Ignition Problems of Acura MDX

Ignition can be turned off in any gear and key removed. This should only be possible while in park for safety considerations. Vehicle will coast if on a grade.

The contact owns a 2006 Acura Mdx. The contact stated after getting out of his vehicle, it began to roll backwards crashing into another vehicle. The police were not notified nor was anyone injured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised him that the ignition key converter failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100,200. Updated 10/4/11.

This is related to the recent Honda recall for ignition key issue. The same problem has been noticed on my Acura 2003 Mdx. There has not been any incident arising out of it because of my checks after switching off my car but some other people might not be lucky. The key sometimes comes out after switching the car off without moving the gear to park. This happens if done quickly. The date below is a approximate date since I know it happened 2-3 weeks back.

Ignition key can be removed when engine is turned off but car in is in a gear other than park. It has happened several times over the past month and the dealer service tech was able to replicate it today. I was quoted a repair cost of over $550 to replace key cylinder and rekey the door car to match "new" ignition key. As of today, I have not fixed the defect but am going to seek another estimate to repair.

The contact owns a 2001 Acura Mdx. The contact stated that the ignition interlock system would allow the driver to take the key out of the ignition when it was not in park. The vehicle rolled out of the driveway and almost struck a mercedes by about 4 inches. The vehicle landed in a hedge. No injuries were reported. Honda was contacted but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were 135,000.

The contact owns a 2003 Acura Mdx. The contact stated that she parked the vehicle and left it in drive; yet, when she removed the key out of the ignition, the vehicle rolled down the driveway. Honda was contacted and they stated that there was nothing they could do. The vehicle was not repaired. This failure has been present for approximately one month. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000. The current mileage was 95,200. Updated 12/22/lj.

The key can be removed from the ignition while the vehicle is still in gear even though the vehicle is stopped allowing the vehicle to still roll if on an incline or bumped.
