The automatic transmission does not want to downshift. Per the manufacturer instructions/owner manual when the vehicle was new, the oil change for the automatic transmission was not recommended in contrary. That change in few years in vw books but the consumers where never informed about it. The issue started when the vehicle had about 74000 miles but it was past the number of years for the power-train warranty (probably 8 or more). The issue happens when a brisk acceleration or going uphill and maintaining speed is required. When accelerating the transmission should down shift two gears from sixth to fourth for example, the transmission bogs down and the whole car shakes violently and losses speed. I've tried to fix the issue by changing the transmission oil at the dealer and that was when I found out that they revers course on changing fluid for the automatic, however that did not fix the issue and vw did not want to fix it or take responsibility for the issue.

As my son got on the highway the transmission felt like it was slipping and jerking to then catch back up to the original speed I was going. When he put his foot on the gas pedal the car would struggle to go, 5 seconds later it would get up to speed but then slow back down. At a stoplight the car would shake roughly and idle really high, then he saw the front of the hood start to smoke and I realized there was a problem.

The contact owns a 2008 Volkswagen Passat. The dealer replaced the front axle at 2,200 miles because the vehicle was shaking severely. When the temperature drops below 50 degrees, the vehicle does not shift into gear and has to be warmed up for at least twenty minutes before it will shift. In addition, the air conditioning system has to be replaced because it was only emitting hot air. The radio also does not work on occasion. The contact has only owned the vehicle for eight months. The automatic transmission does not work and the dealer advised that it be replaced. There were no recalls available. The failure mileage was 12,000. Updated 5/27/09

For: 99 volkswagon Passat wagon
while my wife and I were parking in front of a bank, in a sudden the car shoke violently; we stopped without turning the engine off. . . The car was shaking very hard still. We then had this car diagnozed at a firestone service center nearby. After a day, the mechanic mentioned that there's misfiring in cylinder 2, and it's common thing in Passat (I did not know this until then), but vw never issued a recall. So they asked me to leave the car for an extra day so they could solve the problem. Another day passed, they informed me that they needed more time; they tried to replace the coil, it's still misfiring, and they mentioned more trials, but those were not good too. They suggested me to bring the car to the dealership. One hour before I wrote this to NHTSA, I researched the internet and I found similar occurances of misfiring from cylinders, and a few has the same type: 99 Passat. Here is what I had found:

I purchased a brand new vw Passat GLS 2002, on June 18, 2002 at commonwealth vw Audi, 1450 auto mall drive, santa ana CA 92705. Unfortunately, the vw Passat GLS 2002 has not held up to its promise of being a well-engineered car. After less than 9 months of ownership, I had to bring the car to the dealership for repairs 3 times, which is a far drive from my present residence in highland, CA. I purchased a brand new car with the intention of having a reliable mode of transportation for the two-hour trip back and fourth from tustin to ontario on a daily basis for work. I had confidence in Volkswagen because of its prestigious reputation. Having successive car problems has made me reluctant to drive this car. The first breakdown was in oct. 2002, the mil (malfunction indicator lamp) light came on, the car started to shake, and it lost power on my way to work. I was able to make it and I had the car towed to the dealership. The dealership replaced the defective ignition coil, and set the readiness code. I did not get a loaner car, and the car was left at the dealership for two days. The second time, was in Dec. 2003. The exact same problem arose. This time they had replaced all four ignition coils, set the readiness code, and supplied me with a vw rental. The car was in the shop for two days as well. I had lost all confidence in the Passat I purchased. The third occasion, as I exited the freeway to get to work, the mil light came on again. I was at a complete stop. When I pressed on the gas, the car jerked two times. I made it to the parking lot of my job, and had the car towed yet another time. This was March 18, 2003. The dealership removed and installed the automatic transmission fluid pan, the transmission speed sender, and the vehicle speed sensor. They supplied me with a 3-day loaner car. The Passat stayed in the shop for 4 days.
