2 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/21/2019

Car will shut off while driving around town or cruising on the highway (very dangerous) once fuel tank drops to 1/4 tank. I believe it to be faulty fuel pump design.

3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/25/2018

I started smelling fuel inside my car, and I replaced the gas cap. The smell kept getting stronger and it gave me headaches while driving. Today I opened up the back seat to expose the fuel pump and the pump leaks and from the top of the fuel pump where the connectors and it fills up with liquid gasoline. This is a major fuel safety that can cause my vehicle to rapidly be engulfed by fire.

4 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

Rust on fuel filter housing discovered during 60k mile fuel filter change of 2015 Golf tdi (see photo). Told this can lead to potential major damage to high pressure fuel pump if particles come off. Only use high-quality diesel so not sure how this happened.

7 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/23/2016

At less than 20,000 miles the glow plug light started coming on while driving at highway speeds and then the vehicle loses power, dropping down to about 30mph. Shutting engine off corrects but will reoccur next time vehicle is started after being parked for the day. Then the check engine light and service now lights also come on. Took to vw dealer, after 4 hours told it was a fuel problem with metal in the fuel. A sample must be sent to vws lab and it will take weeks for an answer. They are presumptively blaming bad fuel and will not cover under warranty. I believe the fuel pump is the source of the metal in the fuel as there has been a bearing squeal noise for about 2 weeks before this happened. I don't have any documents to attach as they still have the vehicle at the dealership.

8 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/21/2016

Driving at highway speed (60mph) engine shut down abrubtly and glow plug warning light came on. This resulted in having to coast across three lanes of traffic with difficulty in steering and braking to narrow shoulder area. Engine would crank over but not restart. Vehicle towed to dealer. Diagnosis is high pressure fuel pump failure, a known issue with these vehicles.

9 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 05/25/2016

Glow plug light came on and engine lost power. Engine would not restart. Tow to dealer and they replaced the high pressure fuel pump and other parts. Cost of warranty repair was about $7000. 00.

10 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

The high pressure fuel pump failed at 130,000 miles costing $5000 to replace the high pressure fuel pump and 4 injectors. This is a diesel engine, so 130,000 highway miles is nothing. I have had multiple diesel powered cars and trucks in the past that have gone passed 300k miles before a major repair was needed. This was supposed to be a "economy car" as per what the salesman stated. I do not know of any other vehicle that cost's $5000 to replace a high pressure fuel pump. $5000 is 1/3 the value of the car. The car stalled on me in the middle of a intersection with my kids in the car. Recommended maint on the car has always been done at the correct time and miles. I have found numerous case's on the tdi forum that many other vw tdi owners have had the same problem, some even twice. This is a serious safety problem and not to mention but a serious misleading of the public in what a economy car" should be. So with all this being said now, I have to add that I can not afford this "economy car" any longer as that I cant trust it to be safe and reliable to drive. Recently, I have tried to trade this car in the various new car dealers on a more simplified safe vehicle to no avail. The dealers have all told me that they would take the car in on trade, but would give me only at the most $1000 on a trade because they stated they can not sell it as used with the dieselgate black cloud on this car. So I am on the hook to Volkswagen of America still making payments on a car that imo is unsafe to drive, and that has no resale value due to vw of America cheating on the vehicle emissions system.

11 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 12/20/2015

Engine failure on road. Service is claiming it is a fuel pump issue. . . . High pressure fuel pump.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 10/09/2015

My Golf tdi suffered a catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) causing my vehicle to stall in the middle of traffic. Luckily every warning light on my dash lit up about 30 seconds prior to complete failure allowing me to begin to merge from the left hand lane and coast with my hazards on to the right lane. From initial symptom to complete vehicle failure was less than 1 minute. Searching online this is a common failure, one that results in upwards of an $8000 repair.

13 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/05/2015

On 5 Aug 2015, at approximately 9:00 pm, my 2013 vw Golf tdi suddenly died while driving down a major thoroughfare in lexington, ky. I narrowly escaped being hit by a tractor trailer in the rear end when the car died. I had previously put $20 worth of diesel fuel in the car earlier that morning so the car had been driven approximately 40 miles after fueling before the car suddenly died. After the car died, it would not restart so I had the car towed to the local vw dealer in lexington, ky. I went back to the dealer the next morning (6 Aug) and dropped off the key and explained to the assistant service manager (merritt) what had happened. I called the service dept back around 3:30 later that day to check on the status and was informed that the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) had failed. They told me that they were still diagnosing the car to determine the extent of damage and what parts were going to need replaced. Since the hpfp is a known issue in the vw diesel models, he recommended that I call corporate vw of America and open a new case which I did and provided the case number back to the dealership. Yesterday (7 Aug), I got word from the dealership that the entire fuel supply system had metal shavings in it and that all major parts were going to need replaced, fuel pump, injectors, fuel lines, etc and that the estimated bill has going to be between 5-7 thousand dollars. Vw of America also contacted me yesterday and let me know that they had been in contact with the lexington dealership and told me that they would let me know by Monday, 10 Aug if they would cover the parts and labor past the warranty expiration date since the hpfp failure is a known issue on the Volkswagen tdi models. I will update this as I receive new information. I am retired military and a current federal government employee.

14 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

While exiting the off ramp of the highway at 1100 at night the car died and I was lucky enough to make it to the side of the road as traffic behind me was locking up their brakes and swerving to avoid a collision. After an expensive tow and finally getting the vehicle to the dealer I was told the high pressure fuel pump had exploded in the tank sending metal into the whole fuel system. I am told the repair bill will cost around $6500 to fix. This car has 54000 miles and I had received a letter from vw stating my high pressure fuel pump had an extended warranty a month prior however vw will not pay for the repair costs. The vw dealer told me they did a fuel sample test and the fuel did not have enough lubrication in it which caused the fuel pump to fail. As I have researched vw has had more than 3500 reported cases of these fuel pump failures and refuses to stand behind the bosch products they use. I also talked with the service station where I purchased the fuel to let them know the pump failure is being blamed on lack of lubrication in their fuel and they have not had one other complaint of fuel issues reported. On a side not I filled my Dodge diesel truck with the same pump and fuel and have had no problems. To me this is a serious problem that vw is not taking responsibility for and if there is not a recall on these fuel pumps it is only a matter of time before someone gets killed because a known bad part that is not getting replaced.

15 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/18/2015

I was traveling southbound on the freeway, in the fast lane, at 70 mph when there was a blinking yellow warning light on the dash. The light resembles an electrical coil and is referred to as a glow plug light. The car immediately stalled. I put on the hazard lights but was unable to get to the right due to traffic and a dead engine. As a result we had to stop in the center divider. It took 45 min for the tow truck to arrive. This while traffic flew by. The fault was identified as a high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failure by the dealership.

16 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/11/2015

High pressure fuel pump went out on my 2011 Golf tdi. My family and were driving down the road when it completely shut down almost causing an accident. Vw covers up to 120,000 miles, my vehicle has 122k miles. This car is my daily driver and almost lost my job due to this problem. Hpfp is a faulty pump and vw denies to cover this expense. I do not have $8000 to cover this expense, and I will keep on contacting vw to fix it. Other cars with higher mileage have been covered, but not mine. I am on of thousands with this tdi hpfp problem. I always use chevron diesel, so there is no way it can be "contaminated" it is vw faulty piece. I hope someone reads this and helps me out, thanks.

17 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 03/03/2015

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Golf. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

18 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 01/07/2015

Vehicle check engine light came on while driving. Driver immediately pulled over, turned engine off. Driver restarted engine, checked under hood. Engine started, but there was a strong vibration and high pitch metal on metal sound. Vehicle towed to dealer. Dealer diagnosed a failure of high pressure fuel pump. Fuel pump and all component parts needed replacement. Note: diesel fuel only used on this vehicle.

19 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 10/14/2014

Check engine light came on. Took vehicle to an independent repair shop and after it was checked out mechanic stated the fuel pump and fuel system were contaminated with metal shavings. Mechanic advised that the engine could stall and not restart at any time if repairs were not made. Took the vehicle to the local Volkswagen dealership and received the same diagnosis. Dealership service manager stated that the repairs were not covered under warranty but nonetheless that Volkswagen would repair the fuel system at no cost. Vw dealership suggested that the vehicle had been misfueled, leading to the fuel pump failure. That was not the case. The vehicle has never been fueled with anything but diesel fuel.

20 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 10/04/2014

While driving about 2 miles after starting my car the diesel glow plug warning light started flashing and it felt like I lost power. I got to a safe place about 500 feet after, pulled over, turned off the car and started it again it seemed ok for a minute but then it started flashing again then the check engine light came on, I turned it off and it wouldn't start, it made a loud whine & clicking noise. It was towed to the dealer, they informed me that the bearings failed in the high pressure fuel pump.

21 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/05/2014

On the night of August 5 about 8:30pm, while driving at 45mph, my car lost power while driving. I was able to get out of the traffic flow and coast until I could get to a side road and then pushed it into a parking lot. I looked at the engine and saw the serpentine belt was damaged. I also noticed fuel sitting on top of surfaces in the engine compartment. I asked my son to verify if he smelled fuel which he did as I have little sense of smell. After seeing the damaged serpentine belt, I did not attempt to restart the engine. I had the vehicle towed. At the dealer, the service representative attempted to try to start the vehicle and move it and said it wouldn'¿¿t start, possibly causing additional damage since the serpentine belt was shredded. After some investigation the dealer'¿¿s service manager explained that their leading theory is that diesel fuel leaked from fuel filter gasket onto the serpentine belt. Then the shredded serpentine belt took out the timing belt and caused the engine to rotate out of time causing internal damage. Car had been maintained per manufacturer schedule by this dealer, and this failure occurred 6k miles after most recent service. Dealer was unsure why the diesel fuel leaked, but the high pressure fuel pump and fuel filter seemed viable problem points. After getting engine parts replaced at great expense and getting the engine running on Aug 30, 2014, dealer indicated that they couldn'¿¿t detect a fuel leak and said serpentine belt condition showed no condition to indicate failure but failed anyway causing the cavalcade of engine damage. Many parts were replaced or removed and reinstalled during the repair, so it is questionable that there was no fuel leak.

22 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

I was stopped at a red light preparing to make a left hand turn when I noticed that the engine started making a rattling noise. After the light turned green, I proceeded to make my turn and after exiting the intersection the vehicle started to hesitate and eventually stalled. I pulled to the side of the road safely and tried to restart the vehicle but it would not start. I called aaa and my local vw dealer and had the car towed there for repair. I was told that the high pressure diesel fuel pump failed and that it would be replaced as a "goodwill" by vw since my car was just out of the 5 year 60k warranty. To my knowledge, the entire fuel system was replaced with the exception of the fuel tank itself which was cleaned. Everything was taken care of by vw with no charge to me, and a loaner car was provided.

23 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

2011 Volkswagen Golf tdi, started shaking while driving. I just made it to the right lane when the engine stopped completely, leaving me stranded on the side of the road. Car was towed to the dealership where they diagnosed a faulty fuel pump, leaving residues of metal in the engine. Car is little over 40,000miles, 5,000 miles out of warranty. Vw however agreed to fix the issue for free. It would have been a $10,000 repair. According to the service people, they have seen several issues like this, related to diesel Golf. Luckily I was driving on a city street, but the engine shutting on a highway would have been extremely dangerous. It seems to be a pretty common issue, such that vw will fix it for free instead of charging customers. I am now worried this will happen again in another 40,000 miles. I am purchasing extended warranty, but vw should recall and replace all faulty pumps.

24 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

I was entering the freeway and accelerating when I realized that my car wouldn't go faster than 40mph. I pulled the car over at the next exit and the car would no longer accelerate. It would not let me go past the slowest speed that I had reached while exiting. I turned the car off and it would no longer start. I had the car towed to the nearest vw dealership where it took nearly a week to get the car fixed. There were metal shavings in the fuel lines; the fuel pump and all lines needed to be replaced. I had my car for less than a year at the time of the incident and the vehicle had less than 15000 miles on it. I was told by the dealership service department that "sometimes these things happen" and that I was fortunate it was covered under the warranty (+$5k worth of damage). They said there was nothing I could have done to prevent it, or prevent it from happening in the future. My car is a Volkswagen gold tdi (diesel).

25 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/07/2014

Stalled while traveling full speed on the freeway in the desert, glow plug light and check engine light came on, was almost hit by several trucks while attempting to coast to the nearest off ramp 1/4 mi away, at the end of the off ramp vehicle stalled, again almost hit by several more vehicles. We were able to push the car off middle of the offramp to the side of the road. Dealer states high pressure fuel pump failure, known issue with my make/model/year of vehicle. Stalling on freeway is a very dangerous issue. Many owners have had multiple failures of this part as it wasn't designed properly for us diesel specs (was designed for europe. ) vw needs to address this issue. This was not an issue of misfueling, I have only used diesel from brand name stations, your current investigation blaming this on misfueling is incorrect, it is clearly a part defect. The latest redesigned part for the 2013 model year has had failures as well (third redesign of part. ).

26 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/03/2014

Driving in stop and go traffic on highway when glow plug icon on dash started to blink, lost significant engine power. Pulled over and restarted with nothing on dash. Quickly, glow plug icon started blinking again, along with a solid motor icon on dash. Drove to dealership with 40mph max power, and after turning car off, technician could not turn car back on. High pressure fuel pump failed and sent metal shards into fuel system, destroying the entire fuel system. Tech says he's seen 6 tdi with same issue recently. Vw is covering 100% of cost.

27 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 03/29/2014

Last week, the engine light came on again in my Golf tdi the way it had a year ago when the fuel pump failed. I took it in again and was told the possibility it was a fuel pump issue again after they replaced the entire thing brand new last summer was close to zero. However, I received a call that afternoon saying once again the fuel pump was having problems due to "dirty diesel. " last summer after the car was repaired I was told only to go to shell and chevron. I have only gone to the same chevron station this entire time and the problem occurred again. I was told by the dealer mechanic that dirty diesel is a rampant problem in the pacific NW and that it was not a good idea that I only went to one gas station and that I should try others. I was also told, I "barely" drove the thing as it only had 5000 miles added on it since last summer. He said diesel can grow bacteria and that he would put additives in my current tank and then my next tank I should add another bottle of additives. How this solves the problem long term I have no idea. So apparently I was sold a vehicle with a fuel pump that a) can not handle the diesel quality in the entire pacific NW region I live in and b) must drive at a certain pace/rate to keep the fuel pump clean. I am going to try and sell the vehicle as soon as I can find a replacement as this seems like an inherent flaw in the car that will never go away since they continue to replace it with the same faulty fuel pump.

28 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 01/29/2014

While driving at highway speed glow plug light began blinking and car lost power and went into "limp" mode. Had car towed to dealer where it was determined that the in-tank fuel pump and diesel high pressure fuel pump had both done bad, possibly a cascading failure. Repair was performed at no charge despite being outside of warranty. Eight months later and 18,000 miles later at approx 79,000 miles, similar symptoms and failure as determined by the same dealer. This was again repaired by vw under "goodwill warranty" . There must be some sort systemic or design failure with the fuel pumps on these cars. There are pages of complaints here and on various tdi web forums documenting instances of fuel pump failures.

29 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/30/2013

Vehicle stalled on street at stop sign. Was unable to restart the car after multiple attempts. Vehicle was repaired; high pressure fuel pump failed. Metal shards contaminated fuel rail, fuel tank, and other systems.

30 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/16/2013

Glow plug and check engine indicator appeared while driving approximately 45 mph in vicinity of the m-10 freeway in detroit, mi. Vehicle power unexpectedly cut out, forcing me to maneuver off of the road at a speed lower than surrounding traffic. I picked up the vehicle on 19 Aug from the dealer and experienced an identical problem in vicinity of 9 mile road and middlebelt in farmington hills, mi. Vw later informed me that the problem was associated with a failure of the high pressure fuel pump.

31 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/19/2013

My vehicle is a tdi diesel version of the vw 2011 Golf. During my commute home I was traveling at highway speed in the left lane of southbound highway 101 in CA when a warning light illuminated (glow plug) and I lost significant speed and power. I made my way to the right shoulder and was able to travel in "limp mode" for another mile or so before the car died. I called the nearest vw dealer and had my car towed to that dealer. Initial feedback from the dealer is that it is a high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failure. Root cause and and repair have not been completed as of today, Monday July 22, 2013.

32 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 05/16/2013

Engine warning light, loss of power, engine stall. Dealer said fuel pump failed, contaminated complete fuel system. Entire fuel system must be replaced ## VIN failed ##.

33 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 11/23/2012

As I was entering the on ramp to get on the highway, under normal acceleration, there was a hissing sound and the car stalled in the middle of the highway lane where multiple cars were getting on and off the highway. I was forced to pull to the side of the exit ramp where I waited 45 min for a tow truck to get us while cars flew past my fiancee and I, putting our lives in danger. I had the car towed to the dealer where I purchased the car. Today, 11/26/2012, I was told that the hpfp(high pressure fuel pump) had failed and would be replaced under the warranty. I am waiting for further information as to whether there are any more malfunctions or not. This seems to be a common problem that vwoa has failed to acknowledge and is putting peoples lives in danger.

34 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 11/17/2012

I have a 2010 vw Golf tdi. I was driving along at 25 mph when my glow plug & check engine lights started flashing, and my tachometer dropped to zero, indicating a stall. The power steering also started to cut out, but I was able to safely pull over. Tried starting the car again and got nothing. The car was towed to a vw dealership down the street, and on Monday 11/19 they informed me that my high-pressure fuel pump failed and sent metal fragments through the entire fuel system. The car is currently being repaired under warranty, but I was told that the bill would be at least $5,000 for this kind of fix. Oh yeah, this also completely ruined my travel plans for thanksgiving, as vw refused to give me a loaner car while this documented warranty issue was being dealt with. After doing some research, I found that there are several cases of 2009-10 tdi fuel pump failures with the same symptoms. Apparently, there have been three revisions of this pump since then, and I am due to get the newest one. But, there is also talk that ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel in the us is not providing the proper lubricity, and thus causing the pumps to fail (this is not an issue in europe). Nonetheless, further investigation by the NHTSA should result in vw doing a proper recall and redesign, rather than quietly fixing an inherent flaw on a case-by-case basis. Even with my car fixed, I'll still be wondering when this will happen again. Which also makes me wonder if I should just sell it and be done with vw. Very frustrating.

35 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 11/10/2012

The car is a 2012 vw Golf tdi, purchased around April of 2012. It had approximately 7500 miles at the time of the incident. I was on a short drive to the store and back (5 miles round trip from home). On the way back, I heard a metal grinding sound coming from the engine compartment and noticed a lack of power. I turned off the radio to confirm that the sound was coming from my new car and it was. At the next stop light, the car died and could not be restarted. I confirmed that I still had diesel fuel, and sure enough, I still had 1/4 tank. So I was not out of fuel. The engine would crank, but not start. Thankfully this happened at a stop light instead of on the hilly interstate I take to work 20 miles each day. Aside from hearing the metal grinding sound for approximately 30 seconds, I had no warning. The car had to be towed back to the dealer. The dealer took a few days to diagnose the problem as a faulty fuel pump. Apparently, the fuel pump malfunctioned and shot metal shards through my entire fuel system. It took the dealer well over a week to replace every component and the cost of labor and parts was over $10,000. Thankfully, vw covered the repair as being under warranty. A quick google search confirmed that hundreds of other vw diesel engines have had the same problem. Unfortunately, the dealer did not replace the fuel tank. Based on reports I have seen online, I can expect another failure any day. Please investigate this further and force vw to issue a recall. I have owned 5 Volkswagens in the past (own 2 right now) and love them, but I will never buy another one after this incident.
