1 Fuel Injection problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/10/2006

In July I was traveling in traffic at idle speed when my car started to surge then stalled. I was able to restart it, however I had to keep one foot on the gas and the other on the brake to keep it running. I was able to limp it home using this method to keep the rpms up. When the codes were read it said the 4 oxygen sensors were out of range. I tuned up the car, cleaned the throttle body and oxygen sensors and reset the codes. (65,000 miles) after this the car seemed alright until around 79,000 miles. My wife and I were on rte. 1a on the maine coast in traffic . While going around a sharp curve the car stalled. I lost control of my steering and brakes and the car nearly went over the cliff into the ocean. I was able to get it under control and the car restarted with the idle surging. I limped the car home using the gas and brake method. At intersections if I let the car idle the car would surge forward then stall. My mechanic read the codes and told me the map sensor and O2 sensors were bad and replaced them. This seemed to work for a while, however the car reverted back to the same problems. I finally called gallo Volvo who had serviced my car under warranty until 60,000 miles and the service manager told me that this was a known problem covered under a hidden recall. Once a customer complained they could fix it. I brought my car to them and they reprogrammed the computer to "repair" the problem. My car no longer stalls, however it surges and hesitates upon acceleration nearly causing people to hit me in traffic. I am still trying to resolve this problem after over $1800 dollars in expenses, multiple near accidents and numerous hours of my time.

2 Fuel Injection problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 03/13/2006

1999 Volvo S80 t6 3/08/06 replaced transmission ( 75,000 miles) ( $4,800) 08/05 replace radiator 08/05 replaced etm 04 - replaced front suspension / sway bars / struts/ etc. . Volvo under engineered the front end of this car and if you go to web blogs it is in almost every 1999 - 2000 s-80 vehicle. . . Its disgusting that this car is allowed to continue or Ford/ Volvo isn't held liable. . .

3 Fuel Injection problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 03/07/2006

2001 S80 Volvo etm failure. It started as vehicle hesitation, then proceeded to surging forward with no throttle input, then progressed to no accelerator response when applying the brake pedal, then to stalling when coasting leaving the driver with no power steering or brakes at speeds up to 55 mph, then to rough idle and check engine light. All symptoms were present upon taking to the dealer based on some web research to identify to problem. The dealer returned with an analysis for timing belt replacement, engine tune up, engine coolant flush, crankcase ventilation system cleaning, brake system flushing, and mass air flow replacement amounting to an initial cost of $1980. 00 us. I requested a conference with the technician, and a review of the diagnostics report. The end result was a maf replacement paid for by me (customer) and amazingly the tech notes recommended cleaning of the crankcase ventilation system and the etm cleaning which was covered by the dealer. Total cost was $328. 21 to consumer and balance covered by dealer. The repairs were made on 3/07/06, replaced maf unavailable. I feel that I have been taken advantage of and essentially paid $328 unnecessarily due to further web research identifying cleaning of the etm and crankcase ventilation system would in fact cause trouble codes leading the replacement of the maf.

4 Fuel Injection problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 11/28/2005

I own a 2001 Volvo s-80. There is a dangerous problem with this car . It involves the electronic throttle module (etm). The car at times will not move even though the engine is running and the car is in gear. It just will not move. Particularly when trying to move into traffic. I am aware through my reading of the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of vehicles with the same problem. Volvo knows about this but to date has done nothing to correct it. I also know that NHTSA is investigations the problem and I wanted to list my name with you for a complaint on this.

5 Fuel Injection problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 10/05/2005

3 independent issues: throttle module - vehicle suddenly and unpredictably surges forward, particularly during idle or low speeds while in forward or reverse either stopped or moving, causing potential safety problems. Transmission module - vehicle suddenly and unpredictably looses power, presenting the driving performance of a "slipping" transmission, causing unpredictable responsiveness to changing traffic conditions, and potential safety problems. Front suspension - "knocking" noise from front suspension component(s), causing lack of driving confidence and concerns of driving safety and performance. All 3 of these problems are widely reported as chronic design, performance, safety and reliability issues for the same model years by other Volvo owners. In newer model years, Volvo has made manufacturing changes to address these recognized issues, but has not as yet successfully addressed and responded to these safety issues. Further, these issues have been reported to NHTSA by other Volvo owners.

6 Fuel Injection problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/20/2005

(1) on more than one occasion the Volvo S80 has had shuttering of the engine at idle. (2) on more than one occasion the Volvo S80 has placed the occupants at risk of bodily injury due to the loss of power and sudden acceleration in high traffic situations. (3) the Volvo S80 has been to the dealer on two occasions - the first occasion, I believe the throttle body components were cleaned and the warning light reset - the second and latest visit, on sept 21, I was informed that the throttle body needed to be replaced at an approximate cost of $850 and that my abs brake module also needed to be replaced at an approximate cost of $830.

7 Fuel Injection problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 07/14/2005

Purchased a Volvo S80 in 2001;vehicle currently has 60700 miles and 3 automatic transmissions & throttle body replacement.

8 Fuel Injection problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 07/07/2005

(1)car stalled in traffic four times over three months. Power steering/brakes failed. (2) car stalled and would not maintain idle in drive-limped home to dealer 30 miles away. Car would start and run if rpm were over 1500. Lower than that would result in stall. . . And restart to get home. (3) parts required were map sensor, throttle body, etm reload.

9 Fuel Injection problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 07/06/2005

1999 Volvo S80 t6, sudden loss of speed when driving in highway traffic, with sudden partial and at times complete stall w/out warning. This has happened five times, twice I had to be towed. Extensive work has been done on the etm by two very good Volvo service departments, but the problem persists and is a mystery as to what to do about it. This is very frustrating - I need this car to work!!.

10 Fuel Injection problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 07/03/2005

I was driving my 2001 Volvo S80 2. 9l and was about to make a left turn at a four way intersection. When the traffic flow was clear I pressed the accelerator but the car died. Thankfully, I was not struck by the oncomming vehicle. I took the car to Volvo of richardson in richardson texas and was told it needed a mass air sensor and electronic throttle body. The factory warranty will not cover the part since it has lapsed.

11 Fuel Injection problem of the 2003 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 05/20/2005

2003, Volvo S80. I had just pulled into a parking space at my preschool son's school, I went to shift gears and take my foot off the brake and my car had a sudden accelertation causing me to be without control of my car for over 50 feet, hitting a tree, 3 shrubs and a 3000 lb. Rock. My preschooler and I sustained minor injuries but my car is totalled. My car is in an auto body shop awaiting insurance approval for a totalled car. My son is traumatized and I was shaken up for days. I am concerned that there was a machanical failure but I have not received a call back from Volvo about an investigation. I would like to request a formal investigation into this.

12 Fuel Injection problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 08/04/2004

We own a 2001 Volvo S80 with an electronic throttle module problem that we attempted to have the Volvo dealer fix in August 04. The car had 98,000 miles on it at that time. The dealer claimed to not be aware of any problems with the etm, but that they could attempt to clean the system, which they proceeded to do at $566. The problem wasn't fixed, but the dealer said they could now fix the problem for an additional $1000. This really irked me, I never went back, now it is a year later and the car still is not fixed, but it won't pass inspection un til it is corrected. I've visited several non-dealer mechanics who have all said they can't fix the problem, so I'm stuck having to go back to a dealer who has tried to swindle me. I recently became aware of the thousands of complaints about this problem with the Volvos, but I refuse to have the untrustworthy and "unknowing" Volvo dealership touch the car. I now have found a mechanic who formally worked for Volvo attempt to repair the car. It will probably cost me doulbe what the Volvo mechanic has said it would, but there is no faith in the dealership. I un derstand there is a class action lawsuit against Volvo because of this problem, I will save all my receipts for the possibility of filing a claim either with you or with the lawsuit plaintiffs.

13 Fuel Injection problem of the 2003 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 11/26/2003

Dear mr. Doolan, his is to notify about the failure of the vehicle S80 on the highway and the difficulty we are facing with the dealer that sold the car to us. I, prasad v kondapavuluru,MD has bought the car with win # yv1ts92d241352373, from darrell waltrip Volvo in franklin TN on 11/01/03. On 11/26/03 the vehicle suddenly stopped and it was taken to the dealer. After a week we were told the gas indicator is broken. My attempts to get a written report about the cause for the vehicle failure have been unsuccessful. The event was very traumatic to my wife who was driving the vehicle at that time. She was 9 months pregnant and due to deliver the following week. With the shock she has gone through she is scared to drive the vehicle. The general manager mr mangrum's callous response was that " people can have shock even with a flat tyre". We appreciate your intervention and response in this mattter.

14 Fuel Injection problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 08/28/2003

My 1999 vovlo S80 engine began surging when coming to a stop. The idle would bounce up and down by itself from 500 - 1500rpm. The car finaly set dheck engine codes that indicated that the mass air flow sensor had failed. Replacing maf corrected the issue, however the car has been showing signs of the same failure again. First maf unit was replaced on August 28, 2003 with 63,935 miles, now at 104,380 the same issues have begun to re-appear. It appears to me that the current design of the 1999 S80 maf has a design flaw that limits its useful life. I have never had to replace a maf sensor before now I am looking at a re-occurance on the same vehicle.

15 Fuel Injection problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 08/11/2000

Dealer advised car had a defective steering rack, which was replaced along with associated "o" rings. Eleven days after warranty work was completed, owner was driving vehicle when the car caught on fire. Fire was attributed to a "crimped" o-ring. Dealer replaced the o-ring and has been test driving vehicle since then. The o-ring has crimped again recreating the same scenario. Owner is now in the middle between dealer and Volvo pointing fingers at each other.
