1 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/18/2010

2 separate seat belt latches/catches on different seats have failed on my 2003 Volvo xc70 since March of 2009. In both instances, the problem was discovered and repaired under normal circumstances. There was no accident or collision associated with the failures. I find it very strange that 2 different seat belt catch assemblies would fail on the same car. I will be submitting separate complaints for each incident, as they happened on different dates to different parts. December 2010 - driver seat belt catch assembly did not work; seat belt would not connect. On December 22, 2010 dealer confirmed catch assembly not operating correctly and replaced with a new part - part #9191817. Seat belt has been working fine since repair. The repair was not covered under warranty or recall. I paid for the repair out of my own pocket. In the event of an accident, the results could have been fatal, if the proper repairs were not made.

2 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

There is only one door that owner can unlock with the key. Otherwise, the consumer must rely on the remote. The battery on our remote failed and the lock had been non-functioning for quite some time, since there is only one lock on the doors. A child was locked inside the car. We had to call a locksmith. To replace the remote (they fail frequently) it costs approximately $300 for the device. This is absolutely abusive.

3 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

Just got off work and I was on my way to pick up my children from their respective schools/daycare. There was a nine wheeler moving very slowly in front of me so the car in my rear decided to overtake me to his left and as soon as he did that my driver side door just flung open by itself. The knob on the door was still down(in lock position). I was so terrified because it felt like something disengaged in my car and the whole driver side door just came loose. I was very fortunate to catch it right away or else it could have been fatal cause speed limit was 45mph and folks were going 50 or more mph. Before driving my car that day, I locked all my doors from the inside so I was very baffled that a door can open itself( with the knob in a lock position) . I feel like the force of the car that overtook me did something to disengage my driver side door. I took the car to the dealership and they said there were no error codes coming out from the driver side door. But I am still not satisfied! what if my kids were inside the car and there door flung open? I called the customer care consultant for the maker of my car but the lady I spoke with was so rude beyond belief. Please help!!! I have dealt with a lot of cars and I have never experienced something like that in my whole like. There is always something about cars; whatever happens to a car while driving it everyday does not always show up once it gets to the dealership. Hopefully my ordeal will not be in vain! when this occurred my driver side glass was rolled down a little bit.

5 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/05/2001

While traveling at high speed on an interstate my car lost power completely. I was able to get to the shoulder safely and call Volvo roadside assistance. My car was towed to the nearest dealership where it sat for a month because the problem couldn't be determined. The car was returned to me. About six months later the same experience occurred, once again while traveling at a high speed on an interstate highway. The "problem" was fixed again. My car has been in and out of the dealership for various reasons for years. When I was finally fed up with it and decided to sell it, it needed more electrical work. The service manager at a dealership listened to the problems I had with the car over the years and felt that it warranted a call to the Volvo rep. I gave him all work orders which I have from the purchase date of the car. He was told by the Volvo rep that since all repair work had not been done at a Volvo dealership they couldn't help me. Normal work such as oil changes, etc. Were done by a mechanic who only works on saabs and Volvos. Upon looking for the names of Volvo execs that I could write a letter to I stumbled on a website about Volvo problems and people who were trying to hold the company accountable for mechanical failures of any type. I wrote to the individual who started the website and he suggested that I send my e-mail to stephen mchenry at NHTSA which I did. After trying for many days to do so and failing to connect because of some problem with the message trying to reach mr. Mchenry I just let it go. We need to sell the car because we can't afford to fix all that needs to be repaired. The problem is how do I sell a car that needs over a thousand dollars of work? I am forwarding the e-mail I tried to send to stephen mchenry to your e-mail address. What can I do? am I too late in reporting this? what do you advise me to do? thank you for your consideration. Susan k. Luxem.
