Takata recall- the vehicle become non responsive when pushing the accelerator, the engine started running rough, the cruise control stopped working, the dstc (dynamic stability traction control) failed and the engine coolant temperature stopped reading. The vehicle started stalling everytime I come to a stop. All this started at the same time while I was driving the vehicle.

I just purchased a used 99 Volvo, I am a mom of 4 and had heard Volvo to be very safe reliable car. The car ran great for about 2 days, then the lights started coming on, engine system service required, and the vehicle would also stall for no reason. I took it to local Volvo dealer, they say there was a recall on the message board, but if the light came on again it would need a new throttle module, cost of 1100. I left and came home and did some research, I have since found that the etm has been recalled on that year vehicle and they extended the warranty to 200,000 miles. I am very disappointed in the dealership that they would not inform me first hand and try to charge me. I have since contacted Volvo llc and am awaiting a response. I have also learned that the stalling is considered "limp home mode", which is suppose to be a safety feature, however I did not feel safe when the vehicle did it today driving on i285, in the center lane at 65 mph with my 2 year old in the car. After that experience I do not think I would ever recommend a Volvo to anyone.

My 2004 Volvo S80 has stalled dozens of times over the past 2 1/3 years. Sometimes it stalls while coasting to a stop. It will generally restart and you can limp home. This is a severe inconvenience, but not a major safety issue. However, it also has lost power and sputtered along at a very low speed while driving on the highway. This is a serious safety issue. My wife and daughter refuse to drive the car on the highway due to this problem. The car has been taken to a Volvo dealer 6 times since may 2007 for this problem. Many times the problems was mis-diagnosed by the dealer and an expensive repair was performed which did not solve the problem. In may 2007, the car was given a tuneup and software upgrade to throttle control module. In June 2007, the electronic control module (ecm) was replaced. My total cost was $1,165 while the dealer supplied the ecm part as a goodwill gesture. Same problem in may 2008. Dealer replaced terminal ends in wiring on ecm at a cost of $215. Same problem in sept 2008. Dealer replaced the mass air flow sensor for $525. Same problem in Dec 2008. Dealer replaced wiring from ecm to throttle actuator and covered the cost as a goodwill gesture. Same problem in July 2009. Dealer replaced the ecm at a cost $500; part was covered as a goodwill gesture. This appears to be the exact same problem covered by NHTSA action number pe05041 for 1999 to 2001 model years. In that case, Volvo extended the warranty to 10 years and 200,000 miles for the ecm. That appears to be an appropriate remedy for 2004 model years as well.

The contact owns a 2004 Volvo S80. The throttle assembly needed to be replaced and the dealer stated that the contact would be responsible for paying $350. 00. The hose was installed; however, the problem recurred. The contact also paid $4,200 for repairs that didnt remedy the failure. The dealer also stated the throttle assembly is not realted to the recall. The failure mileage was 67,000.
2000 S80 Volvo electronic throttle body, car stalling of the freeway with children in car. Volvo malufactor defected part and they continue to charge their customer for parts and maintenance of this defected part.
2001 Volvo S80 t6. Vehicle stalls without warning when accelerator is released and vehicle returns to idle. Problem was fixed once but has returned. Dealer & Volvo n. A. Say that since there is no computer code for the stall and they can't duplicate it there is no cure. Vehicle has stalled on numerous occasions during the last 5 months including 12/17/2006 in heavy traffic the hov lane on the long island expressway. Has also stalled in high speed traffic on i95 in stamford, CT and while making turns and going through intersections.
My 2000 Volvo S80 t6 stalls (typically in junctions) after 120k maintenance service / recall 155 etm software upgrade. The service was performed on 5/12/06 at authorized Volvo dealer (128volvo. Com). Since the service, the car stalled 5 times, and has been to the dealership three more times, without a fixing the problem. The dealer rejects my complains and wants this issue to "happen more frequently before taking action". Sudden stalls almost lead me to a traffic accident already at least once; the dealership isn't concerned about traffic safety.
: the contact stated while in stop and go traffic the vehicle stalled three times. The vehicle restarted each time and was taken to the dealership for the 60,000 miles checkup. Although there were no codes on the computer, the dealership performed a software update for this problem. Updated 4/19/2006 - 25 miles after the 60000 mile check up the vehicle stalled again and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The vehicle has not stalled again since the software updated was performed.
Car stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. Car has stalled intermittently several times.
The contact stated while driving the dashboard lights came on, and then the vehicle stalled. She was unable to restart the vehicle, and it was towed to the dealership, who determined the engine needed to be replaced. There have been no repairs made to the vehicle.
The contact stated the vehicle intermittently stalled/died and lost power due to throttle body failure.
2001 Volvo S80 developed problems with hard start up and shutting down. The vehicle stalled without warning along with a loss of power steering and power brakes. (cranks but will not stay running which may be due to the engine control module).
My 200 Volvo S80 stalled intermittently in 2003, so I had the throttle body 2000 cleaned at 48,989 miles when my car was still under warranty. A service on April 19, 2005 showed "no codes" though my car has been stalling periodically again since March of this year in a variety of dangerous settings: pulling up to a crowded curb at my kids' school, attempting to stop at a stop sign in a crowded intersection, driving 40 mph on a busy street, driving around a traffic circle in a mountain town, etc. My car has stalled 10-15 times since March. Each time, it was extremely difficult to steer, to brake and attempt to put my car in neutral and restart it when it stalled. Almost all of the times it stalled, it created a dangerous situation for me, for other drivers around me and for pedestrians. A visit to the service center today reveals that I need to spend $1,150 to replace the throttle body. I understand that, in time, the new throttle body will have the same problems as the old one. This is an extremely dangerous situation; I try to avoid driving near Volvos if possible.
Volvo S80. . . Stalls when idling. I almost got into an accident when it stalled in the middle of the intersection.
Car is stalling and idling irregularly.
Car stalling. I thought that it was just my bad luck- that I had bought a lemon. I purchased my 2000 Volvo S80 t6 sedan brand new in December 1999. I have had many, many problems with this car, all of which were covered by warranty. The reason I am writing to you just now is because of what I just read on the internet. My car stalled in traffic last month. I was coming to a stop at a light. The car re-started. The Volvo dealer could not find a problem. There has been no stalling since.
Sudden loss of power and stalling of engine at highway speed. Pulled car safely off road. Car restarted. Brought car to Volvo dealer who could not find any problem.
The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact indicated that the defect had occurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the problem. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 85,000.
The vehicle was a 2000 Volvo S80. The vehicle stalled and lost power on three occasions.
My wife was driving the car and making a left turn across traffic (with plenty of room to make the turn). As she decelerated to make the turn, the car died. As this happened, of course all power steering and brakes were lost. She narrowly avoided an accident, as she was stuck out in the intersection. I have spent some time researching this problem and its causes and I have found ample supporting information that many owners of this vehicle are having this problem of the car dying on deceleration. The problem is apparently due to an electronic throttle module (etm). This is a unique system installed by Volvo that does away with the traditional throttle cable. Apparently these devices are failing regularly, and must be replaced to the tune of about $1000 cost to the owner of the vehicle. I think that if a normal throttle-cable vehicle had a great tendency to break throttle cables, even on cars with low miles, this would lead to some sort of recall because this leads to an unsafe situation. This was such a near miss for my wife that she is afraid to drive the car until it is repaired. . Read more...
I own a 1999 Volvo S80 which I drive for business purposes. On August 17, 2004 the vehicle stalled at highway speed. Would barely run, even with full throttle. Had vehicle towed to nearest Volvo dealer, Volvo of louisville, ky. They replaced throttle body . Approx. 2 weeks later, had same occurrence. Car stalled at highway speed. Had vehicle towed to local dealer, century Volvo huntsville, al. They examined it and could not find any problem. It was not malfunctioning for them. They kept vehicle for several days trying to duplicate problem. I had a similar occurrence again approx. 5 days later. Instead of having vehicle towed again, the service rep suggested that the car might "reset" if left for 2-3 hours. I left car on roadside overnight and had my wife come pick me up. The next day I went back and the car drove fine. I had another occurrence at highway speeds on October 26, 2004. Vehicle towed to royal Volvo in birmingham. By the time they examined it, vehicle was no longer malfunctioning. They kept it running under load for several hours. There were no computer fault codes found that could have contributed to the problem. This is the same information that centrury Volvo had found and advised me of earlier. I continued to drive the car with a lot of concern through the winter. It went several months with no problems. I had another occurrence in may 2005. I was able to make it home by allowing the car to sit for 20-30 minutes and then it would drive for a short distance before going bad again. At this time I parked the car and began driving my secondary vehicle (a 94 Volvo 960). Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident with this vehicle on July 29, 2005 which forced me to drive the 99 S80 again. It stalled out again today (second day driven). I've had it towed to century Volvo in huntsville again. My salesman showed me an article in today's newspaper regarding this problem.
Car stalls while driving, mostly on turns. But a few times on a straight away. We have taken it to the dealesrhip several times and they cannot find anything wrong. Selling the vehicle to correct our problem.
