2006 New Beetle convertible, 5 speed transmission, purchased new by myself as sole owner. Driving down road on 12/4/11 late at night suddenly could not shift gears; car would not go into any gear, causing me to have to coast in neutral through dangerous intersection in a major urban city. Car was disabled and had to be towed to shop. "transmission failure" diagnosed at only 31,800 miles? (damaged transmission parts discovered - but vw denies any responsibility). This problem appears to be widespread in beetles, has been reported by many owners on public internet message boards, and sooner or later someone is going to be killed in an accident as a result. Personally I was lucky no one was behind me or approaching at a norrnal speed head on; had that been the case I would clearly have been in a major accident.

The blue temp gauge comes on for a short period of time. . . Then when I slow down the jumps/jerk really hard. . . I notice it only does when I slow down. . . . To avoid it I try to let the car slow down on its own but it still does it. . . . Others that ive discussed the issue with advised me that it may be the transmission. . . And upon researching the vw beetle I found out that im not the only person experiencing this is issue and that it is indeed the transmission.

My 2004 beetle ran fine for the first several months after a purchased it from the dearler, now the car stops running at 65 mph on the freeway several times a week, during my travel to work. I have read several posted on the internet stating the same issues from thousands of vw owners. This is a serious problem. I have had my car diagnosis stating I need to replace the trans, but theres no indication trans failure. One week there car runs great then, next it stops during travel and has jerky feels during movement. I'm sure there hundred of thousands of complaints of the same issues and that's just one of the many too many to list.

Dear madam / sir,
two days ago I had and accident with my "2008 and still under warranty car". I dropped the car at the rockville, MD official dealer, then I called the insurance company and my insurance agent. The three (agent, insurance inspector and dealer) inspected the car and approved a $1,440 spending to fix it. Since I got surprised; I asked the reason of the very low repairing labor and parts exchange costs of a sub-frame vw part # vw1j0-199-313-m (large steel part to supporting the engine, suspension and transmission), transmission oil pan part #vw09g-321-361-a (place where the oil transmission is keep), and a center shield engine-transm axle a large and heavy underbody protecting metallic part. They said these days it is a common rule to recycle used parts from similar vehicles, and low costs of the "used parts" utilized to fix my car (no matter the key role of the parts). At this point I am asking myself:
what about safety? in any way? not only used parts from other cars have not quality inspected, even worse I guess this practice encourage the cars stilling. Are we all (customers) aware of this?, is it any ". Org" or ". Gov" organization which regulates these used parts market? are we protecting our safety? can we as a customers complaint somewhere about this?
please give me your opinion. Thank you so much.

In August 2008 I went to have my oil changed at a Volkswagen dealer in kalamazoo, mi. They said that the aluminum oil pan plug had been overtightened and the pan was ruined. I was told that potentially the plug could have fallen out at any point in time, leaving me in a dangerous situation, either stranded somewhere but most likely causing a crash. They told me that the aluminum pans wear out and need to be replaced, but this car had only 35,000 miles on it at the time. Something like an oil pan shouldn't just "wear out" after that short a time. They also told me I was better off replacing the aluminum pan with the steel because the aluminum was susceptible to punctures from almost anything. The new Volkswagens are being manufactured with steel pans and Volkswagen should be willing to replace the old aluminum free of charge. The new pan cost me $293. 69.
I have a 2002 vw New Beetle. Problem. . Engine light comes on, then goes off. Had many costly repairs. Problem reoccurs. Mechanic stated that I may need a new catalytic. Have been told that car maintains an 80,000 or 7 year warranty. Is this true and if so how do I get my car fixed ASAP before this warranty expires? car has 54000 miles and is now 7 years.
Attempted to stop in driveway, engine raced out of control, could not stop and hit utility trailer in yard, car came to stop because of collision, shifted into car still in garage being fixed.
Oil light was coming on for no reason. It was full of oil
the dealer replaced the sensor and in a month it was doing it again but this time the temperature light was coming on and staying too.

When changing the oil, a frame support pan found only on convertible catches the motor oil. This support pen is concaved and traps a large mount of oil. If not wiped out with rags it stays there causing a potential fire hazard from a spark.
