1 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/01/2025

The “tire pressure system” warning appeared and has not turned off. New tpms sensors were installed but the dealership could not get the car to calibrate despite multiple attempts. It has come to my attention that other models of Volvo have this same trouble, and a software update is required.

2 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/20/2025

The check engine light appeared on my 2018 Volvo S60. After taking the car to 2 independent mechanics and the dealer, it was diagnosed as an engine control module (ecm) failure. My 2018 Volvo S60 has only 44,200 miles. The dealer stated that they "haven't seen this failure in cars with such low mileage. Usually, cars have 125,000+ miles if/when the ecm fails". The dealer and an independent mechanic both stated that the brakes, steering, starter, thermostat, etc. , could fail at any time. This could put my family, and other families on the road, at risk. Volvo refused to pay for the repairs.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2024 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/02/2025

Urgent safety concern: intermittent total loss of all vehicle audio alerts this issue has occurred multiple times and poses a serious safety concern. While driving, the vehicle intermittently experiences a complete loss of all audio output. This includes: •turn signal indicators •hazard warning sounds •blind spot monitoring alerts •park distance control tones •navigation guidance •audio system playback (music, radio, etc. ) •all other safety-related audio warnings and notifications the vehicle becomes completely silent, eliminating essential auditory cues that are critical for safe operation. Temporary workaround (while driving): the only way to restore functionality is by performing a forced reboot of the infotainment system. This requires the driver to press and hold the home button until the system power cycles—a distracting and unsafe action that must be done while the vehicle is in motion. Please note that while rebooting does not disable the vehicle’s ability to drive, it temporarily resets multiple core systems, including the climate control and infotainment interface. This creates a significant distraction and impairs the driver’s ability to safely monitor vehicle status and surroundings. This malfunction poses a significant safety risk and must be investigated immediately.

4 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/06/2025

The dim (driver instrument module) flickers intermittently and I have no idea when it's going to go out completely. It actually does go out and there's a solid white panel or colored lines, but it comes back in. This displays the speedometer & fuel. This is a safety issue. I would hate for this to go completely out while I am driving. I do not know the cause for the malfunction. However, per the Volvo tech; they're aware this is a reoccurring issue.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/03/2024

The indirect measurement tpms system of this car has misdetected low tire pressure on three occasions. Most recently, on October 3 while driving on the freeway at about 70 mph the tpms alert illuminated. I checked the information screen and the display showed low pressure in all four tires. Because I have had misdetection of the right front tire twice before, and that it seemed very unlikely that all four tires would deflate at the same time, I disregarded the alert as a false detection. Later I checked the air pressure in all four tires and found it to be exactly correct. In an earlier episode, as I mentioned the tpms alerted that the right front tire was low. In this instance, I did not have a history of false detections, so I believed the information to be accurate and immediately exited the freeway and returned home where I had a (very accurate) tire pressure gauge. Of course, the pressure was correct in all tires. I then followed the Volvo recalibration procedure and this completed successfully until later that day when the same tire alerted to low pressure again. I rechecked, again pressure was correct, and re-ran the calibration procedure. I did not have any other false detection again until about a year later when the October 3 incident occurred. The car has had at least one “total system update” to the software to address other issues since the first false detection incident, possibly two (not sure). The problem I am having with this is that Volvo apparently decided to change from direct sensor measurement to indirect wheel speed measurement around 2019 or 2020 as a cost saving measure. That is fine, but the indirect measurement system they are using is causing so many false alarms that now the first thing I think when I see an alert is that it is not a real problem. This is not a good situation. Volvo forums are full of complaints by other owners of similar false alarms. Volvo should fix this problem through software or restore direct measurement.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Main center display becomes blank at random times. Sometimes this is accompanied by a loud squealing sound from car audio. When display blanks, all hvac functions stop including defog, also all audio including turn signal indication sound. Sometimes display and functions self recover after approximately 15-20 seconds, sometimes it does not self recover and in these cases the ignition needs to be turned off and the drivers door opened to "turn off" the vehicle systems so that they can restart. The condition is completely random. The condition has been noted by other 2022+ Volvo owners in various forums. The software in my car has been updated following a complaint for this concern, however it has occurred again since the update. Date provided in report details is most recent event.

7 Electrical System problem of the 2024 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/12/2023

While driving on the interstate 5 in seattle, wa this Volvo rental car from national had the multi-media screen went blank. No tell-tales nor instrument readings. The 360 camera and reverse camera systems worked as not part of the android system. The infotainment system encountered a problem with an android system with data corrupt. Had to reset factory data reset. Given this is a non-compliance to fmvss controls and displays per standard 101, I feel obligated to report this concern for driver safety around compatability of the android system used by Volvo.

8 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/06/2023

On June 2, 2023 I went to start my car and the engine would not turn over. The dashboard displayed a number of warning lights and messages (dstc service required, srs airbag service urgent, transmission service required, coolant system service required). When the tow truck driver arrived later that day, they tried to jumpstart my car but reported the battery was completely dead. I had the car taken to a local shop that specialized in Volvo cars. A few days later the shop called to tell me that not only was the battery dead, but my car key was no longer responding, and that the engine control module "exploded. " none of the mechanics at the shop had seen such a thing before. The shop also told me that they could not figure out what had been draining the battery. I was advised to reach out to the dealership. I did and happened to meet with the general manager and a lead technician who happened to be on site. I was told that while rare, the engine control module can "explode. " I was willing to drop the matter until I started seeing "low battery" warnings in early sept. Of 2023. I was finally able to get the car into the dealership on 1/2/24. After talking with the mechanic, he suggested that the satellite radio in my car was continuously draining my battery and to resolve the problem all they would need to do is download new software. A few hours later the mechanic confirmed that my car needed an rdar upgrade to stop the battery drainage. I do not understand how the dealership could sell me the car without checking to make sure the software had been upgraded in the first place. Rdar failure is not something that pops up as a recall or major safety concern. If the car had lost power while in motion, there could have been serious consequences.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

The engine oil pressure sensor is not activated in my 2014 Volvo S60 software, also combined with what I found out was a known issue of excessive oil. My car engine oil pressure got too low, and there was no warning displayed in the driver information module (dim). The car started stalling while driving and I almost had a crash. I found out there was a recall on the 2012 Volvo S60 but there was none on my 2014 which had the same issue. I have since taking the car to the dealership and not only did I almost lose my life in a crash I was also told the engine was permanently damaged. I have reported the case to Volvo they need to expand the years the recall was on and also need to fix my engine which was due to manufacturers defect.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/17/2023

Excessive oil consumption resulting in piston damage/failure! this vehicle has burned oil since I bought it used at about 80,000 miles. I checked the carfax prior to purchasing it and it had been maintained routinely. I have to add a liter of oil every couple of weeks. This is with regular in town driving. I have reported the issue numerous times to the Volvo dealer when I bring it in for regular maintenance and repairs. I have been told by the Volvo service advisor to just add oil. It was a known issue. Sometimes I have warning lights telling me it has low oil. I also check the oil level to know to add oil. I always check my oil level before any trip. I always keep oil in my car because of this issue. Otherwise, I have had to stop and buy oil once on a trip. Since it told me to add oil on my way back. However, one serious safety issue was having to pull off on a desert highway to add oil. The car was giving me a red warning triangle that I had never seen before. My child had to shine a light for me to see so I could add oil. She was very afraid. Although Volvo sent a letter acknowledging this vehicle problem, I have been told that I do not qualify for any warranty. I was told by Volvo service that I have a misfire/loss in power and over $5000 in repairs in Feb 2023. I have already paid for some related repairs when my check engine light came on last year. My check engine light is currently on. In the last year alone (prior to Feb 2023), I have spent over $5000 in repairs. I would have traded it in, but I kept being told how great of a car it was by the service advisor. I am sick! I do not want to continue wasting money on a car that I no longer feel safe in. I am afraid to drive it out of town.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/24/2022

On December 24, I was about a quarter mile into my drive when the car shut off. The dashboard went blank and I had to coast to a stop. I was unable to restart or use any parts of my car except for the emergency blinker. Nothing alerted me on my dashboard prior to this incident. I could not use the sos alert button in the car. I had a half tank of gas. I had to wait in the 9 degreef cold for 2 hours before it could be towed to the service center. My speed was approximately 25mph on a local road and I don't know what would have happened if this occurred at any higher speed with more traffic. Prior to this on 11/15/22, I had another incident with this car. I could not open the doors with the key fob and then I could not start the car. A battery jump was attempted by the tow service and it did not work. The car was towed to hudson valley Volvo service center where they completed software control module downloading, electrical equipment trouble shooting etc. , for 3 days and I was able to drive it again. Unfortunately, I do not feel safe driving this car.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/29/2022

The alternator seized on the highway snapping the serpentine belt which got sucked into the timing and stopped the car in the left lane at highway speed. The timing guard failed allowing the belt to damage the timing. Volvo says it needs a head job I have possession of the vehicle and all maintenance records. Cars behind me dodged onto the shoulder to avoid hitting me. There was no warning. Furthermore this is a known problem a quick search of Volvo forums turned up over a dozen cars with insufficient timing guards.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/25/2022

I was driving down our main road and I saw and smelled smoke coming out of the air vents, then a warning light came on my dashboard for my 12v battery I pulled over right away and opened the trunk and saw fire on the left-hand side. I attempted to extinguish the fire myself using soda, I was pulling clothing (2 shirts and napkins) out of the car and burned my hand we towed the car to Volvo and they are claiming it’s not their fault we have only had the car for 4 months and my husband could have died or worse if my child was in the back seat!.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volvo S60

17 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/30/2022

Power steering brakes battery adas.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/11/2022

My wife and I were driving to bwi airport for a 10:30am flight from virginia beach in the express lane on I-95n going 75mph when all of a sudden at 8:30am the engine seized and I got a message telling me I would experience "reduced engine performance" as my car puttered to a stop with white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Prior to this message I had no warnings or messages on my dashboard. I got out of my car to check my oil and it was completely evaporated, so I called aaa. While we are 1 hour into waiting (it is now 9:30am) on the narrow shoulder of two express lanes for a tow truck to take our car to a shop at 11:40am and for a lyft driver to figure out how to get to us, two vdot employees told us we had to move our car by 11am otherwise the state police will tow us. I managed to call a local tow company who finally arrived by 10:55am, so we had been stranded in an express lane watching cars fly by at 85mph for almost 2 and a half hours before we were able to move. After the first shop took a look and told me the engine was damaged and that they couldn't replace it, I had it towed to a Volvo dealership. 5 days and a $375 diagnostic later, they find that the turbocharger has an internal oil leak and that this and the catalytic converter would have to be replaced for $6k. Aside from now being carless 4 hours from the dealership and missing my wife's birthday celebration without refund, I now have a $6,375 bill that I had no way of preventing due to a manufacturing design flaw in 2012 Volvo S60 t5. I should have been warned of a low oil situation so I could have at least pulled over and properly tended to it. I should not have to be liable for a Volvo design flaw that may involve faulty piston rings that has apparently affected countless others. This incident put both my wife and I in danger on an express lane on a very busy highway. Volvo needs to be accountable for this design flaw.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/07/2022

New 2022 Volvo S60 began shutting off while driving on highways and interstates and in once within feet of railroad crossing. Also occurrences of car being unable to turn off even after several attempts. Problem arose 2/2022. In all instances traffic, including 18 wheelers, was approaching behind at highway and interstate speeds up to 70mph. Sometimes a warning lamp would appear saying vehicle is shut off/ powering down, or place vehicle in park vehicle shutting off. Other warning lamps would come on like parking assist currently not available or park/brake needs service. Volvo dealer that initiated repairs determined the mid voltage battery module was faulty and they replaced the mvbm and dead battery. And was causing the error messages that they too were able to reproduce. Car’s new battery completely drain in may but had not been driven for at least two weeks was towed to Volvo dealership which replaced battery. Days after car was returned the vehicle began stopping in the middle of interstates/highways and near railroad crossings again with same messages and was towed back to dealer, who this time said something was spilled on the center console (which is right next to the cup holder) so they say it is an external problem and they aren’t responsible for the failure and state that they can fix but can’t guarantee problem won’t mysteriously arise again. There was never a spill in vehicle. Additionally the pilot assist for the adaptive cruise control shuts off with no visual or auditory warning when sensors can’t read road markings. The vehicle has almost veered completely off the road and in two instances the beginning of bridges. No word from Volvo on problem when mentioned along with other safety incidents. I was traveling at 35mph during city instances and the interstate and highway speed limits during those occurrences and the same when adaptive cruise control pilot assist malfunctioned.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/19/2021

Car has had regular oil changes and was well below the recommended time for the next change when the engine began knocking in September. I took the car for inspection at a Volvo mechanic repair shop and was told all of the oil was gone and engine is damaged beyond repair. No engine or oil indicator light came on to warn me that the oil was low. I understand the 2011-2012 models were recalled for this issue and apparently the problem continued to the 2013 model. The car has low mileage and I am shocked that it is now effectively totaled. I am now without a vehicle and feel that Volvo should have to correct the situation and that a recall should be issued.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/20/2021

I turned the car on and got an error message that said the turn indicator system failed. After trying to clear the message from the dash using the button on the steering wheel, I discovered that nothing on the steering wheel was working, including the windshield wipers or any buttons on the steering wheel. I called the manufacturer and they told me not to drive it and they towed it to the dealer. The dealer said they had see this before as either a software issue or electrical issue and would need to replace the stalks and buttons.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/10/2021

When I first bought this Volvo there was condensation in both of the headlights then took it for a test drive and I really liked it and when I got back the dealer said if I was to buy it he would take care of both headlights so I assumed that he did but I bought it and left and was driving and then a code came on in the car saying low beam out I was like OH shit so took it back to them they had me go buy $120 light bulb and that wasn't the problem they did some working and testing and said that it was the low beam ballast so I bought 1 for the drivers side and that fixed that problem but then not even a week later the same light came on saying low beam out, took it back and they said that it was the same thing on opposite side on passenger side so they said order the part and we'll fix it I did that took it back to them and they said it was fixed not even a day later and the light was back on swing low beam out I'm thinking that there is an issue that has to deal with some kind of recall with these lights cause there is no way that they should break that easy or quick so please get back to me and let me kno thank you.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/19/2021

While I was going down a small side street that is a hill, the air conditioning system suddenly went off and immediately the entire car's mechanisms ceased. The engine stopped and the car was unstearable and the brakes were not working. I had my foot on the brake and that was not responsive, the car slid with all electrical systems not working and the brake not holding the car or stopping the movement of the car. I could not start the car to get the engine going. I could not stop nor start the car that slid into a major street that is a thoroughfare for a hospital. I had no control of the car at all. I attempted at least 7 times to start the Volvo that requires keeping your foot on the brake and turning a small switch that is located right next to the cup holder. Nothing would work. I called Volvo on call who instead of immediately helping told me to call 911 since the car slid into the middle of the major street and it was an emergency regarding my safetly . A police officer came after a few minutes and blocked the traffic. Meanwhile, I was suddenly able by the 9 or 10th time to start the car and move it to the side of the road. The police officer drove in back of me literally a block away from where the Volvo dealer just happened to be located. There were no warning messages prior to the car ceasing. The car is now in the Volvo dealership who upon receiving it said that I must have gotten the ignition switch wet. This is totally false. I did not have any liquids nor should that be a reason why a car suddenly stops and becomes a piece of metal in the middle of the road. What's worse was that there is no emergency brake on this model. My life was in danger and I am lucky that I was not hit. A passenger got out of her car and stood next to mine in the middle of the road with oncoming traffic coming at my driver's side. Volvo dealership is claiming it's the starter switch and it must have shorted. There is a defect and safety problem requiring investigating.

24 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/01/2021

My 2020 S60 t5 r-design had 3 broken sensors, a safety recall, malfunctioning brakes which caused the car to veer, and most recently a leaking a/c hose. All problems from the factory (out of thin air) within the first 12 months of my lease. After numerous complaints to Volvo car USA, I was offered a generic and dismissive answer that Volvo is not in the position to offer a trade assist or any help. No explanation to a loyal Volvo customer. They're simply sorry that I had to take off work to service their car and was told to uber home (no courtesy loaner). After the most recent service visit, I demanded Volvo either replace the car or terminate the lease, but the agent thought servicing the vehicle 5 times (because parts were breaking) was absolutely normal. She was stunned I do not have a positive attitude now that my car was fixed. I demanded contact to the regional manager, but my agent (who turned out to be supervisor) refused to forward any information. My car would go through a review process with special parameters, but the supervisor of the headquarters of Volvo cars USA was incapable of answering what the parameters were, when this review would take place, or who is reviewing my case nothing was transparent, and for all I know, this review could have been arbitrary. As expected, Volvo is not in the position Volvo sent an automated customer satisfaction survey, to which I provided feedback of my awful experience. Sadly, the same agent handling my case responded thank you and that was it. I guess my feedback and problems caused by Volvo do not really interest Volvo? so by Volvo parameters, a car breaking 5 times is normal, there is no quality control of their cars, and customer service is inexistent (3 or 4 professionals in headquarters serving north America is inexistent).

25 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Sirius radio module failure cause control and display of back up camera, navigation, hands free phone, and radio to stop working.

26 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/11/2020

Parking break can become temporarily unavailable and when this happens the information center does not relay any other information when the auto is running! gps, tire pressure, etc low gas, etc information is voided. Three times car had to be repair, apparently water, coffee etc can get into the switch as the switch is located next to the cup holders between the seats. Bad location or poor design of the switch? serious "because running information" is voided on dash!. First repair was free, second time the repair was to cost $500. Third time (at a different dealership)repair was no cost ("coffee or other may have gotten into the switch" one mechanic not related to Volvo suggested that they simply disconnect the battery, wait and reconnect so that the computer system is voided for a few minutes. Vehicle was in motion on city and highway when problem occured. . .

2016 Volvo S60 audio module had to be replaced because it completely stopped working. This controls the navigation system, telephone, radio, car options, audio for safety alerts, etc. Stop working as I was driving on a city street. Also drained battery and I had to replace the battery too.

30 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/22/2020

While driving, computer screens all went black and engine shut down. If it had happened 1 mile prior, would have been going 50-55 on a curvy two lane road and would have resulted in serious injury or death. Towed to dealer awaiting results.

31 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Vehicle was stationary when I did notice the driver's side does not lock properly (car does not beep when locking as usual). In order for the door to lock properly, the driver's door needs to be closed much harder than usual, technically slammed shut. In order to open the driver's side of the door, I need to either use the manual key or enter through the passenger door, propping open the door that way. This is causing a safety/security concern, as I need the vehicle to be locked at all times.

32 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 11/12/2019

The trunk would not open with the key fob. Another time, the car driver door would not lock. When the driver door was opened, the car alarm would go off. The dealer replaced the locking mechanism.

33 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/19/2019

My car doesn't notify me that the engine oil is low. Last year, I drove all the way to mississippi without it warning that the oil was lo with barely any oil on the dip stick. We stopped to check it when we got gas and that is how we knew. It has been low several times this year without notifying me. I have to constantly check the oil to ensure there is enough in there. It does not have an oil leak as there is no oil on the concrete. I have checked with the Volvo dealership and was told there was no recall for my car in reference to low oil but there should be. I could have blown my engine.

Tl- the contact leased a 2019 Volvo S60 t6. The contact stated that upon leasing the vehicle, the lane keep assist, a feature that automatically corrects the driver's steering when drifting at a high rate of speed. The contact stated that when he tested the feature, the feature only worked, according to him, 10% of the time. Another feature on this vehicle was the collision avoidance feature where the vehicle will make an abrupt stop if it senses any obstruction while in motion. The contact stated that this feature failed to operate as needed when it was tested. The contact also stated that while driving at 15 mph, the vehicle made an abrupt stop on a wide open road, no objects were in the contact's view when the occurrence happened. The contact stated that a warning light flashed as the vehicle made the abrupt stop. After the contact experienced these failures, the contact notified the manufacturer of the failures. 35 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

The sensus/navigation system is plagued with bugs. Frequently my bluetooth fails to connect, audio randomly stops working for all satnav/radio functions, sometimes the screen fails to load up at all. All seems to happen completely randomly. Some days radio functions great but some days I can not listen to any audio at all. Some days my phone connects to bluetooth without me even trying to connect, and some days the satnav radio does not connect at all. I have even gone as far as to reset all network settings on my iphone and remove the iphone from the recent device list; still the phone will not connect to the car. The only thing I have ever seen fix this problem is to stop the car, get out of the vehicle, walk more than 20ft away from the car, lock the car, and wait a few minutes; unlock, enter and start vehicle; and suddenly it works again.
