Failure Date: 01/03/2022

My car been fine and went to take my daughter to school and shut the car off and get back in to go home and wouldn't start and the abs light came on and check engine light as well. I am concerned because I think since I have done the abs no longer then 2 years. I feel like there is a problem and dont think vw fix it the first time when I took it in. . My fiance had a terrible accident 12 month ago and no income and I dont know how we are going to fix it if we have too thats what I am worried about as well. . Thank you, dawn.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2021

I was driving in clio alabama on state highway 10, when all of a sudden the epc light came on my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta s 2. 5 5cyl. . . . . About 2 miles later down the road; the engine cuts off unexpectedly while I am going 62mph down the highway, with an 18 wheeler directly behind me at the same speed. The car just quits, won't do anything, so I swerved over the side the road so I wouldn't get hit by the 18wheeler and tried to restart the car and it wouldn't do anything. I've had to tow it back to my home and I've had multiple mechanics look at it and try to discover the problem but every time they hook up a diagnostic scanner , and it throws a code, I've purchased the parts that shouldve fixed said dtc code, and rescan the car and that fault code will be gone but there'll be a new one each and every time. . It is costing too much to continue to fix it . It will turn over but it will not crank up. I don't know what else to do about it but something is just not right about this issue so I am reporting it as a safety issue because the total loss of power near about caused me to get hit by an 18wheeler at very high speeds and could've been killed. And it's also some type of an electrical issue and I am reporting it to hopefully obtain an answer to the issue, help repairing it or replacing it, or Volkswagen to repurchase the car from me and most importantly I'm reporting this so hopefully it will be able to save someone's life one day . Thanks a lot and have a great day .

My daughter is driving a 2009 vw Jetta that is not fit for the road, the dealership says it isn't there problem, berlin city Honda, and that they don't work on them, and the extended warranty doesn't cover it, as the light turns green she steps on the gas,and no power and the steering wheel locks, she is in heavy traffic and in a panic, she pulls the key, puts it back in and the car starts again, now it keeps happening and berlin city says they can't help her? is this a recall?.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2016

Wife went outside to start her tdi and after sitting and making no progress in warming and smelling a lot of un-burnt diesel she decided to shut it off. After she came inside and told me it was not warming up and it seemed to be running out of fuel very quickly I went outside to check it out. I could see that diesel had leaked onto the ground, so I opened the hood and fuel was dripping from the engine mounted fuel pump. I left it overnight at this point to make sure no fires where started. The next morning I took it apart to find out what the source of the leak and after removing the pump, associated electrical, and rubber lines I saw the end of the pump had popped out of its crimped aluminium case. This was allowing diesel to leak past the running electric pump and onto the running engine which at the point of turning it off had covered the entire serpentine side of the engine completely in fuel. It was a bosch part #1k0 906 098a we have contacted vw about this and they offered no assistance in either offering to investigate the leak or expediting the buyback process to remove this vehicle from the roads and my driveway knowing that it leaked fuel. Vw did acknowledge a prior recall on a rubber fuel supply line had been performed before the car was purchased.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2016

The vehicle was stationary at idle for approximately 15 minutes. Fire started under the hood at unknown location. Initial smell of "something hot" was followed by smoke through vents. Noticed smoke between hood and windshield. Paint on hood bubbled in approximate location above oil cap / diesel particulate filter. Shut engine off and exited the vehicle.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2016

Car's abs and brake system has been failing once a while causing car to lose control of stability. Random "engine workshop failure" many times while starting up the car and car performance gets very limited.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2016

The abs module needs to be restore or replace. The lights on the dashboard that comes on includes engine, brakes, steering, abs, and e. T. C. (electronic throttle control). What actually happens when it comes on is it hard to steer, acceleration goes slow, beeping hearing test noise frequents , gas gauge goes to e, and speedometer stops working. This happens frequently and doesn't matter what road or highway I'm what makes it more dangerous when its hard to steel and the brake lights are constantly flashing.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2016

Engine fire in motion on the highway cause unknown.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2015

Stopped and left the line at a green light when our 2009 Jetta tdi sputtered and stopped in the middle of a busy intersection. Was able to get the vehicle towed to a local vw dealership and given an invoice for $5500 for the high pressure pump, which is identified a known issue by vw under a self-imposed extended warranty but never under a recall. As I was told by vw customer service, since there was never a catastrophic issue to our vehicle prior to 120k miles, instead at 124k miles, the safety items were not identified and corrected.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2015

I was driving our 2009 Volkswagen Jetta sportswagen tdi on the highway when the glow light came on. I stopped the car and the engine stopped working and started smoking. The dealer said that the engine had seized but did not know the reason. According to the dealer the engine will have to be replaced. The vehicle has had all of the recommended services which were done by the dealer including all of the oil changes.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

After numerous attempts by dealer to fix engine light indicator (3 attempts in 5 days) said maf part bad as per computer codes.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2014

For the past year or so my 2009 Jetta tdi (diesel) has had the same reoccurring problem: my glow plug light will come on and I lose normal driving capabilities. I cannot accelerate or maintain speed as I normally do. My car will remain around 25 mph, sometimes losing power until I am forced to pull over. My solution has been to turn the car off, and back on again. The light will go off and I can drive normally most of the time. Sometimes I have to leave the car off for a period of time to regain standard driving capabilities. It has been about 2 weeks since that has happened. 2 days ago, my engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they pulled codes p0087 and p0088 (fuel pressure too high and fuel pressure too low at the same time). They want me to replace the fuel rail, which will be an estimated $1000 in total parts/labor. I called another dealer in hopes of getting a better price and they are put off by the first dealer's recommendations. I was told there is no evidence of metal in my fuel system but even so, other dealer thinks this will be more serious than just replacing the rail. After researching I am beginning to think that I am experiencing the beginning of hpfp failure. I feel like I am driving a ticking time bomb and I'm not sure what to do! replacing the fuel rail feels like a quick, expensive and inefficient solution to a bigger problem. I contacted Volkswagen customer care and I was told that I will receive a call from a regional agent about my situation tomorrow.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2014

Driving on a busy 4 lane road my car suddenly stopped just flashed a few lights on the panel for few seconds. The car would not start. Could not be moved lucky that there were no injuries. The vehicle towed to vw dealer, basil vw at lockport and was told that the high pressure fuel pump exploded. Caused extensive damage requiring numerous components, with a total cost of about $7,000. 00 the car was service by a vw dealer or by a repair shop owned by aaa of wny located at clarence NY. This came on with out a warning, was not informed about this problem. Had owned diesel cars since 1977 and did not face any such problem or hear of such a problem.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

Driving on my way home from work in town and all of a sudden the glow plug light comes on flashing and the engine light appears on the dash. I immediately turned off the car restarted the car and the problem was not resolved and a message appeared on the sash "engine fault workshop!". Hpfp failure.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2014

While driving on freeway car completely shut-off. Coasted to off-ramp, stopped car and then re-started it. Dealer later diagnosed ignition switch problem (intermittent ignition switch faults logged) and recommended replacement of the ignition switch.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while traveling 60 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 30 mph. The glow plug on the dash illuminated. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the impeller shaft on the turbo needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 42,000 and the current mileage 42,000.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2014

The car began to flash the "glow plug" warning light along with a message "engine fault workshop" pulled to the side of the road and attempted to restart. Engine would crank but not turn over. Got the following failure codes: p0087, p13e3, p2196. Looks like this is a common issue and yet vw does nothing about it. Class action anyone?.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

After idling for approx 5 minutes on a hot afternoon (95f), I tried to accelerate the vehicle and immediately felt a sputtering from the engine. The engine light came on and then the epc light; the vehicle started to lose power. After turning off the engine for a few minutes and restarting, the vehicle was still sputtering however we were able to drive it home approx 10 miles on a city street. The vehicle would not accelerate over 20 mph. After taking to the dealership they advised that an engine coil had failed and needed to be replaced. The incident occurred again 5 months later with the same conclusion from the mechanic.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2014

The dealership stated it was a warped dual mass flywheel. They replaced it and it is still knocking. A second dealership said that it is still knocking because the dual mass flywheel is bad. It causes the clutch to shift hard and acceleration to be an issue. I do not feel comfortable traveling on the highways.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2014

While driving on a 3 lane road my vehicle lost power and showed a warning message of "engine fault". It had about 50% power for approximately 30 seconds and died. The vehicle was towed to vw dealer and they report that it was the high pressure fuel pump failure with complete fuel system contamination.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2014

2009 vw Jetta tdi unable to start the vehicle it would crank but will not start. The vehicle was towed to the vw dealer and they said that the fuel pump in the fuel tank failed. The pump in the tank was replaced and still will not start. The dealer then said that the hpfp high pressure fuel pump on the engine was bad. They changed the pump and still will not start. The dealer does not know what is wrong with the vehicle at this time. They called their tech line awaiting an answer. I believe this is a high pressure fuel pump failure issue that is a known issue and well talked about on the vw tdi forums. If this is the issue the pumps and any repairs should be warrantied for the life of the vehicle as long as you own the vehicle since it was purchased new from the dealer.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2013

Car suddenly died and will not re-start. Engine turns over, but that's it. I suddenly lost power and had to coast to the shoulder which was very difficult because the car decelerated very quickly and there was no power steering. Luckily this happened very early in the morning and traffic went around me.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

When coming to stop at a red light, there was an engine fault workshop warning message and a blinking yellow glow plug warning light. When the light turned green, the car felt sluggish, needing extra throttle than usual to get to 35mph. After stopping at the next red light, the car was stuck in first gear (only 30 seconds after the warning light), and I could only get to 10mph in a 35mph zone. Turning on my hazard blinkers, I was lucky that there was a dedicated left turn lane into a parking lot, otherwise I would not have been able to safely pull over to the right shoulder from the left lane before the engine died.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

I was stuck on a busy intersection because my car wouldn't lock onto the gear. All gears on the control panel where flashing. Upon later research, I was told that the dsg gave a false-neutral.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2013

We were driving our 2009 Volkswagen Jetta tdi down the highway at 65mph on Friday may 24, 2013 when suddenly the car began to shake and shudder violently. It was very scary and then it seemed that the power was coming in and out. Because of the sudden shaking and loss of power, I had to very quickly pull to the side of the road, to avoid causing an accident on a heavily congested highway on a holiday weekend. The vehicle is always serviced by the dealership (including all oil changes) and is up to date on all pertinent maintenance. The dealership has diagnosed the vehicle with a failed high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) and has accused us of somehow allowing metal into the diesel fuel (they even had some metal "samples" to show me at their service counter, how bizarre). I went back to the fuel station where we last filled up and spoke to the manager, who said there have been no reports of any issues related to contaminants of any kind in their diesel fuel. We are stuck with a $6,000 bill for a dealer-maintained car that has ~83,000 miles on it and is just over 3 years old, in addition to the fright of a violent loss of the vehicle's power, at highway speeds.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2013

Driving up a mountain highway, the car lost all power (even with the gas pedal to the floor). Once pulled over, the vehicle wouldn't start again. The high pressure fuel pump in the tdi failed catastrophically and sent metal shrapnel throughout the entire fuel system.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2013

The same thing has occurred approximately 10-15 times now. While driving, it is as if the car goes into neutral, and applying gas does nothing. It is extremely dangerous because there is no warning that it is about to happen, and if it were to occur while pulling out in traffic, we would be stuck in place with no way to accelerate and get out of the way of traffic. The car was taken to the dealership and they could find nothing wrong and our money for the diagnostic was spent and solved nothing. It has been inconsistent, sometimes not happening for weeks at a time, but in the last 5 days it has happened approximately 5 times. It is an extremely dangerous problem and should be taken care of ASAP!.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

Vehicle engine stopped completely dead and was nearly rearended . Was not able to restart vehicle and was towed back to Volkswagen dealership. Volkswagen told me the high pressure fuel pump was bad and repair would cost $10,000. 00 after a furious argument was told they would fix it. This problem has happened to many vehicles that have not reported it to nhtsb when are you going to put a stop to this major problem. Maybe when someone gets killed.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2012

2009 Jetta Volkswagen tdi, with only 50500 miles on it. The car died in the middle of intersection at 35mph. This was during rush hour traffic. In the car was me 32, my wife 36, my daughter of 8 years old and son of 2 years old. It was a very scary event. I had it towed to the nearest vw dealership. It took them 3 days to look at this car and after I called 15 times, they told me that this fuel pump had been slowly breaking down inside the fuel tank, running through the lines and into the injectors. They have told my this could be extremely expensive. I have always used clean diesel, and filled up at new gas stations. This was just today I spoke with them, and I have done some researching and found this to be called hpfp issue. From as many cases I have seen posted on the internet, this should definitely be a recall.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2012

Started my car for the second time that day, nothing out of the ordinary. About a mile away I experienced the car shutting down. I downshifted into second, turned back on but when I gave it gas it sputtered. I was on the side of the road for 1. 5hrs waiting for tow truck. Mechanics computer describes the problem as low fuel pressure.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2012

While leaving a concert, the vehicle was fine leaving the parking lot. Once we increased speeds to 45 mph, the engine completely shut down. The dials on the dashboard all fell to zero and the gas pedel no longer worked. We coasted into a small campground area off to the side of the road. After trying to restart the car three times, it finally started and we proceeded to go down the road, only to make it 500 more yards and pulled in to a hay stack pad. After numerous attempts to start while sitting on the phone wiht our insurance company, the car started once and died after sitting idle for three minutes. We then attempted to start it one last time and drove 25 mph to the nearest gas station. We all got out of the car, locked it up thinking it may have something to do with an antitheft feature. We got back in the car and were able to drive 41 miles home at hiway speeds. The following day we drove 5 miles into town and it died again going 25 mph. The closest volkswagon is another 25 miles away.
