Volkswagen Touareg owners have reported 6 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Touareg based on all problems reported for the Touareg.
Gasoline leaking from the tank runs over the right-side exhaust tubes to the ground. The flow of the fuel leakage is very high at a drop-rate of more than one drop per second with the vehicle parked and the engine running at idle speed. Once the engine is turned off the leakage stops within short time. I got aware of the defect due to the strong gasoline smell after stopping and getting off the vehicle. I investigated and saw gasoline dropping to the ground between the rear wheels. The fact that the fuel is running over the exhaust tube made me ground the vehicle immediately for safety reasons. Although I need this vehicle I decided to keep it grounded due to the high risk that the gasoline gets ignited by the hot exhaust tube.

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Touareg. While driving various speeds, a fuel odor was noticed inside and outside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to brooklyn Volkswagen in brooklyn, new york where the washer/gasket was replaced due to leakage, but the failure recurred as the contact drove away. The dealer stated that the fuel tank was cleaned and the fuel odor would subside for a few days, but would recur. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v151000 (fuel system, gasoline), but the dealer stated that the recall was "pending". The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and provided the contact with case number: 170-879-370. The failure mileage was 109,000.

Underneath the car around the rear end, there is an obvious leaking of fuel ( usually observed after stopping and turning off car). The leaked fuel can form a small puddle. It will stop after a while. But judging from the situation this leak can become bigger and bigger, which could be very dangerous and is a fire hazard. I am not a specialist on cars, but since I am not a frequent driver and never drive cars to uneven sand roads, therefore the manufacture of the fuel tank itself and maybe its design is most possible for the cause of the this problem.

My 2009 vw Touareg tdi experienced a failure of the reductant pump for the diesel emission fluid system (def. ) researching failure rates of this system has shown a very high failures of this system in the vw Touareg and passat clean diesel application for model year 2009 and newer. Proposed solution to reduce crystallization and clogging of system has resulted in 3 service revisions, with the most recent calling for removal and replacement of the entire system (tank, pump, line and injector) at a cost of $1,5000. Vw will not cover any costs or issue a recall. This same system and parts are used in the Ford f350 and Chevrolet duramax clean diesel applications with similarly high failure rates to the best of my knowledge all light duty clean diesel manufacturers are experiencing a failure of this system with no recall or coverage against future failure. It is apparent that the supplier of the def system used in common light duty vehicles manufactured faulty parts on multiple vehicles. The manufacturers of these vehicles have records of the failure rates and can demonstrate that the system has been faulty, which results in non compliance of federal emissions standards. What steps can be taken to investigate this and provide a long term solution?.

The contact owns a 2005 Volkswagen Touareg. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the fuel gauge displayed an inaccurate reading. In addition, the fuel tank leaked gasoline continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis, who recommended that the vehicle be inspected by an authorized dealer. The vehicle was not inspected by an authorized dealer nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 141,323.
