1 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 07/27/2018

The car has problems starting and takes a few tries before starting up. Have also had a problem where the car was in park with the parking brake engaged and the car was revving on its own. There have also been problems while the car has been slowing down on the freeway, specifically when the brakes are being engaged the car will attempt to move forward as though it is trying to push pass the fact that the brakes are being engaged. As well as the car will accelerate faster than the gas pedal is being pushed e. G when the gas pedal is slightly pushed the car will accelerate quickly as though the gas pedal was being pushed upon firmly.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 04/13/2012

It was close to 9pm. I had exited the freeway to stop in a parking lot to check directions. I had been driving for about an hour, so I got out to walk around and buy a cup of coffee. I came back a few minutes later and drove out of the lot. The on ramp was about 200 yards away and there was a red light at the intersection, so I was only moving at around 20mph. I was the only car in my lane, so about 100 feet away from the intersection I pressed down on my brake pedal, but the for some reason it the car kept rolling. I tried again, but the brakes were no help as I kept rolling. Frantically, I stomped hard, floored the brakes, and my car started to slow down a little, but that time it was too late. I tried to turn to the right to avoid the flow of traffic, but an instant later I had hit an oncoming car. I don't know what went wrong. I am pretty good at maintaining the car and it had been serviced at the Volvo dealer fairly recently. It's only garaged about half the time, but I live in southern California so it's never been exposed to an extreme climate or anything. There was a thunderstorm that morning, and the roads were very wet earlier in the day, but the storm broke around noon: 7 or 8 hours before I left home that night. By that time all of the roads had dried.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 02/20/2012

I purchased a Volvo for their reputation on safety. So why does our Volvo have an acceleration problem? I could be at a stop light and the car revs up to 2000 rpm's and starts to go with my foot on the brake with me almost hitting the car in front of me then when we first start up the car the brakes don't work? the car still rolls. What's going on with Volvo their making me think their just as bad as Toyota!.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

I am writing to officially inform you of a problem that continues to need to be replaced on my 2004 S40. I have owed the car since 2006 and am about to bring it in for the forth (4) time to have the hydraulic brake valve pump and hoses replaced. Only this time it is not under warranty because I have 65k miles on the car. So I have to pay for this unwillingly. The brakes lock and the car continues to slide. I have had one Mini-fender bender due to this issue, but my insurance won't acknowledge that it was because of the car. Since I have experienced this so many times, I know when the problem arises.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 02/06/2009

The event leading up to the failure is simply a defective part after some usage due to a poor welding job at manufacture. Volvo has only recalled one vehicle to my knowledge but they needed to recall all vehicles during that year. The failure is the car has a hard time stopping when the brakes are applied the care continues to move and rough engine idle. The parts that were replaced were the vacuum pump and valve at brake booster, hoses, lines and fittings. Repair cost $840. The air bag light has continued to come on/off since the purchase of the car. It is defective. The drivers side sips bag needs replacing total cost $801.

The tires and other equipment were damaged by the flames. The vehicle is currently being diagnosed by the dealer. The failure and current mileages were 65,000.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

After letting the vehicle sit over night. . . When starting the vehicle in the morning there is no brake pressure after a half mile of driving. This happens everyday and this is a common problem with Volvos. This problem could result in very serious problems and maybe even fatal to other Volvo owners who are not aware of this common problem. . . . . . I do know that on the Volvo S40 2000 model this was a recall and it should also be on the Volvo S40 2005 model.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

I have a 2001 Volvo S40 with brake problems. In the mornings when I get in my car and back up I have to almost stand up on the brakes to stop my car. I have almost went out in front of others cars because my brakes will not hardly stop. This occurs daily. If my car sits for a few hours it does it all over again. This to me is a safty issue because one day they are not going to stop and I'll have a wreck. I have two small children in my car. I thought Volvo was suppose to be one of the safest carss one the road but someone didn't do enough research. I have bumped my husbands truck twice because of this problem. And I have also had to use the e-brake to stop more than once. Some one needs to be held responsible for this problem. My car only has 110,000 miles one it. I had a 1993 Volvo 850 before this one and it had 207,000 miles on it when it was wrecked and I never had any problems with it.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Volvo S40

Problem with brakes on 2006 Volvo S40 t5. Severe screaching noise comes from brakes when in reverse. Volvo is aware of the problem yet they have not been able to resolve the issue. My Volvo S40 has had brake parts replaced 4 times. Each time I was told the problem was fixed. One month later, the noise is back. The noise is now back for the fifth (5) time.

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

Bought a new 2000 Volvo S40 in April of 2000. The car now has 60,000 miles on it. . . . Light driving by most standards. At 18,000 miles rear brakes and rotors were replaced at a cost of more than $400. Front and rear brakes have been replaced another time since then. On 9/21/05, I have now also had to replace the alternator at a cost of $600. This car only has 60,000 miles on it. I have read a lot of other discussions online from other 2000 Volvo S40 owners who also complain about the car running through brakes every 15-20,000 miles.
