After starting the car and letting it warm up. I drove out of my driveway to the stop sign. Made a right turn and then a quick left. After turning the car could not go into gear, the rpms kept racing up . But the gear would not engage. Pulled into a store parking lot and drove around in circles at this low speed . Until finally the car jumped into gear and I took off. Car was diagnosed as having a bad mother board to the cars computer. It drove fine for a few days then at a stop light it jumped off again. (car was warm because I had driven a distance). Today I had the transmission flushed and changed. No improvement again. Usually the car will drive straight after it's real warm. But if I make a sharp turn the car jerks and revs up the rpms just as if it was cold. The vw folks kept misdiagnosing and giving me the wrong parts (these must be the same people that made the transmission. They've been a nightmare for assistance very unknowledgeable. I have been buying Volkswagens since1974. I have never had such a crappy piece of a car(also my first time owning a car with a automatic transmission and my last). It drives beautifully (when it's working) but has all plastic crap for parts. (while still under warranty I had most of that replaced). But to find that the transmission is faulty I demand a recall on this 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t. I promise I'lll never buy another vw or will I let any one I know or contact through social media purchase a vw. I can actually say we have been ripped off by vw with their low standards for a car. These cars used to last forever what a way to rip off the public form for money! just like toyoto had a recall Volkswagen you need to recall this unrepairable car no and save your advertisement fees, because bad news travel faster. .

The interior of my 2004 vw Jetta emits a very strong "crayon like" odor. Breathing this odor for a long period of time makes my throat hurt and causes discomfort when I inhale. I worry that repeatedly inhaling whatever chemical causes this will cause permanent respiratory damage.

Attempted to start 2011 Jetta tdi with 11000 miles after it had been sitting in a parking lot for 9 hours. Temperature 45f outside. Vehicle started perfectly and then died seconds later. Attempted to start vehicle again, but would not turn over. Had a lot of trouble getting it to start and when it did it was running very rough and then would die immediately. Finally able to start vehicle and keep it running after approximately 30 minutes. Was able to drive 30+ miles home - started fine after. This is the second occurrance. This first occurred approximately 1 month ago with 8000 miles on vehicle. Outside temperature was in mid forties. Car would not start at all - kept turning over, but would not start. Glow plug light flashed intermitently. After waiting approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour the car started up fine without hesitation. Vehicle was at dealer 2 days prior to second incident, but they could not find anything. Vehicle will be returning to dealer ASAP.

My 2002 vw Jetta glx (automatic) has severe transmission problems. When accelerating, it hesitates and then pops into gear jerking the car. This is very alarming and dangerous, especially when I am on the road with other vehicles around me. I almost had several accidents due to trying to pull out in traffic but the transmission is so unreliable and slips thereby causing me to stall in oncoming traffic. Then, today the car would not go into reverse or neutral at all. I've seen so many transmission complaints about this year's model and it is so unfair for the consumer to be responsible for this expensive repair.
This is a re-occurance of the complaint 10425920 that was submitted by me on 17 September and is listed on this site. It has happened again. Symptomatically it is the same. While trying to gain access to the vehicle the key fob wouldn't open the doors. After gaining entry to the vehicle all locks are inoperative and the fuse is blown. The initial issue was worked on by my local vw dealer but due to the odd nature of the issue vw tech was consulted. The system fuse will only blow if I try to gain entry to the car with the key fobs. If a new fuse is installed and the sensors on the actual door handles are used the fuse will not blow. The dealer had the car for a week and vw was indesisive about what to do. Vw advised the dealership to jump out the fuse and return the vehicle to me (and they did!) until they could figure out the way ahead. I was asked to return the vehicle to the dealer a few weeks later and a complete replacement central locking control unit was installed. I am returning the car to the dealer for another attempt at solving the problem. I am quite sure that vw shouldn't be advising dealerships to jump out fuses and return vehicles to customers for use. Beyond the technical issue vw techlines behavior is alarming and it would be worth asking to see the dialog files for my issue. I will advise regarding the outcome of this next visit.
48 hrs after driving off dealer lot, "diesel ' odor thru fan and idle at stop signs/lights, dealer notified told it would go away after broke in, continued w/o improvement, took to dealer, stated checked everything no problem, bring back may be animal or something blocking exahust (within days). Returned told seal was broke just under intake manifold, pics sent to Volkswagen,, called to check status only to be told "turbo cracked. " 2 weeks later car picked up, stated all recalls performed prior to driving off lot Nov 26,2011, still havent been provided with documentation. Concerned for safety, as well as nausea associated with odor in cabin.

The plastic silver lining under the side windows does not fit properly. This creates a vibration/rattling noise which is annoying and is distracting to the driver. This can cause a safety issue.
We had just arrived to our nephew's pop warner football game. When we got out of the vehicle we told our 8 year old son to stand by the car while we pulled out our other son's stroller our of the truck. Our 8 year old leaned against the driver side rear end when suddenly we heard him screech in pain. We asked what had happened he said that he felt something hot hit his leg. When we looked we noticed that he had burned his right calf and it was because the exhaust pipes stuck out too far. We tried to treat the burn ourself with burn ointment but it was not enough. The next day we took him to the emergency room to have a doctor look at it and she said that he had 3rd degree burns and that it was infected.
We were traveling 70 mph on a highway in our 2002 Volkswagen Jetta wagon (GLS 1. 8t) when, without warning, an loud "poof" sound was heard, the car lost all power, and we smelled burning plastic. The car regained power, then a second "poof" sound was heard, and the power flickered in the car, at which point the car began filling with smoke. We rolled down the windows, pulled over to the shoulder, and evacuated the vehicle. We pulled out what belongings we could, but retreated from the car once flames appeared on the driver's side interior. Approximately 1 minute later, the entire car was engulfed in flames and was a total loss. We are thankful to have escaped with our lives. Here are the specifics of our vehicle: model:jetta trim:GLS body style:4 door wagon engine:1. 8l i4 20v mpfi dohc turbo transmission:automatic.
The vehicle immobilizer activates, preventing the vehicle from being started and leaving driver stranded.
Dsg mechatron unit failure:
vehicle had multiple check engine light displays. The light would come on, then go off for some time and the dealer kept telling me it was probably a gas cap issue. Finally after about 4-8 times of this happening I advised the dealer I was brining it in to get looked at. Dropped the vehicle off on sept 8th and they have no idea when the part will come in. Have said it may be November 7th, but that is not guaranteed. This vehicle had changed gears while my wife was driving and almost made it uncontrollable for her and it is not safe.

The car interior has a crayon smell most noticeable on hot days. I am concerned that I am breathing in possibly toxic fumes from the evaporation of chemicles that were used when the car was built. After typing into google only the 2 words "crayon smell" I get many many hits for vw cars that have the exact same smell as mine, so this is a problem that affects a large group of vw vehicles.
On July 21 at approx 1730hrs while driving less than 15mph the engine shut off and had to pull over with no engine. I pulled over and the engine would not start innuetral but had to start with the engine in park. The vehicle is a 2010 vw Jetta diesel. Vehicle was checked by the vw dealer on 7/23 and no codes could be found and they ndicated nothing was wrong. Called you complaint office 8/8 and odj # 10417948.
The car had been properly locked; the steering wheel was not turned after parking to activate the wheel lock; on re-entering the locked car, using the correct key, the problem was that the key could not be inserted into the steering column ignition key slot. Nothing had been done to damage the slot; our 2nd key was also used, but it also could not be inserted into the ignition key slot. Vw service advised they had only seen the problem once before, and the car had to be towed to the dealer 6 miles away. My reason to consider this a safety matter is that such a problem could have happened at a dangerous time (such as a zero degree day in the middle of nowhere; or a middle of the desert scenario; or when needing to get away fast --- e. G. , bringing someone to a hospital). Thanks you.

Coilpack failure causes the car to decelerate and sputter, especially when it starts to rain. Volkswagen is aware of the problem since 2001. The internet is full of comments on this defect yet the problem continues.
I have a vw 2009 Jetta 2. 0t wolfsburg series, and it has been happening stallings from nothing. A lot of times when I start the car, it stalls by itself from nothing and sometimes would not start again. Yesteday my wife was driving on the highway, and sudderly the car started to loose power unitl she was running at 20 milles per hour, when from nothing again. The car started running normally again. After she got home I took the car for a ride, and, one more time nothing happened. She drives the car for the most of time, but I had stalled with me, but I was able to restart the car right way. Howerver, losing power on the highway is a new event, and I think is "very dangerous". I had been at the vw dealership that I bought the car, wich is reeves imports at tampa, florida. When we took the car there for the scheduled maintenance, they were not able to find out what happened with the car. In fact, the car works perfectly, but it concerns me a lot that we have a car that can stall from nothing. I am aware that nthsa have received a lot of complains about these events, and I am pretty sure that vw knows about the problem, but it does make me worry, when nobody does nothing about that situation. What do they want happen? a event that can cause an accident with fatal victims?. I think the government has to take care that situation for the safety of the people that had purchased that vehicle.
Noxious odor from carpet underlayment. Causes headaches and odor to be absorbed into clothing, skin, seats, etc. Vw will not acknowledge the problem, nor disclose the material used and if it is off-gassing any hazardous fumes.
The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle while driving 30 mph. The vehicle caught fire and the contact was able to get out of the vehicle before it exploded. The police and fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire had not been determined. The VIN was unknown. The contact owned the vehicle for a month and was not sure of the mileage.
I own a 2011 vw Jetta which is equipped with the new intelligent crash response system (icrs) which was put into place to maintain safety during a front end collision by turning car off, unlocking doors, shutting off fuel supply, and disconnecting the battery from the alternator. I have confirmed with the sales manager at my local dealership that the sensors for this to engage are located in the front bumper and the front doors. I was struck in the rear at a speed of 60mph on an interstate and this system engaged. The result of this engagement also powered down my steering and brakes providing me no way to control my vehicle from the rear impact. My vehicle subsequently excelerated to a very high rate of speed at which time I was lunged passed approx 10 cars or 25 yards when my tie rod broken and lunged me back into traffic at which time a front side collision finally brought the vehicle to rest. After researching this system, it appears its intentions are for front end impacts and is not set to engage from a rear impact. Had I been able to steer or brake my vehicle, this loss would not have been so dramatic and serious in nature.
Vehicle has 74,000 & the transmission failed on the highway with no prior issues or warnings. Vw of America has refused to help because it is out of warranty however I know they are having serious issues with the typtronic and many transmissions have failed between 50k-70k miles. I was told this vehicle was already recalled in austrailia.

Vw Jetta 2009 stalls and engines dies while driving. Lost ability to steer vehicle - able to coast to side of road. Car towed to vw dealership and they have been unable to recreate the problem. Concerned if this happens on major road and loss of steering could result in accident.
On a 40 degree day I drove the car about 1 mile. At a traffic lite it stalled. I had to keep the car in park until the light changed, then I put it in drive. When the car was initially started it didn't "seem right" - didn't seem to have power or pick up. I noticed the tachometer wasquickly bouncing between 1800 rpm down to 400rpm prior to stalling. Car had half a tank of diesel, outside weather conditions were dry.
I purchased a 2011 vw Jetta s sedan on 1/24/2011. At approximately 1000 miles, the car began making a whistling noise from under the dash nearly all the time. I brought the car in for service on 2/16/11 and after a few days, I was told the problem was isolated to the thermal expansion valve in the ac system. This was replaced and the problem was fixed. About 2 weeks later, the sound returned. I brought the car in again on 3/29/11 and again was contacted a couple of days later. The dealer service rep told me that the vw factory tech rep looked at the car and there is nothing wrong with it. His determination is that it is operating according to specification. I contacted vw of America and they confirmed this as the outcome and that if I remain unsatisfied I could call the better business bureau auto line for resolution, which I have also done. This isn't a safety issue, but certainly represents a design flaw that vw is not willing to rectify. The car whistles nearly constantly when the ac system is at operating pressure and temperature. Additionally, the clearcoat sustained damage after less than 48 hours of exposure to bird droppings. The dealership stated there is nothing they can do and the warranty specifically excludes that damage from coverage.
I purchased my 2010 Jetta in may of 2010. Less than one year later I have experienced power loss on four separate occasions. Each time this occurred I was coming to a stop after driving between 20-30 miles. It should be noted that there was no "check engine" light illuminated. Two days later I took it to the dealership who attempted to duplicate the problem which as I had imagined they could not.
Hello, I am writing in hopes that you will help regarding a defect in this 2005/2006 Jetta vw model. I have completed much my research on line and it made me anxious to see many others have had the same situation. I am asking that you help in this matter. I thought it would be a good idea to contact you first. I have already lost $200 in towing cost, when my car abandoned me. Basically, I found that I could not turn the key to start the car. The key would not go in. I tried to move the steering wheel at different intervals , but no luck after an hour in a dark garage. The key just wouldn't go in. I had it towed. I struggled to get the key in once I was home and in a safe place. I managed to push the key in after 30 minutes. A week has gone by and it has happened again. The key can't go in. I had to abandon my car again. I don't have an extended warranty but that is not the issue, the warranty would not cover it from y research. I feel I am trapped with this defect that is a common problem among others. Warranty or no warranty, this is a problem. . Read more...
From time to time, when depressing the gas pedal to accelerate (entering highway via on ramp, climbing moderate hill or grade, passing slower vehicle) there is initially no acceleration, then a sudden surge of power causing an uncontrolled acceleration.
Hard shifting, it hard shifts and it keeps getting worse. I was told it was the valve body but Volkswagen does not want to pay for it becuase it is a few miles over the 100,000 mile warranty when I have read many things saying that Volkswagen was having problems with the valve body.

Transmission failure. Won't shift from second to first. Or first to second. If engine is very hot it will most times but not at all if cold or warm.
Jetta 2005. 5 sedan (automatic) hard shifted between 2nd & 3th gears, displaying shuddering and hesitation during acceleration in traffic. Since October 2010 hard shifting has continued daily and frequency of shifting hesitation issue has worsened. Hard shifting with hesitation up between 3th and 4th, and also hard shuddering downshift between 3rd and 2nd. Dealer hooked vehicle to computer on Feb 14, 2011 and stated transmission has no errors. Dealer would not test drive for longer than 4 miles, dealer stated hard shift did not occur in that 4 mile period, test was not at freeway speeds, owner was not in the vehicle. Dealer states vehicle is not eligible for valve fix. Vehicle shifting failure is hazardous and dangerous highway condition.
Volkswagen Jetta 2006 headliner fabric failure. Separation of headliner fabric from headliner, creating a visibility obstruction. Possibly a danger to the drivers visibility. Clear manufactuers defect due to the amount of research done online. A substantial amount of owners have the same complaint. I have contacted Volkswagen directly. They have yet to initiate a mass recall on 2006 Volkswagen Jetta headliners, despite the numerous complaints brought to light by owners.
The instrument cluster, gear indicator, odometer, radio, outside temperature, compass, mpg, speed monitor and controls all the lighting features on car has failed. According to the service manager I deal with he told me that he has seen many of these clusters fail in 2005,06 Jetta's and passat's. The cost to replace is $650+ I feel this is a known manufacturing defect that vw does not want the public to know about. I can't read my odometer or even read what gear I am in. It is a safety concern. Can you help with this. I feel sorry for all the other vw owners that have a failed instrument cluster.
