Volvo S80 owners have reported 4 problems related to paint (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo S80 based on all problems reported for the S80.
Severe subframe rust due to the exhaust on Volvo S80 v8 being too close and melting the paint off. Car is very clean and we'll taken care of. Appears to be a very common problem on the v8 S80s.

Severe subframe rust due to excessive heat from the exhaust on the v8 models of the Volvo S80s only. Dealer said the excessive heat will melt the paint off, causing rust to attract to the subframe. The subframe is a critical component to the car, unfortunately although Volvo has said this is a common problem on the v8 models, they will not do anything to fix the problem. This is the only place my vehicle has rust, and the car is undercoated yearly.

The subframe/engine cradle has a large rot hole which is increasing in size at a high rate. The car is only a 2009 with less than 100k miles on it (and was maintained very well its whole life) but this still occurred. I've met a lot of people with S80 v8s who have this same issue. It seems that the design on the car is flawed where the exhaust is too close to the subframe, so the heat eventually wears down the paint and then rust starts. This is a major structural component which also makes the car very dangerous to drive at the moment. Additionally, Volvo has a 12-year, unlimited mile corrosion warranty, yet they won't honor this. Volvo first said the warranty was only good toward sheet metal. When told that the subframe was made of stamped sheet metal, they then said only painted components. When told that the subframe is painted and the rust was actually caused by the paint failing off from exhaust heat, they finally just said no. There have been much more minor issues with cars that have caused recalls. With this issue being dangerous and common, it simply needs to be addressed. As an owner, I should not be forced to spend thousands of dollars at the Volvo dealer to keep myself safe and correct the mistake they made when initially designing the car. The image provided is from about a year ago. I put my car on the lift yesterday and saw that the rot hole in the subframe was noticeably larger. In the photo, if you zoom in, you can see that the rust is spreading behind where it's already visible. In person, you are able to tell that this is a very serious issue. Thank you for your consideration.
1) engine idles rough, problem became so bad that car stalls at low speeds,
lost power steering & "engine dies" at low speeds (unsafe!). Local mech referred to etm warranty program to re-program faulty
etm module. Took car to dlr, re-programmed etm car died again!
turns out bad battery as well: several hundred $$$ to replace
battery. Car does not accelerate smoothly, large "shudders" present
when merging onto hwy, during transmission/gear shift. Not good!
2) airbag "srs-urgent service" warning indicator light is on. Good local
mech. States this is a $1000 repair. 3) "check brake light" warning indicator light turns on when depressing on
brake pedal: good local mech. States that this is "normal" requires
exact matching electrical resistance of all brake lamps to ensure that "check
brake light" warning does not occur (in actuality the brake lights work fine, the
built-in-test is faulty). 4) "check engine light" comes on 2-3 times in last 3 months. Major service was
required. One fault was isolated to fuel tank gas cap: if not secured properly
"ecm-4308 (leak diagnostic) large leak" occurs. . . Remedied by twisting fuel cap
3 full rotations, after re-fueling gas tank. Good local mech. Diagnosed
the loose gas cap problem, warned me about it, and didn't charge me (nice!). 5) body paint is very susceptible to chipping & scratches. Paint or exterior panels
are very soft and easily damaged. Another shame, this car looks great but
does not hold up very well under typical parking lot conditions (I. E. Someone
parked next to you opens their car door into the side of your car resulting in a
large scratch). Solution: purchase a fancy car cover and protect the body paint, if you can!
6) parking brake "seems loose", upon parking car and engaging parking brake the
vehicle rolls almost 30 cm bwds or fwd depending on level or inclined surface.
