I have a 2001 vw New Beetle. I have replaced brake light, which was drains the battery, serpentine belt, remoteless key which is still broken- basically 6 days after buying this car- I spent $1200 on repairs- now the check engine light is on, the transmission is acting funny, and basically- my vw dealership has a field day with me. To top it off- my battery died a month ago- and caught on fire when I tried to jump it. I am afraid that this car will blow up on me at any time. Please help me!.
I recently purchased a 2000 vw New Beetle on October 10, 2007. My significant other drove the car to work. When she got ready to leave the car would not start. She called a mechanic and they checked the vehicle. They determined that the timing belt had broken. The car has less than 90,000 miles on it. I went a researched and found other similar complaints about low mileage beetles of this year having the same problem. I am concerned that such an expensive repair is required at such low mileage in order to own this vehicle and have it operate properly. I am not the original owner so I realize that this repair is not covered for me. There should be some form of disclaimer placed on this year of beetle so that perspective owners will know that they have an expensive repair coming up (timing belt) if it hasn't been corrected already.

Car has been a problem since first week of ownership. Many electrical problems. Aaa has seen this car more than I have over the last 2 years. Currently at 51,000 miles the timing belt broke causing serious engine damage. Vw says it is out of warranty even though I bought a certified vehicle with an extended warranty. Whoever heard of a timing belt breaking at 51,000 miles!!!.
I have a 2000 vw beetle with 47,500 original miles on it. I am the original owner. I purchased it in may of 2000 from cooley. . I have closely followed the maintenance schedule with regular oil changes etc. I have been very well pleased with this car despite some unusual problems. For example, I have had an issue with a sensor that caused the car to stall ( shortly after the warranty expired). That cost me $100. Then at about 35k I was told that I needed brakes $400 +. On Saturday July 16, 2005 I was enroute to wells, maine. Approximately 15 miles before my destination, the engine temperature light came on. I immediately pulled off the road and had the car towed to my destination. After the car had cooled, we inspected the hoses and coolant and belt. Everything seemed to be ok and we though everything was good so we started out to come home (Sunday July 17th, 2005) a short distance into the trip ( 5 -10 miles). Heat indicator light came on again. I immediately pulled off and the turnpike authority came by, called a tow and the car was towed to brown's auto repair in wells, maine. My friend, who is the facilities manager for the wells school district, has his fleet of cars and trucks serviced there so I believed the repair shop to be reputable. Mr. . Brown, replaced the thermostat, the water pump, fan motors, sensors, serpentine belt, timing belt and coolant etc. At a cost of $1396. . The first towing expense was covered by my roadside assistance. Both mr. . . Brown and the vw dealership where the replacement parts were purchased seemed to think that I should not be having these kinds of problems with the low mileage. I agree. I want to know what recourse I have. If other beetle owners have experienced similar issues and problems. I have owned five other vw automobiles and am a vw lover but this does not make me a happy vw owner.

I own a 1999 New Beetle with the 2. 0 engine with 37,000 original miles. The car quit running approx. 2 1/2 yrs ago, approximately two months after I purchased it from a certified Volkswagen dealer, used. A few days after delivery there was a rotten egg smell, check engine light on, engine sluggish. After one month the battery went dead completely. Replaced the battery, car would not run. Battery dead again after four days. I found info on the internet that security system must be set or the battery will last only four days. Inspected plugs, found heavy carbon buildup. Inspected pre O2 sensor, found same. Decided to overhaul eng. Found heavy carbon on tops of pistons and valves. Machine shop had to replace pistons, rings, all bearings, oil pump, plane the cylinder head, plane the head mating surface, replace seals, turn the flywheel. I had to also replace the water pump, timing belt, clutch, throwout bearing, O2 sensor, plug wires, and the dipstick holder. After considerable money spent, engine would start but not run. I found out from the dealer that if electrical power is lost, vehicle must be towed to a Volkswagen dealer and be reprogrammed. It will not run until that is done. The reason given was that Volkswagen did not want any owners to fix their own car. This could be a signifigant safety issue in a life threatening situation! there are reports on several internet forums of the original batteries blowing up and even after replacement of the battery the vehicle would not run until it was reprogrammed. Volkswagen should be required to fix this problem. I would like to see a full investigation on this model to see if it should be sold in the us. There are too many reported defects on this model to list here, some that apply to this car, that are much more dangerous than I described here. I hope that our government will straighten this company out and that owners will somehow be compensated.

Driving on a two lane road in an isolated area, limited shoulder; without warning car stopped running. Had to be towed to a service station & then to a dealer. It turned out the timing belt had failed and had destroyed the vavles and pistons requiring a new engine to fix. My car had 99,000 miles on it. Warranty on timing belt for first owner is to 100,000 miles. Vw service recommendations say the timing belt should be replaced at 105,000 miles for year 2000 models. I am concerned not only about the extraordinary cost that is involved in repairing this failure but also in the fact that there is no warning and it caused complete failure of my engine. I have read about other timing belt failures on this vehicle. Dealer asked for and was supplied invoices for every repair and oil change but repair under the warranty was denied because I did not have the vehicle serviced by a dealer at 60,000 & 80,000 miles. I called the 800 number for vw but Volkswagen was completely uninterested in my story. The only time the issue of checking the timing belt was mentioned to me was after it broke! even when I had other service performed at 88,000 miles by the dealer. My feeling is this type of failure which is so severe that it requires a new engine is unacceptble and unexpected. I have owned other cars of a different make that had well over 100,000 miles with little or no problems. Why would vw recommend replacing the timing belt at 100,000 miles if there is a probability that it may not even make it that far? what use is a 100,000 mile power train warranty if there are so many loop holes that vw does not expect to have to honor the warranty?.
Water pump broke, causing the timing belt to break which resulted in all valves bent and an engine rebuild. The car had 69,000 miles. . . Vw manual says manitenance at 120,000 miles.
