I was driving my 2017 Volvo Xc90 t6 inscription when a ‘coolant low’ warning appeared. I immediately pulled over and the car began to smoke. I was unaware what to do so I called my husband and he told me to pop my hood. With 1. 5 minutes of pulling over I open my door to find the lack to pop the hood and someone started yelling at me to get out. I looked up and the smoke had changed from white to brown- I exited the vehicle and called 911- within approximately 5 minutes, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames and was a total loss. The vehicle had been regularly maintained and to my knowledge, had no open recalls applicable at the time. After the fire, I became aware of a prior Xc90 recall involving a coolant hose leak and fire risk. I understand that recall may not list my exact model year. I’m not claiming a specific cause, but due to the coolant warning preceding the fire, believe the circumstances warrant investigation. I was able to exit safely and no one was injured, but given how rapidly the fire developed, I’m concerned about the potential risk to others.

On or about July 6, 2026, I observed water entering the passenger compartment of my 2024 Volvo Xc90 at the right rear interior quarter trim panel, visible on opening the tailgate. I reported this to Volvo car USA customer care by telephone the same day and was told the vehicle would need to be brought to an authorized dealer. On July 29, 2026, while I was driving the vehicle on a highway, water dripped from the overhead panel above the rearview mirror, surrounding the interior lights, onto me. After parking, I inspected the vehicle and found, the same day, water again entering at the right rear interior quarter trim panel and, on removing the cargo floor panel, standing water in the spare wheel well together with wet carpet on the cargo floor panel and wet carpet backing and insulation. Water is entering the vehicle at more than one location. I am concerned about water reaching electrical components, including the battery and fuse box compartments located in the cargo area, and about mold in the carpet and insulation. The vehicle has approximately 31,151 miles and was purchased as a Volvo certified pre-owned vehicle in September 2025. It is scheduled for service at an authorized Volvo dealer on July 31, 2026. The bright trim strip along the front edge of the shifter panel in the center console of my 2024 Volvo Xc90 has fractured in two places, leaving an exposed jagged edge adjacent to the cupholders. That edge lacerated my fingertip on July 14, 2026 and again on July 25, 2026. On both occasions I was driving the vehicle on a highway and was reaching for a cup in the cupholder, which is ordinary use. The injury bled heavily both times and was a significant distraction while I was operating the vehicle at highway speed. Neither injury required medical treatment. The panel has never been removed, pried, or struck, and no object has been dropped on it. The vehicle has approximately 31,151 miles and was purchased as a Volvo certified pre-owned vehicle in September 2025. It is scheduled for service at an authorized Volvo dealer on July 31, 2026. The ac evaporator has a leak. I am reporting as this is a well known issue on the Volvo's, especially the 2016 Xc90 which has a large amount of issues that cause issues of safety and undue amount of financial burden on owners who operate the vehicle in normal conditions. I have been told by the dealer after they repaired a another issue of the engine (8 times this vehcile has been in for repair on engine issues that are due to a block issue) the ac evaporator is well known by Volvo to be poorly designed and manufatcurered where they last under ten years. I have asked dealers and mechainc shops who see dozens a week of these repairs needed. The avergae cost I have been quote is $4000 for repair and the Volvo service dealer I could told me, these keep the shop going. There is no way that this is not a issue to the public that puts a undue burden to owners, one that Volvo hq in USA acknowledges is a issue but is not required to do anything.

2017 Volvo Xc90 manufacturing defect where panoramic sunroof drainage network fails under normal rain, pooling water directly in the floorboard channels over safety module networks and wire harnesses. Water infiltration caused a catastrophic short-circuit of the floorboard-mounted amplifier while driving. This forced the audio system to emit an un-modulated, maximum-volume electronic blast through the cabin, causing severe driver distraction and documented temporary acute acoustic trauma/ear injuries to myself and my young child. Progressive electronic oxidation from ongoing water intrusion has since caused systemic failures of critical safety electronics. This includes spontaneous, unprompted activations of the automated emergency sos calling network and dangerous operational delays in the backup camera engaging. Dealership service personnel inspected the vehicle and explicitly warned that the water-logged electrical networks are heavily compromised and at imminent risk of a complete blackout while in motion, posing a severe threat of sudden loss of power steering, braking, and propulsion on the highway. Rain is currently actively dripping from the interior ceiling onto passenger cabin components. This platform-wide engineering flaw creates an active fire, electrical, and crash hazard.

The air conditioning evaporator core has been widely known to freeze and crack on 2016-2021 models of the Xc90 which sends toxic refrigerant smell thru the vents. This is a big safety hazard and should be recalled. Volvo knows about this but only does a goodwill repair to loyal customers who purchased the vehicle new and have all service records from the dealership. This is a $4000 repair for everyone else for a manufacturer defect and safety issue.

This is my 2nd Volvo Xc90. Both models have turbo issues that is costly repairs. Volvo dealership also stated that turbo repairs usually are an issue in Volvo. My first Volvo was 2016 which had a turbo issue. Now my 2022 is now in shop due to turbo and oil spills on inside. There should be a recall.

The rear a/c evaporator coil has failed, leaking uv dyed green oil into the main battery pan. The a/c vents in the car in the driver and middle rows are now blowing hot air. This is a very commonly known problem with Volvo spa Xc90s from 2016-2021. It’s incredibly expensive to repair($3500 +). There should be a recall to replace/repair this problem in these relatively new and expensive cars.

Driving on highway. Selected another route on map, but the screen lagged in response. Screen then went dark, shut off electronics on dashboard and infotainment, and ac turned off; seems like car also slowed down. Able to pull over and wait for everything to restart. Safety put at risk: sudden change in environment causing attention to shift to safely getting off road incase car shut off entirely. Previously: infotainment has been off at start-up before; never had this problem while driving, though. One incident in drive-thru where I pressed infotainment and whole car shut off. Vehicle has been taken to dealership services for annual and as needed, codes have been ran extensively, and no faults have been found. The concerning incident occurred an hour ago so I have not brought to dealership yet, but seeing online that the problem is not just with my vehicle.

My 2020 Volvo Xc90 plug-in hybrid is covered by recall 25v-179 (Volvo r10312) for high-voltage battery cell modules that may short circuit and catch fire when fully charged and parked. On June 3, 2025, Volvo cars arrowhead performed the recall inspection and software update (invoice 239958) and recorded “battery cell check ok no faults. ” the vehicle was returned to us as remedied. On December 17, 2025, the same dealer serviced the vehicle (invoice 244765) without flagging any open recall issue. On may 4, 2026, the high-voltage battery cell module failed and the system indicated "hybrid system failure. " it was towed to the dealer, which diagnosed a failed cell module. Before it was towed, we drove and charged the vehicle at our home for about a week, with our children in the house. That is the exact scenario the recall warns about. The vehicle has been at the dealer for more than five months waiting for a replacement module, with no expected delivery date. On October 14, 2026, the dealer told us in writing that Volvo cars USA had approved a software update as the “permanent fix,” that the failed cell module will remain in the vehicle, and that the vehicle can be used as designed. They are returning it to us on October 16, 2026. The remedy Volvo filed with NHTSA for this recall says dealers will inspect and replace the high-voltage battery module as necessary, and update the software to monitor the battery. Our module has been confirmed as failed, yet Volvo is leaving it in place and relying on software alone. The earlier inspection-and-software remedy on this same vehicle did not prevent the failure. I am asking NHTSA to review: whether leaving a confirmed-failed cell module in place, with only a software update, is an authorized remedy under 25v-179. Whether the June 2025 inspection method reliably identifies defective modules. Whether other owners are being given the same software-only “remedy” because of a parts shortage.

2018 Volvo Xc90, VIN [xxx] , 54,618 miles. Original owner. All service performed exclusively at Volvo cars west houston (same dealer, all three failures). Volvo technical journal tj 34648. 1. 2, titled "prior approval - lack of airflow causing poor cabin cooling," is classified as a product fix and explicitly lists the 2018 Xc90 as an affected vehicle. This tj required the dealer to submit a prior approval report to Volvo corporate when installing the resistor fix. At 12,017 miles (August 2020), the dealer installed the evaporator resistor per tj 34648. 1. 2, part no. 32241228, under vst operation 98734-2 — meaning Volvo corporate has documentation of this vehicle's evaporator vulnerability on file since 2020. At 15,930 miles (March 2021), the ac compressor failed and was replaced under warranty, consistent with refrigerant starvation from the same underlying evaporator leak. The evaporator has now failed completely at 54,618 miles despite Volvo's own corrective measure being applied at 12,017 miles. The current failure (April 2026) includes a confirmed front evaporator refrigerant leak and ac discharge hose leak, documented by dealer borescope inspection showing corrosion on the evaporator fins and visual evidence of refrigerant oil residue at the discharge hose fitting. Dealer repair estimate is $4,406. This is a documented pattern failure across 2016-2018 Volvo Xc90 models. I was driving when a turtle popped up on my dashboard I pulled over to google what that meant and popped the hood cause I seen a little smoke within 3 sec the car busted in flames I ran back and grab my daughter out the back seat we were almost locked in due to the car melting the wire and flames started coming inside the car.

A software update (version 5. 0. 5) was complete on my 2024 Volvo Xc90 at the end of March. The software was marketed in emails to have an enhanced infotainment display to support a safer experience. Since the upgrade, I have experienced the opposite of enhanced safety. My infotainment screen and dash displays randomly go black and it restarts itself several times a day while driving. In addition to that, the blinkers malfunction when this happens. The most important safety issue is navigation outage on the displays. The inability to rely on the google maps navigation within Volvo, or within carplay, results in my having to use my phone to input and view directions, taking my eyes off the road. It also disables to cameras when I need them. On 3/31 I emailed my sales rep asking if he'd heard of others having this complaint, he did not appear to be aware and asked me to make an appt with service center. I brought the car to Volvo on 4/2 where the service check-in employees did mention they were seeing many cars coming in with the same concerns. The technician was not able to confirm the issue but said they would contact corporate and let me know of a response, which was 15 days ago. According to online searches, multiple other Volvo drivers are experiencing the same. Since we have become so dependent on the driver assistance features, and this issue is now occurring, I have become a nervous driver in a brand of car that is marketed as one of the safest vehicles in the world. I get worried that my bliss or lane assistance or other driver assisted features will malfunction as well. No notifications from Volvo have been received thus far. I have not contacted the corporate offices of Volvo yet. Please take this safety issue seriously.

Vcm and rearview camera glitching not working, can cause crashes. Everything was checked for voltage and works properly. It seems like it is a system infotainment issue for 2017 Volvo Xc90.

On call service/ vcm module stopped working previous recalls on these types of vehicles.

My car started smoking on the road, I parked it. It smoked, then it caught on fire.

Our rear backup camera is no longer working. I see that other years have been recalled for the same issue, but our 2021 Xc90 is not covered under the recall. It seems to be the same issue.

Piston rings inside the engine failed due to a known oil consumption issue with this model vehicle. The engine failed while the car was driving 85 mph and consequently slowed down to 15mph on the highway, leaving the owner of the car stranded alone on the highway. Volvo has a known fix for this issue and there was a class action lawsuit for it, but since it was settled, there was no recall. This is, in fact, a dangerous issue that is preventable. Additionally, the sunroof drains also leak. Water frequently leaks down the a-pillar directly onto the central electronic module (cem) causing unsafe electrical issues and potential engine failure. This was a known issue on other models, but it is also present in this model vehicle. When I tried to fix this under a warranty contract, I was denied by the certified repair shops.

While driving the vehicle under normal conditions, a sudden electrical fire occurred, requiring immediate evacuation. The vehicle was pulled over safely and the driver exited before the fire escalated. The fire department responded and the vehicle was declared a total loss due to fire damage. The failure is believed to have originated from an electrical short involving the climate control/defroster system. The affected wiring and components were destroyed by the fire and are not available for inspection. The day prior to the fire, the fuse controlling both the climate control system and the instrument cluster blew twice when the defroster was activated. The fuse was replaced, and the defroster was not used again. At the time of the fire, the defroster systems was not operating. There were no warning lights or alerts immediately prior to the fire. The fire occurred while the vehicle was in motion, creating a serious safety risk to the occupant and surrounding traffic. The incident has not been reproduced or inspected by a dealer. The vehicle was inspected by the fire department. No manufacturer inspection has occurred.

The rear door latch/lock actuators on my 2017 Volvo Xc90 fail to latch in cold temperatures, making the vehicle undrivable and unsafe. The doors may appear closed but are not secure, creating a serious risk to the driver, passengers, and others on the road; I rely on this vehicle daily to transport my children. The issue has worsened over multiple winters, and on one occasion the doors remained frozen for about four hours, preventing safe travel to work and school. A local independent garage has confirmed this is a known issue affecting Xc90 models in cold-weather climates and identified the likely cause as failing or frozen actuators. This can be confirmed online with a simple google issue that it is a sever and prevalent safety issue. Especially with children riding int he back seats. The vehicle has been run with remote start and for extended periods in attempts to resolve the issue, and temporary measures like sprays or lubricants have not helped. The car had to run for 4 hours to be operable and it was only 10 degrees out. The problem has no warning lamps or messages and occurs only in cold weather. The system is available for inspection upon request.

The aluminum trim on the center console of my 2022 Volvo Xc90 has started peeling. The exposed edges are sharp and cut my fingers whenever I move my hands near the console. This issue is very common among this model and presents a serious safety hazard during normal vehicle use.

Vehicle: 2017 Volvo xc-90 component: door latch / door lock mechanism both passenger-side door latches failed within approximately three weeks of each other due to internal corrosion/rust, as confirmed by Volvo diagnostics. The affected doors cannot be opened from inside or outside, including by key fob or interior door controls. The vehicle has been well maintained, garage kept, and has not been exposed to flooding. Volvo cars USA and an authorized dealership acknowledged the failures; however, Volvo declined assistance. Because this involves a critical safety component and occurred on multiple doors in close succession, I believe this represents a design or material defect, not normal wear, and warrants formal investigation.

To whom it may concern, I am submitting this complaint to report a repeated and unresolved safety defect in my leased Volvo vehicle involving rear passenger door lock failure, which has resulted in minor children being trapped inside the vehicle on multiple occasions vehicle safety issue: the left rear passenger door fails to open from both inside and outside, despite the child lock not being engaged. This creates a serious safety risk, particularly during emergencies when occupants must exit the vehicle quickly. While driving my 2018 Volvo Xc90 at approximately 50 miles per hour, the right rear door suddenly swung open even though it appeared fully closed. Speed limit indicator incorrect (example: indicator shows 80 mph speed limit on a small road in alabama where it should be 35 mph; also, there is no road in alabama greater than 75mph. ) lane departure assist has a hard time identifying lanes in some construction zones (this is extremely dangerous as the car is constantly trying to over-correct me) - infotainment system randomly reboots, presents a problem mostly when navigating - I have reported this issue way too many times and the infotainment system has been replaced once. Rear camera comes on randomly, often when no car or object is near infotainment system touch sensitivity is unacceptable.

While the vehicle was parked, the trunk opened and the alarm sounded. Using the buttons on the trunk, I shut the trunk and locked the car. A few moments later, the trunk opened and the alarm sounded again. This continued for 40 minutes. Today, if I place a battery in the main black key fob, the trunk will open with the car running. I have an appointment next week at the dealer, however, most correspondence with Volvo has been by phone during the time it occurred. Both key fobs are not recognized by the vehicle unless specifically placed in a vertical direction in the cup holder. While driving, I receive messages that the key is not detected (although, I understand the car should not shut off while running after started and this has not occurred thankfully. ). I will provide further documentation once available but want to report in case others experience this issue.

I am writing to formally a repeated mechanical failure involving the hvac evaporator systems in two Volvo vehicles that I purchased within a few months of each other. The vehicles involved are: • 2019 Volvo Xc90 t6 momentum VIN: [xxx] purchased: November 2024 • 2020 Volvo xc60 t5 momentum purchased: January 2025 within a six months apart, both vehicles suffered complete air conditioning system failure due to large evaporator leaks. In total, three evaporators have now been confirmed as leaking across these two vehicles. The 2020 xc60 experienced evaporator failure in may 2025 and required full evaporator replacement under its cpo warranty. The 2019 Xc90 subsequently developed the same issue. After multiple independent inspections and a full diagnostic performed by Volvo, they have confirmed that both the front and rear evaporators were leaking. The total repair estimate exceeds seven thousand dollars. Despite the statistical improbability of two vehicles purchased months apart suffering identical hvac system failures within months of ownership, Volvo cars north America denied my goodwill assistance request. The denial was based solely on the fact that a prior owner of the Xc90 had previously received an unrelated goodwill repair. I was not informed of this at the time of purchase and had no connection to that prior claim. I then filed a complaint with the bbb against Volvo cars north America. Volvo did not respond at all. The bbb has now formally closed the case and recorded that Volvo failed to respond to the complaint. I have acted in good faith at every step. I paid for diagnostics. I provided complete documentation. I pursued proper escalation channels. I sought resolution through the bbb. Volvo has remained silent. This is not an isolated service matter. It reflects a potential systemic defect affecting multiple Volvo platforms and model years. The repeated evaporator failures raise serious concerns as far us intaking large freon amounts. The camera system when backing up becomes unavailable intermittently. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. System has been updated and restarted but it fails to fix the issue. When it happens it states camera unavailable and service required. Shutting off the vehicle and restarting multiple times sometimes corrects it. Automotive dealer said there is no issue with it. We have pictures of when it happens and the vehicle is available for inspection.

As I was driving, the coolant low warning came on. Luckily I was able to pull over safely at a nearby gas station. I found that the coolant expansion tank was empty. The coolant was leaking from the plastic connector on the bleeder hose and was pooling on the top of the engine. There is a recall on 2016 vehicles for this (Volvo campaign r29936) and looks like many are having same issue on 2017 models also. My problem was exactly as described, the part broke, coolant squirts out all over hot engine parts, system coolant level rapidly depletes. Fortunately, this happened in place that allowed safe stopping.

On November 5, 2025, while driving my 2017 Volvo Xc90, I experienced a sudden and dangerous loss of braking assist. When I pressed the brake pedal, I heard a loud hissing noise coming from under the dashboard, and the car would not stop. The brake would not work and the vehicle would not slow or stop unless I stood up and used my full body weight to press it. A licensed mechanic inspected the vehicle and confirmed this is consistent with loss of vacuum pressure from the brake booster/failure of the vacuum brake booster, the component that provides power assist to the braking system. The booster, brake pump, hose from booster to pump and brake pedal clip were replaced, with an estimated cost of $2,858. The mechanic also advised that this failure is not uncommon in Volvo Xc90 models. After the incident, I researched similar complaints and found numerous reports on NHTSA and [xxx] describing **identical symptoms—hard brake pedal and hissing sound due to vacuum booster failure—* the 2016–2019 Xc90. The sunroof has leaked pouring water into the car. October 29, 2025 this is the second time this has occurred. First flood was January 3, 2023. Volvo covered the first repair done by a Volvo dealership. The current estimate to repair is $13,000 by the Volvo dealer. They have the car. The electronics have not been checked yet or are part of the estimate. It is unsafe to drive a car if the electronics may fail. I have filed a claim with Volvo and to date (42 days) there is no resolution. I cannot drive a car that fills with water when it rains. My daughter has a severe heart defect and cannot be in a car with mold and mildew.

My 2023 Volvo Xc90 was recalled for issues with the backup camera. Software update was installed twice without success. Finally camera was replaced. No success either.

My car is a 2022 Volvo hybrid t8, 6-passenger Xc90. I purchased the SUV in August of 2023 as a "certified pre-owned" vehicle with only 17,923 miles on it at the time of purchase. This SUV has been fine until within the last two to three months (July-sept. 2025). Now, in sept. Of 2025, my SUV only has 30,795 miles and we have had it serviced regularly, as required, and taken care of it as responsible vehicle owners. Beginning around June or July of 2025, I began seeing the "check engine" light, so I called the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and took it in for servicing. After a day, they said it was fixed and that it was a blown fuse or two, and it was good to go. Not even 3 weeks to a month later, the "check engine" light came on again. I called and took it back to the dealership. Same story, after less than a day they called me back after fixing something else (don't remember off the top of my head what they said it was, but it was allegedly minor). Now, about 3 days ago, sept. Of 2025, I began seeing the "check engine" light again, so for the 3rd time in less than 3 months I arranged for it to be serviced by the dealership again on 9/30. A day later, another "propulsion system/maintenance required!!!" light came on as well, so I called to get servicing sooner because obviously the message is scary. I was told to bring it in, they would "work me in" but had no loaners I could use to get to and from work. So, at that point, I got my husband involved and now no one from the dealership is returning either of our calls, and I'm being told there is no recall on my car, even though a simple google search reveals there is a recall on my same make/model/year SUV. I'm getting the same messages people got about the recall, so no clue why my vehicle isn't considered as part of the recall when I am having the same issues as the recalled vehicles are having. I am beyond frustrated and ready to dump this SUV if they are unable to properly repair it!!!!!.

There was always an issue with the car software. On several occasions while driving the entire screen will black out. I would need to pull over immediately so that the screen can be reset manually. Other times the screen is on, but there is no sound, such as my signal lights when switched to left or right will not have any sound, just blinking. Other times, when I back up the car, the cameras will blackout making it impossible to know if there are cars approaching or any pedestrians behind the car. This has happened on multiple occasions since I took the car on oct 15 2023. These issues were brought to the attention of the Volvo dealership where the car is leased, but the problem was never fixed.
