36 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

My vw drivers side window fell into the door as I was driving along the highway last year. Brought it in to the body shop and they told me they fix tons of this problem as the plastic clips that hold the window are too fragile. Now. . . Several months later my passenger door is having the same problem. The cost of the regulator to fix it (as parts are not sold separatly) has now gone up in cost $50.

37 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Vehicle stumbles usually within the first couple of miles of travel after starting the vehicle. Usually occurs during mild acceleration and around 30-45 mph. Vehicle does this very often. I have read much about this problem on line and have been waiting to hear about a fix for the problem. Sounds like vw has still not offered up a solution to the problem after many months so I now wish to file this complaint. I had conversation with vw in which I was told that this is a diesel "personality trait". Well I believe this personality trait may also be responsible for several occasions of stalling of the vehicle when taking off from a start. The so called personality trait can occur when you are engaging the clutch from a standing still position. If this happens it causes the vehicle to stall. This is not safe. If true however I have no way to prove it. The only proof that is repeatable is the stumbling issue.

40 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

2010 Jetta tdi (diesel) - at less than 3,000 miles, the car began stalling when accelerating from a complete stop. This has occurred at least six times. Have to release foot from accelerator and re-apply in order to get car to move ahead; sometimes it takes multiple attempts to get the car to move. Once power is established, the car lurches forward at full power. The car currently has less than 6,500 miles. The stalling has occurred with oncoming traffic heading toward us and creates a very dangerous situation. Car has been to dealership several times for other minor issues, and is currently at dealership undergoing more research and work related to this problem. Another problem which started at around 5,000 miles was when I put the car in gear to drive, I heard a ratcheting-type of sound. This has happened at least three times. Dealer checked this out and advised no problem found.

41 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

There is a terrible smell that my car has on the interior now. It smells of melting burnt crayons. It is worse in the summer or when I run the heat. The smell stays on my clothes and other people smell it on me. It gives me headaches. (I am not the only one). Apparently it is from the sound-proofing and firewall? I read this in a forum. The smell is something that has developed over time and did not exist when I first purchaced the vehicle, used (not new), in 2006. I have seen many other complaints in forums and possible solutions and it seems that vw should just fix the problem or maybe not create the problem in the first place. If I had known that this would happen, then I would have never purchased this car. I will never buy another vw and I have even talked someone else out of buying a vw because of this. Maybe if vw cared a little more about fixing the problems and less about fattening their wallets!.

42 Unknown Or Other problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

I own a 1998 vw Jetta gl and have had to replace the transmission twice now because, I am told, vw increased the torque on Jettas of this year by adding a 5th gear, which results in excessive wear to the reverse gear and results in several reverse gear teeth chipping, thus rendering reverse inoperable. As I said before I have had to replace my transmission twice now due to the faulty reverse gear.

43 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Water ingress to interior of vehicle during rain. Front and rear footwells flooded, seems to be a common complaint. View internet search under Jetta water leaks.

44 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

Shortly after I bought car I noticed a noise coming from (sounded like) engine. I also noticed car not changing gears smoothly. Felt as if it was having a hard time shifting especially up hill, I took the car in and was told this is just how a vw shifts and sounds. I told them I did not notice it when I initially owned the car. They ran a diagnostic since now the engine light is on the windshield wipers come on at their own will, the clock looses time constantly, and the noise has got a lot worse and so has the gear shifting. The diagnostic they say showed the dual fans are both burned out. If they are burned out why are they still making a loud noise several seconds after I turn the car off? they have also told me no transmission problem exists but another dealer told me they cannot know that because the diagnostic will not pick up on a bad transmission only a totally failed one. Which the car will be out of warranty then. These cars have obvious transmission problems and electronic problems that are being ignored. After having all this problem I looked on internet and was astonished at the number of people with all the same problems as me. Slow and hard shifts, wipers, car acting as if it is stalling, clock losing time, battery going bad too quick. Brakes constantly bad. This car is just a lemon. Why will the government not do a total recall. There is tooooooo much wrong with tooooo many of them.

45 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/28/2008

Brake light switch failed and my car is stuck in park because it's impossible to shift when the brake light switch is faulty. This part has been recalled (n4), but I am forced to pay for a tow truck to get me to a dealer 20 miles away because the car is inoperable right now. Warranty is over but if it's a recall and the part in question is causing me to be stuck, why should I be the one paying for the tow?.

46 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/14/2008

The flywheel has failed and disabled the vehicle. This is an unsafe and under designed component of the drive train. The flywheel self destructed. In all my years I have never heard or experienced a flywheel self destruction on a car 2 years old with 30k miles.

47 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/19/2008

I inadvertently hit a pot hole. The pot hole was probably a little deeper than most. The driver's side-curtain airbag, the seat side airbag and the seatbelt tensioner were deployed. There was no damage to the car. There was no immediate danger to me. I did not lose control of the car even with the startling deployment of the safety systems. I was told by the guy in one of the body shops that I went to to get estimates that vws and bmws are known for their "touchy" airbag systems. I do not think that it is reasonable to have a $2700 repair bill, the inconvenience of all of the legwork to get my car fixed or the temporary non-functioning of my car's safety system just from hitting a pot hole! I am working on a claim and have not yet had the car repaired. Parts listed as being necessary to replace are: side curtain airbag, seat side airbag, seat belt/tensioner assembly, seat cover, a-pillar trim, headliner, sail panel trim, airbag sensor and airbag control module. Also, the car will need to be plugged into a computer analyzer in order that the airbag codes be reset.

48 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/23/2007

Bought a 2001 vw Jetta 1. 8t GLS wolfsburg three weeks ago. Rains hit me for the first time today and although all door seals are 100% proper, water leaks into driver's side footwells via hood latch release as best I can tell. Found the car flooded with 1-2 inches of water, soaked into carpet and carpet padding. Replacing the carpet and padding would cost around 1500 dollars. Fixing the obvious defect in drainage will probably cost about 300 from reading up on this issue. This is a documented issue with vws. . Read more...

49 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/14/2007

I have had this problem and from what I have read on forums online which is quit disturbing hundreds of other people have as well. There is water that forms on both the front passenger floor and sometimes the rear floor during rains. It is supposedly clogged drains. Shouldn't these drains be big enough to handle the flow of debris and water. It has happened in a lot of different models of vw according to the forums. And I am under a 2 year vw warranty but supposedly this isn't' covered according to the dealer. This could have ruined electronic stuff in my car or could as it gets wet. There was nothing about this in the manual or anything I had to find it out online.

The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta. When the contact opened the vehicle door, the passenger compartment smelled like melted crayons. The contact believed that the smell originated from the carpeting and the soundproofing material in the door and throughout the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technician was unable to determine the cause of the odor. No repairs were made at that time. The vehicle was taken to another dealer and they kept the vehicle for a week and washed the coils; however, they too could not locate the source of the smell. The current mileage was 68,800 and failure mileage was 65,000.

52 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/05/2006

I have had nothing but issues with my 2001 Jetta. I have replaced all the wheel bearings and the front bearing twice. I have also had to replace the engine coils twice on this car. Now in the last 2-3 weeks the clear coat has started to peel off the car. The paint is not coming off just the clear coat. I called the vw care center and they ran me around having me take the car to a vw body shop, and having the service manager look at it and neither one of them could tell me why the clear coat was peeling. They both did respond by saying the could be sure but in may have been over baked at the factory after it was painted but of course nobody want to admit that because then vw would be liable to fix it. So in calling the vw care center back the pretty much told me the car was 5 year old and it wasn't their problem any more but mine. Great customer service. I've owned other cars and never had a problem with the clear coat. Granted they were not vw cars. I recommend not to buy a vw of any kind because this company will not stand by their fault. I mean 5 years old that the clear coat is peeling off. That isn't right. Thanks for nothing vw. Don't buy a vw.

54 Unknown Or Other problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

This entire scenario is unacceptable for a car, I had hoped to keep, as I am told that vw's can well near to the 200,000 miles plus. I am told they are reliable and being on the road myself, that had been a point of comfort when I purchased the vehicle. Being of limited income capacity, I thought I made a wise investment to carry me for many years without a car payment. I am scared to death now that something drastic could happen because of this situation, be it a break down on a late evening, dark stretch of road or greater further damage to the vehicle as well as me personally. Mr. Witter, this is a major problem I want to believe you are not aware of, because a ceo of a company who purports service and a quality product would investigate and resolve such a large issue, in all cases, but most especially in warranty cases. There needs to be a major recall or someone will be injured or killed in an engine failure incident. You may end up finding yourselves in a class action suit. I believe proactive is more positive than reactive course of action. I look forward to a positive response from you indicating that you will have day apollo vw remedy my issue in the same manner the California dealer satisfied my sister's same defect. To date 3/2007 they continue the stance this is normal and refuse to service my vehicle for any future issue.

I have a 06' Jetta it has 10,000 miles on it and has had several problems. 1. Stero broke after 2 mo. And 6 cd's were stuck in damaged cd player and I still have not recieved them back like I was told after 4 months of being fixed. 2. Paint was peeling off front bumper, was repaired. 3. Back center console would not stay in place. 4. Steering wheel makes sqeaking noise when turned to the right. 5. Hazard button fell into dash. 6. Paint is now peeling again. 7. Chrome on wheel is peeling. 8. A brand new transmission had to be put in after 3 attempts of fixing it vw tech support told the valencia service department to just replace it. 9. When replacing the transmission the service department noticed that the drive shaft which is holding the axel spinndeles and wheels altogether to the steering wheel. The bolt was stripped and tech support said it was a factory malfunction and unsafe to drive unless fixed . We came to find out the squeaking noise from the steering wheel was due to this problem.

60 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/21/2005

To whom it may concern: my name is john b. Myers. I own a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta tdi that I purchased new on 3/10/03 from autohaus of lancaster in lancaster, PA. It now has 56,700 miles on it. (mostly highway) while driving on 6/21/05, I went to apply the brakes and the brakes got mushy and then grabbed and the pedal went to the floor in a sudden stop. As it was stopping you heard a sound like the vehicle now had air brakes. I depressed the pedal again the brakes let up. I was nearly rear ended by a truck the first time it happened. I pulled off the road and called the garage. It turned out to be a brake booster. Prior to this problem, while the vehicle was still under warranty at 48,000 miles, I had the vehicle in for service at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. It was in because several times I applied the brakes in the snow and the tires locked up. This vehicle has anti-lock brakes. At this time the anti-lock brakes ã‚did notã‚쳜 work. This happened several times. The dealership found no problems. They checked it and said all was ok. It happened again about a week after I got it out of the shop. My current mechanic (roberts automotive) who specializes in Volkswagens mentioned that he believes that two problems are very likely the same problem. The mechanic (pat roberts @ roberts automotive) also told me that he called the local dealership (autohaus of lancaster, PA) for the part, and he was told they replaced 8 of these brake boosters in the last two years. I also talked to the service manager at autohaus. Dave told me they have had several brake boosters go bad on the tdi models. The vehicle is now in the hands of autohaus. It sounds to me like there is a problem with quality and workmanship here. This is a definite safety issue. By sheer luck I was not hit by that truck. I will be sending a similar letter to Volkswagen of America with my complaint. Thank you for your cooperation. Regards, john b. Myers.

61 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/08/2005

September 2002 - leased 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t. July 2003 - check engine light came on, ignition coils had to be replaced per recall. November 2003 - plumes of black smoke came out of tailpipe - they determined the oxygen sensor needed replacing. November 2003 - (a day later) smoke still coming out of tailpipe, they determined there was oil in the turbo, they had to remove and install new turbo charger and there was an oil leak, they had to remove and install oil line. November 2003- car making whoosing noise, had to rescure loose intake hose. May 2004 - replace breaklight switch per recall. July 2004 - drivers side window fell - had to have both windows and clamps replaced per recall. (if this had happened after hours, my car could have easily been vandilized, fortunately it was during the day and I was near the dealer so they were able to get them wedged shut before they could get the car in to be fixed. ) July 2004 (a day later) - battery died, got jumped and was towed to shop, it was determined I needed a new battery. No problems for almost a year, thought I was homefree. . . May 2005 - clacking noise in engine, sludge on dipstick and in oil fill cap. No oil light or check engine light ever came on. Had to also have hazard switch replaced per recall. I am currently waiting to see if they will cover the repairs under my warranty. My car needs to have the oil pan removed to see if there is any further damage. I was never told to you use synethic oil in my car and that apparently is the cause of the sludge problem. From looking online, it seems many more people than just myself have had this problem. Vw needs to recall this.

64 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/05/2004

Auto: 2004 Jetta GLS 1. 8t on 4/20/2005, the dealership "riverbank motors" in stamford CT had to retorque turbo to exh manifold bolts. Car was returned fixed. After road test. On 7/1 2005 the front end exhaust diconnected and had to be towed to the dealership becuase it was undrivable. All warrantied. After being told numerous stories and misscommunications the service dept informed us that this time the bolts were stripped and the entire turbo unit needed to be replaced. Brought the car back for the 2nd time since the bolts were only temporarily tightened. The dealer is replacing the turbo unit under warranty but cannot explain why or how the bolts were stripped. "your guess is as good as mine" was the answer I received from the service director. Fortunately for me all warranty!!!! car is 1 year old.

65 Unknown Or Other problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/21/2004

I bought the car in August 2003, I noticed a repair docket from previous owner for left lower ball joint and left tie rod assemble w front end alignment on 5/29/03 at 34383 miles. I had a lot of noise under the engine. Vw capistrano checked it out and said it was driver side ball joint. I bought car from a Ford dealer who did not want anything to do with it. Finally, vw capistrano forced their hand and processed it through my then current warranty. At the time, I had 45k miles on the car. I thought it shocking that a car so young should have such a major problem (for the second time). When I picked car up, a couple of days later, I heard a loud crunching noise in the front left hand side of the motor or wheel. I thought nothing of it, drove it another 5000 miles, had to replace 4 tires, and asked the tire tech to check it out. He said it was the steering knuckle and it was in bad shape. I contacted vw who said, bad luck, it's only covered for 24k miles or 2years. I again am shocked, firstly because that's impossible one of these should go out so early, added to that, if the ball joint was replaced, then isn't the steering knuckle, moved in some way shape or form, so there should be some sort of recourse. This car is a lemon, however, CA law states it isn't. I was ripped off by theodore robbins in costa mesa and wouldn't recommend anyone buy from them, they were suspect from day one once I drove my car from their lot. Also, the back right seat belt is fixed to the seat and is unusable, I complained it was dangerous, Ford said too bad, you bought it that way fix it. Since then my horn has gone out because the car 'lost' it's under wheel cover and water got into the horn. This car reportedly had a 100 point inspection, which I believe to be not true. The radio has never worked a day, it's always 'fuzzy'.

My air conditioner went out on my 2000 vw Jetta. I figured it was something simple. I took it in to the dealership and they said that the compressor needed to be replaced. They said it was going to cost $1,400. 00+ to fix it! I don't understand how something this major could happen on a car that is only 3 years old!.

69 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/15/2003

I bought my car at the end of November. Drove it off the lot with 9 miles on the vehicle. At the time of breakdown on July 25, 2003, the car had 10,900 miles on it. The current mileage on it now is 13,000 July 25th was a very hot day. I believe it was up to 110 degrees that day. I had noticed my car running at a substantial lower power than usual, but I assumed it was because of the heat and that I had my air conditioning on high. I had to do some errands in town then I headed home, which is about 30 minutes away from the tri-cities, at this time I did notice loss of power going up the on-ramp to the interstate, but still did not think too much of the fact. I was half way home when I noticed that my car was losing even more power, the cruise quit and my speedometer went from 75 to 50 mph and that is when I noticed that my heat gauge was extremely high. I also found it odd that the inside of my car had not cooled off, but was getting warmer. I headed towards the off-ramp and as I was down shifting and applying the breaks, my brake pedal made ;puffy-popping noise and then the brake pedal collapsed to the floor. I put the vehicle in neutral and pumped the brakes to get the vehicle to stop, when the vehicle stopped, I smelled heat, or like something burning. I thought it was a fire around town. Pulling away from the off-ramp, I could not get any pickup speed with my car. The car felt like it was pushing to go forward and also pulling itself back at the same time, as the vehicle tried to pick up speed, it would pull back and forth. The gas pedal was all the way to the floor and I couldn't get any speed. I could only shift into second gear and the vehicle could only maintain 15 mph. As all of this was happening, I was turning off everything I thought took power, air conditioner was the first thing off when I started noticing the car overheating and losing power, then the radio, these did not help.
