36 Seats problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/06/2015

While driving our Jetta at approximately 30 mph the drivers side curtain airbag and side seat airbag spontaneously deployed. There was no impact. There was no pothole. It was the only car on the road. Going straight.

37 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

The right area of the driver's side heated seat began to get excessively warm so I discontinued use for a period of time. Subsequent attempt at use resulted in the heating coil burning through the upholstery. Pictures attached. I have discontinued use and learned there is an expired recall for this as a know issue.

38 Seats problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/21/2015

On September 21, 2015, at approximately 8:00 am in the morning, my seat warmers had burnt out. I was on my way to work; it was a chilly morning so I turned the seat warmer on to 4. The highest it goes up to is 5. Soon after, I felt it was a bit too hot. When I looked down, I saw smoke! I could not stop anywhere so I immediately turned off the seat warmer. I remained calm until I arrived to a stop light. When I looked behind me I noticed 3 holes in my seat. Two little ones and one big one. You can see the burnt wires. I was so angry by the time I got to work. I drove over to vw nemer in latham, NY to have them check it out and make sure there was no engine problem. The service rep. Was not sympathetic and not very polite. He kept saying I should have called and I should have made an appointment. I told him I was going to stay there and wait to find out the results. He came back to tell me that the seat warmer burnt out and that was all. He also tried to get me to fix my brakes (I did not come in for brakes). He told me I would need new wiring and seat covers (leather) to fix it. I had an extended warranty and had to pay a $100 deductible. I am not paying that deductible. However, it does not matter, because for some reason my warranty expired, but my car has not reached 100,000 miles yet. . . I have written a complaint to vw demanding some type of resolution. They need to check their cars very thoroughly. I read that there was another seat warmer incident that happened in canada and vw did not take responsibility for it. I am afraid to turn on any heating system in the car now, because it too might fail and shock me. I have pictures to show my torn seats. I can send them if needed.

39 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/17/2015

Drivers side heated seat burned hole in seat fabric and burned pants and right leg. Local dealership stated "no recall issued for this vehicle".

40 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/06/2015

While on the highway (hutchinson river parkway, westchester county, NY), my power driver's seat started moving forward (towards the wheel) on its own. I stopped it by pushing back on the switch. This incident happened twice more within the next 5 minutes and again overnight (last night) while the car was parked (I came to it this morning and found the seat was pushed all the way forward). Obviously, a driver's seat with a mind of its own could be a serious safety hazard. The seat moving while the car is parked and unoccupied means it might not be able to be stopped even by shutting off the engine. At 6ft2, I would be crushed if I were unable to stop the seat from moving up.

41 Seats problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Seat backs on both front seats make a tin-can-like clunking sound when you push on them them least bit and something inside the seat can be felt shifting as the sound is being made. It doesn't matter if the car is moving or not, it always does it. Our local dealer checked other Jetta's on their lot and they all do it so they won't fix it as they consider it "normal operation".

44 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/27/2015

Driver seat lower right back overheated. Burnt a hole in the seat and melted the coat I was wearing. Smell of burning in the car and intense heat on my back. Turned off the seat heat. When I arrived at my destination, noticed the burn in the seat and later noticed a burn on my coat. . Interior of the car is well maintained, never flooded or abused. Now I have a car driver seat that is badly damaged, a ruined coat and scared to operate the car or to park in my garage in fear of a fire that could burn down my house and car putting myself and family in harms way. I have noticed several vw cars in the past with the same problem in the same spot and was always thankful that it was not my car. Now it is my car with the same problem. Called the vw dealer, and they said that there is not a recall on this. This is a problem that can cause a bad burn on a person. I am glad I had a coat on while driving, otherwise I would have had to seek medical treatment for the burn. Would like to see vw correct the problem and replace the seat at no charge to the owners. This is a preventable problem that needs corrected.

Car continues to leak, tire sensor always on doesn't go away, since the beginning of lease terms, all the above mentioned is consistent, while vehicle is stationary, in motion, on street or on a highway. Further, the same occurs with any turn.

51 Seats problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/13/2014

The car ran into a big puddle of water and the engine stall. When trying to restart the car the car it started with severe hesitation in engine. Tried stepping on gas to keep engine going the exhaust got real loud and the smoke started filling up the cabin. Stepped out of car to find that the car caught on fire. The flames can be seen on under side of the car, in the middle section right under the armrest area between the two seats. Thankfully I was able to escape unharmed. I think thats a manufacturing or design defect that allowed the heat from exhaust to penetrate inside the cabin where it reached the floor carper that caught fire.

52 Seats problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/26/2014

Turned seat warmer on while driving. Thirty minutes later after arriving at destination, felt like my lower back was burned. Had my wife look at my back. I had what appeared to be a second to third degree burn. Throughout the afternoon, the burn began blistering. There is an imprint in the seat which matches where the burnt part of my back was resting against the back of the seat. A burn mark (hole), a little larger than the size of a pin tip, was left in the seat and the fabric appears to be melted around the hole.

While my sister which is currently pregnant, was driving my Jetta the heated seat overheated. The heated seats became so hot that it burned the seat, her jacket and her skin. She received 1st -2nd degree burns on her back.

54 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

Our 2006 Jetta tdi had an airbag fault. We took the vehicle to a Volkswagen dealership and they tested the air code and found out that the passenger occupant detector module went bad due to a electrical malfunction in the circuit. The dealership was not able to say if the airbags were going to work on not in the case of a crash. Volkswagen is refusing to take any ownership of keeping their vehicle safe and covering the cost of the part. I contact Volkswagen USA and they gave the reason they will not cover the part because I did not have an extended warranty. I feel that Volkswagen is being neglectful to their claim on providing a safe vehicle. Now that the airbag sensor is going out, we are having more electrical problems with headlights, parking lights, taillights, brake lights, day time running lights, and turn signals.

55 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

While driving home with my wife, she stated that she thought she had noticed a burning smell. The heated seats were on as it was a cold morning. The next day I noticed that the back rest of the seat had a smoldering mark as well as some sort of smoke damage as if there was a fire on the inside of the seat. We later looked on her jacket and noticed that there was transfer of the "leather" to her jacket.

56 Seats problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

Our car is driven by 2 drivers- I am 5 feet tall, my husband is 6'1". The car seat gets moved back and forth a lot as we both drive the car daily. In late November my husband moved the seat all the way back and it made a cracking noise. We later noticed the air bag light was on. He found the broken wire under the seat and repaired it, but the light was still on. A call to the dealership revealed they knew about the issue and the fix was to "not move the seat so much". The next week- before we had a chance to take the car in to get the light cleared- the car was involved in a collision. I rear ended a car in slow-and-go traffic when she switched lanes in front of me while I was accelerating. $15,000 in damage was done to the car but the air bags did not go off. A witness that stopped to help had to pry the door open to get me out. The fighter fighters all remarked that they could not believe the air bags didn't go off. No airbags could have been a huge issue if the accident was worse.

57 Seats problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

There have been many issues with this model but the one I am having more issues with, are the head lamps and/or fuses. In October of 2014, my left side low beam stopped working, I bought 2 bulbs so it could be replaced and then it wasn't the bulb, it was a fuse. In January 2015, the left side bulb stopped working again, I took it to the dealer because I couldn't find any fuse that was blown on my own, this time it was the bulb. Now it is the right side low beam that isn't working. I am not sure what is going on but I have another car that is 20 years old and I have replaced the bulbs only 1 time. When I first bought this car in June of 2013, I had it less than one month and while going across a rail road crossing, the car shut off completely. After tests, they said that it showed nothing and then it happened again and still nothing was found. The seat belt sign comes on for the right front seat because of a sensor when no one is in it. The trunk has a delay on it and takes a while to open. The gas mileage is not at all what it claims either. I get at the most 32-34 mpg and 99% of my driving is on the interstate. I didn't get any extended coverage on it because everyone says that they are great cars, well unless something is done to fix the issues that they have, they will never get another buy from me or the hundreds of people I know and all the ones that read the reviews.

60 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Both front seats, the bottom right side bolster burned. The heated front seats will over heat, the failure appears to be confined to the right bolster on the bottom section of the seat. The heating elements get hot enough to burn through the seat material. Being the side of the seat I was able to shift my leg away and power off the heated seat. If left on the seats will start to smoke. I consider this a safety issue, I haven't tried , but it seems as though the seat could catch on fire if left on. The local dealer's service rep said just unplug it the option.

61 Seats problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/22/2013

Turned the drivers side heated seat warmer on to 2. Range being 0-5. I smelled smoke and turned it off after only 10-15min of being on. I noticed when I got out of the car, that I had a huge quarter size hole in my seat and my down coat was burned through in 2 large spots. This is unsafe. It could have been a huge fire if I had not turned off the warmer as soon as I smelled something burning.

62 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

The leather on the driver's seat started separating. . . Looks like little micro tears that continue to worsen.

63 Seats problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Sometime in early to mid 2013, I received a notice from Volkswagen that I needed to bring my 2005 Jetta in to have the driver's seat wiring harness repaired due to a recall. I had no prior problems with the air bags or warning lights. I took the vehicle in and they did the work. Within a few days, I got an error message in the display that there was a failure with the air bags. I took the vehicle back to Volkswagen. I was told that the technician failed to clear something in the computer memory so the failure message had come on. They indicated they cleared the message and the air bag light on the display did go off. A few months later, the air bag error message came on again. I tool the car back to Volkswagen. This time they said it was not related to the wiring harness and I would have to pay to have a new driver's seat side airbag installed, at a cost of about $700. In November 2013 I corresponded with Volkswagen and complained about the issue because I had no problems until they replaced the wiring harness. Volkswagen's response was that, even though I had brought the vehicle in for recalls on "a campaign related to airbag connectors and wiring", it was now the airbag itself that was bad not the connectors or wiring, so they would not repair it. The airbag light on the display is still there.

64 Seats problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/19/2012

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the driver's side heated seat overheated and burned through the seat, causing burns to the contact's legs. The contact stated that the failure had been experienced before, but was never so sever that it caused injuries. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The VIN was not available. The failure and the current mileages were 70,000. Kmj.

65 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

I was driving down the highway in iowa and to my horror, my car seat started moving back by itself. I could not reach the pedals in the car and had to hold the electric seat button and fight it to keep it from moving back. This was pretty difficult since the car is a stick shift. Volkswagon was uninterested in helping defray the cost of repairing this very seriously unsafe defect!.

66 Seats problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/05/2012

I was driving down the road with the heated seat on , I had it on 5 which is the max setting and I felt a burning sensation near my right shoulder area so I felt my back and thought wow so I turned it down and after pulling in my garage I looked and the seat was slightly melted about the size of a golf ball and my jacket was slightly melted I am going to contact my local dealer tomorrow to see if there's a recall (beware it could have resulted in fire I believe if I would have kept it on long enough. ).

67 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/03/2012

After noticing for weeks that my heated seats would only work when turned to 5 (passenger seat doesn't work at all), my leg began burning while driving. I smelled something burning and looked down to see that there was a hole in my seat and there was smoke coming out of it. I immediately turned the seat off and haven't turned it on since. When I contacted vw, they told me that my vehicle was not included in the heated seat recall and that I would be responsible for the cost of diagnosing the problem as well as for the repairs.

68 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

I started experiencing a hot spot in the driver's heated seat in the fall of 2012. I have to put a cushion between my right leg and the seat or it will nearly burn. I have also been having an issue with either the O2 sensor or catalytic converter whenever it rains and it's cool weather. The car will lose power, sputter and lurch until it has been running for a while then it acts normally. Finally, for the past two months the rear door locks will not open with the keyless entry or by hitting the lock/unlock button on the the door. I just reached the 100k mark and keep up regular maintenance on my car so I'm a little upset that things like this are happening so early.

69 Seats problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/31/2012

The driver side seat no longer stays in a locked position, and the seat moves freely, sliding from back to front, making control over the vehicle's pedal very difficult and driving hazardous. After inspecting underneath the seat, a large coiled piece of metal was found lying on the carpet. This piece of metal matches exactly another piece of metal that fell out from the bottom of the passenger seat over six years ago. I contacted the dealer, (fresno michael Audi vw) to have them replace the part back into the seat so that the seat no longer moved freely and the service manager refused to carry out any such work on my vehicle. After speaking with two other employees of michael automotive and getting the same refusals each time, I abandoned the attempt to solicit their help in repairing my vehicle.

70 Seats problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/25/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph, the driver side seat began moving backward abnormally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised her that they replaced a sensor to correct the failure. The contact was unaware of the exact sensor that was replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The failure and the current mileage was 91,000. The VIN was not available.
