1 Navigational (global Positioning System) Gps problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/16/2025

I am reporting a safety defect related to the vehicle connectivity module (vcm) in my 2017 Volvo Xc90. The vcm is critical for emergency communications, including automatic crash notification and location sharing with emergency responders. This function is vital for occupant safety in the event of an accident. My vcm was serviced at an authorized Volvo dealer in natick, MA in December 2024 due to intermittent connectivity issues. Despite this recent service, the vcm completely failed in mid-April 2025. When the module fails, the vehicle loses the ability to automatically contact emergency services and transmit its location after a crash, significantly increasing the risk of delayed or absent emergency response. I am aware that Volvo previously issued safety recall r39917 for 2017–2019 Xc90s regarding vcm software errors that could prevent gps location from being sent to emergency personnel. Volvo has refused to cover the repair, even though the failure directly impacts a safety-critical system that was already subject to a recall. This failure compromises the car’s core safety promise and leaves occupants at risk in emergencies. I urge NHTSA to investigate ongoing vcm failures in these vehicles, as the repairs have not resolved all safety concerns. Volvo should be required to address these failures to ensure driver and passenger safety.

2 Navigational (global Positioning System) Gps problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/14/2024

The contact owns a 2016 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the oil light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 19v308000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that an oil change was needed. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, who informed the contact that the vehicle was consuming oil and informed the contact about an oil consumption test. The contact was informed that a spark plug had exploded in the engine. The engine was replaced. The contact noticed that water was entering inside the vehicle. There was water dripping on the entertainment center, and the pixels were half out. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the infotainment screen needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. While driving at unknown speeds, the brakes became inoperable. While at a car wash, the fenders detached. After driving for several hours, the turn off engine message was displayed. The contact added additional coolant, but the coolant depleted quickly. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine line had split open. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and opened a case but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

4 Navigational (global Positioning System) Gps problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

Driving on 210-west, my car lost power without warning. The fuel pump had been replaced on Jan. 26, 2010, to correct the strong smell of gasoline inside and outside of the car. Other problems have been replacing the brake pads twice, replacing the abs, faulty gps and cd player, front passenger door automatic lock needs motor replaced, sloshing sound of water heard inside the car after rain.
