My 2000 Volvo S80 t6 etm they said they would not fix it unless I bought a cem they said car wouldn't work without it. So they fixed it to a tune of $900. 00 for cem so I charged it back on my credit card because it's all covered on etm update. In the morning the car still revs more I want Volvo to buy this car back from me because no one informed me of this problems. They wouldn't give me old cem I asked.

Loss of power - the electronic throttle control module failed. I had just left home and was still in my sub-division. My auto came to a stop, was still running but had no power. I turned the motor off and then restarted it. Problem was resolved but I am concerned when & where it might happen again.
Surging idle speed. Car lurches forward at times when accelerating from a stop. Car almost stalls when idling in bumper to bumper traffic, requiring you to press on the gas to keep it from stalling, but this makes the car lurch forward even more. Several times I have almost hit the car in front of me. This problem is due to a faulty etm (electronic throttle module) that is described in the NHTSA defect investigation shown below. The etm in my car was replaced two years ago at 46k miles but the same symptoms are recurring. Nhtsa action number : pe05041 NHTSA recall campaign number : n/a
make : Volvo model: S80
manufacturer : Volvo cars of n. A. Llc. Year : 2001
component : vehicle speed control
date investigation opened : July 26, 2005
date investigation closed : open
summary:
the office of defects investigation (odi) has received one hundred and thirty-one (131) consumer complaints alleging a variety of concerns resulting from failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm) in the subject vehicles, including a sudden loss of speed and steering assist when driving in highway traffic and sudden and complete stall without warning. In some instances, it has been reported that the vehicles would restart, and in some cases the vehicles were towed. Some consumers allege that after having the etm replaced the new component failed in a similar manner. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

2000 S80 Volvo has defective throttle body according to Volvo repair center. This is a know and wide spread defect. It causes the engine to surge sporadically or to die. Volvo has issued a bulletin to all service centers advising them of the defect. Volvo will not replace or correct the problem for those auto out of warranty.
Shortly after buying a Volvo 80, I noticed that the car would surge periodically. I was told that the throttle body needed to be cleaned. After reading up on this, it sounded like a waste of money so I am stuck with a $40+k car that has a sizable defect. The surging is so bad that if you don't hold the brake pedal hard the car will surge forward ie at red lights. Nothing was done to correct this failure. I am the second owner. Also I had to replace a ball joint on this car after a recalled ball joint was installed at my cost. The dealer said the recall was only a bolt and not the whole joint but I verified that the previous owner had both ball joints replaced via a Volvo recall. I believe the recalled joint was defective like the original one. No accidents occured but it put my steering way out of whack and needed an alignment. (all at my cost).
2000 Volvo S80 4 dr. Erratic idling/surging with engine light coming on. Leads to stalling out on major highways on many occasions narrowly avoiding life threatening traffic accidents trying to pull "dead" car to side of road. Brought car to Volvo dealer and car was repaired for $1332. 50. Repair included replacement of: electronic throttle body($588. 50) with software download($28. 00) to allow etm to function along with gasket($4. 00). Replacement of mass air flow meter($234. 21) total labor/parts= $1254. 71 + $75. 29 tax + $2. 50 enviromental fee??= $1332. 50 I unfortunately do not have old part. Please note that now @ 30,000 miles after replacemnt on 12/1/2003 the electronic throttle body is showing the "signs" of a need for replacement again.
My wife and I noticed that the NHTSA is investigating power loss complaints regarding the s-80 model of the 2000 Volvo. We had a quick and complete loss of power on the interstate on October 24, 2003. We were able to drive off the interstate and get to a parking lot. The engine stopped and could not be restarted. We had the car towed to the crown Volvo dealership in greensboro, nc (tel: 336 834-7350). Crown Volvo replaced the electronic throttle module and downloaded new software. The repair cost us $899. 48. The mileage on the car was 79,089 miles. In February 2003, the car was stalling repeatedly. When restarted, the engine revved and stalled again. The car was towed to Volvo SAAB of charlotte (tel: 704 563-8816) and a repair was made. The mass air flow sensor was replaced at a cost $443. 23. The odometer at the time of the repair was 68,066 miles. The car had no malfunctions between the February and October repairs. The service centers retained all replaced components. The vehicle id is yv1ts94dxy1088452. Service reference numbers are the following: crown Volvo - invoice c51317 Volvo SAAB of charlotte - invoice vocs190875.
The vehicle gave no indication prior to the maf and throttle unit giving out the first time. We were stranded on interstate 15 in the middle of the desert. The vehicle all of a sudden just stopped running. Luckily the item was repaired, still under warranty. This same part failed for the second time 9/4/2004. Replaced again after having it towed from residence to Volvo of las vegas. Smell of gas and engine surge occurred prior to stalling. Brought into Volvo of las vegas 9/2/2005 to have checked for engine surge and sporadic rpm surges. I informed them that it is probably the maf and or the throttle unit, Volvo of las vegas says that nothing is wrong. However, I had to pay $105. 00 for labor with no resolve. I am very concerned for the safety of my family if this same instance occurs again.
Prior to the failure, the idle of the car would surge up and down at an idle between 500-1500 rpm's. Trying to park the car the car would jump forward at each surge. A couple of times as my wife was driving the car died on her, one time around a corner and she could hardly steer. The car would only surge if the foot was off the throttle, therefore it would stall as you tried to corner or went to hit the brake. Another time it stalled was in a traffic slow down on the freeway. The part finally failed one day when the car just would not start. We had to have it towed to the dealer where they replaced the throttle control. Two more times after the tc was replaced the car started to surge again. At those times as soon as the car started to surge I brought to the dealer. Because it was the same part that was replaced there was no charge. The dealer told me they must have been defective parts. One more time the car did the same thing and I returned to the dealer and once again they supposedly replaced the tc and told me that the flame trap was the cause of all the problems and needed to be replaced. Since they wanted another $1000 to replace that part I decided I would do it myself. The dealer told me they would not warranty the tc anymore. After I replaced the flame trap, which there was nothing wrong with it, 6 months later the car started again with the same problem all aver again. That's where I am at now. Originally when the car died and was towed to the dealer it cost me $1390. They replaced the mass air flow sensor $222. 53, the throttle body $573. 10, gasket $3. 44, etm reload $35. 75, labor $439. 75 and tax. This occurred on July 3, 2003. The car then went in several times for the same thing with the last being may 18, 2004. And now we are back to the same problem again!!!.
