The contact stated prior to purchasing the vehicle there was NHTSA recall campaign 00v405000 concerning the turn signal. The recall repair work was completed and the vehicle worked properly. Then, she received recall 04v504000 concerning the headlight switch. The vehicle was taken to dealer for the repairs. When she got the vehicle home she tried to turn the headlights on and noticed they did not work. She took the vehicle back to the dealership, and they repaired the headlights. The headlights failed again five days later. The dealership determined that the turn signal switch needed to be replaced in order to fix the headlights. She contacted the manufacturer, and they agreed with the dealership. They stated none of the recalls included the turn signal switch, and she would have to pay for the repairs. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact felt the headlight failure was related to one of the two previous recalls.

1999 Volvo S70 - continued rear brake, running light, and turn signal problems. I participated in the original recall campaign (00v405000) to replace the rear turn signal sockets and bulbs. To this day I continue to have problems with the rear turn signals, running lights, and brake lights. I frequently have problems with all of the rear lighting (brake, running, and turn signals). Recently, I found both rear turn signal and both rear brake lights were not functioning. I had to bang on the light housings to get the bulbs to make good contact with the sockets. The only relief I have found is to replace all rear bulbs every 3 months. Even then, I frequently have multiple bulb failures.
Consumer received recall notification 101a he states work was completed, but still having intermittent turn signal problems.

Right turn signal bulb was replaced. June 2000, both headlights burnt out. July 2000, defective right turn signal, all possibly due to a problem with the bulb/sockets of the lighting system.
There have been repeated failures of light bulbs (turn signal, brake lights, headlights, etc. )-- 12 documented from dealer, another 4-6 not documented because fixed "informally" . The dealer claims the failures are due to cheap halogen bulbs now used by Volvo rather than an electrical system problem. I notice that many of the complaints filed on this make/model involve similar problems. Whether the electrical system or the bulbs are at fault, this is a significant safety problem.

1. 12/23/car died in slow freeway traffic; restarted after 5 minutes, but "check engine light" stayed on. Diagnosed as problem with air mass sensor, which was replaced. 2. 11/11/right rear door lock failed; motor replaced. 3. Each of front headlight bulbs burned out with less than 15k in mileage. 4. 1/13/rt and lt outer tail lights burned out; bulbs were replaced. 5. 3/3/right turn signal began flashing too quickly; both rt and lt turn signal sockets were replaced. 6. 4/28/tailights again failed, sockets and bulbs were replaced; 7. 4/29/left turn signal flashing too quickly (even though socket had been previously replaced on 3/3/99 to deal with anticipated corrusion problem). My wife and I have have had more service problems with this car than in 25 years of owning all of our other cars combined.
Prior to recall notification, consumer experienced problems with defective bulbs, front and rear and is now requesting reimbursement, since the manufacturer is now reconizing the problam as a defect.
