Driving on freeway at night, experienced a sudden loss of power. Engine check light came on. Fortunately coasted to a stop on an exit ramp. Upon stopping observed smoke coming thrugh the edges of the hood. Turned off the ignition and exited the car. Noticed a flame under the engine compartment. Within one minute the front end of the car burst into flames and burned in a brght yellow fireball extimated to be 20 feet high. It burned until the fire trucks arrived 20 minutes later. The heat was extremely intense. The hood vaporized, metal parts of the engine melted, tires exploded. Car had a full tank of gas and strongly suspect malfunction of fuel system. Had we been trapped in the car on the freeway, there could have been four fatalities.

At the end of June of 2008 I noticed that my 2000 Volvo s-80 smelled of gas. Subsequently, on 06/20/2008 abby car care (559-438-7181) mechanic kevin determined, per my receipt, that diagnose fuel leak-fuel leaking from the top tank found defective at flange for evap system leaking were it attaches to top of the fuel tank not repairable. ¿ I was also advised by kevin that the leak was not caused by wear and tear but was defective / not repairable in nature. Abby car care replaced the fuel tank. After learning of this leak and doing some research on the internet goggle search engine, it appears that other Volvo owners have experienced similar problems with leaks to the gas tanks. I did call my local Volvo dealer (fresno Lincoln Mercury Volvo 5200 n. Blackstone avenue fresno, CA 93710 telephone number 559-226-5175) and advised them of my leaky gas tank and they advised me that there was no recall and didn't seem to concerned with my problem other than giving me there customer service toll free number.
While driving at any speed vehicle stalled, and then won't start again. Vehicle was towed to the dealership. Floor manager indicated, a pipe on the fuel rail broke and needed to be replaced at consumer's expense of $1200. Consumer indicated the fuel tank/fuel pump, and fuel rail was just one unit.
While driving and without warning the fuel tank has cracked causing fluid to leak out. Dealer notified. Ts.

Leak in gas tank of 2001 Volvo s-80. Told by ramsey Volvo that it was caused by a "road hazard"-that we must have hit something that caused the puncture to the side of the gas tank even though we were traveling down a major highway from boston to new york and we were unaware of any incident.

While driving 55-60 mph, brakes were pulsating, after applying brakes again noticed brakes were fading. Consumer pulled over and noticed rotors were red hot. Dealer replaced front rotors and pads. The gas tank had a defect that would cause a vacuum leak. The front suspension makes a cracking noise when turning due to ball joint failure. The gear shifter switch makes loud clicking noise. The rear passenger door handle could not be opened from outside. Automatic transmission had slippage and shudder while up shifting, creating a vehicle loss of control. Passenger side rear seat backrest cushion makes noise due to loose clips. The front passenger window developed a wind noise due to defective window seals. Due to design fault, the upper torque mount bushing cracked. The driver side front headlight lens broke. The consumer is asking for a full refund of the actual price paid for the vehicle or for it to be replaced with a new equally equipped vehicle.
Dealer has replace fuel tank due to leakages under tank. Feel free to provide any further information.
While attempting to fill the fuel tank (3/4 empty, 112 degrees f), the tank would not accept fuel. I removed the nozzle to see if the filler was obstructed, and a geyser of pressurized gasoline was ejected from the filler neck lasting about five seconds, and drenching my clothing and the ground in a puddle of gasoline. Fortunately there were no ignition sources present .
