5 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 01/10/2018

While pulling into a parking space from the driving lane of a parking lot, my Volvo had a surge of power that could not be controlled/stopped by applying the brakes. I was barely in motion with my foot on the brake when we (my mother, sister, and I) heard the engine roar and the car surged forward. I applied more pressure to the brake but the car would not stop and went over a wheel stop so I then started pumping the brake. The car finally stopped moving once it hit a pipe bollard but the engine would not turn off, my electrical went haywire and I could not get the car in park to remove the key. Upon impact the passenger seat belt did not hold my mother in place and the air bags didn't deploy. I am the original owner of this car which was in pristine condition but now wrecked. I have all the service records for this car and have had problems in the past with the following items; faulty cooling fan module, engine running hot, faulty battery cell, faulty scu module, faulty starter, faulty map sensor, faulty oil level sensor, faulty power steering rack, faulty fuel pressure sensor, failing lamp socket, faulty schraeder valves, faulty alternator and voltage regulator, and a faulty ac compressor.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 01/10/2018

While turning into a parking space from the lane of a parking lot, with my foot on the brake, my Volvo S80 accelerated so powerfully it could be heard yards away. I applied the brake harder but the car wouldn't stop and surged over a wheel stop, it was still surging so I started pumping the brake, the car finally crashed into a pipe bollard bringing it to a stop, the car wouldn't turn off, the electrical was going haywire and I could not get the car into park to remove the key. Upon impact the seat belt did not hold my mother into place and the airbags did not deploy. I am the original owner of this 2008 Volvo S80 awd with 58k miles on it in pristine condition. I have had problems in the past with the cooling fan module, engine running hot, the scu module, map sensor, a faulty fuel sensor, faulty schraeder valves, faulty alternator and voltage regulator, faulty ac compressor but never a power surge to this extreme.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 01/19/2016

While we were try I g to repair this vehicle we were test driving it a d came to a full stop at a stoplight signal and could not downshift vehicle into 1st gear from a stop after the vehicle was at normal running temperature. Causing it to go I to a limp home mode. So while we were driving we noticed that the floor was saturated with antifreeze and a sweet odor from the vents was noticed with a smoke . We serviced the transmission without success . Also noticed an no oil pressure read on dash only when we were not in acceleration. This disappear when upon acceleration and returned when idling. We serviced the oil filter the fluids performed a motor flush first and replaced the oil pressure switch. Without successful repairs and continue of the code returns after performing a drive cycle numerous times. We are convinced this is caused by the recall #r155. Thank you for help in repairing this issue under the NHTSA recall#06v441000.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 10/08/2011

Driving in the city and when trying to stop on a traffic light the brakes became hard and engine was not running well. When I tried to drive off in the green light the speed control of the gas pedal was very chaotic. I got a message of engine system service required. I took the car to the local Volvo dealer and he diagnosed a faulty throttle etm asking 2000 $ to replace. After researching I found that there was already a recall on that by Volvo and when I asked the dealer he said that this was true but my car was more than 10 years old ( although he could have informed me about that in the first place). He informed me that a software service on the etm of my car was done in 2006 ( after the recall?) but this did not fix the problem as apparently the problem is with the etm design ( faltering potentiometer). This car is very dangerous and it will probably go to the junkyard, but we should be concerned by all Volvos remaining on the street with faulty etm's, which the numerous complaints filed at NHTSA show.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/03/2011

I was driving along a busy street, when I came to a stop sign the brakes where hard to push, when I finally stopped the car, you could still fill the car trying to move forward I took my foot of the brakes and the car sped up on it's on reaching close to 40 mph again I was barely able to stop the car do to a stiff brake pedal. I put the car in park and shut it off, once I restarted the car it was sputtering and wouldn't idle correctly every time I put the car in gear it would shut off now I'm getting an error message that says service engine system urgent.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2002 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 08/17/2011

Car surges and hesitates when changing gears, it slows down and accelerates randomly when I push down on the gas. It sticks and won't let me change gears in manual mode and it struggles to change gears in automatic mode. This problem is dangerous, it will decelerate randomly when driving on the highway both with the cruise on and off.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 06/20/2011

On winding downhill road (1500 ft. Drop in 2 miles) car went from 45 to non-optional 20 mph due to failure throttle body. Part know to suddenly fail was subject of lawsuit about 2005 which settled in limited time free replacement now expired. Should have been a recall as now permits safety issue to continue indefinitely in automobile type/model typically driven decades. Note: car when slowed backed up downhill traffic on the decent is the major cause fatal and other accidents in the area, and set stage for out-of-control slowing accidents. Alternative of pulling off and requesting tow at least as equally hazardous.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

I am writing you today in regard of a recall for my 1999 Volvo S80's etm (electronic throttle module). In 2006, there was a class action lawsuit in which Volvo agreed to extend the warranty of the etm to 10 years or 200,000 miles. I have owned the car for about a year and bought the car from my father. My father owned the car since 2007, and had frustratingly spent a total of approximately $7,000 in (documented) repairs. He never received notification of this recall and would have undoubtedly made that repair knowing the part was recalled and there was a strong likelihood the part was defective. The car as of now has under 126,000 miles and has been out of warranty since 2009. Volvo will cover a software upgrade for free, but in the event the software patch fails, the repair will cost in upwards of $1000. Is there anything you can do on my behalf to get that repair taken care of? •service bulletin number : 155 •NHTSA item number : 10019595 •component : vehicle speed control •date of bulletin : Mar 20, 2006• I sincerely thank you for any help you can give me.

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

The car throttle is faulty. My car revs to high rpm when idle and at low speeds. It also is in limp mode. When this problem was found and recalled in 2006 I brought the car in for the software upgrade, but the car is still trying to lunge foward at low speeds and reving in idle. I was told by Volvo customer care there was nothing they will do for the problem since the software had been upgraded even though the trottle is faulty.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

I have a 2000 Volvo s 80 and it was sold to me by a dealer this car has so many problems and I feel that when I took the car to Volvo they tried to charge me 6400 just to fix the problem like abs sensors, stc sensor , throttle etc I feel its un fair I only had the car for 3days what can I do.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 01/17/2011

The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. The contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle independently decelerated to 20 mph and the vehicle would not respond to acceleration attempts. The vehicle was shut off and restarted but the failure was still present. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who advised that the vehicle probably needed a new computer but the mechanic was not positive that the repair would correct or was causing the failure. The contact then called the manufacturer in reference to NHTSA campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) but was informed that the vehicle had previously been repaired according to the recall. The vehicle was not further repaired. The current mileage was approximately 166,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 162,000.

25 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 12/20/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Volvo S80. The contact stated that while stopping at an intersection and trying to accelerate, the vehicle suddenly stalled and would not move. Once the vehicle was started, it suddenly stalled again halfway through the intersection; the engine revved but the vehicle would not move. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 2,200.

26 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

The contact owns a 1999 Volvo S80. While accelerating from a stop, the contact felt a thump from the driver side wheel. The failure occurred whenever she accelerated from a stop or decelerated. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the insulation surrounding the wires in the engine compartment were degraded. The vehicle also displayed difficulty when shifting into fourth gear. While driving approximately 70 mph, the contact could not shift out of third gear after attempting to accelerate from 40 mph. The failure occurred intermittently and the check engine light began to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in recalls 00v238000 (suspension: front: control arm: upper ball joint), 02v096000 (engine and engine cooling: cooling system: fan), and 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 78,600 and the current mileage was approximately 79,100.

27 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/09/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Volvo S80. The contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate before responding to acceleration attempts. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised that the throttle module had failed and needed to be cleaned and replaced. The throttle was cleaned but the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure after the cleaning so the throttle was not replaced. The failure recurred within a few weeks. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. Updated 09/27/11 updated 09/30/11.

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

2000 Volvo S80. Transmission failure with only 109,000 miles. I have always done the required maintenance and service on the vehicle, which included a transmission flush in 2003. I had no prior warnings, no slipping, nothing. The transmission fluid is clean, at the level it is supposed to be at, no leaks, and no warning "check engine" or "transmission" lights came on. My mechanic said that due to the sudden failure with no warning, it is most likely something internal that just broke and that I have to get a new transmission.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

My check engine light went on. I took my car to my mechanic who informed me the code was for throttle body position sensor and that there was a recall. I called the Volvo dealer and asked them about it. They said, yes there was a recall for software and that my vehicle had gotten the upgrade. I asked if there was anything else they could do about it, the employee in Volvo service said no. I received the same answer when I asked them in person. On March 1, 2011, nearly a year later, I asked another mechanic, who informed me that if the software upgrade didn't work, the dealer was supposed to replace the entire throttle body. I called the another Volvo dealer who informed me that yes, this was the case. My car was one day out of coverage for the recall now. And sometime within the year my computer was reset and the problem code for the throttle body is gone. I am upset because when it was a problem for me, the first dealer gave me the incorrect information about the recall. I was driving for a long time with my car in limp mode and a malfunctioning throttle body. I am sure that the dealer was obligated to replace the throttle body, since it is part of the acceleration system. I think you should compel them to replace my throttle body or guarantee replacement if my throttle body malfunctions again.

30 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 12/03/2009

I own a 2000 Volvo s-80 t6, which I have had nothing but problems with. Before I had it, my son owned it and also had problems with it. One is that the vehicle doesn't start, it stalls, and it surges forward or in reverse. All since 2005. Just last month I ran into my garage door and several times almost was involved in vehicle crashes due to it either surging forward or dying on me. I read how there is a possible recall on 2001 models, so why does it not include 2000 yrs. Does it take an accident with lives lost before anything is done to correct these problems. The vehicle has been taken in to the dealership and I have been told that the problem has been taken care of. So why is it still happening? the last incident happened on January 3rd of 2009, where I ran into my garage, caused from the car surging. The vehicle has been in for the same problem on numerous occasions.

31 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/22/2009

Took my 1999 Volvo S80 to a Volvo dealership in texas and they want me to pay out of pocket to replace the etm ( electronic throttle module) because my vehicle went into service in March 1999 so the 10years/200,000 extended warranty for the etm, Volvo recall no. 155, has expired.

32 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1999 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Volvo S80 stalls at speed, company won't honor extended warranty.

33 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

The events that are occurring are that my vehicle will die on me, at times it won't start, and it lunges forward as I start the engine. It is also idling very high. It happens almost daily. I have had my vehicle checked for any recalls, and have had sensors replaced several times. Now my vehicle is smelling of gas as I try and start it. I had it repaired on 7/22/09, as the vehicle wouldn't pass smog, at which time apparently they replaced a sensor at that time.

34 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2004 Volvo S80

Failure Date: 04/02/2009

While driving down the road, my 2004 Volvo S80 2. 5t will suddenly lose power, surge forward or enter 'limp mode" with a message of "reduced engine performance" followed by "engine service required. " using an obdii code reader I discovered that these messages and my issue were caused by a problem within the electronic throttle module (etm). I took it into a local Volvo repair shop and they confirmed that this was a throttle body issue. If this problem occurs while I am driving within the city, it is fairly easy to pull over to safety, but on the freeway, losing power in the middle of traffic can be dangerous, and this has happened to me, causing a near accident. The issue is recurring and while it does seem to "clear itself" it has returned multiple times. There was a defect investigation, opened July 26th 2005 under NHTSA action number pe05041 for the exact same issue, and exact same group of problems. The report found that the issue was limited to S80s manufactured between 1999 and 2001. I would suggest that this issue is not limited to only those model years but has affected other years as well. I base my suggestion on information found by searching various Volvo owner discussion boards and finding others that have in fact been affected. Please take a look into this issue. . . As it has the potential to cause serious accidents as found in the original investigation.
