I am reporting a failure of the fuel pump system in my Volvo vehicle, which currently has approximately 60,000 miles. The failed component is available for inspection upon request. The issue was confirmed by an authorized Volvo dealership, which diagnosed the fuel pump as defective and requiring replacement. The problem has been confirmed by the manufacturer’s authorized service center, and the vehicle has been inspected accordingly. No external factors or misuse contributed to this failure. It is my understanding that Volvo has issued recalls and/or acknowledged similar fuel pump defects in other vehicles of comparable models and years. Based on the nature of this failure and its alignment with known issues, I believe this vehicle should be evaluated for inclusion under an existing recall or be subject to further investigation. Given the safety implications of fuel system failures, I respectfully request that this issue be formally reviewed to determine whether a broader defect trend exists that could impact other vehicles. The failure occurred at relatively low mileage and under normal operating conditions, raising concern of a systemic defect rather than normal wear and tear.

Unintentional acceleration. First, I was in line at car wash proceeding slowly ahead as directed in line. Foot on accelerator lightly moving, when car surged rapidly hitting back end of Tesla about 6-8 ft ahead (2/26/26 12:30pm) impact strong enough to push Tesla into truck hitch damaging it front of it as well. Applied brake, but impact was too rapid. Second incident with my Volvo was a month later(3/22/26 about 10:30 am) and my husband was driving. . Made right turn on green light and started to accelerate when it revived and surged forward until applied brake. Dealer could not replicate. No codes but repair shop had to recalibrate after 1st incident and may have lost code on 1st incident(wreck). Now that insurance knows what happened, I don't know if they will intervene. Hopefully. No warnings went off or messages. Airbag did not deploy. I believe that this is an unintentional acceleration, especially occurring twice now. Dealership says car is safe and they will monitor. I guess it means when we have another incident. Hopefully not fatal to us or anyone else. Dealer says it is a transition from hybrid electric to gas. But I have had this car 4yrs10months and this never happened until now. And the transition never has thrown me back in my seat or had the engine rev. The battery was replaced last August because of bad cell and recall on it for fire hazard. Maybe this could have an affect. On first incident I was in shock so thought maybe in hit accelerator instead of break, but when second incident occurred and it was exactly like first except no collision. Thatshow I originally reported to insurance and police as my fault. But that's not true. Now I called insurance to report dual incidents, two different drivers with unintentional acceleration. Sr-1 filed.
On the morning of January 12, 2026, I attempted to unplug my 2023 Volvo Xc90 recharge (plug-in hybrid) from my home charging station in order to drive to an appointment. I had turned on the climate control remotely from the Volvo app while inside the house. When I went to unplug the vehicle, the charging connector was locked in the vehicle’s charging port and could not be removed. I contacted Volvo customer service, who instructed me to try several troubleshooting steps, including locking and unlocking the vehicle multiple times with the key fob and resetting the infotainment system. These steps did not resolve the issue. Because the charging plug remained locked, I was unable to use my vehicle and had to borrow a neighbor’s car, causing me to arrive late to a scheduled appointment. While away from home, I contacted my Volvo dealer, whose service representative advised me to use force to remove the plug, stating it would likely break the internal clip in the charging port. When I returned home several hours later and unlocked the vehicle, the charging plug released normally without any physical intervention. This suggests a software or electronic malfunction rather than a mechanical obstruction. The incident temporarily immobilized the vehicle and could pose a safety or reliability concern if it occurs in other situations. Furthermore, we have been experiencing intermittent issues with the infotainment system, including the backup cameras not coming on, random radio stations playing and complete blackout of the screen and/or flickering. The last software update was completed on Aug 15, 2025.

My vehicle was recalled for a faulty battery module. I turned the car into the dealer (palo alto Volvo in palo alto, CA) on December 18 and the dealer has not been able to provide any eta on repairs.
Supplemental to NHTSA complaint #11713668. This is a supplemental filing regarding the 2020 Volvo Xc90 t8 inscription, VIN [xxx] . The hybrid battery cell module failed in December 2025, disabling the vehicle's hybrid propulsion system, all-wheel drive, and electric-only mode. As of this filing, the vehicle has been without hybrid functionality for over four months. The replacement part remains unavailable. Since the original complaint, the owner initiated civil proceedings against Volvo car USA llc and Volvo car north America llc in the state court of gwinnett county, georgia (case no. [xxx]). Through that litigation, the following facts have been established as deemed admissions under georgia law, which neither defendant contested: 1. This vehicle is excluded from recall 25v-179, yet experienced a catastrophic hybrid battery cell module failure. 2. Battery failures in 2019-2022 Xc90 t8 vehicles are not exclusively caused by the "lg supplier process deviation" identified in recall 25v-179. 3. Volvo is aware of battery failures in 2019-2022 Xc90 t8 vehicles outside the recall 25v-179 population. 4. Volvo possesses internal engineering data showing the battery defect affects vehicles outside the population reported to NHTSA in recall 25v-179. 5. Volvo has not issued a recall for the specific failure mode affecting this vehicle. 6. Expanding recall 25v-179 to cover the full 2019-2022 Xc90 t8 population would cost Volvo tens of millions of dollars. These facts were established against both Volvo entities through separate sets of requests for admission that went unanswered within the statutory deadline. The owner requests that NHTSA evaluate whether recall 25v-179 is adequate to protect the full population of affected vehicles. Supporting documentation, including copies of the deemed admissions and service records, is being submitted by mail to the office of defect investigation. In early December (2025), I experienced hybrid system failure, with the vehicle showing this fault in the dashboard and the check engine light coming on. I took it to the dealership, as the hybrid system is still within warranty, and they diagnosed a failed hybrid battery module. They said I could continue to drive the care in combustion-only mode and would order the module. Having heard nothing, I checked in early January and was told the module would not be available until may or June of 2026. I escalated to Volvo corporate. They opened a case and keep promising to have a manager reach out to update me, but they have failed to follow-through for almost a month. I am now faced with the prospect of operating an impaired vehicle that can't pass an emissions test (and which is under warranty) for more than half a year.
On thanksgiving day I drove to train station in the morning, and had no issue. After work I got in the car started to drive, I was going 25-35 miles per hour in the maplewood township, and I wanted to slow down just in case I dont see any kid or person at dark. I almost had no brake! I was so scared and I pushed th brake pedal so hard, I was very dangerous for the society at this moment. I just wish I was not on the highway going higher speed, or there were no people around! I really cannot trust this car anymore, I could have hit something!!!.

These repeated failures left my vehicle un-drivable and parked at the dealership for more than 6 months, with replacement parts repeatedly placed on backorder, causing severe and prolonged loss of use. I filed a formal complaint with Volvo customer care requesting a vehicle buyback. After months of inadequate communication, Volvo declined to buy back the vehicle or offer reasonable trade-in accommodation. Instead, Volvo offered a nominal monetary concession contingent on signing an nda, which I declined as insufficient given the documented safety risk, repeated failures of a recalled component, extended loss of use, nor out of pocket car rental expenses. I am filing this complaint to ensure my vehicle's actual failures are part of the NHTSA record for r10312/25v-179, and to request NHTSA evaluate whether Volvo's response to owners who have experienced actual failures — rather than preemptive recall repairs — warrants further regulatory scrutiny.

On September 30, 2025, a 2016 Volvo Xc90 t6 experienced sudden engine failure while driving westbound on I-75 (alligator alley) at highway speed. The vehicle abruptly went into reduced power mode (“turtle mode”) without warning. This forced the driver to stop on the roadside, creating a serious safety hazard in fast-moving traffic. Component/system that failed: engine / power train. An independent repair facility performed diagnostics on October 6, 2025, including a compression test. Results confirmed that one cylinder had lost compression due to a failed cylinder head. The mechanic attributed this to excessive oil consumption from defective piston rings, a condition documented in Volvo technical bulletins. Inspection: the vehicle was inspected by an independent service center. Photos and test results are available for inspection upon request. The manufacturer was contacted and denied assistance, citing mileage, despite known oil consumption defects in this engine family. Safety risk: the sudden loss of power at highway speed put the driver and other motorists at risk of collision. With no advance warning, the driver was left stranded on a dangerous stretch of interstate. My car is a 2022 Volvo hybrid t8, 6-passenger Xc90. I purchased the SUV in August of 2023 as a "certified pre-owned" vehicle with only 17,923 miles on it at the time of purchase. This SUV has been fine until within the last two to three months (July-sept. 2025). Now, in sept. Of 2025, my SUV only has 30,795 miles and we have had it serviced regularly, as required, and taken care of it as responsible vehicle owners. Beginning around June or July of 2025, I began seeing the "check engine" light, so I called the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and took it in for servicing. After a day, they said it was fixed and that it was a blown fuse or two, and it was good to go. Not even 3 weeks to a month later, the "check engine" light came on again. I called and took it back to the dealership. Same story, after less than a day they called me back after fixing something else (don't remember off the top of my head what they said it was, but it was allegedly minor). Now, about 3 days ago, sept. Of 2025, I began seeing the "check engine" light again, so for the 3rd time in less than 3 months I arranged for it to be serviced by the dealership again on 9/30. A day later, another "propulsion system/maintenance required!!!" light came on as well, so I called to get servicing sooner because obviously the message is scary. I was told to bring it in, they would "work me in" but had no loaners I could use to get to and from work. So, at that point, I got my husband involved and now no one from the dealership is returning either of our calls, and I'm being told there is no recall on my car, even though a simple google search reveals there is a recall on my same make/model/year SUV. I'm getting the same messages people got about the recall, so no clue why my vehicle isn't considered as part of the recall when I am having the same issues as the recalled vehicles are having. I am beyond frustrated and ready to dump this SUV if they are unable to properly repair it!!!!!.

Erad (electronic rear axle drive) clutch failure. Upon depressing accelerator pedal, when in drive modes that rely more on erad (hybrid/pure modes), the clutch occasionally does not engage correctly, resulting in no power for a full 1-2 seconds, then power kicking in, in full. Not being consistent means not having a good way to anticipate when the problem will arise in order to compensate for it. The hazard came when attempting to cross traffic (to take a left into a commercial driveway), the delay happened, then before the ability to fully "cancel the attempt" (by releasing the accelerator and pressing the brake while still in the turn lane), the power kicked in and sent the vehicle into traffic. The delay-then-subsequent full-power meant that the gap was suddenly significantly smaller when pulling into the oncoming lanes, and attempting to correct for a delay in power meant the possibility of then not having the accelerator down, which could have left me in in the lane of oncoming traffic for much longer than necessary due to human reaction times in addition to vehicle "reaction times" to inputs. This is apparently a relatively common issue on Volvos of this generation, with multiple "erad versions" to account for transmission clutch failures within these units, as well as other failures.
The vehicle engine will fail while driving. The electronics reflect the vehicle is still running. Restarting is not immediate and is difficult. This is a known problem that Volvo recalled for 2019/2020 Xc90s. Volvo will not diagnose and repair under goodwill despite my repeated attempts.

I have a 2016 Xc90 t6 inscription. The issue started after refill the engine oil and led to malfunction in engine system. The engine list the power and slowed down the car while driving. I brought the car to the dealer 2 times already and had been fine for 3 months. However, the engine oil light showed up to refill after 3 months. I am aware that other Volvo owners are facing the same issue and it is due to defect of piston and piston ring.
Unsure of what the issue is with the vehicle but smells like gas in my garage and I found a recall I was never notified about I moved from washington to las vegas and never received any info regarding the fuel pump recall as well as a noise that’s been going on for a year now when I drive at 60 miles an hour I’ve had it looked at and no one seems to know what that issue is.

The hybrid motor periodical will hesitate when accelerating from a stop, specifically it'll start accelerating then lose power for up to a couple of seconds before regaining power. This poses a safety risk if you start pulling out into traffic and suddenly and unpredictably lose power while there's oncoming vehicles. The problem just occurred for the first time about a week ago and coincidentally just a few days after taking the car in for its annual service, since then it has happened more frequently and I can't find any rhyme or reason as to why it happens. The vehicle will be going in to be checked out shortly. There have been no warning lights any time this has happened.
Third instance of reduced engine performance warning system taking over the car, which results in the "turtle mode" coming on and throttling vehicle speeds. The car does not respond to gas except at lower speeds. Then the check engine light also came on.
Check engine light comes on every few weeks. Dealer inspects, resets, and says software issues. Now engine performance lights and "turtle mode" has come on twice throttling my speed while driving. Again no known cause and just resetting. Currently in a loaner vehicle while they research.
On Monday April 29, 2024 I started my car and immediately a warning signal on the dashboard read engine low performance , and the dashboard went black and the engine cut off. The car was then towed to the glen cove Volvo. After a diagnostic I was informed the following needed to be replaced - fuel filler pipe 2) fuel pressure low fuel indicator 3) the aforementioned replacements will require calibrated software update. . I bought this car brand new and I am the only owner and it has only been serviced by Volvo. This car only has 59, 300 miles. I researched the problem online and noted it was a common problem with the. Same make and year of my car and could not understand why there is not a recall for my car, by Volvo for this issue no matter the milage. I came across correspondence on the internet from jason guidi referencing service action s29843 - fuel tank filler pipe insert was manufactured out of specification for only t8 engines. I reached out to Volvo car USA customer care and inquired about them covering the cost of the repairs and also informing them that this problem is not only affecting t8 engines. I just received a response for my concern stating they are sorry they can not assist me with this matter. I cannot begin to express how sadden and disappointed in the corporation, to experience their lack of compassion and. Concern about their product after I spent thousands of dollars of my hard earned money on this defective car. I have no faith in Volvo and no longer feel safe driving this car. I will tell all my relatives and friends of my experience to save them from Volvo's lack of concern about their customers' safety. This is clearly no wear and tear. There are multiple posts on the internet. There's a case of replacement at 10,000 miles, another case where it was replaced and failed again and the dealer is requesting the owner to pay. This this not right. There should be a recall for the entire system when it fails. -clearly defective.
Since moving here to nevada in 2023, I’ve had several oil changes. After about 1200 I have to add mother oil to the car. I’ve gone back three times to 5 min oil change to get free refills since they offer free top offs after your initial oil change. I than took a deep dive on the internet and discovered that the Volvo Xc90, 2016 had issues with oil consumption, but never informed me of this issue. I’ve been to the dealership several times and not once did the inform me either. I mentioned to bailey anderson at findlay Volvo in las vegas that this car consumes a lot of oil. He said no it didn’t without even checking for facts. I read that Volvo knew about this issue and we’re fixing the issue, however when I inquired they wanted me to pay for their mistake. How is that so when they knew there is and was an oil consumption matter and did not inform me of the matter. I’m furious with Volvo for hiding or concealing this issue. How can I get them to correct the matter, at this point?.

Drivers side fuel tank sending unit print or sending unit top leaking fuel, a check engine light appeared and almost instantly started smelling like gas. The check engine said small evap leak. This is a huge safety concern for my family and I. No further action has been done.
This afternoon for no reason, the car flashed a non-stop message “drive to workshop. Propulsion system service urgent. ” I drove about 3 minutes at 15 mph to get the car somewhere safe, all the while the engine not turning correctly and could not accelerate safely. This appears to be a very common and dangerous issue for Volvo hybrids and there was a recall last year. It clearly did not fix the issue though.
I own a 2016 Xc90 that was regularly serviced by the Volvo dealer we bought the car from. My son and I were in my car on 08/02/2023 and we were at a stop light and something smelt a little off so my son put his window down to get fresh air. Then, we accelerated when the light turned green. Within 100 yds of accelerating my check engine light when on and simultaneously I lost acceleration. It was clear that something was wrong. I told my son we needed to unbuckle our seat belts and jump out of the car when I could get us safely stopped. We coasted into a parking lot where I found a safe spot to stop. While coasting I looked at my car screen to see if there was oil or other fluid that was low, but there was no indicator of a problem other than the check engine light that had just gone on at the same time as I lost the ability to accelerate. When the car stopped, I grabbed my purse next to me and before we were to the sidewalk the car was engulfed in smoke and then flames. Our lives were at risk within two minutes of the check engine light coming on. This car was on fire in a parking lot of a pediatricians office around other cars with young families inside. It was scary and extremely unsafe for my son and I and many other people who were around the vehicle. Our car received each recall replacement/fix that was identified. This was extremely scary and unsafe, it put our lives and others' lives at risk within 2 minutes. We along with many others called 911, the situation was immediately out of control.
Driving on the highway, check engine light came on followed by turtle mode and subsequent engine failure. Stranding driver with three small children on the highway. This has occurred several times, again stranding driver and three small children in the middle of nowhere at night having to await a tow truck and find a ride to hotel. Currently in service center for the fourth time with no apparent solution found. Volvo is not helping remedy the solution.

On 6/12/23, I was driving on a highway in new york state when I heard a bump under my car and I thought it was a rock. Nothing flashed on my dash to warn me that something serious had happened. Another driver pulled next to me and shouted out of the window, "your car is spilling gas out of the bottom of your car, pull over or your car may catch fire. " as I was near an exit, I got off the highway, and there was a service station right there. When I got out of the car, with the ignition off, I saw gas coming from the bottom of my car like a faucet (tank was 1/2 full). The service people told me to get away from the car and they tried to catch the gas as it was going all over the road and parking lot. My car was towed by Volvo to a dealer and they found that there was a 4 inch gash in my gas tank, likely caused by a piece of metal that fell from a truck. It took a week to fix my car, replace the gas tank, fuel pump and everything associated with the fuel system. It cost me $3,800 to fix. My car had less than 9,000 miles on it. When I approached Volvo USA headquarters and asked that they try to reimburse me they replied it was an act of god, and they would not cover any of it. My insurance would not cover it as it was not an accident. My complaint is that this car had no warning system within the high tech dashboard to alert me that my car was in trouble. Had it not been for the stranger on the road, I would not have known, as my a/c was on and my windows were closed. I did not smell the gas until I left the car. It is a flaw of this car that there was no warning system in place to let me know that my gas tank was breached. My dash flashes signals when my windshield wiper fluid is low. I am appealing to the national highway safety commission to report this to Volvo, and not only try to get me paid back some of the money I spent, but to upgrade their safety alert system so someone does not get killed in a freak incident like this.
On may 18, 2023, the vehicle was not driveable and it was not able to be taken out of the park mode. The vehicle had no power so the engine would not start regardless of what the tow truck driver tried. The car had to be pulled onto the tow truck so the tires did not move. On June 10, 2023, due to a backlog. The Volvo dealership was finally able to look at the vehicle. They stated "error codes in the computer indicate an internal defect in the high-voltage battery. Even after consultation with Volvo technical support, we cannot avoid removing and opening the battery to replace a part inside the battery. " due to a backlog and waiting for parts, they stated it would be 6 weeks before they could repair. On July 28, 2023, the Volvo dealership repair stated, "the first spare part (for the defective battery) that was delivered was unfortunately defective and had to be sent it back. " they will keep us up-to-date. The dealership is aware of the r10198 recall for the electronic control module.
Few days ago I came home, parked the car inside the garage and went inside. An hour later I went to the garage for something and noticed a very strong gasoline odor coming from the car. It is not coming from the reservoir and I did not put any fuel recently, so it can't be explained with a fuel spill. I suspect it is coming from the fuel pump. I as hoping or it to goo away, but it did not. It has been a week already.
My Xc90 had the oil consumption issue that I started reporting at 50k miles and Volvo finally performed a piston ring replacement at 80k miles under a service action. Fuel injectors were also replaced by the dealer. On our first long distance trip from tallahassee to atlanta, the car lost all power and stopped on I-75, almost killing us. It had to be towed and the dealer says that the engine was flooded by fuel due to fuel pump module failure causing fuel injectors to stay activated and engine needs to be replaced. I believe that the issue was caused by the repair not being done correctly or the time it took Volvo to take responsibility for the oil consumption issue and subsequent repair.

Additionally, the sunroof leaks, as noted in technical journal 31272 and tj 35503. 3. 0, and there are further issues with the windshield wiper/turn signal system, the parking brake system, and the steering wheel module. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The excessive oil consumption and related engine issues can lead to engine damage and potential failure while driving, posing a serious safety risk. The sunroof leakage could impair visibility and cause electrical failures. The persistent dashboard warning messages and system malfunctions further distract and endanger the driver and others on the road. One day while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle began to hesitate upon depression of the accelerator pedal as the turtle warning light appeared on the instrument panel which indicated that there was reduced engine performance. The contact managed to drive the vehicle to herb chambers Volvo cars of norwood(1120 providence hwy #1, norwood, MA 02062) where they were informed that contact that the fourth engine chamber had burned out which lead to engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
If the condition occurs vehicle owners may notice fuel smell and/or fuel leak which, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. This recall was done for a 2004 Volvo Xc90 . I am currently experiencing the same problem with my 2007 Volvo Xc90 awd. Every time, I fill up to 1/2 a tank or full , I start to smell the fumes inside the vehicle . I took it to get inspected , and the mechanic said the fuel pump assembly usually cracks and the vapor goes inside the cabin. I personally think this is not safe for us drivers or the passengers. Living in arizona with high temperatures usually all plastic have wear and tear , but on the fuel pump housing ? it's not where we want it.
