Noticed bare wires inside headlight assembly, both sides, when changing bulb. Wrapped wires until I could find a wiring harness. Low beam was worse than high beam. Checked with Volvo, tallahassee, FL and they stated there were no recalls concerning headlight (or switch). Recently bought two new wiring harnesses and installed but noticed they were also not correctly insulated (plastic) just like the old ones (16 gage wire with plastic, vs silicon high temp insulation. ) also, on inspection, noticed the same harness on my other Volvo, a 2002 Volvo, had been upgraded to heavy duty wiring with silicon based insulation. Dangerous! bare wires could have shorted out headlights at night!
have old harness and pictures. Can send/email as required.

The contact stated prior to purchasing the vehicle there was NHTSA recall campaign 00v405000 concerning the turn signal. The recall repair work was completed and the vehicle worked properly. Then, she received recall 04v504000 concerning the headlight switch. The vehicle was taken to dealer for the repairs. When she got the vehicle home she tried to turn the headlights on and noticed they did not work. She took the vehicle back to the dealership, and they repaired the headlights. The headlights failed again five days later. The dealership determined that the turn signal switch needed to be replaced in order to fix the headlights. She contacted the manufacturer, and they agreed with the dealership. They stated none of the recalls included the turn signal switch, and she would have to pay for the repairs. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact felt the headlight failure was related to one of the two previous recalls.

While driving the headlights fail to function. The dealership indicated that there was a failure in the headlight switch. There was a recall on this issue 99v235000 but it was for earlier model years.
On 1999 Volvo S70, headlights spontaneously went off while driving at night. Problem is defective headlight switch, which was recalled on the 1998 and earlier Volvo S70s (and model 850s). Recall has not been issued for 1999 and later, but failure is identical to the 1998 and earlier models that were recalled.
While driving 25 mph, the headlights went out. The dealer determined that the headlight switch needed to be replaced. Please provide further details.

While driving at night, I had the headlights switched on. The interior dashboard lights were lit and no warning lights were on. As I drove into a less lighted area, I noticed that my headlights were in fact not lit. I confirmed that the switch was on, which they were. I confirmed that no warning lights were on. Later, I had the headlight switch replaced, which fixed this problem. Very dangerous problem. My Volvo mechanic told me that a defective headlight switch was a common problem. I told him that there was a recall for the 1998 Volvo S70, but not the 1999 Volvo S70, for this problem. He was amazed because he said that both cars use the same switch.
Volvo customer relations VIN yv1ls5530w3445749, 1998 S70 sir or madam my wife and I purchased a pre-owned 1998 Volvo S70 in 2000. Two nights ago as we were driving on a 30-mile rural-stretch home, our headlight switch began to malfunction. With the switch in the on position, the dashboard lights were off and the headlights and taillights would intermittently go out. We pulled off the road and discovered that by pushing the switch inward toward the dash, the dashboard lights, headlights and taillights would stay lit, so long as you were constantly pushing in the switch. Yesterday I searched the internet and discovered that this is a problem that has been addressed by NHTSA recall no. 99v235/Volvo recall no. 94. I immediately started making phone calls to get this part replaced. Volvo of lisle retrieved my cars information and informed me that the switch had already been replaced under the recall on 051799, prior to our purchase of the vehicle. They also informed me that because the original switch had already been replaced according to their records, I would be required to pay for the repair. The recall on the switch was issued by the NHTSA because the problem put the driver at risk of having an accident. Obviously, the problem still exists, and to my dismay I am forced to pay for it. I feel that Volvo is always responsible for fixing the design, regardless of how many times the part under recall breaks. I expect the NHTSA to investigate this issue, as I am sending them a copy of this letter. I kept the broken switch and I would like a name and address in your warranty department to send it to. I expect to be refunded the costs I incurred for this repair, as well as receiving a new switch installed free of charge, once this problem is fixed. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Nhtsa.
99 v 235 000/headlight switch: consumer states that the head lights went out while driving at night. A recall is on this make & model, but the dealer and the manufacturer informed that the vehicle VIN# was not cover under that recall. Nlm.
Headlights will go out while consumer is driving, and the only way to keep headlights on is to hold switch in the on position. Contacted dealer.
Repeated failure of headlamps, selector switch (lights go out), and turn signal. I need to continuously apply pressure to the selector switch in order to keep the lights on - this makes driving unsafe.
Electrical problems since shortly after purchase of vehicle, to dealer 25 times. Dashboard light would come on, indicating that headlights were not working when in fact they were. Gas light comes on even when tank is full. Washer fluid inidcator illuminated, washer jets inoperable, wiper blads replaced, right side mirror did not adjust all the way out. Front and rear brake pads worn, rotors replaced, brakes cause screeching noises. Engine light illuminated, cable under engine loose.
