Brake Electric Antilock problems of the 1998 Volvo V70

Ten problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1998 Volvo V70. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

The abs / traction control unit on these cars fail in unreasonably high numbers. It's such a big business, that mechanics sell thousands of refurbished units on ebay. Volvo charges over $700 for the parts, and is avoiding repairing this item because I'm sure some actuary told them it's cheaper to pay claims and defend lawsuits than to protect their customers. I have not experienced an accident or crash as a result, but I'm sure hundreds of people have.

2 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2004

Abs brakes activated under normal driving conditions, tracs off, rear wheel spin in slippery conditions even with the tracks on. Took to the dealer and they replace the abs control module (over $600). Car was behaving in an unsafe manner as the abs brakes would activate and prevent car from stopping for a few seconds until the abs system switched off.

3 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2003

While driving, the abs and traction control indicator illuminated. Both lights stayed for the duration of travel.

4 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2002

Volvo cross country's from 1998 and possibly other model years are turning up with malfunctioning central control units for their abs . It is hard to get information from the dealership regarding this problem, but it is clear the malfunction is widespread in this model and that it adversely affects the car's braking and abs. Replacement of the part costs more than $500, which may prevent many Volvo owners from quickly addressing the problem, which according to independent mechanics, poses a significant safety threat. I know first-hand the malfunction caused a significant deterioration in my cross country's handling and braking. Because this appears to be a product defect that affects the car's safety, I sincerely hope regulators will encourage Volvo to do the right thing and issue a recall. Thank you.

5 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2002

Abs / traction control module failed which resulted in loss of abs and traction control. It has come to my attention that this is a common safety issue with Volvos. My mechanic from pro Volvo (tele# 732-303-0770)claims he changes 2 abs modules every week. The dealership even stocks 14 of these modules in its inventory. The repair is also not cheap at approx. $650. 00. Mr.
