I took my car to the dealer because it was not passing smog and had trouble for several years. So the smog dealer told me to take it to the dealer. I told the dealer that I was trying to pass smog, but the car had been driving very good in spite of the smog problem. They replaced everything that you can imagine at a cost of over 10,000 dollars which both of us spent in a two month period. But after they got it to pass smog I noticed another more serious problem, it would stop running in the middle of traffic. I told them about this new problem and they replaced the key and it still stopped on me 3 x on the freeway and streets. I returned the car going down the main streets for 2 hours and lift it with the company. Mckevitt Volvo in san leandro CA. They wanted to charge me but I told them my are did not have this problem until they worked on it! I need a working car and I am in dept as a result of their work. I am a 65 year old retired teacher but I can't afford this dept. 11.
Car intermittently loses power and sometimes ets light comes on. Ususally in the middle of traffic.
Why aren't you doing anything about Volvo building crap? they should be in jail. Etm - design was unacceptable from a day one. The etm is causing surging, stalling and many other symptoms. Once Volvo started to replace some of them, they used new ones with exactly the same flawed design. Abs module - is known for causing loss of braking power, early brake pads wear and damaging transmission. Front brake calipers - rust on calipers is squeezing rubber boots around sliding pins. Damage to rotors, pads and wheel bearings. Front lights low beams - unacceptable light output. Front seat belts - are cutting into side trim and side trim is cutting into seat belts. Wind shield wipers - highest speed is useless in heavy rain. Cruise control - rpm surges while going 55mph and turning on the cruise control. Do something!.
Vehicle went into 'limp home mode' on highway. Speed went from 65 mph in passing lane to 15 mph. I had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the break down lane. Auto is 2000 Volvo V70 cross country wagon. Ets system was replaced at 66,800 miles when this problem occurred before. The car now exhibits the same behavior at 122,000 miles.
Car began to run in an uncontrollable manner, speeding up then loosing power while shaking violently. My wife was driving with my daughter in the car. They were terrified. I drove it after she called for help it was a terrible ride. Had this occurred in traffic on one of the many high speed roads around here, this could have been a tragic event. The following morning it acted the same and I drove it to the nearest Volvo repair shop. It was determined that it was a failed electronic throttle body. The repair cost as over $1100. It was not covered by the extended warranty I had purchased for the car. I had the car repaired. The shop told me that they had seen many such failures in Volvos at about 50k . They joked it was a serious mid-life crisis for Volvos. I did not find it funny. It was a devastating, unplanned cost. I called Volvo, they were not interested in cost sharing or any sort of help.
The ets light on my 2000 Volvo v-70 came on the and the car drove very erratically.
Bought used 2000 Volvo V70 xc 3 weeks ago. Driving 35 mph when the car started shaking, felt like bucking & flat tire. Then the car just died. Etc (electronic throttle control / module) light came on. I was told it would cost at least $900 to fix and that only a Volvo dealer could fix it, not my Volvo mechanic. I was told by Volvo over the telephone that this was "being looked into" that other people have had a similar problem. If I was going any faster I feel as though it would have caused an extreme safety issue. Luckily I was on a back road in vt and there were no other cars on the road. It was also very difficult to get the car completely off of the road because it would not run at all. I could not move it on my own.
I drive a Volvo V70xcse. At times the car does not accelerate properly. The problem is most evident on highway driving. This morning I heard about an investigation into Volvo wagons stalling. I am concerned about my vehicle.
As I was driving the engine would momentarily loose power, then resume & the ets light would come on. The ets light went out after a while. I reported this to my service people and was told that this was an intermittent problem and to bring it in when the light stayed on. This happened approximately 10 times and the last time it happened I had just gotten onto the expressway and the car lost power. I was in the middle of fast moving traffic and the car would not move. Many cars had to swerve around me causing a grave traffic hazard. I was very lucky that no one hit my car and possibly causing serious injury. I called for a tow truck and after waiting about 15 minutes I decided to try and start my , the ets light was still on. Fortunately the engine had regained power and I was able to drive off the expressway and bring it to be serviced.
2 weeks ago my 2000 V70 xc abruptly loss acceleration power, where the vehicle could not go over 20 mph and then stalled which lost power steering ability while my wife was driving on the highway with my 2 young children. Luckily, she pulled over to the side of the highway and avoided an accident. She shut the car off and restarted with no apparent problem and drove the remainder of the way with her hazards on. The car had just been back from the Volvo dealer after dealing with another unrelated issue approx a week earlier. I drove the car to the Volvo dealer and experienced the same problem, but was driving cautiously. The dealer replaced the electronic throttle module which cost approx $1,000. 00. I previously had the same problem with a 1999 Volvo s80 t6, which I subsequently sold due to repeated attempts to fix the problem!!.
The consumer states: the etm light was coming on and the vehicle would lose power when this occurred. The consumer had to stop the vehicle and restart it. This would happen at all speeds. The consumer was the original owner of the vehicle. The consumer had not replaced the etm and had been told by the dealer that the etm was bad. (11/17/05).
Have experienced electronic throttle control module failure on our Volvo 2000 V70 xc. Part had to be replaced with only 85,000 miles on car.
I own a 2000 V70 xc Volvo. At approximately 56,000 miles the ets (electronic throttle system) light came on. Since then the car seems to have instances of acceleration hesitation. I am the second owner of the vehicle. I purchased it approximately three years ago with less than 30,000 miles from a private party. All required and recommended maintenance has been performed by the dealer or by trained Volvo mechanics on the recommended schedule by both me and the prior owner. I am aware that this appears to be a frequent problem with the 99-01 Volvo xcs. I have contacted the original dealer and received no satisfaction about replacing what clearly appears to be a defective part based on my prior experience with similar vehicles. The dealer said the problem could have a number of causes and that an electronic diagnostic test was necessary to identify the source. Given my understanding of other owners' experiences I requested that they perform the test at their expense ($70) in the interests of safety and to help Volvo better understand the cause of the problem. The dealer declined. My owner's manual does not discuss any required or recommended maintenance for the associated parts or system. I and the prior owner have always used the recommended quality of fuel (91 octane). I do view the potential failure of the ets as a significant safety risk based on the potential for failure at highway speeds and the rapid loss of speed in heavy traffic. Much of my driving of this car is on freeways with 75 mph speed limits and with heavy traffic volumes. From the currently available research it would appear that this is an issue for which Volvo should accept responsibility and provide appropriate replacement parts. Given the experience of others and the apparent safety risk this does not appear to be a "regular maintenance/parts simply wear out" situation.
The consumer owens a 2000 Volvo V70 xc and at 30,000 miles had to replace the throttle. Would try to accelerate and the car would not go, and then stalled. Had electrical problems. While on the freeway the car started shaking uncontrollably. The throttle was replaced, and the repairman told the consumer that they would have to replace the throttle again because it was defective. Since the car was fixed there was some hesitation . The consumer took the car to a Volvo specialist to have the repairs done. The consumer has not contacted the manufacturer.
Failure of electronic throttle module on 2000 Volvo V70 cross country. Hesitation was noticed and Volvo cleaned the throttle module, I was not charged. At approximately 60,000 the car would hesitate at low rpm and the etm was replaced at my charge.
Electronic throttle control (ets) failed - I had a loss of power and control the car is an V70 xc 2000 with 46000 k miles.
On 1/20/05, our 2000 Volvo V70 xc with 74215 miles on the odometer started to lose power, and run erratically. The ets light came on the dashboard. We managed to get it to a local import specialist about 2 miles away from the incident. Left us stranded in winchester without transportation. Told import specialist to inspect and clean the etm module, which they did. Said they couldn't replace it because of the programming issues. Cost us. $121. 85. Car worked without ets light coming on until 2/17/05. Took it to fairfax Volvo on 2/18/05. They replaced the etm module. There was 75005 miles on the odometer. Cost to us was $859. 66 parts and labor. Since then, the car has not had the ets light come on.
In January of 2005 the etm unit failed on our 2000 Volvo xc70. It ran erratically and stalled. Alan byer Volvo in syracuse replaced the etm part at a cost of $1100.
Etm (ets) on 2000 year model s70 (v70). Unit failed after modest use (74915 miles). Replaced at cost of $860. 13. This appears to be a widespread problem, and the manufacturer should own up to poor design. Please file complaint with the manufacturer.
The contact stated vehicle stalled/died, and lost power. Throttle control module was replaced.
Consumer notice the ets indicator light stay on through out travel, resulting vehicle hesitating . Consumer would shut engine off and restart to turn ets indicator lights off.
Driving 2000 make Volvo V70 on interstate at 65 mph. Ets and check engine warning lights come on. Car begins losing power, can't slow down or speed up. Finally steer to an exit ramp; car dies at bottom of exit ramp. No crashes, but major traffic jams. Car completely dead, needs to be towed. Viewing internet forums Volvo, ets warning light and electronic throttle system (ets) problems are a major occurrence and a huge safety issue, judging from the many close calls I've read about similar to mine. Dealer replacing the ets module. Did not care about my safety. This is a huge issue that Volvo needs to deal with. I and my daughter could have been killed, and others as well.
