3 years with a payment of $400 a month!!! I can not afford to buy a new trans for my car. All these 05 Beetles are defective and very dangerous to drive due to their trans failing and very low mileage. I have always kept up with oil changes, trans flushes, new filters you name it. I can not believe that the "car of my dreams" gives me anxiety attacks just to drive it. Driving is one of my many modes of transport everyday! please help vw owners with 05' Beetles get our cars fixed, I am paying a lot of money for a car that I am terrified to drive. Thank you for your time.

46 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

2004 vw Beetle convertible automatic transmission 2. 0 liter engine. When slowing down, automatic transmission jerks from 5th gear down to 3rd gear, severely affecting braking. Vw dealership, where purchased the car, and which has provided all regularly scheduled service, advised transmission is sealed, can't replace fluids, can't fix, and that the car needs a new transmission. Only 121k highway miles. Replacement will cost over $6k. According to edmunds carspace. Com this problem is rampant with vw Beetles. Dangerous situation deserves a recall by vw America.

47 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I currently own a 2005 vw Beetle with 96,000 miles. Before me, the car was owned by my parents since it was bought in 2005. About one year ago, it began to violently jerk between first and second gear after about 20 minutes of city driving. When accelerating from a stop light or stop sign, the car would stall, then buck forward as if I was being rear-ended. I have taken the car to aamco, plus 3 additional transmission specialists in that time. To date, I have spent $1,100 to have the transmission serviced and the shifter replaced. The problem has only gotten worse and the car now violently jerks from second gear into third gear and hesitates on the highway when shifting between fifth and sixth gear. In stop and go traffic, I've nearly been rear-ended twice in 2010 alone. This is a daily occurrence. To date, Volkswagen has essentially refused to stand behind its product. Though the Volkswagen group of America has extended me a 7-years or 100,000-miles warranty, douglas Volkswagen, the dealership from which the car was bought in new jersey refuses to replace the valve-body (the part covered under warranty) and has recommended I put a new $8,000 transmission in the car. They claim the transmissions made after 2008 do not have the problems 2003 through 2007 models had. Regardless, they have not tried to replace the cars valve-body, which is a part of the transmission. They seem to find it appropriate that I replace the defective transmission out of pocket at a cost higher than the car is presently worth. For that reason I have registered a complaint with Volkswagen group of America. Many new Beetle owners complain that they have also encountered similar resistance from Volkswagen and have been pushed to pay for new transmissions only to realize the problem persists after thousands of dollars have already been spent. The company has made feeble efforts to correct the problem. I hope NHTSA will assist consumers presently being politicked by vw.

48 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen new Beetle convertible. When he tried to place the vehicle in "drive" or shift gears they locked between 3rd and 4th gear. The vehicle also lost speed while driving and the dashboard illuminated displaying all of the gears at once ( p, r, n, d, s,). A mechanic stated that the failure could be the transmission or the tip tronic system. The manufacturer stated that since there were no related recalls, they would not be responsible for the repairs. The current and failure mileages were 124,000.

52 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

2002 turbo vw Beetle. Seems to be jerking when shifting into gear. Last week it jerked me forward quite hard. Scary!! car has 70,000 miles. I see there is alot of people with this same problem. I've spent 1200. 00 in the last year on various repairs. As I saw with other complaints, a/c stops working and then this. Wondering if this is a safety issue with the seriousness of this jerking affect. Jerking now has gotten harder and is everytime it shifts into gear. This is an automatic! when recently taken into a vw shop they did a computer scan on it and nothing comes up. Various hoses, water pump, thermo reader have been replaced.

Failure Date: 12/16/2008

2003 vw Beetle shifts so very hard between 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear it feels like the car is going to break. Took to dealership to perform a diagnostic. They said it was the transmission gasket. I replaced it, problem still exists. Driver's side window rolls down on its own. Passenger side window hits the top (when putting it up) then rolls down. Dealership says this is a safety feature.

58 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/12/2008

I received a recall about my back or break light. Made an apt. With heritage vw in georgia. I drove from leesburg al. To the dealership. They change the light and told me a belt has to be replaced. I know nothing needs replacement because my son ( a mechanic ) does all the maintenance in my vw. I told the them I will talk to my son and will get back with them. I had a hard time staring the car, but did not pay any attention because I was in a hurry to get out of there. I was on hwy 20 when every thing went crazy with my car. Lost my cruise control, lost power, won't start. So I called heritage and ask what they did with the car. They want me to bring it back to them, knowing it can't be driven. I feel they sabotage my car, they messed up my car so much, I paid over $3000. 00 for it to work. I kept the receipt just in case I might need it as proof. I received another recall last week it's hard to get burnt twice in a row.

I bought my 99 Beetle in October of 2007 and the day that I got the car the oil light came on and I took it back they had it for one month they replaced the motor and wire cluster. When I finally got it back about two weeks passed and I was driving on the interstate and my speedometer went from 0 to 120 and then the care lost power on the middle lane of the road. I took it back and they replaced the transmission I have tried numerous times to get them to take the car back and they wont. After I got it back that time the heater stopped working and the speedometer will not go above 40 when I told them this they said they would not fix it that it was my problem. Yesterday my mileage, speedometer, and gas gage stopped working my check engine light came on. And I don't know what to do if you know any one who could help me with these problems please let me know.

My 2003 Volkswagen Beetle, with under 50,000 miles on it will shift dangerously hard. When it shifts into 1st or 2nd gear, it shifts with a slam and lurches forward. There is a pause before it shifts which makes it very dangerous due to oncoming traffic, instead of moving forward when it should there is that pause while it lurches down and slams into gear. It does this on a regualr basis.

61 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Beetle

My car is a 2004 vw Beetle. It only has over 48,000 miles. The car began to violently shift gears. Vw service stated it needed the transmission replaced and quoted me $7,000. 00. I now have it at a transmission specialist who is rebuilding it and it will cost approximately $3,000. I have a rental car that when all is said and done will be an additional $400. 00. Vw has a monopoly on their cars. I have read on-line people who have had similar problems. How is it fair to the consumer in this economy for Volkswagen not take ownership of their defective cars and shift the responsibility on the unknowing consumer?.

70 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 03/20/2002

While driving the car I noticed the speedometer & odometer weren't working (mileage froze at 26,139). The gas gauge was not working either. Then the check engine light came on and the airbag light. Brought into dealership and was told there were 19 failures when it was tested on their computer. Dealership claims the transmission needs parts replaced. (will be covered under powertrain warranty possibly). Still waiting on parts. They said after they replace parts of transmission they will let me know what else needs to be done and how much it will cost me. The standard warranty ended March 2001. The vehicle has low mileage (26,139). The battery had to be replaced last year. Many times the car wouldn't start and had to be jumped. The check engine light came on the first year I had the car and the dealership claimed it was a sensor problem.
