2018 vw Tiguan. The fuel injector harness failed. There is a NHTSA letter stating 2018-2019 Tiguans had this issue and there’s an extended warranty up to 120,000 miles. My Tiguan is at 91,000 miles, but vw is saying the warranty isn’t assigned to my VIN. So there’s a warranty for this exact issue and year, but my vehicle isn’t covered. This warranty obviously needs to be extended by build date as it’s a pretty costly repair.

I am filing this complaint because my Volkswagen Tiguan has a serious and ongoing engine issue involving excessive oil consumption and a faulty cylinder head. The vehicle burns through an abnormal amount of oil between changes, requiring constant top?offs, sometimes as frequently as every few hundred miles. Despite regularly adding oil and following all manufacturer?recommended maintenance, the issue continues to worsen. The dealership has confirmed that the cylinder head is defective, which is causing the engine to consume oil at an extremely accelerated rate. However, I have been told the replacement cylinder head is on national backorder, and there is currently no estimated timeframe for when the part will be available. This means I am forced to continue driving a vehicle with a known, documented engine defect that can: lead to engine stalling create loss of power while driving increase the risk of engine seizure potentially cause a safety hazard on the road additionally, being required to constantly add oil just to keep the vehicle operable is not only unsafe but financially unreasonable. The problem remains unresolved despite multiple service visits, documentation, and repeated oil consumption tests. This is a safety issue, not just a maintenance concern, because the engine can fail unexpectedly if the oil drops too quickly. I believe this is a significant defect affecting multiple Volkswagen vehicles and should be investigated by NHTSA. I request that NHTSA open a formal investigation into the excessive oil consumption and cylinder head defects on Volkswagen Tiguans, as owners should not be left with unsafe vehicles due to known manufacturing issues and unavailable critical engine components.

The cylinder head has passages that collect carbon build up that build up outside of general maintenance that clog the cylinder head and can eventually lead to combustion failure. This car has been taken to an independent, reputable mechanic in the area, as well as now the dealer. Dealer has confirmed they have at least 4 other vehicles currently with the same issue in just this one location, and parts replacement to remedy the issue (new cylinder heads) are on back order (over 2500 on order in us). This car has been caught early, before this engine failure, as the check engine light first came up and multiple rounds of mechanic checking and trying to fix have lead to this conclusion. Car at this time has not failed in a safety situation, but has the potential to if not remedied, by engine failing while driving. Engine has been inspected by mechanic, and is currently being inspected by manufacturer. Error code was presented once reading the module, and check engine light is visible to prompt servicing the car (code for emissions).
Feb 2026 my airbag light came on few days ago, now my horn doesn't work, and the functions on the steering wheel don't work, like being able to reset tire pressure and check functions for the car, the phone, the radio/cd information. Jan 2025 my seat belt (driver ) lock is broken ,to attach the seat belt in place. . I have to just keep it clicked in, and put it over my shoulder (over a yr now) also , as of Aug 2025, my car keeps having issues of stalling/ bucking, even though my mechanic has changed the points/plugs twice now. And the overheat light comes on now, off and on. . Sometimes clears up once the car is shut off and then turned back on. . Some times has to sit for a while, then clears up I see no recall on my car VIN #, for these issues??? how can that be possible???.

5 complaints about oil consumption, 3 check engine lights where had to pull over due to car not running properly. Vehicle putters upon acceleration. Replaced leak detection pump, intake and exhaust system stem seals, oil separator, auxiliary bracket and seal and evap sensor.
My fuel system level indicator does not work properly when the tank is below 1/2 full, and the check engine light comes on. It does not correctly deplete, instead leaving me with no gas when it shows it still has gas available. This has left me stranded in various locations as my car runs out of gas, but doesn't show me that until it is completely empty. Most recently, it was on a very busy road in the middle of traffic. The gas gauge went from 1/2 full to empty while I was driving. Upon taking it to the dealer, they said to replace the 1 sensor, which is a very small, simple piece, they have to replace the entire fuel system, which is over $5000 in repairs. My car is only 4 years old and only out of warranty by 6 months. Further research shows this is a common issue with the make and model of my car. Many seem to happen under warranty, but with the age my car is now, many of these warranties will expire, leaving owners to have to pay to fix this outrageous, costly repair.

I was at a complete stop at the red light, vehicle began shaking and shut down. Gears would not work therefore I was not able to put it in neutral to at least push out of the road. The vehicle then began cranking on and off on its own, without me pushing start/stop engine. This was completely unexpected as the truck is one week old, had a full tank of gas and it was especially dangerous to have shut down on a busy highway. Also when reversing the vehicle makes a weird click noise.

I am reaching out regarding ongoing and escalating issues with my 2022 vw Tiguan r-line black. Over the past year, I have had to stop at jiffy lube multiple times because the oil level kept running low, and they repeatedly topped it off. I found this unusual, given how recently oil changes and services had been performed. This summer, the vehicle began experiencing episodes of stuttering and stalling, accompanied by smoke from the tailpipe. Over labor day weekend, after another stall, I brought the car into the vw dealership. They investigated but were unable to identify the cause. Unfortunately, the situation has now worsened. Today alone, the car stalled twice — both times in the middle of traffic. The “check oil level” warning light came on, followed shortly by the “check engine” light. There was also a significant amount of smoke coming from the tailpipe. This is not only a mechanical issue but also a serious safety concern. I have two children, and I am deeply concerned for their lives and safety when driving a vehicle that stalls unpredictably in traffic. At this point, the car feels unsafe and unreliable, and I am unsure how to proceed. Please advise me on next steps regarding potential legal recourse, warranty coverage, or claims I may pursue. Thank you for your guidance. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Subject: ongoing mechanical and electrical issues – 2022 vw Tiguan I’m experiencing ongoing issues with my 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, purchased new and maintained under single ownership. Primary issue: the vehicle shuts off unexpectedly under various driving conditions—while accelerating on the highway, from a stop at traffic lights, and especially when going uphill or over high bridges. The issue initially occurred once or twice a year around 45,000 miles but has become more frequent. As of 70,000 miles, it now happens on a weekly basis. When this happens, the only way to temporarily resolve the issue is to turn off the vehicle completely and wait approximately 5 minutes before restarting. Recent maintenance completed: new car battery (3 battery since purchase of car) new spark plugs (replaced in June 2025) regular oil changes (every 3000 miles) new engine air filter and cabin air filter (yearly) additional symptoms: the rear-view camera frequently times out or fails to display when reversing. The dealership has not been able to confirm the cause but has mentioned a potential error code p30de00, suggesting alternator replacement. However, a second opinion found no active error codes, leaving the root cause unclear. I'm seeking a definitive diagnosis and a resolution plan, as the issue has become a safety concern.
Due to a faulty pcv valve, the entire engine wiring harness needed to be replaced at 69,000 miles. The valve cover and camshafts were replaced, engine components were reassembled with mandatory bolts and gaskets. Lower timing cover was leaking on the passenger side due to the faulty pcv valve and the caracole canister and leak detection pump. These were replaced along with the canister due to oil contamination. The evap lines were blown out and the n80 valve was replaced. As a result, the vehicle sustained $7,200 in repairs because of the damage to the engine due to the faulty pcv valve.
This stalling issue has occurred three times so far, most recently on [xxx], while exiting [xxx] . Each time, the stall happens when I attempt to accelerate after coming to a complete stop in traffic, at a light, or at a stop sign. When it occurs, the vehicle will not move forward, and multiple rapid warning messages appear on the dashboard. The only way to recover is to shift into park, power the car off, and then restart the engine. After restarting, the vehicle will usually operate normally, allowing me to continue driving. I brought to vw dealership pasadena -- they have been unable to diagnose the cause of stalling! text from dealership below! this happened exiting the freeway this is very dangerous. +1 (818) 293-1855: we cleared all codes and going to give the car back to you for now-the recall adhesive needs to cure till end of the day-pick up at 4pm --ron hancock Volkswagen pasadena +1 (818) 293-1855: no-will have a plan of action and we can discuss --ron hancock Volkswagen pasadena information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. Subject: known carbon buildup issue in 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan tsi – request for recall and accountability to whom it may concern, I am writing to formally express my concern and request action regarding a well-documented and dangerous issue affecting Volkswagen tsi engines—specifically, severe carbon buildup. I am the current owner of a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan tsi, which I purchased in April 2025 with approximately 84,000 miles on it. In June 2025, I had to have the intake manifold replaced due to carbon buildup—a repair that was still covered under warranty. However, shortly after, I was informed that the vehicle now requires a full engine decarb and replacement of all four fuel injectors, at a total cost of $3,296. This raises several serious concerns: •carbon buildup this severe at such low mileage is not typical wear and tear. It indicates a design flaw in the tsi direct-injection engine. •my extended warranty provider refuses to cover the repair, citing that it is a maintenance issue—conveniently shifting the responsibility away from the manufacturer. •this type of engine failure can result in dangerous performance issues, including: •sudden engine misfires •loss of power while accelerating •poor fuel economy •stalling or hesitation while merging or turning •catalytic converter damage •potential long-term engine failure I am stunned that this is not considered a safety issue worthy of recall, especially given the number of reports online and in service centers regarding this exact problem. The symptoms of carbon buildup can easily result in on-road danger to the driver and others. What’s most disheartening is that Volkswagen has long been aware of this flaw, yet no recall or extended warranty has been offered for affected consumers. I previously owned a 2015 passat and was a loyal vw owner—but now, as a single mother, I am expected to pay nearly $3,300 for a repair tied to poor engineering and design, not misuse or neglect.

I purchased the Tiguan just shy of 2 years ago. Since 12/17/24 I have spent over $2,000. 00 in that short of time because one incident the oil leaked out in a matter of a day. The second incident, while traveling from st. Louis to tulsa, the oil light came on every 80 miles because the oil had spewed out. I had to replace the oil about 5 times that day. The third incident came 1,500 miles later. I came out of a restaurant in claremore, ok and saw every drop of oil had spilled out into the parking lot. Each time I took the car to autohaus. They only work on Volkswagens. He has been doing so since he was 14. If he can't fix it, no one can. I can't afford to keep dishing out $700 every 2,000 miles.
I purchased Tiguan se on July 2, 2025 and 6 days later with about 200 miles on vehicle, check engine light appeared with message ‘fuel system error. ’ I was very disappointed that such a new vehicle reported an error on a critical system. Dealership had trouble identifying source of light and advice of vw technical advice was advised to replace entire fuel tank. This clearly sounds like a manufacture defect and I would like to know if other Tiguan owners have experienced similar issues. Given that vw has a history of defrauding consumers over diesel fuel systems, could this be another fuel problem. So far, upon contacting manufacturer they have brushed aside concerns stating it’s covered warranty and not acknowledging diminution of value that such an early defect could have on the resale/economic value of this car.
My 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan (purchased used) has a recurring and unsafe issue related to acceleration and the automatic start/stop feature. When accelerating from a stop or while maintaining slight pressure on the gas pedal, the vehicle lurches forward as if aggressively accelerating, even though my foot pressure has not changed. Additionally, when the start/stop feature re-engages after idling, the vehicle sometimes lunges forward despite my foot being firmly on the brake pedal. This behavior has occurred multiple times, creating near-miss situations that could have resulted in accidents. Service history: the issue was replicated by one Volkswagen technician during an overnight test drive but was not accurately reflected in the official service notes. A different technician (shop foreman) later claimed the concern could not be replicated and dismissed it as a “normal vehicle characteristic,” despite my report. The dealership performed a factory reset but the problem persists. Safety concern: this is a serious safety risk that poses a danger to myself, my passengers, and others on the road. I am especially concerned because my teenage daughter is about to begin driving this vehicle, and I do not feel it is safe for her. Manufacturer response: Volkswagen of America has declined my buyback request, stating that the situation “does not merit an offer. ” I strongly disagree, as the vehicle’s behavior is not normal or acceptable, and could result in unintended acceleration accidents. Request: I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether this issue is a defect in the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan and whether other vehicles may be experiencing the same unsafe condition.
My car has delayed acceleration issues of between 3 - 6 seconds. The last one that was 6 seconds ore more was on June 29. In addition it's happened several times. I took the vehicle in for its last service and was told the issue was my battery. Battery was replaced and issue not resolved. The service before that I was told it was a carbon build up. Continues to happen sporadically.

Coolant burst and started leaking. Unable to drive car. Radiator problem may be related to bad water pump. I see there was a recall.
At about 60,000 miles a vw dealer told me it was normal for vws to use oil. Now at 80,000 I have a $2,000+ bill b/c the pcv is faulty and the timing cover has failed. I did not get a low dngine oil warning, but mechanic says panic wait it was low ( oil change 4,000 miles ago). This could have led to a seized engine on the interstate. I am upset to learn this is a common problem with this vehicle. It is an expensive repair. From other posters I fear this is not the end of the problem. Vw should recall this part .
The oil separator in this vehicle failed resulting in other additional damages at 46,000 miles. I was not given the oil separator, upper timing cover, or lower oil pan for inspection. All maintenance in this vehicle was done timely and only touched by the vw dealer. The manufacturer warranty ended 17 days before the component failure. Vw agreed to pay half for the repairs that were quoted at 1600 dollars because the warranty expired by time so closely and was under on miles. The service advisor at the dealer reached out to vw about this on his own accord before updating me on the issue because he told me that this exact component has been happening very frequently with this model/year and didn’t think this should be happening at such low mileage. This component failure rapidly causes other serious damage resulting in very high repair bills on the vehicle. The check engine light came on over the weekend (6/7) and the car was brought to the dealer Tuesday (6/10) and was driven about 75 miles between the light coming on and the car being dropped at the dealer. The diagnosis quoting email from the dealer: “the vehicles oil separator failed and caused excess crankcase pressure to be put on the plastic components of the engine, mainly the upper timing cover and lower oil pan. That pressure causes the components to crack and leak oil, which is what happened” this resulted in a quoted 1600 dollars in repair. This is very concerning. I believe that an oil separator going bad at 46,000 miles in a perfectly maintained car as per recommendations of the dealer is unacceptable. I am reporting this in hopes that a recall from the manufacturer will be forced as this is unacceptable at such low mileage and the part needs to be replaced by another manufacturer with better quality.
Fuel gauge showed close to empty and we filled up the tank. The fuel gauge is still reading empty and not properly reporting the gas level in the tank.
Was driving on the freeway in my 2019 vw Tiguan when I experienced a sudden unexpected loss of power. Warning lights came on and the car went into a "limp mode" not allowing the engine to rev past a certain rpm. I took the car to be serviced at a local dealership where it was determined that the fuel injector harness was faulty and needed to be replaced. When I informed the dealer that there was an extended warranty on the harness (2018-2019 model years within 10 years/120 miles) and the part should be covered, the dealer and later vw of America said that my vehicle was not part of the warranty. Vw of America could not explain to my as why my car was not part of this warranty, but it is obviously a known problem on their end and they should honor what they advertised with their warranty extension with the NHTSA. Https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2023/mc-10235142-0001. Pdf I find vw of America's response to this problem completely unacceptable and quite dangerous. Their unwillingness to take care of this critical component with a known failure rate unnecessarily costs consumers for repairs that vw should be honoring according to their own posted warranty extensions and could potentially cost bodily damage and lives.
It appears that my Volkswagen Tiguan is experiencing an issue where the fuel nozzle shuts off prematurely during refueling, requiring multiple attempts to fill the tank completely. There have been no recalls on my vehicle, but it is getting to the point where I can barely fill my tank up due to prematurely shutting off. This has been an ongoing issue.

Seat belt light on. Car went into limp mode while on the highway. Seat belt acted like it was loose. Went for scan and it pulled up diagnostic code p0203 which is replace fuel injector wiring harness. Saying cylinder 3 circuit malfunction. Also threw code p050b.
First purchased this car from a dealership in 2023, used at128,051 miles. Did not have any problems with it in the first year I would say. Then suddenly while driving down the road the epc light would come on limiting my speed to 4,000 rpm. It would come on and off also causing my check engine light to come on and off. It has now become more frequent, the epc and check engine lights will come on and off creating a major hazard while driving. Got it scanned while the check engine light was on and it ran a code for a cylinder 4 engine misfire from my fuel injector wiring rail harness. It looks to be a common problem with this model but it’s showing my VIN is not attached to a recall.
Vw Tiguan lost significant acceleration while driving on the highway. Vehicle check engine light came on. Felt like vehicle was going to stall and decelerated to a below highway required speed. Vehicle was inspected by a vw authorized service center and . Verified gff found dtc's p0431, p04f0, p24d6, and p2101 were in fault mode. Significant oil leak also occurred. Failed component was crankcase pressure regulator and lower oil pan and gasket (due to increased pressure from failed pcv valve. ) this was of great concern as the deceleration was significant while on the highway which could cause potential life threatening accidents.
My engine shut off my battery as I was driving. This forced my car to stop in the middle of the road. There wasn’t a battery sign or engine light on until after the event. This could’ve caused a wreck, especially if it would’ve happened on the highway. I also have a problem with my gas not registering. It doesn’t show how much gas I have left in my tank. I have had other electrical issues, and problems when starting my car.
I bought my 2018 Tiguan in 2021 with 20k miles on it from york Volkswagen in york, PA. I'm at 83k miles. My vehicle sporadically stops accelerating, sputters and goes into "limp" mode. Ecp light comes on, engine error warning max rpm. Car stalls in heavy commuter highway traffic, with no shoulder to safely pull off the highway, which is terrifying and deadly. Also stalls/ hesitates in slower city traffic. Dealer initially suggested an early oil change ($130. 00) thinking this might resolve this issue. This is a well known and well documented, extremely dangerous issue. I wonder how many have been killed that we don't know about with the unexpected decelerating and unable to accelerate in speeding traffic. The dealer does not acknowledge this known issue. This has been happening for months. I glad I did some research.
I was on the freeway and my vehicle stopped accelerating and went into limp mode (almost died). I took it to the dealer and they said the codes for fuel injector harness were on and so I need a new fuel injector harness. Vw released an extended warranty for that but the dealer is saying the warranty is VIN specific and my vehicle does not qualify. How can it not qualify if its the exact problem listed on the extended warranty? number: vwp-23-03 (number for the warranty).
At 49,000 miles, all four spark plugs and ignition coils failed and had to be replaced due to engine stuttering and hesitation during acceleration. The check engine light first appeared as I approached a red light to make a timed left turn at a high-traffic intersection during rush hour. The malfunction caused my vehicle to struggle accelerating through the intersection, putting myself and others at risk. A certified mechanic confirmed the error code indicating faulty spark plugs and coils and replaced all components under warranty. However, the check engine light continued to reappear intermittently—sometimes turning off for a week after restarting the engine, other times staying on for extended periods. Despite the initial replacement, the same code concern persisted, and the mechanic replaced the components again under the parts and labor warranty. When the issue continued, I took my vehicle to my regular trusted mechanic, who performed a more in-depth diagnostic. They discovered an excessive and unusual amount of carbon buildup in the fuel injectors, which was likely triggering the engine code and causing drivability issues. This diagnosis resulted in an additional repair expense of nearly $700. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives, but the failed components are available for inspection upon request. These issues are unexpected given the vehicle's low mileage, age, and regular maintenance. Total repairs reached nearly $1,300. The hesitation posed a safety risk in traffic and suggests a possible premature system failure. My regular mechanic noted Volkswagen may claim this is “regular maintenance,” though this is not common in similar makes and models like the Tiguan.
Hit a small patch of black ice, not sure what happened but it caused the turbo to fully quite working creating a loss of power engine valve seals also were damaged possible over boost.
Oil leak from pvc malfunction causing stalling, over heating and a huge amount of oil consumption of vehicle. This poses a safety hazards for consumers who commute more than 25 miles to work , drs appts in rural areas etc. I have purchased well over $300usd in the last month on oil alone, taking away from house hold budgets and maintenance of said vehicle. The operant e of making home to our family's as consumer priority and this is a major risk.
