1 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/09/2017

The contact's son owned a 2007 Volkswagen Gti. While the contact's son was driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle left the road and crashed into a tree. The air bags failed to deploy. The driver was fatally injured. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was towed to a storage lot where an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and found no failure. A police report was filed. Medical attention was not required. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

2 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

I've already spoken with vw of America, and the dealership my husband and I purchased this vehicle from. But yesterday 03/17/2016 at approx 420am my husband was driving the Gti to work. It was pouring down rain and made it very difficult to see. A txdot light pole fell on the highway and my husband had no time to stop until he was just about to hit it. After hitting the light pole he went air born, landed on all 4 tires and fish tailed. After he tried to regain control of the vehicle, it flipped to the passenger side and rolled to the roof, when the vehicle came to a stop it was on the driver side. He was going about 30-40 mph if that. What blows my mind is the minute the vehicle flipped and landed on the passenger side which crushed the doors and frame near windshield. The air bags never deployed. Not side, not front. Nothing. He walked away after crawling out the sunroof. But his hands are cut up and he is extremely sore on the right side. But the air bags never deployed. And mind you the radiator and intercooler fell out after he hit the pole and landed!!!!!!.

3 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/22/2013

Passive occupant detection system module not functioning after warranty work done by Volkswagen. This is extremely problematic, as the passenger airbag will no longer engage, regardless of how much weight is in the passenger seat. In the event of a car accident, the airbag would not deploy for the passenger, and the passenger's life would be in jeopardy. Volkswagen will not stand by their product, and they refuse to offer any aid or help to fix the situation. They want $1800 for the part, just to ensure the safety of the individuals in the car.

4 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

While pulling into a gas station after leaving a stop light, the steering wheel mounted buttons and lights (horn, steering wheel, etc) flickered off when turning. At that point, the buttons failed to work unless the wheel was turned almost to full lock clockwise. It took about a day of driving until the airbag light finally came on telling me there was a fault. Further investigation led to a faulty airbag clockspring. Numerous instances of people reporting similar failures on vw forums with similar model years. A research in part numbers show it's the same part number and version through various vw models including 2006-2013 jetta, golf, Gti, passat, tiguan, etc. Many stories of people with those cars having similar issues. This part should be redesigned and replaced in the affected vehicles since the driver's side airbag can fail to deploy in a crash even if the airbag fault light isn't always on.

5 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/10/2012

The contact owns a 2008 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated while driving 40 mph the driver rear ended another vehicle and the passenger side air bag did not deploy. A police report was filed. The passenger sustained bruises after hitting her head on the dashboard. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 67,000.

6 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

I lost control on a very sharp turn by a steep drop-off in the north carolina mountains. When first leaving the road at approximately 35-40 mph, the front left corner of the car hit a tree a few feet off the pavement. After rolling off a steep embankment, approximately 50 feet, the front grill and bumper made full contact with the ground and small trees, stopping the car from its plunge. The front airbags did not deploy, yet the impact was enough to crunch the hood (pictures available). My wife was treated and released from the local hospital with a gash on her head. Most surprising was when the rear driver-side part of the vehicle laterally slammed into a tree, no side/curtain airbags deployed. The impact was just behind the back edge of the driver door and smashed in the frame from the roof to the top center of the wheel well, deepest at the top of the car frame. There was also a smaller impact in the same area on the other side of the car. My head slammed into the top inside part of the door/roof where an airbag should have deployed, and I am still feeling the bruising and stiffness today. The airbags in the car were a key selling point; they failed. I understand there must be a certain force to cause deployment, but this force should have been met from the side impact and from one of the two impacts at the front of the vehicle. It certainly failed my wife and me at a critical time. A claims adjuster is still evaluating my vehicle (estimated to be totaled). What is the purpose of front and side airbags if the sensor would not deploy them in an accident given this speed and the side/front collisions with enough force likely to total the car? vw of America, after consulting with an engineer, said all four wheels must be on the ground for the airbags to deploy. Because the passenger tires weren't on ground, that's why they said airbags were programmed not to deploy.

7 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/26/2009

I got into a head on collision and my airbags did not deploy.

8 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2003 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/25/2009

The airbag light keeps coming on. Vw votex web page (for vw enthuiasts) lists that it is a known problem with a seat belt sensor that triggers and airbag warning light. I have had it reset three times at 60. 00 a session. . . For a known problem. I have been driving some time with the light on. I have some concern that the airbag would not deploy in an accident. I have written vw about it and was given a lame excuse and then ignored.

9 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/29/2009

Car was involved in frontal crash, hitting another that was stopped in the road. Car was going between 20 and 30 mph. Airbags did not deploy causing driver to hit nose on steering wheel. Not broken but severely bruised.

10 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2003 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/09/2004

The consumer was traveling 40 mph, but when he attempted to apply the brakes, the pedal went to the floor. The consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle and rear ended another vehicle. The driver's side air bag did not deploy, but the passenger side did deploy. The driver sustained head injuries. The consumer refused to go to the hospital. The vehicle was towed and totaled t by the insurance company. Please fill in additional information.

11 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2001 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/24/2003

I was rear ended in Nov 2003. My car was pushed into the vehicle in front of me with enough force to signal the airbags to deploy. The airbag did not deploy. I did not find this out until after the accident when the airbag light came on and it was at the dealer for repair. The dealer told me that the signal had gotten scrambled and lost. The problem was fixed. In Apr 2005, during my 60k service I was told that my airbag resistance was set too high and the airbag may not deploy. The dealer said this repair would cost $1000 in parts plus the labor which is intensive. I do not feel that I should have to pay to repair faulty safety equipment, especially when this is not the first problem with the airbag.
