1 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/14/2023

The contact owns a 2013 vw Jetta hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph the vehicle began to vibrate and hesitate. The contact stated the transmission and hybrid warnings and several other warnings were illuminated. The contact pulled over and turned the vehicle off. The contact turned the vehicle on and was able to place the vehicle into drive (d) and began to move forward, however he observed that the check transmission light was blinking. The contact stopped the vehicle placed it into park (p), then to check his transmission he shifted into reverse (r). The vehicle did not respond even though the prndl indicated he had shifted into reverse (r). The contact turned the vehicle off and had it towed to a local dealer. The local dealer diagnosed and determined that the mechatronic unit and transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact had researched online and related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 19v866000 (power train). The failure mileage was approximately 126,000.

2 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

I have a 2011 Jetta se 2. 5l auto pzev and when I turned on the car outside from my house, the check engine light turned on with no reason. I passed the scanner and threw the code p0106. The car would drive well, but when I release the brake and press gas, the car wouldn't react right away, it would accelerate slowly and kick-in I second gear. Then the gears indicator (prnd123) disappears. I changed the map sensor and works good for 3 or 4 day. After this the problem returns. I saw a technical bulletin from Volkswagen company and this bulletin says that the car needs an update programming. I called to my concessionary and they says that I must to pay, first for the diagnosis, and second for this update. I have been investigating about this trouble and too many owners of Volkswagen vehicles presents this fault, including USA and mexico. I guess that Volkswagen must correct this problem with no charge. Attached the technical bulletin 2034012 from Volkswagen.

3 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/14/2019

Car while driving immediately slows like it was shifted into neutral. When you press the gas car races but does not move. The prnds flashes and the car had to be shut down and restarted. I heard there was a recall but it never showed for my car nor will they help, because my VIN was not listed. This is a serious safety hazard. Especially at 55 mph in heavy traffic.

4 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/08/2017

While my 17 year old daughter was driving down a city road, going about 30mph, the car stopped accelerating. She then noticed prnds was flashing on the dash. Luckily, she was not far from home, she was able to continue driving it home. We parked the car until we were able to have it towed to the nearest dealership, which is 88miles away. The car is undriveable at this point. . The dealership informed me that the mechatronic unit has failed and needs replaced, quoting me $2800. 00. I've tried contacting Volkswagen about this issue and all they tell me is her VIN number is not included in the recall even though her car is having the exact same issues as the other recalled 2008 vw Jettas.

5 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/06/2016

My Volkswagen Jetta tdi 2006 got the prnds flash of death, and I found out it was the mechatronic unit when I took it to the shop. I was driving on the highway going 75mph when the flashes started to occur. I couldn't give my engine any power and I started to decelerate at a quick pace, and the vehicle behind me almost hit me. This is a major saftey issue for me and for all other occupants on the highway, because my faulty car could have caused a major accident, that could have resulted in many injuries. I want to bring this attention to the NHTSA to, provide me with more information as to why the vehicle is faulty, and the amount of trouble I would be in if I didn't manage this situation like I did to protect myself and everyone else.

6 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/05/2015

Car is equipped with a dsg transmission. When shifting between park, reverse, neutral & drive vehicle's transmission fails. There is a loud clunking sound followed up by the prnds on the dashboard illuminating and and car being forced into a neutral state. Car has been looked at by several mechanics. Volkswagen dealership replaced the mechatronic unit. And independent mechanic replaced the dual mass flywheel as well. There is still no fix or change. Problem started around 120,000 miles.

7 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

My vehicle has approximately 165k miles. Right at about 120k miles, the transmission started shifting harshly. At times, the transmission would get stuck at 3rd gear, and the transmission indicator panel lights up prnd all at once. This usually happens when driving hills, or stop and go driving. My airbag light is also on constantly. I've had the issue fixed previously, however, the issue has returned. Lastly, my passenger side door does not like all the time. I've tried to remotely and manually lock the door; however, it is not working properly.

8 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

At highway speed, car suddenly went into neutral with a flashing prnds on the instrument cluster and "press brake pedal" indicator. Once pulled over on the road, car would lock in park and was unable to move the vehicle. Car has been diagnosed as having a faulty mechatronic unit. Previous recalls have been isssued for 2009-2010 mechatronics for the same issue, but not this 2006. Nhtsa action number is pe09035 and recall number is 09v333000 for the 2009-2010 cars. Volkswagen needs to realize the scope is far broader than just 2009-2010 cars. This vehicle also suffers from the driver's door wiring harness failure like many others (unable to lock doors, operate windows, etc).

9 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

I have a 2010 Jetta tdi with the dsg transmission. When I was driving yesterday, I noticed the "d" flashing as I lost power to the wheels. It was acting as if it was in neutral. I tried to shift it to "n" and back to "d" with no success. I pulled off the road, turned the switch off, waited for it to completely power down and restarted it. It went a couple of minutes down the road and the "d" started flashing again, the transmission disengaged again (false neutral). This cycle went on several times before I was able to get it home. When it was flashing, it would flash in any gear selected (prnds) and it was continuous until I turned the key off. There were times that I didn't have a safe place to pull off the road. This is a big safety issue, it can cause people to be put in a very dangerous situation. This issue can happen at any time and cause a fatal wreck. During the failure, there was no power to the wheels at all, it failed to go into a limp mode to safely move the vehicle.

10 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Check engine light comes on frequently and when I take to dealer it is always a sensor problem I have also had some electrical issues replacing bulbs frequently. Also while driving the shifting lights will all light up prnds, sometimes there is a loss of power. Also one of the overhead light seems to have melted due to a high heat source of some kind.

11 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/08/2013

Vehicle's dashboard gears "prnd" are all highlighted. This occurs randomly and is a daily occurrence. Does not affect driveability thus far.

12 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/11/2013

The car would buck and buck then go into gear , then it would buck get stuck in 3rd or 4th gear I would have to turn the car off let it sit then turn it back on . The prnds panel would all light up and stay on and sometimes go off if the car sat for like 2-3 days but the light would stay on and the car would do the same thing . The transmission went out the mechanic stated the 3rd or 4th gear was stripped and that it will cost me anywhere from 4k to7k to get it fixed.

13 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

While traveling on interstate 4 at 65 mph the automatic transmission went from drive to second gear by itself even though the gear selector was in drive, nearly putting me through the windshield had I not had my seat belt on. I managed to get onto the burm of the highway and stop. At this point transmission fluid was dumping all over the road and the car would no longer move and the digital gear selection light was flashing on and off continuous(prnd). Had it towed to my vw mechanic and they found that the electronic valve assembly had quit working and that the mech tronic clutch assembly was destroyed by it going from drive to 2nd . After researching on the internet, I found that vw has known about this problem and has sent out letters to customers that have 2007-2010 vehicles with this same transmission that they would replace their defective transmissions under an extended warranty or re-imburse them for repairs if done prior to this letter up to 100000 miles. I contacted vw USA and asked about my car and was told because my car was a 2006 it wasn't covered even though I got them to admit that it was the same transmission that was used for 2005. 5 through 2010.

14 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/30/2012

I was sitting in traffic in minneapolis mn. The light turned green, traffic moved and when I pressed on the accelerator, the engine sped up as if it was in neutral. The shift selector was in d for drive. The prndl indicator on the dash flashed red with all five letters illuminated. I tried turning off the ignition and turning it back on with the same results. No movement with engine accelerating. After being pushed into a parking lot by passersby, I tried again and the transmission worked as it was supposed to. After researching the problem on the internet, I find that it is a common vw problem and the NHTSA action number is pe09035 opened July 17, 2009 covering 2008 and 2009 models. My tdi is a 2006 model purchased in may 2007 because vw kept selling 2006 tdis in 2007. There were no 2007 vw Jetta tdis.

15 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/19/2012

While driving on a major highway, my vw's dsg transmission started slipping and shifting erratically. The engine rpms would increase to 6000 then drop suddenly to 500. While this was happening, the engine would suddenly reengage, causing the car to surge and buck. The transmission would then slip again, and the engine surging and vehicle bucking cycle would continue. Symptoms of the dsg transmission failure occurring; transmission would slip. Rpms would increase then decrease suddenly and without warning. Engine would engage then disengage causing the vehicle to violently buck, shake, and jerk. The prnds nomenclature would flash rapidly, indicating a fault within the system. The final indication of the severity of the dsg transmission's complete failure was the cars inability to move under throttle. The cars velocity was completely uncontrollable. I am very meticulous about the maintenance of my vehicles. Vw requires a fluid and filter change at 40,000 for the dsg. I had mine done at 39,000 this happened on i70 on the border of PA/MD. I was able to move the car to the shoulder without loss of life or property. However, had this dsg/transmission failure occurred on 495 in va/MD, ( which was my location just 2 hours prior) the results could have been catastrophic. Vw is well aware of this issue with its dsg transmission, both domestically and internationally. Note the VIN specific recall in the us for dsg/mechatronic/ temp sensor. However, this issue is widespread. My VIN is not specified in the recall, yet my vehicle has experienced the same issue and failure as that specified in the recall. The failure of my dsg transmission was completely unexpected and without warning. Had I not had the opportunity to pull my car safely to the side of the road, the results could have been severe injury or worse yet, loss of life for me or other drivers.

16 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/02/2012

The car looses power/ acceleration while im driving, the prnds light and others start going on and flashing on dash. Its in the dealership as of March 12, 2012 and they are charging me for changing the metatronic unit in the transmission. Vw had a recall done on the 2008-2010 vw's with the dsg transmissions but not the earlier ones like mine 2006. I am experiencing the same thing as the others have and am wondering why is my car/ year is not included in the recall. I have the same bad transmission in my car that they produced in the later years. I need to get my car fixed, this is a big safety issue to me and my family.

17 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/13/2011

2005 . 5 model year Volkswagen Jetta tdi (turbodiesel) with automatic (dsg) transmission. On several occasions while driving car, the transmission will for no reason shift into neutral, and all transmission indicator lights 'prnds' will flash simultaneously. So far, if engine is shut off and then restarted, the transmission will again function normally. I believe this has happened 4 or 5 times now. On one occasion, the car was in an intersection when it became immovable which presents a safety hazard. I can see that there is a massive amount of info on many vw internet sites about this issue, in fact if you simply google 'vw dsg flashing prnds' or 'vw dsg transmission problems' anyone can find it. It is a common problem. I see that hhtsa has begun an investigation based on this for 2007 thru 2009 model years, obviously a problem on 2005/2006 vw with dsg transmission as well. Vw has initiated a new customer service program to address customer concerns related to certain dsg equipped models but apparently mine (and many others) are not covered they say by this program- nevertheless a safety issue exists with 2005 and 2006 dsg equipped vw's. I called vw customer service (national) today 11/3/11 and rep said "I am not aware of this issue' for this year- so they are either lying or incredibly underinformed. I had the car to vw dealer for diagnosis, and they stated that a diagnostic test showed a malfunction in a part that controls transmission operation and was causing the transmission to shift into neutral by itself. Their recommendation, "spend $2000 to replace the part, or just get a new transmission = $4000. Since there is obviously a safety related design flaw that allows the transmission to shift itself into neutral- I feel the NHTSA should expand the investigation to include all years of vw dsg transmission equipped vehicles sold in the USA.

18 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/31/2010

Driving home on country road in the pouring down rain when at about 50 mph the engine rpm revved, dash warning lights lit, flashed and rang. The prnd was flashing. Luckily a driveway was nearby to get out of traffic. Knew at this point what had happened because we had the very same thing happen in October of 2009. Megatronics unit had failed and was replaced at a cost of $1900. Called dealership for appointment on June 8th. Happened again 5 times on way to dealership. Told from diagnostic test that it had a bad steering angle sensor and gateway module. No parts were available. Had to take car 70+ miles back home. The car malfunctioned on the way home in a construction zone. Felt it was unsafe to drive any further. Stopped at a different dealership. Left car for them to diagnose. Found a second bad megatronics unit. Replaced under warranty from the first replacement. I feel that this car needs to be recalled for the safety concern that the vehicle loses power at any given time, in any road situation you can think of. You cannot always be prepared to react to this. You have no power to get out of harms way. The only way to correct this is to shut the car off and restart and hope it works. Previous odi #10286197.

19 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/20/2010

While driving a 2006 vw Jetta diesel, all power was lost to the drive wheels with the prnds display on the dashboard flashing. Car has 46,000 miles on it. This has been referred to as a false neutral. I was able to coast to the road side, turn off the car and restart it with normal function of 300 yards then problem repeated requiring a tow to the dealer. A failure of the mechatronix unit in the dsg was discovered and part replaced. A similar issue had occurred at around 10, 000 miles , was looked at by the dealer with no issue found.

20 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

Fourth incident: three unsuccessful attempts by dealership to correct problem. Problem has occurred under different circumstances and driving conditions. Speeds ranging from 65 mph to 20 miles per hour. . . Generally while attempting to accelerate. Auto is a 2009 vw Jetta equipped with the dsg transmission. Car will go into neutral without prior warning. When this occurs, prndsl indicator light will flash as will "apply brake" warning light. On at least one occasion, simple application of brake cured the problem. In the latest case (today, March 20, 2010) I had to turn off the motor twice before the transmission would return to normal functioning. As stated, this has occurred four times since I have owned this car. The car has less than 8,000 miles on the odometer.

21 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

My 2006 vw Jetta tdi stopped moving while driving to work on Jan 4th, 2010. There were no signs of issues prior to the break down. The engine was running fine, the prnds light on the dash were flashing and the car's transmission would not respond. After having the car towed to our local vw dealer we found that the transmission went in to fail safe mode due to a dsg system failure. Per our service rep the mechatronic unit failed due to over heating. Our vehicle is in-operable and the repair part needed will take 2 weeks or more to receive as there is a recall on the same part for the same failure for 2007-2009 vw's and Audi's. Our vehicle is out of warranty, vw denied that this issue is apart of the recall as our VIN does not fit the recall list. They agreed to allow the repair under warranty pricing and pay half for the repair; this will cost me $1254 to repair their known issue.

22 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/30/2009

2006. 5 Volkswagen Jetta tdi experiencing slow gear changes from park to reverse or park to first gear taking over 30 seconds to select gear electronically. Shifting from lower gear to higher gear results in engine revving high before shift is actually made resulting in jerking vehicle motion or a stalled motor condition. Slow speed maneuvering such as slow turns and partial stops results in the vehicle losing forward power for several seconds before the engine revs high again and shifts into gear. At 30 mph vehicle has dropped out of gear resulting in vehicle needing to be guided to the shoulder and powered off and back on before forward motion can be resumed. Vehicle also will display flashing prnds display on dashboard on resuming forward motion resulting in the transmission to disengage and requires the vehicle to be stopped, shut off, and then powered back on. Vehicle is exhibiting no mechanical noise, smell, or error codes in the computer. Dealer has confirmed there is a malfunctioning mechatronic unit and vwoa has confirmed they will not cover under their recall campaign despite these symptoms leading to the campaign in question. Volkswagen customer service has denied a further inquiry into the manufacturing dates of the mechatronics units and their technical revisions, only going off vehicle model years and build dates despite other 2006 owners reporting identical circumstances with their vehicles. Technicians advised against further driving of the vehicle as there was significant risk of failure that may leave the vehicle immobile in traffic. Technicians were also able to readily reconstruct the issue on their own proving this is not caused by driving style. Repair cost of over $4000 to replace faulty part will need to be covered by the owner in order to resume normal operation on this vehicle.

23 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

While driving, vehicle appeared to go into neutral with no transfer of power from the engine to the drivetrain. The prnds indicator began flashing though still indicating it was in drive. The vehicle rolled to a stop and was unable to move to get off the highway. Problem corrected itself briefly after turning the vehicle off then on again, but happened again shortly after resuming driving. Vehicle had to be towed to the nearest dealership. Dealer states it is a faulty transmission speed sensor and is awaiting a backordered part to repair it.

24 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/31/2009

1. Driving at highway speeds in 6th gear, flat road, in cruise control. No erratic driving or fast acceleration. 2. The automatic transmission fails by falsely shifting into neutral when the transmission shifter is in drive. The prnds gear indicator on the dash began flashing when this happened. This has occurred 5 times since I bought the car on July 15, 2009. The car lost all power to the front (drive) wheels and had to be stopped on the side of the highway, then restarted for the car to return to normal operation. 3. The car has been submitted to the vw dealer's service dept. No parts have been replaced or repaired.

25 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

Commuting from work, on the highway driving at approximately 65 mph, I momentarily release the gas pedal on my 2009 vw Jetta tdi automatic (dsg). When I step on the gas once again to maintain speed, there is no power. Engine behaves as if it is in neutral, with rpms going up with no acceleration. Prnds indicator lights on dashboard blink. It takes a couple of tries of releasing then stepping on the gas pedal again for the gear to take. In the meantime, car has slowed down quite a bit in a busy highway during rush hour making for a safety hazard for me and other motorists. This has happened approximately 7-8 times since I purchased the car (1 month, 2200 miles).

26 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/24/2009

1st complaint odi #10278262 filed on 7/24/09 for 2006 Jetta tdi: "prior to the event listed below, we noticed that the car was not performing as it normally would. We were stopped at a traffic signal in a construction zone, light turned green proceeded to accelerate, car moved 10 feet, rpm went high and it was as if the car was in neutral. Had enough momentum to reach the side of the road. Prnd was lit up and flashing and the power steering system symbol had erratic flashing. Tried park, neutral, reverse nothing happened. Put the car in park and shut off engine. Restarted engine and it allowed us to drive off. Went approximately 10 miles driving at about 55 mph, thought we seen an animal and let off the accelerator. Upon trying to accelerate, incident described above happened again, this time a check engine light appeared. Before calling the dealer we did a search and came across this site. Our vehicle had a dsg transmission service (for a cost of $286. 75) at 43,703 miles and the car now has 71,491 miles. This vehicle also has a problem at times, that was reported to the dealer on June 5, 2007 and nothing was done about it, on cold start up, putting it in gear and having a very severe jerking, almost to the point that it might stall the engine. " update 10-3- for fear of having another occurrence, the car was towed (70+ miles) to dealer in late August, diagnosis was it needed a new mechatronics unit. Delivery time for part was over a month. Talked to mechanic at vw, he recommended to not drive the car for safety reasons. Late September was notified part was in, towed car a second time (70+ miles) to dealer where mechatron unit was replaced, at a cost to me of $1,826. 10. Some repair cost was picked up by vw. So far 100+ miles since repair - seems to be fine. This has not been a very pleasant experience. It is a serious safety issue and we just hope this resolved the issue.

27 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/22/2009

Was driving my 2009 Jetta tdi wagon down the highway at approximately 90km/h. All power was lost, the car was in "neutral. " rpms dropped to about 1000. The gear shift indicator was flashing "prnd. " I had to push the car off the highway, I waited 10 minutes, re-started the car and drove it to the closest vw dealer. They said it was a faulty temperature sensor, and that none were available in north America. I was told to continue driving the vehicle and just to pull over every time the car behaved like this.

28 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

Dsg transmission goes into neutral sporadically at speed, and loss of wheel power occurs for 5-10 seconds, then transmission reengages. Prnds gear indicator on dash flashes during the episode. Happens repeatedly but no engine check light triggered, and dealers cannot diagnose problem because no fault codes are generated. On two occasions the vehicle would not reengage and had to come to a complete stop and the engine had to be powered off on and back on to clear problem. This is a safety issue.

29 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/14/2009

Transmission down shifted approx 2 gears and was stuck in 2nd gear. The transmission selector would not respond to attempts to shift out of gear or to the automatic mode. The prnds lights on the central dash started flashing. I was able to drive to destination stuck in 2nd gear, which seems to be a default limp home mode.

30 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/09/2009

I had a complete loss of power and blinking prnd while traveling 65 mph, and scared me. First time it happened, I though I hit the shifter with my knee; second time got me concerned; third time I said I'm going to the dealer; 4th and 5th times it happened on the way to the dealer! while in the shop for 2 days, I sent a detailed account of what I experienced to the head mechanic, knowing he would not likely be able to recreate what I experienced on his own. He never got a fault code for this. After calling vw, he checked and found a faulty transmission temperature sensor, which showed failure 54 times! apparently, the tranny goes into protection mode (death mode on the highway if you ask me) with this fault condition. Waiting now for a tranny temp sensor for about a week now.

31 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/04/2009

I was driving on the highway going about 65 mph using the cruise control and my car was in "drive". All of a sudden, the car hesitated, and started to slow down for no reason. I saw on the multi-function display the "prnd" was flashing. I went to push the gas pedal, and the engine just revved freely and no power was applied to propel the car. I had to coast to a stop and restart the car in order to get it to move again.

32 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/12/2009

I'm going on my 3rd dsg/mechatronics unit. I have a 08 wolfsburg with 31,000 miles. The very first day I had the car in broke down with 101 miles on it. Flashing prnds and it would not shift into any other gears or reverse. Had it towed to dealer and waited 3 weeks for new mechatronics unit. For a few days it was fine then it started with jerking, hard down shifts from 3 to 1 in drive. Backing up was scary at times. Brought it back to the same dealer 4 different times and they said this was normal for dsg. Got tired of hearing the same story from them and took it to another dealership and they said it was mechatronics unit and its on order since June 12,2009 and today is July 25, 2009 and still waiting for my car to be fixed.

33 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/31/2009

Dsg transmission goes into neutral sporadically at speed, and loss of wheel power occurs for 5-10 seconds, then transmission reengages. Prnds gear indicator on dash flashes during the episode. Happens repeatedly but no engine check light triggered, and dealers cannot diagnose problem because no fault codes are generated.

34 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

This is a Jetta sportwagen tdi with dsg automatic transmission. With dsg transmission in 'd" mode, coasting at moderate speed in traffic, transmission slipped out of gear into false neutral, transmission display flashing "prnds". Stepping on accelerator caused engine to rev to redline, car did not speed up. This happened on two separate occasions, each time I tried repeatedly placing transmission into "tiptronic" mode and back into "d", problem resolved within 30 seconds and transmission then functioned normally. Cel did not illuminate. As this happened in light traffic, the failure only delayed vehicles behind me temporarily. I have not taken it to vw dealer yet as they have no information about the problem. Tdi club forum posts suggest problem is faulty transmission temp sensor, may be more common in vehicles sold in spring 2009.

35 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/27/2009

While driving, vehicle transmission disengaged resulting in no power to maintain speed. This occurred twice, once on a rural highway traveling approximately 60 mph and once on the interstate traveling approximately 70 mph. With the first occurrence the transmission re-engaged after a few seconds. With the second occurrence, the "prnds" shift indicator light began flashing and I had to merge over through traffic into the emergency lane to avoid high speed traffic, all the while having no power. I then had to shut the engine off and restart it to clear the malfunction. I scheduled an appointment at the dealer for repair and a sensor(s) were replaced on the transmissions computer. Since the repair I've not had another malfunction. This malfunction poses a serious hazard as one loses the ability to maintain speed in traffic, resulting in a stalled vehicle situation.
