1 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 07/07/2025

Yesterday, while driving on highway, I received a tire pressure warning for all four tires. I filled all tires to the recommended 35psi. The warning went away. Today, after I parked my vehicle, I saw a “parking brake service required” message on my dash. The “park” indicator on my dash started flashing. Now, I’m worried about a brake failure. I only mentioned the tire pressure warning bc I’ve never had multiple error messages like this before.

3 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 10/26/2024

Around 10/26/2024 I purchased a 2021 Volvo Xc60 from carvana. Carvana sells vehicles with a 100 day limited warranty. The manufacturer warranty was expired at this time. Carvana states they do an inspection of the vehicle prior to delivery. When I received the vehicle, I noticed the steering wheel would vibrate hard when I came to a stop. I took the Volvo to the local Volvo dealership to perform a full multi-point inspection. They found that the brake pads were at 1-2 mm with warped rotors on the front wheels. The back wheels had 3 mm brake pads. I called carvana on 11/22/2024 to discuss the brake issue and inquired about the 100 day warranty to cover the brake repair because I was sold a very unsafe vehicle. I was told their warranty would not cover the cost to repair the brakes. I asked for the inspection report they did prior to delivering the Volvo. They will not release the inspection report to me. So I asked for the details of the inspection on the brakes. They told me their inspection showed front wheels with 6m on both and the rotors were at 29 (lf) and 28. 02 (rf). They told me the rear wheels had 6m on brake pads for both wheels and the rotors were 11 (lr) ad 11. 92 (rr). They could not tell me the date of the inspection. I trust the Volvo dealership to provide accurate information on their inspection. This is not a safe vehicle and should have the brakes replaced and carvana should pay for this cost. At this point, carvana is selling very dangerous and unsafe vehicles and declining to provide inspection reports. I ask for your help with contacting carvana and absolutely requiring them to repair and replace the brakes on the vehicle they sold me.

4 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 10/03/2024

When I had to slow down or suddenly stop because there were other cars in front of me, I. Stepped on the break, but it did not stop; maybe it slowed down a little, but the acceleration seemed to accelerate faster. I could hear the acceleration sound. I had to push the gear to stop. The car finally stopped. But I almost hit the front car. Similar occurrences happened when I came to a stop signal, which could have involved me in a serious accident, even fatal. I still drive the car because I have only one car. Most of the time, it works normally, but the problem occurs occasionally. I am scared, thinking it will happen again.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 06/02/2024

While slowing down and just about to make a turn into a private residence off of a highway, multiple indicator lights illuminated and audio warning "dinging" occurred for approximately 3 seconds. As I had already been slowly applying the brakes and starting to slightly turn the wheel towards the driveway when those warnings briefly came up, the moment the lights and sounds stopped, vehicle then maintained speed (while still on the brakes) and locked steering position it was at simultaneously. Having no control at that point, it continued until crashing into a wooden fence. Once at a complete stop, cabin lights and "dinging" activated as it acknowledged the impact. And although it was only going about 15 mph, seemingly to only have damage to the front passenger side bumper/headlight area, it would not shift into any gear or turn off. Not to mention that the front passenger side airbag(s), or any of them, deploy- seriously raised even more concerns as the main reason I purchased a Volvo was for their well known status of safety standards. Had this obvious electrical malfunction happened moments before at higher speed/steering straight ahead, it would've resulted in very serious injuries to myself and others while it speed through 2 intersections at a highway ramp just down the hill. Was towed to a local collision repair & auto body shop until progressive insurance took it to their damage assessor where it was declared a total loss. I've owned it for almost 3 years and always had weird inconsistent electrical "quirks"- nothing ever of serious concern though. Has spent a total of 4-5 months in the past 3 years at different Volvo dealerships and mechanics but no one could ever explain why different warnings would be displayed randomly for days-weeks, off/on for no apparent diagnostic reason, 12v power socket was the same way. . . Please investigate the electrical components that directly affect the operational use and control! extremely common & dangerous issue with these!.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 05/28/2024

The moon roof leaks and drains into the area of the electronic gateway. This causes the car to become inoperable, slowing it to a crawl, once in park it will not get out of park, and sometimes results in not being able to turn off the engine. Many error codes become displayed ranging from no parking brake available, esb not responding, check engine light, and others. According to user forums, this issue has been around since 2017 for many of the models and Volvo will do nothing to repair it or acknowledge it. I have paid $2250 so far and the vehicle is still unusable.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/05/2024

6/8/vehicle in shop for 30k warranty service. Front brake pads flagged yellow for wear. Recommendation they be addressed next visit at 40k miles. By 35k, brake pedal was vibrating and steering wheel shaking upon moderate braking. Made appt. With local dealer which required over a month wait. 1/5/dealer confirmed problem. Despite their own technical service bulletin tj36202. 2. 0, dated 4/25/23, which recommended warranty replacement of brake pads, the service writer, joe barber at Volvo of st. Louis, 7700 manchester rd. Refused to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Instead, he quoted me a complete front brake job, to include rotors and pads for $920. I declined. With over 50 years of driving experience, not once have I owned a vehicle with brake/rotor failure with so few actual miles driven (mostly highway). Dealer claims this is normal for Volvo cars. Supposedly, one of the safest cars made for many years. I filed a written complaint with the service mgr. When he sent me a customer satisfaction survey. No response. Also filed a complaint with Volvo north America in mahwah, NJ. They also quickly denied any responsibility, claiming normal wear and tear. Unable to upload documentation from my phone, but can do so by pc scan if allowed. Please advise.

8 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 08/18/2023

The automatic breaking system was deployed while backing up in a parking lot. There were no obstacles, either stationary or moving, that should have triggered the braking. We have had several other times when the brake "felt odd" during reverse. It becomes very stiff and hard to depress but still works.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 07/24/2023

Twice within two weeks the car was shifted into reverse and the brake became unresponsive. The car started moving backward, but the brake was not depressible. On one occasion, the car was shifted into drive, which then allowed the brake to be fully depressed. On the other occasion, the brake was pushed repeatedly until the car finally allowed it to be fully depressed after a few seconds of rolling backward.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 07/03/2023

I've lost the ability to brake on several occasions. The brake pedal simply could not be pressed in. After taking it to the dealer for repair, the advisor could not articulate what the issue or fix was, but indicated that this is a known issue. These vehicles should not be on the road if that is the case.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 06/13/2023

My car continued to move even with the brake pedal pressed, and collision avoidance systems did not turn on. This is very unsafe - a car that doesn’t respond when the driver brakes puts everyone else on the road in danger. The first time this happened was on Sep. 6, 2022. I was driving on the highway when the car in front of me stopped abruptly. I started to brake. The distance between our cars was large enough that I should have been able to stop safely, but my car continued to move. I was unable to stop the vehicle and crashed into the car in front of me. At the time, I thought it was my fault. Although there was damage to my car, luckily no one was injured. (this was resolved, and my car was repaired, with help from shelter insurance. ) on June 13, 2023, I was pulling up to a red light behind another vehicle. I stepped on the brakes and my car jolted to a stop (I had to push the pedal down very hard to get my car to start slowing down). Then my car began to move again, even though I had not released the brake pedal. It was moving at about 1-2 mph. My car got so close to the car in front of us that the parking sensors began to beep. We would have run into the stationary vehicle if I hadn’t put my car in neutral. When the light switched to green I put my car in drive again. At the next intersection the brakes were back to normal, and my car was driving as before. I had my car towed to the local Volvo dealership. After an inspection, I was told they hadn’t found anything wrong. I left my car at the dealership for further investigation, and was given a loaner. I don’t know if there is a connection, but both times this happened, I had been driving on the highway at high speeds (70 mph) for a few hours before trying to brake.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 04/20/2023

I have had 5 visits with problems with engine , braking sensors, and automatic braking incidents when no obstruction is noted. Propulsion system failure has occurred 3+ times and turtle mode has come on and limited my speed to 30 mpg. It has also started bouncing and shaking while in reverse. I am extremely concerned about the safety threats and lack of consistency when taking it to be repaired.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 04/04/2023

Since owning my Volvo Xc60 I have had to change my brakes and rotors 3 times. I first purchased my car in January 2020 and the model is a 2019. The brake issues that have occurred have been the brake pedal shaking excessively as well as concern that the car would not brake due to the brakes wearing down very quickly. This has also affected the brake safety that Volvo pride themselves on. Additionally I was asked to pay $600 for a recall that the dealership told me needed to be done for my safety and admitted that Volvo should be picking up the tab for this.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 03/30/2023

Got into my car, pulled out of a parking spot and approached a stop sign. The brakes suddenly became extremely mushy and the brake peddle went all the way to the floor. I didn't notice an issue when I pulled out of the parking spot. I was unable to continue driving as the brakes were not usable. I had the car towed to the dealer and they indicated the brake booster and vacuum pump failed due to "normal wear and tear". The vehicle was purchased at, and always maintained at our local Volvo dealer. Luckily no accident occurred.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 03/10/2023

While driving, lost power very suddenly. A turtle comes across the dash. My vehicle wouldn’t start for roughly 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes, it starts up, but the check engine light is on. Nervous that my car isn’t safe to drive, I contact corporate Volvo, since there is no information in the manual for what this means- they told me to contact my local. So I call them and they state it’s safe to drive and they could get me into the schedule 3 weeks out…. Then, I get to my appointment and they then tell me my brakes and rotators are completely shot at 42,000 miles.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 02/20/2023

Car was turned on and shifted in to reverse. Car was driven backwards and when attempted to stop the car the brake became non depressible and car was difficult to stop.

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/06/2023

On Friday, January 6, 2023, I left work in my 2023 Volvo Xc60 recharge. As I merged onto i26 nothing appeared out of the ordinary. As I began to speed up, my tire pressure monitoring system (tpms) alerted me to a low-pressure situation. I pulled to the side of the road and requested roadside assistance. The rear driver-side tire had a screw embedded in the tread. A plug was placed by roadside assistance, and I was told to proceed to the dealership for a new tire as the side wall had damage. About a mile from the dealership my tpms again began to alarm. I needed to be more familiar with my vehicle to troubleshoot the issue, so hendricks advised me to return. Hendricks again inspected the vehicle. They stated that the driver’s side tire had been over-inflated. I left the dealership to return home. As I was exiting i26 the tpms monitor again alarmed me. I was surprised to see that it stated that all the tires were low on pressure. I was a short distance from my destination, so I decided to proceed and investigate there as it was dark. At the restaurant, I looked at the tires, which looked perfectly fine and not over or under-inflated. After dinner, I left the restaurant approximately two miles from my house and decided to contact hendricks in the morning. Nothing was unusual about the car as I turned right into my development. One block into the development is a stop sign. At the stop sign, I turned left to go to my home. As I began to apply the brakes, the car started to alarm, “brake failure. ” I frantically pumped the brakes, and the car did not stop! it kept going straight right toward our community pool and lake! straight ahead of me is our community pool and a 300-acre lake (it is a retention pond but calling it that does not overinflate lot prices, so they call it a lake). I did not end up in an accident or the lake because I quickly “skidded” the car sideways.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 12/03/2022

At approximately 55,000 miles I started to experience intermittent heavy vibration at highway speeds. According to the Volvo technical journal this is a known issue called the ghost shaker. There we no warning lamps or car messages that displayed while the shaking occurred. Typically, the car would shake when above 45 mph, especially on interstate. While the ghost shaker is happening, it was very hard to control the vehicle and the only way to cease the shaking is to pull over and come to a complete stop. Sometimes this was not very safe, especially when you were on an interstate with limited shoulder space. This appears to be a known issue of Volvo, but since I was out of warranty, I had to cover the cost for the repair. I took my Xc60 into an independent repair shop and a new Volvo brand brake booster was installed. This appears to have rectified the situation and the shaking has stopped.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 11/30/2022

We recently took our 2020 Volvo Xc60 with approximately 20k miles into the dealership where it has received it's oil changes and had its service issues looked at since buying the vehicle new. During the inspection video, the technician indicated the rear brakes had approximately 10% life remaining while the front had approximately 90% life remaining in them. This seems extremely askew and is indicative of a problem. Under normal driving circumstances and 20k miles wear and tear, there is no reason other than a malfunctioning mechanical issue like the emergency brake not disengaging completely that this uneven wear should be occurring. This should not be the case in such a relatively new vehicle and could result in unknown excessive wear on the braking system causing premature brake failure. If we hadn't taken the vehicle in for it's routine oil change, we would not be aware of this safety concern.

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 11/11/2022

The vehicle is basically new and I have only had it a few months. It has already been with the dealer three times because of technical/computer/infotainment issues. The dealer had the vehicle for about a week on each occasion. Today, I started to break so I could turn the car around and park it in the parking lot. I was moving very slowly, as you would expect in such a case. However, the car didn't stop but instead lurched forward in full throttle causing me to crash into a breezeblock wall. The automatic warning system did not sound and the crash detection system never engaged. I haven't been in an accident for 30 years and was not distracted when this happened. If the vehicle hadn't already had issues, I would accept user error as the problem, however in light of the car's history, I have doubts.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 11/02/2022

The google/android (ihu) electrical system controls the entire car: brakes, engine, safety features, ac/heat, etc. It is unreliable after 4 repair attempts. Problems started date of delivery (9/6/22) & have been ongoing. The ones that directly affect safety are the auto braking activating without cause, blind spot warning missing motorcycles, lane keeping will pull car towards a hazard in middle of road when you swerve to avoid it and the google/android system in general malfunctioning. I live in south florida and I can assure you that air conditioning is a safety concern, especially in people like me who have medical conditions in which excessive heat exposure can result in an er visit. My ac has failed upon starting the car as well as following the rebooting of the google/android system. The rebooting of the system must be done whenever the system malfunctions & it is wise to pull off the road to do it because everything but engine shuts down during the procedure. I have had to do this several times sitting off the side of the road & the system still wasn't working. It is not safe to have to pull off road so frequently. The automatic braking was particularly frightening, as both I and the car in front of me were both slowing for a stoplight, there was at least 5 car lengths between us & the distance between us was not narrowing. My car suddenly braked. Had someone been close behind me they would likely have rear-ended my car. They might have also assumed I brake-checked them & reacted with anger. Requested Volvo corporate involvement for 4th repair attempt & ihu was replaced. System began malfunctioning again, but blind spot worked. The google system is apparently unstable, as the 2nd loaner car's backup camera & cross traffic warning froze & failed to alert. Dates: 9-6-22 to 1-25-23 (date they took car for repair try #5). About 4000 miles on it. Volvo says they can't replicate concerns. I have video of some malfunctions & sent to dealer.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 09/05/2022

For the last 18 months, when getting on or while driving on the interstate at speeds of 55 - 70 mph, the steering wheel vibrates and a vibration is felt throughout the vehicle. When braking a pulsation is felt in the brake pedal and the car shudders as it slows. I have taken it to the dealer and they cannot duplicate the issue. I've seen that other Volvo xc-60 have had similar issues with brakes/rotors.

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 08/25/2022

I brought the car to the Volvo dealer for my 20,000 miles service. They told me that the rear rotors and pads are worn and need to be replaced. The front brakes are fine. I think that this is a design flaw. No one expects the rear brakes to wear first, and certainly not after only 20,000 miles!.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/27/2022

Electrical emergency break do not function in steep slope, project message “the emergency break can hold vehicule weight” seriously that scare me.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/11/2022

I’ve taken the vehicle back to dealership several times and they say nothing is wrong with it. The steering wheel vibrates at high speeds or when backing into parking spaces. Loud noise when backing into parking spaces, possibly brakes or steering. Engines unusually loud when starting up. Windshield just spilt all the way across when car was sitting for 5 days in August, not from rocks on road. Vehicle has unusually low mileage of 16-18 mpg city & hyw driving. Brakes are noisy- I thought they were crack when I purchased last year. These happened on multiple dates of which your system doesn’t allow me to add.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 12/21/2021

2 incidents occurred during the week of christmas (1 before and 1 after) in which the rear auto brake engaged without warning or provocation. There were 0 obstacles, vehicles, or persons in the vicinity which would have required an alert or braking. The 1st occurred in a parking lot and the 2nd occurred when backing out of a private garage. In each instance, another adult aside from the driver witnessed the malfunction. 1 incident occurred in January in which the rear auto brake engaged without warning and without presence of obstacles, vehicles, or persons in the vicinity which would have warranted an alert or braking. At each incident, the words rear auto brake intervention or something similar appeared on the dashboard. The braking and screen message occurred with warning or any cause for the sudden and forceful automatic braking. After the 3rd incident, the owner found the option to disable the rear auto brake intervention feature but this needs to be done at each new drive. No accidents occurred. The owner took the car to the dealer's service department. The service department was unable to duplicate the issue nor were they able to find any record of the error in the vehicle's "black box. " the car remains with the service department due to subsequent issues experienced and reported on this site by the owner.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 10/24/2021

1. One day after getting car the rear rotors were defective and had to be replaced. 2. Second problem affected stop/start mechanism. Brought car in four times for this repair. First 3 times service department had no idea what was causing problem. Last time brought in for this problem a stop/start battery was replaced. 3. New most dangerous problem is that while driving car the dashboard display turned into a bright barcode (I took a picture if needed). Stoped car at red light and upon restarting car same problem existed. Went to restaurant and upon leaving 90 minutes later same problem exhausted. This morning when dealer came to pick up car display was working. My wife drives car and this last problem scared her very much and she is frightened to drive car not knowing when and if this, or other problems will again occur. You could not see the speed you were driving at nor how much gas was left. Also, this occurred at night and the light from the barcode display was so bright that it interfered with driving. Have other Volvo owners experienced this problem ? this car is a lemon. And only 16 months old.
