Information display on dash showed wagon rear door not closed. Subsequent inspection showed the door (gate) would not lock and/or latch at random intervals, particularly during cold weather (0 f). Trip to dealer resulted in the rear latch being replaced as defective. En route to the dealership another warning showed on the display that the third brake light was out. While at the dealership the wiring harness to the third tail light was diagnosed as defective and is scheduled for replacement.

1) when rear hatch door is opened in cold weather it fails to latch properly 2) rear hatch door fails to latch 3) Volvo dealer lubricated latch which fails to solve the problem. In addition, a recall for this exact problem exists, however, my VIN does not qualify.
There is a current recall on hatch door latches on 2000 Volvo V70's. I have a 2000 Volvo V70 xc and the Volvo people are telling me that there is not a recall on that vehicle. I called a local Volvo dealer today and they said that the two vehicles have the same latch system our latch is not working properly and our idiot light now comes on telling us the back latch is not shut when it is. I am nervous that the back hatch is going to open up when we are driving down the road.
Rear locking mechanism broke . Rear locking light illuminated, and lock was not locking completely. Consumer contacted the dealer. However, dealer did nothing to assist the consumer. Recall 00v239000 concerning tailgate locking mechanism was issued.
The tailgate lock mechanism on my 1998 V70xc wagon often fails to latch in cold weather. This as not been too big a problem here in arizona - typically occurring if the tailgate is opened in the occasional cold mornings - as the day warms up the mechanism usually always latchs correctly. Usually when it begins not to latch a little cleaning and lubricant would cure it for a while. This solution is now producing limited results, and not wanting to drive the kids to school with the possibility of their backpacks falling out of the back of the vehicle, I have decided to replace the latch. While searching the internet for replacement information, I came across numerous owner reports of occurrences of this failure, as well as a recall of the model year 2000 version of this vehicle for the same issue. I made a close inspection of the mechanical part of the latch, and it appears that the two rotating elements that form the catch & lock assembly are not well aligned (are not moving in the same plane), possibly due to the poor forming and/or assembly of the stamped and folded steel housing in which these two pieces are located. This mechanical problem is likely the reason that the cleaning/lubrication solution has always produced limited results. In all other functions (power lock/unlock, latch release, child lock, etc. ) the assembly works correctly, it is just the balky rotation of the locking catch that appears to be keeping the latch from operating properly. I called Volvo customer care to see if the 2000 model year recall for this problem had been extended to my year vehicle, but was told no. I believe the failure is due to an apparent design and/or manufacturing deficiency and not from just wear and tear. Due to the safety issue, I have replaced the latch assembly, though I will not be able to determine if this has corrected the problem until colder weather.

The tailgate locking mechanism was defective, it will not lock properly. Also, the inside panel was falling off. Currently, manufacturer issued a recall. However, this vehicle was not included due to VIN. Recall#00v239000.
The contact owns a 2000 Volvo V70. The contact stated that the tailgate failed to latch when closed. The dealer stated that the vehicle needed a new locking mechanism, but that her VIN was excluded from recall # 00v239000 (latches/locks/linkages:tailgate:latch). The current mileage is 82,000 and failure mileage was 32,000.
I was recently told my 2001 v79xc needed ball joints, then sway bars and someone else said struts!
also:
I have had the car diagnosed, the system reported throttle module errors and electircal or circuit problems; throttle module cleaned, then replaced; headlights replaced 3 times (wiring causes shorts); gas filter replaced two junes in a row gas propelled out of the tank back at me upon pumping (something about air intake line was clogged), the brackets underneath the car are totally rusted not stainless steel!
I had the cooling fan replaced, car overheated into the red!
I too have had little time to enjoy my car. The e brake sticks in the winter, because the coating on the lines/cables is cracked, broken/burned due to improper suspension. My sun roof, interior lights and rear hatch door works intermittently in cold weather. The glove compartment was rattling loudly and the dealer I bought it from tried to fix it and told me I had to live with it! of course another dealership fixed it outright. The seatbelt frequently sticks and doesnt take up the slack intermittently only to get shut in the drivers door frequently, when I just about think it has corrected itself. And, there is a strange draft on the front passenger side window that gets quite cold in the winter. The seal seems fine and its another problem no shop seems to know anything about.
