1 Steering problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/26/2025

While actively driving into an intersection, driving on the street and or stopped at a light or at a stop the vehicle will shut off, the lights on the dashboard will sometimes be on, other times go completely black, a notification pops up on the dashboard saying "engine not in p". There is no way I'm aware of to re create this action. My children's safety as well as mine has been put at significant risk and in harms way as well as others due to the severity and nature of this unexpected risk while driving on the freeway, through intersections and in general driving through traffic and busy streets. I've had multiple close calls of almost being hit when the car stopped while I'm driving with my children. The problem has yet to be reproduced by the dealer at this time however we have photos and video of it's ongoing safety concern. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer nor police but is currently at the dealer undergoing inspection. There has not been any notifications or warnings prior to any one of these serious events, the message only comes up when the car is off and won't go.

2 Steering problem of the 2021 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/27/2024

Vehicle steer violently on pilot assist and powertrain disabled, not allowing us to steer the wheel on a highway. (last year) we were lucky no other cars were nearby, needed a reboot for the wheels to work again. Dealership isn’t sure what happened. Now we have a hybrid system failure which a lot of cars with the same model Xc90 t8 is having with the hybrid system. Please investigate into this.

3 Steering problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/06/2024

When driving slowly to enter a parking garage, the steering wheel on the car started to feel stiff, and as I completed the turn, there was a loud snapping sound. The dashboard showed an urgent fault saying “srs airbag urgent - drive to workshop”. I drove it to the Volvo dealer. The steering wheel was having problems turning left. When the dealer attempted to move the car, it was then unable to turn left at all. So, the steering wheel completely failed.

4 Steering problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/10/2023

Yesterday I had my vehicle checked at a Volvo dealership shop for the malfunction of the dim (driver/driving instrument module, also known as dashboard; I have filed a separate compliant about this common problem. ), their diagnosis also found a critical malfunction of the steering wheel module, which needs to be replaced with stalks. This is a potentially very serious safety issue. I'd suggest Volvo to recall this safety issue.

5 Steering problem of the 2014 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/07/2023

The automobile is still at jim ellis Volvo mall of georgia not being repaired because Volvo USA has declined to assist. The problem with the steering has been vocally delivered to me by service department as the universal joint in the steering column has failed. This is a large expense which I should not have to be responsible for with at car this early in it's life, 85k.

6 Steering problem of the 2023 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/17/2023

On may 18, 2023, the vehicle was not driveable and it was not able to be taken out of the park mode. The vehicle had no power so the engine would not start regardless of what the tow truck driver tried. The car had to be pulled onto the tow truck so the tires did not move. On June 10, 2023, due to a backlog. The Volvo dealership was finally able to look at the vehicle. They stated "error codes in the computer indicate an internal defect in the high-voltage battery. Even after consultation with Volvo technical support, we cannot avoid removing and opening the battery to replace a part inside the battery. " due to a backlog and waiting for parts, they stated it would be 6 weeks before they could repair. On July 28, 2023, the Volvo dealership repair stated, "the first spare part (for the defective battery) that was delivered was unfortunately defective and had to be sent it back. " they will keep us up-to-date. The dealership is aware of the r10198 recall for the electronic control module.

7 Steering problem of the 2023 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/05/2023

My name is kendal j deihl. My wife dense deihl has been corresponding with Volvo car financial, as well as Volvo, regarding our Volvo Xc90 lease. This Volvo has been the biggest disappointment of any car we've ever leased or purchased out of the new cars and trucks we have purchased every 2-3 years for the past 40 years. We have contacted Volvo several times about the issues we are having and taken it in three times to have the problem resolved. I live in a rural area with backroads, and they say the mapping system called city view does not work well on backroads, so they are not able to replicate the problem when it is taken in for them to look at. I have been in constant communications with our saleslady sara, she is wonderful and has been most helpful. She also has documentation of everything, and a few videos. She did see when I came to pick the car up three weeks ago, that it doesn’t understand a lot of our commands. The car jerks the steering wheel from me into oncoming traffic, off the road, then tells me it avoided a collision when it almost caused a collision. Hey google, does not understand either of us, the slight chance it does, it does not do what we have requested. I do have a video showing different things that the car does. It seems to have a mind of its own, I do not feel safe driving this car any longer. It is going to cause us to have an accident. I purchased the car because I thought Volvo was the safest vehicle there was to buy or lease. Now my feelings have changed I am afraid to even drive the car to the point I am having to borrow my mother’s older vehicle. The back hatch doesn’t always open, you must assist it with your hand. It came down and hit my head in food lion parking lot and two men came running over to check on me. I met a tractor last week and the steering just went crazy, it was all over the road, and I was having to really fight it. My husband says he feels as if he has driven a tractor trailer all day when.

8 Steering problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/01/2023

The indicators do not work randomly and we have had near miss accidents. The bulbs are in good working order. The stalk functions correctly. The computer after several seconds flashes up a message that the system has failed. Clearly the system is not safe as it’s designed. If Volvo are using a computer system to operate the lights it should be sufficiently reliable and fault tolerant to maintain safe operation of the vehicle.

9 Steering problem of the 2020 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/08/2023

The vehicle shudders randomly when taking off from a stopped position around 18mph. The vehicle shudders randomly when slowing down to make a right turn. The vehicle shudders when driving at higher speeds. It's not a violent shudder, but those riding in the vehicle feel it as well. The safety concern is two fold in that there is a fear of losing control at an inopportune time. Secondly, the constant shuddering over time is going to result in damaging other part of the vehicle, particularly the engine, that will present a safety hazard while driving. The vehicle was purchased used(certified). The dealer replaced collapsed engine mounts on left and right side and considered it resolved. Forman at dealer stated it is common with Xc90's to have engine shudder as if this should be accepted. Because the engine shudder is happening at higher speeds now, we're going to return to dealer, but I do not expect a solution. I've seen others report similar issues with shuddering on Volvo forums and I haven't seen 1 solution that worked. This is a problem in a lot of Xc90's. The attached documents also contain some attempted fixes to correct a drifting issue.

10 Steering problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/28/2023

Hi, I had a 2016 Xc90 which has serious safety problems. The sunroof has a factory defect, leaking water into the car and causing failures in electronic systems and airbags. Many other owners have sued Volvo and won their cases. Additionally, the issue has been certified by the court, and there are technical bulletins published by Volvo addressing the problem. Yes. The water leak can damage entire electronic systems, such as airbags, the start-stop system, braking system, and lidar system. Once water enters any of these systems, it can lead to accidents and fires due to short circuits, posing a deadly risk. This issue can cause accidents or fires. No, but Volvo has published a bulletin, and there have been many court cases filed against Volvo since 2016. No, the vehicle has not been inspected. It's causing numerous random errors on the dashboard. This issue occurred approximately two weeks after I purchased the vehicle. . Read more...

11 Steering problem of the 2021 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

On two separate occasions, while driving car on highway at high speed, the car has gone into a special shutdown mode, where a turtle icon lights up on the dash and the car begins to shut itself down rapidly, limiting maximum speed of vehicle to 35mph. There is no warning or advanced alert. Suddenly the car reduces speed and feels like it is dead, and the systems begin to alert you that they are going into a reduced function mode. This was extremely scary thing to happen at highway speeds with flowing traffic. I had to crawl to side of rose at very low speeds. I could have been injured. I took the car to dealer for service and they said it was a software issue. A few months after, this happened yet again, also while at highway speeds. I have read that others are having similar issues with the Volvo Xc90 model. This is so dangerous and the dealerships are writing it off as a software matter! it is extremely dangerous.

12 Steering problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/02/2023

The car starting leaking water into the rear view mirror in June. This wouldn’t be much of an issue, but the cars computer system for drive assist is located in this area and has caused the car to malfunction in all areas. This Xc90 pilot assist is now malfunctioning causing a huge safety issue. This is apparently a known problem with their cars with the panoramic sunroof, but is now a safety hazard. The Volvo dealership did not fix the issue and is now happening again effecting all of the electrical system.

14 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/13/2020

I am concerned these 2 issues may pose a safety risk. I recently purchased this car from a friend and have had it about a month. I notice the steering is very stiff and difficult to maneuver. I was trying to find out if there were any recalls on this but having no luck. Also, when the car is in gear "drive", when stopped on an incline (even the slightest hill) I notice that when I take my foot off the brake pedal the car rolls backwards! it shouldn't do that. The transmission notice on the dash is saying it needs service but my friend I bought it from said she had it checked twice and was told there is no transmission issue. Is there a recall on power-train/trans parts? the car should not roll backwards when in gear "drive", even if I am stopped on a hill. Even a slight incline and the car rolls back. Not normal. Thank you for any and all help you can offer. This isn't an "incident" but I do not know who else to contact for help.

15 Steering problem of the 2012 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/15/2020

On morning of 2/15/2020, I was driving my Xc90 (2012, base, auto transmission) on a city street when I realized the steering wheel was no longer in control. It caused the vehicle to swing left and right between the 2 lanes. I pressed hard on the brake to slow down -- thank god that cars behind me were able to avoid me. After 10 seconds or so of maneuvering, I managed to pull over by the street. An orange triangle light came on the dashboard, with a warning message: "auto-skid temporary off". I called the roadside assistance to tow it to my go-to dealership. An hour later, a flatbed tow truck came. The tow guy managed to still drive it up the slope of the flatbed. When we got to the dealership, the tow guy had a hard time unloading the vehicle. As he reversed the Xc90 back down from the slope of the flatbed, we could tell the front two tires were pointing in different directions. The left front tire even moved back and forth. If the steering wheel turned left, the left tire would crush into the back of the front bumper; if the steering wheel turned right, the left tire would back off. The guy had to insert a smooth plank under the front left tire to unload. On Monday 2/17/2020, a rep from dealership called me, saying that the control arm was damaged with screws and bolts completely missing!!! she speculated that we drove over a very large pothole or hit some curb. My wife did hit a curb on 2/14/2020, one day prior, but it was just a normal sized curb, impacting on the front right side. Between my wife and myself, we couldn't recall anything severe enough to cause this sort of damage! questions: (1) how could hitting some curbs over the past 8 years cause the bolts to shear/loosen and result in such a grave incident! (2) how am I ever going to trust that the vehicle is safe to drive again? how do I convince my 2 young children to ride in it ever?.

16 Steering problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

The controls on steering intermittently disabled. I take it to the dealer they updated the software and it was fixed for while, but it reappeared again! many Volvo owners has the similar issues most of them ended up replacing the control module part on the steering wheel. This is a dangerous symptom since most drivers like me rely heavily on these controls to select vehicle system options and cruise control. Also dealer asking me to change the break components very frequently sometimes just 20000 miles. I am ended paying hefty price of these parts to keep the breaks safe.

17 Steering problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Tl the contact owned a 2017 Volvo Xc90. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off and caused the steering wheel to seize and the electronic gauges to shut off. The driver lost control of the steering and crashed into a pond. The front end was severely damaged and the vehicle was deemed destroyed, but the air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer (weaver brothers Volvo, 4409 capital blvd, raleigh, nc) were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 10,000.

19 Steering problem of the 2008 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/11/2018

I was driving down the highway and my vehicle completely shut down and the steering locked. I was able to put on the emergency signals and the big rigs behind me blew their horns. They were getting closer to me because I was decelerating at a rate that would have resulted in a colission. Fortunately I was able to coast into an emergency lane while they went whipping past me. The Volvo service manager stated that he had heard of a similar situation before. In an email to me he stated that "the pressure sensor was giving a faults reading, of excessive fuel pressure. When the pem saw the faults reading, it cut the fuel to the engine as it thought it was way over pressurized. " I feel very fortunate that nobody was severally injured or killed.

21 Steering problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/26/2016

On approximately six different occasions, the collision avoidance system has been triggered erroneously, when no other vehicles were near my car, to the point that the audible and visual alarms were triggered, my driver's seatbelt pulled me back against the driver's seat, two of those times the car swerved itself and another two of those times the car braked itself, without any prompting from the driver to do so. The dealership told me today that because the system works on radar that sometimes this will happen. I believe that these systems need to be practically error proof because if the car brakes itself, or swerves itself, without any action from the driver it could potentially *cause* an accident. Not to mention that it's very scary when it happens and then there has to be some emotional recovery as a driver to overcome these episodes. The car has about 1000 miles on it. All of these incidents happened on city streets, while the car was going anywhere from 25-45 mph.

25 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/17/2014

3 hours into a 3-1/2 hour weekend road trip there was a clunk in the engine compartment. Thinking I hit a pothole, I continued on cautiously. While continuing on these unfamiliar 2 lane windy roads going 43mph (the speed limit was 55) about 2 miles from where the clunk happened my entire dash cluster stopped working. All my dome lights and leg lights came on. The car clunked harder this time. I lost power to the engine, steering was like trying to turn a tank, and the brakes were very spongy. Still traveling on windy roads with large semi trucks behind me and cars passing by in the opposite lane I veered to the right to avoid being rear ended by a semi. Not being able to steer or stop as efficiently as before I coasted into a residents 2-3 man rock landscape traveling at about 5mph. I dented my front license plate and scratched the bumper. With my heart pounding, I turned the car off and got out to see the damage. I went to the residents home and told them my story. They were thankful my fiancã© and I were okay. Since I hit rock there was no damage done to their landscape. After 20 minutes I started the car. It was hesitant to start. The brake failure light was on for a few seconds then the srs service warning light came on and stayed on. For the remainder of the weekend trip the car would lurch like the tranny was slipping. Especially after taking off from a stop light. It still clunks once in awhile but we only drive it around town. It's currently at a certified Volvo specialist being serviced. This morning all lights stopped working and I couldn't get it out of the garage. The key stuck in the ignition. In conclusion, this mishap could have resulted in a serious injury or fatality. If every car of this make and model is doing this, they need to be recalled and repaired!.

26 Steering problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/03/2013

Was driving on free way, as I was accelerating I lost all power and steering. . The engine stalled out and I had to veer off to side so that I wouldn't cause an accident.

27 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/03/2010

While driving our Volvo xc-90, the entire electrical system shuts down (dashboard display, lighting, ac, power windows, power door locks, everything electrical etc. ). Additionally, for a split second the engine/transmission jerks and/or stalls before resuming. The first time this happened was in 2010 and never occurred again for several years. Then suddenly on a recent trip in August 2014 this happened repeatedly and the electrical system never returned to operation during that trip. In that August 2014 occurrence we were traveling down narrow state highway 1 in big sur, California. Had we lost control of the vehicle during the jerking episodes we could have gone off the narrow road and down the steep cliff side to our deaths. This put our family in a very perilous situation. Additionally, since the above incident in late August 2014 the vehicle has experienced numerous other flashes/jerking incidents while at highway speeds. This occurrence seems to be increasing. This is a very dangerous situation and needs to be addressed with a national re-call.

28 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc90. While traveling 35-45 mph the contact noticed that the front driver side tire had suddenly turned outward rubbing against the wheel which caused the vehicle to come to stop. The vehicle was not diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 77000.

29 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

After driving 125 miles without incident, we left our 2004 Volvo xc 90 t6 awd parked for 4 hours before driving again. After less than a half mile at low speed, there was a "thump" from the front of the car, the wipers cycled, the gauges all went blank, some of the windows stopped working, the a/c went out (blower stayed on). The car stayed on, but seemed "stuck" in second gear and the brakes became "spongy," but operable. Turn signals were inoperable and the power steering went out. The indicator light on the gear shift went out and the central locking system stopped functioning. We got out of traffic and into the shade. I checked all fuses and tried to restart the car. It would restart, but within seconds there were multiple "clicks" coming from the area near the fuse box in the passenger compartment followed by the electrical failures described above. After letting the car sit for a couple of hours we moved it to a secure location two miles away. During that drive all of the above problems happened again, including the engine being "stuck" in second gear. After letting the car sit overnight, it started and ran without incident. However, the "check engine" light and the "srs" light have remained on. A repair shop could not diagnose the problem. Prior to this incident, the same things happened to my wife in the same car. The symptoms lasted a few seconds and disappeared.

30 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/04/2008

While driving my 2004 Volvo xc-90 at night I experienced a momentary loss of control, followed by the headlights pausing and then going from high beams to low. The instrument cluster lost some of it's displays and the door locks became inoperative. The data display warned me of an "urgent srs failure". I was at low speed a block from home so I crept home and the next day sent the car to triad Volvo by roll-back wrecker. Problem was failure of central electronic module. I called Volvo corporate and they seemed disinterested.

31 Steering problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/14/2005

33 Steering problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/26/2004

On August, 26, 2004 there was a major malfunction in our Volvo Xc90 (2004). While driving with 2 small children in car seats and 2 adults on a major highway; suddendly, there was no acceleration in the gas pedal and the stearing wheel did not function. We managed to slowly move to the side of the road from what momentum was left in the car, and avoid an accident. We were obviously very shaken up, and find this car completely unsafe. It has been 3 weeks now getting the run around with the cherry hill, new jersey Volvo dealer. They said "there's nothing wrong with the car". The car is unsafe for our family, and presents a danger for others on the road. We are afraid it will stop dead again on a major highway with death or injuries occuring to either ourselves or others. The dealer asked us what we wanted "we finally said, (after they said they'd get us a new SUV and did not) that we want our money back ($3,000 deposit) and we don't want this car they sold us. Today, they made us take this car back and they are refusing our request to refund our money. Also, the car was towed on a flat bed truck in to the dealer on July 13th, 2004 as the car did not start. . "relays were loose in the icm and cem etc. ," [we have the service order] on this day, the message on the car said something to the effect "urgent malfunction in SUV air bags. . . " and we unloaded the family and it was towed to the Volvo dealership. And the car's 2 side mirrors work one day and not the next. Tomorrow I take matthew to his first day at pre-school, and I'm half thinking what if something happens to the car when we're driving. It's amazing to me that Volvo can let me leave their parking lot with this car this evening, and the aren't taking safety seriously at all. So, at 11:00 pm I am up letting the NHTSA know what's going on. We are willing to help in anyway we can. Sincerely, the lawrence family.
