36 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/17/2019

Bought a brand new 2019 vw golf Gti rabbit edition manual 6-speed on January 14, 2019 and had it die out almost like a "putter" until the engine shut off while I was driving it today April 17, 2019. Happened when I was coming to a stop with the clutch in and in first gear. When I restarted the car using the push ignition I then had it die on me twice more. Luckily this happened when I was nearly home. . . I was able to finally get the car started and rev the engine just enough to get back on my way but then had it die on me again when pulling into my driveway at home. The car still has less than 800 miles on it and has been properly driven since taken off the car dealer's lot.

37 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/12/2019

When coming to a stop the vehicle stalls out. Manual transmission, clutch fully depressed and the car stalls. Car also stalls on restart of the engine. Dealer has not found a cause.

38 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/22/2018

Upon turning my car on today I received 9 separate bulb out warnings. After a little while went and tried the car again and all the warnings went away. Upon further investigation I come to find that one of my fuses is not blown but melted and so is the fuse block under the hood. Have seen that other Volkswagen Gti have had a recall for the fuse block in the past for 2009 Gti but not for mine even though I am currently suffering from the exact same issue as that one.

40 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/10/2018

Car was driven in a neighborhood. First noticed some smoke coming out of the hood, stopped the car, more and more smoke came out and couldn't even see anything if anyone were to be in the car. Notice some fire start to appear at the bottom of the car, called 911. The entire hood was on fire by the time firefighters arrived. It seemed there was going to be an explosion if firefighters were to arrive a minute later.

41 Electrical System problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/04/2018

Ongoing engine misfire issues. After 3 visits to dealership and replacement of coils, fuses, relays, etc, root cause determined to be a short between the after run coolant pump which causes a voltage draw and confuses the ecm. After talking with vw technician, I learned that this same exact part on Audi vehicles is under a safety recall for the shorting issue that my pump is having because the short can cause fires. However, the vw part is not under recall. My family could have been put in grave danger because this part is in my car and has not been recalled. In addition, even though the part has failed, vw will not compensate me for the repair, so I have no choice but to pay $500 out of pocket to fix a safety hazard in my vehicle. For reference, Audi recall number is 18v229000.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/06/2018

While driving at night I had several lights quit working simultaneously. A bulb warning light illuminated on the dash and messages for right front low beam, right front turn signal, left rear turn signal, left rear brake, right front high beam, right front fog light, left front side, right rear side, and license plate bulbs all appeared in the information screen. I checked outside the car and all of the lights that I got messages about were inoperative. As there was no chance that all of these bulbs failed simultaneously, I did some research to determine what might have caused this. Numerous internet searches for these symptoms seemed to indicate that a fuse in the under hood fuse panel could be to blame for this. I checked the f16 fuse and found it burned on one side of the fuse. The fuse panel was also slightly melted where this half of the fuse was inserted. Pictures are attached. My local vw dealer said the fuse panel will need to be replaced. Upon doing some research, there is a safety recall on the 09-11 tiguan (code: 97z9) and a service action on the 09-10 jetta and 09 Gti (code: 97am) for the exact same issue I am experiencing. Both the dealer and vw USA say that I am 100% responsible for the cost because my model and VIN aren't covered under any campaigns.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/09/2018

Clockspring failure on 2016 vw Gti resulting in non functioning airbag.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/13/2018

My gear indicator lights (prnds) flash and my car either will not engage into gear or will limp. It has done it several times while driving on the highway. It will slam into a low gear causing rpm to max to 8000 and acts as if I slammed on the breaks. Also the number 3 fuse on top started smoking and melted inside the fuse box. Feared my car was king to catch fire.

45 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/21/2018

I researched my VIN when I purchased the vehicle and found an incomplete safety recall on the abs module. That recall number is 16v913. Before I could take the vehicle to the scheduled appointment the abs module failed. The Volkswagen dealer in tacoma, washington charged me a diagnostic fee because the module failed communication, in which they found the module did indeed fail, but they would not replace it because they claim it wasn't covered under the warranty or the recall. They submitted a secondary claim to vw of America to try to have them approve the claim which was also denied. I am reaching out to hopefully get help with getting my vehicle fixed and once again safe to drive. Attached will be a copy of the invoice from the dealer and their findings.

46 Electrical System problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/19/2018

The fuse box melted. This was caused by a terminal or a fuse over heating. This caused an outage for all the right-side lamps of the vehicle and some lamps on the left-side. The lamp error was reported by the vehicles multifunction display. The car was running fine in the morning and experienced this failure after starting up the vehicle at noon. I restarted the vehicle over and over trying to clear the error. The bulbs in question appeared to be fine. I drove the vehicle straight over to the vw dealership for service. Later, the dealership confirmed the fuse box had melted after I researched and discovered similar occurrences with other vw models. The cost of repair was $377.

47 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/17/2018

While driving the vehicle on street roads and highways the car will shift down into a unknown gear and all lights start flashing putting the car into a neutral that doesn't fix until it's restarted.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/08/2018

As I was driving down the highway in normal driving conditions the abs light, electronic stability control light, steering wheel fault warning light and the check engine light lit up without any warning prompting a fault description on my center dash saying "fault: abs/electronic stabilization control". From my research this fault was also found in the 2009 (mk5) Gti which shares the same engine, electrical components and drivetrain as the 2010-2014 (mk6). On the different Volkswagen forums within the community it is still an apparent fault with the car with hundreds of inquiries about how to repair and fix this problem on our own.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/22/2017

The 12 volt outlets in my car aren't working. When I went to check the fuse, I discovered that the diagram of the fuse box provided by volkswagon in my manual does not match the actual fuse box in my car. I can't tell which fuse to replace to correct the problem. On-line, many other people have commented that their fuse box diagrams in their manuals are wrong too. Please help us get accurate diagrams of our fuse boxes.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/02/2017

Timing chain failure 60000 miles; 6 months later engine coils failed.

51 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/19/2017

The vehicle was in motion when the warning lights for abs, brake and the esc systems illuminated making a beep noise, the gas indicator said the car had less gas than really had. While in the road the car lost power. I think it is related with the abs and stability control recall: NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000. Took it to the dealer, they say they do not have the recall number yet.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

Vehicle has failed abs module, as diagnosed by mechanic. Abs light is on and brake light flashes, as to be expected. While in motion, on either city street or freeway, vehicle randomly downshifts to first gear and is unable to switch back. Only way to get car working again is to turn car off and on, a dangerous proposition when you're on the freeway. In addition, power steering goes out and engine fault workshop! comes on after a few minutes in motion. Speedometer also randomly stops working while tachometer goes out of control. What begins as a simple brake problem is now an undriveable car. Have had to push car to side of the road several times because of this. Completely unsafe conditions to drive in.

53 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/17/2016

2009 75,000 miles. Abs controll module failure for the past couple of weeks my car would intermittently throw up the abs and traction lights but this would go away shortly afterwards. I get in my car about 30 minutes and start driving for maybe 1/16th of a mile and everything just freaks out. Speedometer is dropping to zero (while in motion doing about 15 mph) and fluctuates all over between 0 and 20 mph. Brake light is on. Traction light is on. Abs light is on. Steering light is on. Epc light is on. Check engine light is on. And the mfd is saying "engine fault workshop". As time has gone on it now tends to happen atleast 15+ times a day.

54 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/14/2016

Power steering turns stick randomly at any speed, requiring me to turn off the engine and restart only to get the steering back to normal. Very scary as more effort has to be input I to the steering for it to work. Engine stalls and cuts out randomly especially on idle. Has caused several issues when driving.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

Abs module failure at 88k miles. Multiple fault codes presents with constant beeping and an error message reading " engine fault! workshop! in the heads up display (epc, emergency brake, electronic steering assist off, traction control off fault codes). This is a safety feature failure that can result in loss of power steering, antilock braking system functionality, and traction control at the same time. The failure of this module represents a serious danger to occupants in the vehicle as the safety features are disabled due to the failure of this crucial part. This can happen at any speed while driving/turning.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/28/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Volkswagen Gti. While driving at any speed, the gear shifted into neutral and communication was lost with the gear box. Also, the rpms increased. There was no warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was placed in park, shut off, and restarted. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to valley auto world Volkswagen (910-867-7000, located at 3810 sycamore dairy rd, fayetteville, nc 28303) where it was diagnosed that the computer system needed to be replaced. The computer system was not replaced. The contact called the manufacturer, but was unable to reach anyone. The failure was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.

57 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/20/2016

When driving the car, a lot of the warning lights flash out of nowhere. The abs light, traction, power steering, epc lights all flash. I also lose power steering. On top of that, the speedometer does not work. This happens abruptly and sometimes at high speeds. It is extremely dangerous. From what I've read, it is the abs module failing. This seems to be a common problem of 09 Gtis and needs to be recalled!.

58 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/04/2016

Just last week my Gti started having electrical problems and soon realized most 2009 Gtis eventually have this problem with their abs control modules. Solid abs, solid power steering light, solid check engine light, solid traction control, and flashing "brake" lights would illuminate on the dashboard occasionally upon turning on the vehicle, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. Then, the abs, traction control, brake, epc, steering, and check engine lights began to come on while driving. Abs and traction control stay illuminated, while the epc, steering, check engine, and brake lights come on intermittently, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. The message "engine fault - workshop!" also shows up on the message display center in the dash. Steering feels a bit stiff. The dealer has indicated an internal fault in the abs control module.

59 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/28/2016

My abs pump & module were determined to need replacement. Searching online, it seems a large number of people with the 2009 model are having this issue. I was quoted at $2200 to fix it. I was driving on a city street to a restaurant after my wedding and the abs, traction control and brake lights all came on. Days later the car started to rev weird and the speedometer would not work.

60 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/07/2016

For several weeks, solid abs, solid traction control, and flashing "brake" lights would illuminate on the dashboard occasionally upon turning on the vehicle, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. In addition, while the car is in motion, the speedometer will repeatedly alternate between the actual speed reading and a reading of 0 mph. When the speedometer drops to 0 mph, the engine rpms increase. Finally, the car sputters and bucks when attempting to accelerate rapidly, and steering feels a bit stiff. The dealer has indicated an internal fault in the abs control module.

61 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/12/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. When the brake pedal was depressed at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to respond and the instrument panel warning indicators flickered on and off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown steering mechanism failed and the steering module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). The failure mileage was 95,120.

62 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

Failed abs module which makes speedometer, abs, traction control not work intermittently.

63 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/26/2015

When braking hard today (it was raining and I got cut off by a distracted driver) my car went into a (barely) controlled skid. Abs, esp. Steering wheel lights all flashing with three beeps. The lights went away when I turned the car off/on. My wife is 7 months pregnant, and was with me in the car. I'm not impressed with what I'm reading online regarding the sheer volume of others experiencing complete abs failure. Someone is going to get killed if vw doesn't recall the malfunctioning control module. I've booked my car in for service next week. I truly hope vw steps up and finally accepts responsibility for this life-saving repair. Ps I'm in british columbia, canada (victoria).

64 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/03/2015

This is a low mileage (31,000) vehicle. Unexpected, complete failure of radio, cd, navigation system, bluetooth hands-free communication. . . Everything went dead. Vw dealer check fuses and radio fuse and said that they were ok. Radio and all functions associated with radio dead and not working. Will not turn on. Why is this a safety issue? because of the hands-free, bluetooth phone capabilities no longer work. Very dangerous. Plus navigation doesn't work.

65 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/12/2015

Abs and traction control warning lights on the dash had intermittently appeared on several occasion over the past three months while driving at various speeds and conditions. The warning lights would stay on until I turned the car off. Once restarted the lights would be off. On 12-Aug-15 the same warning lights came on when I started the car. They remained on after turning the car off and restarting. Three warning beeps were then heard at several minute intervals until I reach my destination. Other warning lights came on briefly then went out. I was informed by a mechanic that the abs control module had failed. Based on an internet search I understand this is a common issue with the 2009 vw Gti.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Abs warning light started coming on. Then a warning light that the right, rear turn signal had failed. One week later the entire dashboard is covered in warning lights, including a "faulty engine workshop" warning light. It appears that abs control module has failed, leaving me with no abs braking on a well maintained, 50k mile car. This seems to be rampant problem with the tsi mkv Gti at this mileage. Vw of America offered me no assistance. Vw should recall this part before they see any accidents lead to serious injuries.

67 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/22/2015

The abs module failure has been reported many times online. The module will fail causing abs, traction control, power steering, and engine lights to all come on. Much of the dashboard is lit now. The car reads "engine fault workshop" and the speedometer will drop to 0 mph. The fuel gauge will change from empty to 3/4 to 1/2 while driving. Audible beeps are heard from dash.

68 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/18/2014

While driving north on I-895 at 55 mph, nearly all of my warning lights appeared on the dashboard, along with "engine fault workshop" on the mass display. The vw dealership indicated that it was the abs control module. Upon research online, this appears to be a common issue with 2009 vw Gti's. Some have reported that the their brakes have completely locked up on them. I called volkswagon of America, and they deny any issues with this.

69 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/05/2014

While driving at highway speeds, multiple dashboard lights indicating loss of traction control, anti-lock brakes, and power steering were illuminated. This then caused issues because those systems are not working while the spedometer (would stay at 0mph when driving) and the fuel gauge (moved around randomly from 1/4 to 3/4 full). Looking into this issue I found that several owners of the same make, model, and year have had the exact problem as me.

70 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

Airbag fault indicator is erroneously present. Now the airbags are not active even with passengers onboard. Dealership us asking me to pay the 55 dollars to get the light reset for the airbags to work.
