Front Suspension Coil Spring Problems of Volvo XC70

The contact owns a 2006 Volvo Xc70. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the front suspension springs fractured. The contact heard a loud clicking sound. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who confirmed the fracture of the suspension springs. The passenger’s side suspension springs were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

Mileage on this vehicle was 115k when this happened: my wife started to back the car straight out of our driveway (from a stopped position, in reverse gear) when she heard a loud bang which came from the drivers side front of the vehicle. She stopped the vehicle and placed it in park. After removing the left front wheel, I discovered that the suspension coil (or spring) as part of the macpherson strut assembly, had snapped in two at the lower end. The broken off part of the spring was sitting on the lower control arm, while the other part was still surrounding the strut. That part of the spring was responsible for slashing the tire when it failed. We were thankful that this happened on our driveway and not going down the highway at a high rate of speed. But we were also astounded that such a catastrophic failure of a suspension part like this would occur in the first place. There were no recalls that we were aware of and nothing in the service schedule about replacing these springs at the given mileage.

Both front coil springs broke while going straight at low speed. Vehicle is not used off road. Repair required strut replacement. Dealer said this is a very common problem for Volvo. This is a major safety hazard. Why is there no recall?.

While my car was parked inside my garage there was a sudden "bang". The following morning I discovered while backing out of garage that the driver side coil spring had broken. Had I been driving while this happened it would have resulted in the shredding of the front driver side tire possibly resulting in a severe accident. The reason I own Volvo is principally dye to it's reputation for safety. In fact, Volvo uses the term safety in all it's advertising. This is a grave flaw and I ask NHTSA to investigate weather this is a common flaw in the 2004 Volvo Xc70 and other Volvo's with this coil spring.

Loud rattle noise front driver's side. I was on my way for service for the 110,000 checkup. My mechanic said it was the front coil spring that let go. He said he has had 9 other cars in the shop in the past 2 weeks with the identical problem. It is a safety issue because had I been on the highway and the coil spring let go, it could have blown the tire or loss of steering control.

Front driver side suspension spring coil broke, probably due to corrosion! if this was when the car was driven it would have probably ripped the tire and resulted in a very serious accident. This is 7 years old Volvo in as new condition.

2004 Volvo Xc70: I was pulling out of my garage and immediately heard a grinding sound. I then heard a whooshing sound. The front passenger side spring coil cracked and punctured (and ruined) a four week old tire. There was no warning that this was going to happen. I was lucky that I wasn't on the highway because I would have had a sudden tire blowout. Subaru had this problem with spring coils and had a recall to install shield to protect tire.

My 2001 Volvo Xc70 wagon had the coil spring snap on the driver's side front side. My wife was driving when she heard a loud noise in the front end of the vehicle. I have checked online at Volvo repair sites and it appears this is a fairly common problem with this model car. It is a great concern to me as believe it is a potentially serious safety issue since the broken spring a directly above the front tire, which could cause it to puncture at high speed driving. Could you please investigate this issue and hopefully avoid someone having this happen, causing a punctured tire and potential serious accident. If possible could you let me know if this is a wide spread problem that Volvo should be made aware of. Thank you!.

With 100,100 miles on the 2001 Volvo xc, the dealer had replaced front strut due to wear. Picked the car up and drove the car ~3 miles home. Left front coil spring broke turning the car around in the driveway the next morning.

Took the car in to replace tires(front tires prematurely worn down) the mechanic noticed broken strut coil spring and suggested manufacturer defect since normal should not broke the spring, especially a car designed for off road use. I had to replace the springs.

Noticed rubbing noise coming from front left wheel well especially when making right turn. Took to service station, they noticed broken strut coil spring and suggested manufacturer defect. Took to Volvo dealership and they remarked a pothole must have been hit to create damage. Had third opinion, no way to create the break in spring during normal driving conditions. Having both coils replaced to be safe.

We had just driven about 200 miles on the highway and pulled into our hotel parking lot. The car was in perfectly fine working order with no indication of a problem. When we returned to the car to go out, it made a scraping clunking, sound from the front driver's side wheel when we moved or turned the wheel. We managed to get it to a nearby repair shop where it was determined that the front driver's side coil spring had snapped while it was parked in the hotel parking lot. The coil was replaced.

Front driver coil spring broke. The front driver side coil spring broke off my 2001 Volvo Xc70. The coil spring just split and you could hear a loud clacking noise. The coil spring could have ruptured my tire but thankfully my family and I were ok. After further research, it turns out there have been a lot of forums that complain about the coil spring snapping on the driver side of the Volvo xc series. Ford already had called a recall on their springs due to corrosion and I'm wondering if Volvo received the shipment. It is very dangerous situation and my family could have been seriously injured. I have photos of the snapped spring if they could provide any assistance.

The passenger side front coil spring on our 2001 Volvo Xc70 snapped. The car had been sitting in our garage for two weeks and when I backed it out I heard this awful noise from the front end. Upon examination the broken spring was discovered. Drove slowly to garage where both springs and seats were replaced due to indications of corrosion and to ensure spring rates would be the same. If this had occurred at highway speeds the consequences could have been serious as the springs are very close to the tires. The car had 117,000 km on it at the time,had only been driven on pavement,all services done and meticulously maintained. The contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc70. The contact heard a loud banging on the front driver's side of the vehicle while driving in reverse. The front driver's side suspension coil spring failed. The vehicle was driven to the repair shop and they removed the front struts. They reassembled the front strut assembly with new, original Volvo manufactured front struts, mounts, bushings, and springs. The dealer reinstalled the front strut assembly and then test drove the vehicle to makupdated 02-23-09 sure it was able to be driven. The failure mileage was 97,791. Updated 02/24/09.

Broken front coil springs on both the driver and passenger sides. Occurred in two separate incidents and both incidents occurred while pulling straight out of the garage. The broken coil spring on the passenger side (1st incident) punctured the front tire. The 2nd incident occurred aprrox 3 month later, where the driver side coil spring broke. This was identify immediately and no damage to the tire occurred. The coil spring was replaced in both cases.

The driver side front coil spring on our 2001 Volvo Xc70 snapped either while the car was driven into the driveway or while sitting overnight. Backing the car out of the driveway into a dip produced a noise that indicated a serious problem with the front suspension. Upon examining the front suspension I discovered the broken coil spring. The lower portion of the springs powder coat had peeled and the spring had a coating of rust on the lower coil. The broken edges of the spring showed signs of rust penetrating into the interior metal of the spring, suggesting that the spring may have been cracked for some time before failing. Since the spring is very close to the tire there could have been a serious situation if the broken edge of the spring had contacted the tire at high speed. When I examined the unbroken passenger side spring I felt roughness under the powder coating along the lower part of the spring, suggesting that corrosion is also taking place in the same area on that spring. Both front coil springs are going to be replaced. I have the broken spring as well as photos if they can be of any assistance.
