36 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/20/2022

While on my commute to work I received an “engine propulsion system” error message. While traveling on a busy interstate with a speed limit of 70 mph I received a second error stating “reduced engine performance, max speed reduced” I was unable to accelerate above 45 mph which seems incredibly unsafe.

37 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/03/2022

I was driving up hill at night with my kids in the car and my vehicle had a propulsion error and my car shut off on a blind corner. I couldn’t even put it in neutral and push it to the side. I was stranded without any way to move my vehicle. Multiple cars were inches away from hitting me. This is a known issue with 2022 Xc90 recharges. Volvo said they did a software update and this should fix my vehicle but unfortunately that does not seem promising as many others are still experiencing issues. Scared for my life driving my vehicle again.

38 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/24/2022

Propulsion service required message one week after we picked up our new car. Three weeks later----check engine light. Soon after another propulsion service required. Each time, our dealership reset the computer. Three months into ownership, on I-84, traveling 75 mph in the far left lane: turtle mode light, loss of power, no propulsion, able to just get off the freeway on the left. Two hour wait for assistance on side of freeway in 98 degree heat. Dealership kept car for 40 days: replaced bdu, ac compressor, igm. Similar accounts of turtle mode and power failure from other 2022 Volvo owners on speedswede. Com. We are not driving our car. Someone is going to get run over by another vehicle if Volvo doesn't address the problem.

39 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/17/2022

On August 17th 2022 I received the reduced performance and acceleration reduced sign with an icon of a turtle. Besides getting this light on my dash my evening ended in fear and distress as I received a call from my family that the new car purchased was acting up and all that they were afraid for their life. This occurred to my spouse in the middle of driving home on the freeway (as she had our two kids in the backseat). She had to drive in a very low and dangerous speed on the highway and take the first exit possible as the car started acting up. A strong smell of something burning started to permeate the car coming from under the hood of the engine. My family was beyond terrified of this. The threat and fear for their life was due to the safety failures of this vehicle. The amount of stress and anxiety this SUV caused my spouse and underage children is beyond horrific. I was forced to drive across town (in severe distress and panic, as I did not know how this will all end and if my family was ok) and exchange cars with my frightened and petrified family. As I drove the car, I was frightened for my life as I understood the possibility of the car catching on fire (as the burned smell permitted the car). I was not able to drive more than 15mph. This is the third instance of the serious safety and hybrid system malfunction of car itself within the last 90 days post purchase. First time dropped the vehicle at sacramento Volvo on may 4, 2022 due to check engine came on / acceleration reduced. Second time dropped the vehicle at sacramento Volvo on Aug 9, 2022, check engine light came on, hybrid propulsion fault is on, vehicle struggles to accelerate. This dangerous safety issues that I have experienced within the short time owning this SUV can have severe consequences on the lives of my family. I opened a case with Volvo USA, so here is the case 220818-000954.

40 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Volvo XC90

41 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/16/2022

Well I was at a red light waiting for the light to train green when I stepped on the excelerator pedal I heard something snapped and the car would not move anymore I try to switch gears and the car would not move at all it would just accelerate the engine will sound like like if I had the car on neutral. In any gear I try to shift there was no warning in the vehicle no light turned on the only light that it was turned on was the one with the check engine because of the Cadillac converter but other than that no other lights were coming out or flashing.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/10/2021

I was driving the speed limit on the highway in my Volvo 2020 Xc90 which was less than one year old. The vehicle lost acceleration power and then an engine performance light came on, then a check engine light. I pulled over immediately and my car engine caught fire under the hood. The entire front of vehicle was engulfed in flames within minutes. There were approximately 11k miles on the car and it had never been maintenanced or worked on in any way that would have caused an engine fire. It was clearly a fuel line fire and Volvo did not properly investigate. My insurance company said it was a fuel line fire but could not get information from the black box because it was destroyed. This car is incredibly unsafe and should be recalled. I have multiple videos and case files concerning this "thermal event". Volvo recalled this car in europe because of this issue and says there are none in the USA.

45 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/19/2019

Check engine light came on, dealership inspected and determined the fuel filler pipe had a leak which was replaced under warranty (23k miles). I was informed this is a common issue with the Xc90 and they too were surprised a recall has not been issued.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

Raw gas smell. Told by dealer may be dangers to drive and park out of garage so fumes don't accumulate. Garage has natural gas heat and gas water heater. Some cars sold in other states have had recalls, under Volvo recall # 220. This car has been used in some states named in summer months. I am orig owner.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/13/2019

Check engine light came on. Fuel filler pipe had to be replaced. This has happened three times and has been replaced three times. The car only had 13k miles for the third replacement.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/24/2018

There is something called an erad, which is essentially the vehicle clutch for my electronic plug-in hybrid Xc90. It is the instrument that switches between electric and gas. Mine failed. When it fails, when you hit the gas enough to push it out of electric mode to gas mode, the car essentially hesitates for 1-2 seconds - it feels like it's trying to figure out what to do then an override to gas mode happens. When I identified the problem, I was trying to turn off of three lanes of traffic to a side street and the car hesitated (temporarily doesn't respond to throttle input) as I was sitting perpendicular to traffic. The all gas mode then turns on and takes over, but it hesitates which could be a serious problem. I could've been hurt, but, thankfully, I wasn't. After that, I drove it in full-time gas mode until it was fixed (no problems when I did that). If this were an isolated incident, I wouldn't report it, but there were 4 other Volvos suffering from the same issue at my dealership alone (Volvo cars of bethesda) so they couldn't take me for 3-4 weeks. They sell fewer than 5% of their total fleet of these t8 electric hybrids, so for 5 total cars to have the same issue (2016 - 2018) indicates a major problem. I'm concerned someone who doesn't necessarily have my awareness of cars who may otherwise feel safe in the car's throttle response may take an unnecessary chance and get into an accident. Please investigate. Thanks!.

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/19/2018

I purchased my 2018 Volvo Xc90 t6 awd (hereinafter, the 2018 Xc90 or the vehicle) in October 2017, through lease agreement. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that the fuel efficiency of the vehicle was well below the epa rating and warranted range, based on representations by the dealer at, and prior to, the time of sale. I took the vehicle to the dealer's service department, so the issue could be investigated further. The dealer reported there was a software update that addressed the problem, and that it would no longer be an issue. Subsequently, the issue continued to re-appear and the fuel efficiently continued to suffer. I again, on numerous occasions (between 5 or 6) between December 2017 and November 2018, took the vehicle to the dealer's service department. In each occurrence, except the final one prior to this complaint being filed, it was again reported that no issue existed or had been remedied with a software fix. Furthermore, in (or around) July of this year, the compressor (or another component controlling the hvac system in the 2018 Xc90) failed, whilst driving to houston, texas. The heat inside the vehicle quickly raised. This part was replaced in houston. In October 2018, I again, finally, took the 2018 Xc90 to the service department because (1) the check engine light came on; and (2) the electronic safety systems, such as the auto braking, had automatically engaged without any cars around the vehicle. The vehicle was also driving and handling in a strange manner. Fuel efficiency was again a concern. The service department had the vehicle for approx. Two-and-a-half weeks. They, ultimately, determined the fuel parts, were defective. They replaced these parts and noted it would be responsible for all prior fuel issues. However, they also stated a recall was issued, but my vehicle was not on the list. No recall notice exists with the NHTSA.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/15/2018

All the vehicle lights will come on over the dash and the wheel locks then it shuts off while I am driving. This is so unsafe for my family. I am not sure why there is not a recall for my VIN # when google clearly states that this is a hazard and that there are recalls for this problem.

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/12/2018

Vehicle smells like gasoline when stopped and parked, and when driving. The smell seems to be strongest at the right rear of the vehicle when parked outside. When parked in the garage, the gasoline smell would be extremely strong and start coming into the house. It was severe enough I opened the garage door manually because I was afraid of blowing up the entire house. It is now staying parked in the driveway because the smell is so bad. There is a recall on certain VIN numbers, however Volvo says mine is not affected by the recall that would fix the smell. The recall appears to have been set up by state in which the vehicle was originally purchased, not necessarily vehicles with the part in question. The state where the vehicle has been since 2001 is virginia. I spoke with my local dealership, who simply said to bring it in and they could diagnose it at their normal rates, and they would charge full price for parts and labor. Speaking with a Volvo USA representative got me a bit further with a 30% off parts coupon. While a nice gesture, it would have been nice to include vehicles that fell outside listed recalled VIN numbers on a case by case basis. At any rate, this is not an optional repair, as a gas smell indicates gasoline vapors, which are highly explosive.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/19/2016

While driving between cincinnati, OH and nashville, TN, we stopped in carollton, ky to refuel at a local gas station. Upon attempting to open the fuel door, the door would not unlock. There is no button or switch to use to open the fuel door on this vehicle. Despite several attempts to turn the lock and unlock the car, the fuel door would not open. We contacted Volvo oncall, who admitted this was a known issue but they did not have solution. The only offer for assistance was to use the key remote to lock and unlock the car 3 times in an attempt to reset the electronics. This car also comes with a buttonless "key tag," which is what we were using at the time. Volvo had no awareness of this key tag and had no other solution to offer. Given our proximity to louisville, we agreed to attempt the drive to louisville and left the car with friends while we rented a car and drove to nashville to get the key fob with buttons. Then drove back to louisville to try the lock-unlock option to no avail. We then took the car to the local Volvo dealer where the door was mechanically opened and the lock mechanism was disassembled so that the car could be refueled. Though a known issue by Volvo, they have not communicated with the dealers as this car had a 10,000 mile service 2 days prior to this event. The inability to fuel the vehicle and cause people to be stranded should prompt a recall.

66 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/15/2015

Looking for repairs on fuel issues,I read important information on what I was looking for. My Volvo had started to smell like gas, more in the rear right sides or back side. I had read that it maybe or is a recall issue . I bought my Volvo in 4/28/15 being only the second owner,I noticed the smell called the dealer where I bought the car, they suggested a diagnostic check. Came up as possible Volvo recall, since a bought the car as is they didnt fix it, they did suggest on calling Volvo direct for this issue. I made a appointment with autonation Volvo in san jose CA on 6/15/2015. When showing up for service they denied that my car was not a recall on that particular problem fuel issues, it was a recall on 157. I was suprised because I had gone for a fuel issue not a suspension issue. So my fuel issue is still present. So all I can say is that my issue with my Volvo is a recall witch Volvo of san jose CA dont want to fix because its not in the year, model, make. Clearly I have the mobil make and year, 2004 Xc90 Volvo do to all the information found. Myself and my husband drive this car every day plus my 7 yr. Old with my newborn passengers being a hazard to my family. We took in the Volvo in on Saturday the 10/17 of 2015 because the smell is really bad, we need to drive with the ac at all times because the smell outside is so bad. We got rejected again, saying the same my car does not fall in that recall also do to my VIN number not matching who knowes what, I need this fixed bad. We have also had people tell us about the smell being strong. As you can see its a safety and fire hazard for my familys safety, and at this time financial hardship is in issue do to maternity leave to be paying something that clearly its a Volvo issue , I think Volvo should take this as a big concern. I do hope this problem gets resolved and done. Thank you for your time and work.

The vehicle was seen by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000. Gl.

68 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/13/2015

My 2004 Volvo Xc90 with a 2. 5t engine, 7 pass, intermittently and inadvertently stalls while driving it. It is scary beacuse all electrical goes off, instrument panel, radio, lights, etc, several warning messages appears, such abs, air bags failure, brake failure, engine failure, etc. It won't respond to acceleration and brakes are very hard to push, the engine does not stop. I have to stop, turn it off, wait few minutes, then start it, everything comes to normal again but with the check engine and the air bags message, then after some minutes of driving the same stalling and electrical issues happen again. This is serious because you are on freeway and you loose brakes and engine control, no information in instrument panel, etc. I found that the relays in the cem (control electronics module) are super hot possibly due to loose connections, in the video below you will see the problems and infrared pictures of the cem. Please help!!!!!! please help!!!!!! please help!!!!!! please help!!!!!! please see my youtube video and other videos with the same issue search for Xc90 issues, Xc90 stalling, Xc90 electrical problems, etc. . 70 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

Upon leaving out for the day vehicle hesitated somewhat when I would accelerate on gas pedal. After driving for only 5 mls. Vehicle started sputtering, I thought maybe I should stop and get gas that would solve the problem but no the problem continued and got worse, as long as I was just coasting it was ok, but upon accelerating is when it felt like it was about to stall and there was also fuel smell when accelerating. The sputtering & shaking and rough sound worsen as well. I spoke with an auto repairman and he informed me of the vehicles recalls on fuel system and that it was most definitely what my situation was with my Volvo.
