36 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

There is an unsafe prolonged hesitation when depressing the accelerator pedal on the 2006 Volkswagen Passat 3. 6 liter 4 motion. When depressing the accelerator pedal, nothing happens until you've depressed the pedal approx. 3/4 to an inch of pedal travel, then all of a sudden, the car lurches and accelerates at what feels like half to full throttle. It is a random hesitation, yet occurs at probably 30% of the time. It is most noticeable when starting from a stop, yet will happen on the highway, if accelerating to pass. This is a very dangerous malfunction. If this abrupt acceleration occurs in snowy or icy conditions, it could cause a loss of control. I have experienced several times, when I expected my car to move forward when I depressed the gas pedal, only to have it hesitate and nearly cause an accident. This car has a drive by wire accelerator, which I believe is a fairly recent design change. We have another car with the same type of system which does not do this. I have read 2 new car reviews that have mentioned this problem with this particular model. After taking delivery, I called to tell the service department of this problem. After trying to convince me that this was "normal", they took my car in to try to resolve the problem. It was there for 10 days, during which time 2 engineers came out from Volkswagen to look at the car. They agreed that there was something amiss, and felt that they needed a software update installed. There was not one available, and I was told on March 30th that it would be ready within 30 days. It has now been 3 months since then, and multiple phone calls later, a fix is still not ready. I have been told that it is ready, but waiting government approval, and then told that nothing is ready. No one at Volkswagen customer service has been able to give me an estimated time when my car can be repaired. There is really no "incident" to report, other than an unsafe malfunction which needs to be corrected.

37 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/15/2005

I have a 2001 Passat with 66,xxx miles on it and the transmission went out. It is going to cost 4000. 00-5000. 00 to have this fix. I do not think a car with this many miles should have a transmission go out and to top it off when I purchased this car 6 months ago with 51,060 from walsher in bloomington, mn they said I had a 10yr/100,000 mile power train warranty on it, well come to find out since I am a second owner it only goes to 50,000 miles which means *jbwhen I purchased the car it didn't even have the warranty.

39 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/10/2005

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Passat. While driving approximately 55 mph, the "stop vehicle do not drive", and oil pressure warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The indicators remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and they repaired the engine. The previous repair required the vehicle to remain at the dealer for one month. On three separate occasions, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. In addition, during rainy weather conditions, five inches of water leaked onto the front passenger side floor panel. There was electrical failure due to the water leakage that caused gear component damage. Recently, the contact received a recall notice that consists of installation of a drainage filter and fuel system component repair. The vehicle has not been repaired for these malfunctions. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The failure mileage was 36,000 and current mileage was 85,000.

41 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/27/2005

1) I was driving along a major highway (I-75) when I saw someone driving erratically, weaving in and out of traffic in my rear-view mirror. He looked close to hitting me, so I accelerated to not allow his car to do this. 2) after stepping on the gas, and getting out of danger, my car would not slow down. I would step on the brake, and it would slow, but once I let off on the brake the car would surge foward (without me even pressing the gas). I did not have cruise control on at all. 3) I was unable to have the car stop suddenly accelerating. Once I was able to pull off to the side of the higway, I put the car into neutral and then back to drive and that was able to solve the problem. Though if there was more traffic I worry if I would be able to pull of to the side of the road safely, while having to press my brake the entire time. 2000 volkswagon Passat v6.

42 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/03/2004

This vehicle had multiple problems. Consumer noticed that the abs braking system failed, and the srs air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Consumer was able to shift the vehicle into drive and reverse without the vehicle being turned on. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the abs braking system, and the srs air bag light module needed to be replaced. Also, a transmission problem.

43 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/09/2004

Just about evrery time I drive my car there seems to be a lurching in the transmission when I start driving and when I start to slow down(5-15mph). The dealer(cooley Mazda, vw in east greenbush,NY) said there was no problem, but after checking with your site I found out I wasn't alone. Any help would be great.

44 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/28/2004

When slowing down at traffic light car hesitated and then jerked foward, as if I had been hit from behind. It was enough to make my back and neck sore. I touched the accelerator pedal to give the car some gas and the engine freely revved, even thought the transmission indicated it was in 'drive'. The car has developed a hesitation to accelrate before the incident, and after. The car has also been showing signs of excessive fuel consumption.

45 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/04/2004

Automatic transmission lurched on down shift when coming to a stop. While driving at any speed momentary hesitation particularly in an intersection. The dealership has inspected on several times and could not duplicate or correct the problem. Please provide further information. Dealership corrected the problem with vehicle and consumer wished to rescind report from complaint database.

46 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/08/2004

While driving 70 mph the vehicle decelerated without warning. The consumer was able to coast to the side of the road. Please provide additional information.

47 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/03/2004

I own a 2004 vw Passat wagon v-6 and there is a problem with the transmission. The car bucks/jumps when decelerating into lower or accelerating into higher gear. It causes jerking of the vehicle at times. Dealer checked the car on two different occasions but claimed that it found nothing wrong when a systems checked was run. Dealer was unable to replicate the problem on a test ride. Contacted vw to no avail.

48 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/06/2004

I have a 2001 new Passat glx awd sedan with 23,000 miles. The automatic transmission has multiple problems, at least two with safety ramifications: (1) from a standstill start, the transmission will often produce a several second lag before synchronizing with the engine - the safety concern is that the car does not move at a rate of speed the driver could normally expect and may leave the driver and occupants exposed to collision from on-coming cars at difficult traffic intersections and merges; (2) at low speeds, 15 mph and lower, the transmission often clunks into gear causing a forward surge of the vehicle, creating the risk of the vw rear ending a vehicle in stop and go traffic. Vw has been unable to fix the problems.

49 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

While driving on the highway between 60-70 mph vehicle will down shift. When sitting in traffic vehicle will surge forward. Consumer was very concerned. Contacted the manufacturer. When driving 65 the vehicle will upshift or downshift on its own.

50 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/10/2004

2004 Passat with 4wd, car jumps forward when coming to a halt, clearly a safety hazard but NHTSA seems unwilling to accept the complaint. I have entered it three times without it showing up on the list. I guess campaign money talks louder than consumers.

51 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/07/2004

I have a 2004 vw Passat with a safety issue in the transmission. When I accelerate at slow speeds it hesitates before taking off and then bam, it's like some one hit you in the back of the car and the car jumps in gear. It does not happen all the time. But the transmission seems real slow going into first gear and it does with a clunk.

52 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/31/2004

When the vehicle was being slowed down the gears would slam into place. Also when trying to accelerate, the vehicle didnt respond immediately. This problem has occurred at least thirty times since buying the vehicle in March. The dealer is aware of the problem and vw America is working on a solution.

53 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/12/2004

I have a vw Passat 4-motion wagon tiptronic that exhibits the problem of refusing the downshift from second into first at slow speeds when the accelerator is pushed firmly. Then, the engine races wildly for an instant and then "bangs" into gear. The dealer acknowledges the problem, but thus far there's no fix for it. Engine: 2. 8 v6 year: 2000 gear: moving from 2nd into 1st erratic and seems somewhat heat-related--worst in hot weather first noticed: about 49,000 miles car can be downright dangerous if problem occurs while merging onto a busy highway. Refer to audiworld web page for similar owner Audi quattro problems with 2. 7l v6 and tiptronic.

54 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/01/2004

I bought the car new in October 2003, I noticed intermittent jerking of the transmisssion especially when slowing, accelerating slightly and then coming to a stop. The jerking is surprising and uncomfortable, but has not yet caused an accident. I had the car into the dealer for 9 days in March. They were able to reproduce the problem ,but had no way to fix it. I have been told it was a software problem and that a fix would be available: first in may, then in June, and now still no fix.

55 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/22/2004

My transmission on a 2004 Passat wagon all wheel drive (v6) engine slips and startles me very frequently. When the vehicle is slowed down it bucks violently as if I was rear ended by another vehicle. So far, volkswagon gave me a replacement car (since it was a brand new car). However, the replacement car is doing the very same thing. This problem is potentially dangerous because it feels as if you're being rear ended. Also, it creates a potential danger on the roads. Volkswagon originally said it was the all wheel drive (but this is simply not the case). Now, they're saying the transmission needs to be "flashed"? I will be filing a lemon law complaint against the company. I fear that many other vehicles have the same problem and they're being ignored or swept under the carpet. I would really hope that someone in your organization would investigate this complaint and will bring this potentially serious problem to the attention of volkswagon. At at minimum perhaps, they should recall these vehicles and send out a notice to owners of this vehicle type. Please plead my cause with vigor and determination. Sincerely, david deboskey.

56 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/10/2004

I have a 2004 vw Passat with a safety issue in transmission. When accelerating from a stop or low speed the car hesitates and then jumps. The problem is most severe in reverse gear. The dealership has no resolution. After changing multiple parts the problem still occurs. I have talked with other 2004 Passat and touareg owners and they have the same complaint, so it appears to be affecting more than a single vehicle. Can the NHTSA do somthing to help vw owners by forcing vw to acknowledge this issue and find a resolution before someone gets hurt. Right now their dealers and engineers do not have a fix!.

57 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

59 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/07/2004

Car would not go in reverse. Finally after trying again it did and brought to mechanic. Probably a transmission problem. Towed to dealer. From then on its been a nightmare. Two weeks later and they still have my car. The transmission needed to be replaced (covered under powertrain), just about every day get a call that something else needs replacing. Was told that the mass air flow censor needed replacing and was covered. Gave approval. Week later got call that its not covered (any other store would have to honor the incorrect price tag and eat that cost-no-not the dealer!). All electrical problems. Error code flagged 10 problems when originally brought in. Outer cv boots worn, harness (some kind of electrical wiring going to censor), coolant hose, 2nd air hose. The electrical system in that car has been inferior since day one. Hoses and parts replaced within first month of owning new car. Inferior on vw and awful response from vw. Had recall on filter leading to air flow censor. Seems to me that the mass air flow censor is also problem and should be under recall. Have read prior complaints on this year/model and seems the electrical system itself is major problem.

60 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/02/2003

Brake failure light appears even after multiple brake repairs. Driver?s side rear upper brake light replaced for 29th time in less than 2 yrs. Multiple coolant leaks still present even after repair and water pump replacement. Radio/amplifier not functioning even after replacement (radio was only used twice in vehicle?s lifetime). Diagnostics show airbag malfunction. Regulator pin on rear passenger side window keeps breaking (3rd replacement since 2003). Engine cover below car keeps falling off due to rusted bolts. Homelink system keeps malfunctioning. Fuses keep blowing out. Dashboard panel lights out (odometer, fuel gauge, etc. ). Ccm module keeps breaking down. Car needs to be jumpstarted when not in use for over 48 hrs. Climate control (a/c and heater) works only sporadically. All repairs performed by vw dealership, yet same issues keep reappearing just a few weeks after repairs. Repairs performed in past 2 years: ecu unit replaced, brake light switch replaced 3 times, a/c compressor unit replaced, abs module replaced, alternator replaced, brakes replaced 3 times.

62 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/21/2002

I have complained to the dealer at 20,000 miles and at 40,000 mile that the transmission downshifts very harshly at times. The dealer stated this is normal??? and if I wanted them to look at it, I would have to pay for it up-front, and that the powertrain warranty would cover it only if they found something wrong. The sunroof has a "broken track" after 40,000 mi. It costs more to fix it than it did to buy it! is this a problem throughout all vw's?.

63 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/15/2001

When at a stop or driving transmission will not shift to higher gear. Engine will race, rpm's go up, and vehicle will not accelerate. Vehicle has been taken to dealer 4 times, cannot remedy the problem.

66 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/22/2001

Airbag warning light turned on starting 02/12/2001. It was check by the dealer on 03/06/2001 but no problem was found and cleared code. Three days later airbag warning light turned on again with airbag fault sign was also on. Took to dealer on 03/22/2001 along with the new transmission problem. The car was towed in because of the transmission pan, gasket punctured and oil leaking. The dealer service replace the airbag and upper harness under warranty of the car, while transmission repair was charge to my insurance. My safety complaint is that the transmission pan is maybe too low to the ground that it can easily be punctured, which may cause serious transmission problem. And for the airbag warning sign turned on, the airbag will not deploy if accident occurs or may accidentally deploy while driving.

67 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Passat

Cold engine hesitation causing car to downshift, as if you were applying brakes, forcing you to accelerate.

69 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/10/1999

The car is on it's second transmission with only 47000 miles, and having problems with it. Doesn't want to shift into higher gear and clunks sometimes. Headlights did not work for first 4 months we owned the car. Dealer could not find the problem. Sunroof opens and closes by itself. Dealerships have not found the problem. Map light has started to do the same. Indicator lights go on and off. Dealer says he has never heard of a problem with the wiring on these cars and that it is safe to drive.
