While driving down the road, my 2004 Volvo S80 2. 5t will suddenly lose power, surge forward or enter 'limp mode" with a message of "reduced engine performance" followed by "engine service required. " using an obdii code reader I discovered that these messages and my issue were caused by a problem within the electronic throttle module (etm). I took it into a local Volvo repair shop and they confirmed that this was a throttle body issue. If this problem occurs while I am driving within the city, it is fairly easy to pull over to safety, but on the freeway, losing power in the middle of traffic can be dangerous, and this has happened to me, causing a near accident. The issue is recurring and while it does seem to "clear itself" it has returned multiple times. There was a defect investigation, opened July 26th 2005 under NHTSA action number pe05041 for the exact same issue, and exact same group of problems. The report found that the issue was limited to S80s manufactured between 1999 and 2001. I would suggest that this issue is not limited to only those model years but has affected other years as well. I base my suggestion on information found by searching various Volvo owner discussion boards and finding others that have in fact been affected. Please take a look into this issue. . . As it has the potential to cause serious accidents as found in the original investigation.

Twin turbo had to be replaced in February 2008. Not cheap. But ever since then, there has been a lack of power and very sluggish on take off and when trying to pass on the highway. Had the control valve replaced just recently, helped some, but still very sluggish. Think the Volvo dealer here have morons for service tech's.

The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. The contact stated that she was a beneficiary of a class action settlement regarding a defective throttle module in the engine. The Volvo dealer would not repair the failure due to the warranty lawsuit. The lawsuit will expire whenever the vehicle becomes ten years old or reaches 200,000 miles. The failure causes the engine to surge from fast to slow or vice versa. The contact stated that there was no dealer nearby to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they stated that the computer would not diagnose the failure. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and they determined the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,000.
: the contact stated the abs, traction control, check engine, and total brake failure lights illuminate at different times. There is a noise that sounds as if the abs is activating. The vehicle has not been seen by the dealership or an independent repair shop.
On or about may 3rd, 2005, my wife was driving our 2001 Volvo t6 when she suddenly lost engine performance. She was traveling along a busy interstate and she managed to get the car into the emergency lane while holding up traffic behind her. The following msg appeared on the dash, "engine performance reduced". When she got the car to the side of the road, she turned the car off and called me to inform me the car was not working properly. She started the car after a few minutes and it performed okay on the way home. At this time, I thought it might have been a fuel or gas cap problem. She was very close to having a serious accident. The next day she was traveling with our children on a very busy bypass and the same problem occurred. This time, I made a call to the Volvo dealer and they informed me to leave the car off for a minute and the computer would reset. Not a good solution. Needless to say, she had to navigate the car from the inside lane to the emergency lane while traveling no faster than 20 mph. Again, this was a very busy bypass and luckily she managed to get the car to the side of the road. Finally, I drove the car the next day to see how it performed for me. Again, the car failed (I. E. Slowed to 20 mph on a 70 mph interstate) while I was driving. I called the dealer again the next day and they informed me they would need to see the car in order to diagnose. I informed them I needed recall work performed on an electrical fan so they could check into my "engine performance reduced" problem at the same time. All this said, the car failed approximately 8-10 times before I could get the car to the shop and repaired ($933. 00). The problem part was determined to be an electronic throttle module. Luckily, my wife, as well as myself, were able to get the car to the side of the road without getting ran over by traffic. This problem definitely needs the attention of the NHTSA. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Engine constantly surges forward while brakes are applied. At a stoplight, the car will just suddenly lurch forward. On highway, car lost power and acceleration. When I pulled over, the engine cut off. Dealership told me to the problem was the electronic throttle, which I replaced for $2100. The car continues to have engine surges.
I have a 2001 Volvo S80 2. 9 and I am experiencing my car trying to push itself and the rpm idling very fast and the car feels like its going to shut off. I submitted a complaint already about my sons s60 and c70, which are have the same troubles as my S80. The throttle control module I think is defective and should be recalled. Luckily my car hasn't turn off on me yet, but one time I thought I was going to get in an accident due to the car jumping from a complete stop. Please get this problem fixed. Thanks.
