1 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2004 Audi A4

Failure Date: 08/23/2021

Prnds appeared in red on my dash and then started blinking. Went on line regarding this and read about a tcm switch or a lever switch malfunction. Have an appt with mechanic on 8/26/21. From what I have read we are looking at a cost prohibitive repair of several thousands of dollars. Does Audi have any responsibility? apparently it is a common complaint with the A4 model. Felt loss of power when decelerating.

2 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2008 Audi A4

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Power train problem results in prnds light flashing, intermittently. While driving, the transmission changes gears which leads to loss of control of vehicle. Similar problem led to recall of previous models. Audi should be responsible for remedying this dangerous situation.

3 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2003 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/29/2017

My 2003 Audi A4 cabriolet has the infamous p0706 code, which is a error code indicating the failure of the transmission control module. In my case, my Audi slips while reversing and causes a hazard when I am reversing, especially while in a tight or cluttered spot. It also has the prnd blinking due to the defective transmission control module. Many other Audi A4s with cvt transmissions have had this failure, which has led to a lawsuit. I received a recall letter that stated I would be able to get a free repair, but I was refused because my car had over 100000 miles on it, but the problem occurred long before that. I need to get this problem fixed. Thank you for your time.

4 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2008 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/24/2017

My A4 randomly switches into neutral as I am driving down the highway. I have no control and have coasted to the shoulder of the road on one occasion when "drive" would not re-engage. My dashboard screen flashes over the prnd transmission indicators. The check engine light is on also, so I took the car to the Audi dealer in south orlando. I was told that the transmission control module has gone bad and will cost $3100 to repair. The car also will not go into reverse about every 3rd or 4th time I select this gear. My research shows that this same problem was a recall on 2004-2006 models, so I would assume Audi will recall this model year as well. My A4 has 62,000 miles on it and has been maintained by the dealer since new. I don't understand how this safety issue has not been elevated to a recall status already given the previous history of similar problems on the same models.

5 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2008 Audi A4

Failure Date: 04/14/2017

Problem begins with prnds light flashing, intermittently. Then the very frightening and dangerous occurred. While driving along the highway the transmission changes from drive to neutral by itself thus losing control of the speed and motion of the vehicle. This specific problem produced a recall for the same problem on the same Audi vehicle's 2002 - 2006 models. Upon calling Volkswagen Audi, up to the president himself, I was told that when the transmission was tested by my Audi dealer that the "code" was not the same as the previous recall. Code? the symptoms are the same as the recall and they tell me the code is different. The code could be changed like a "password" could be changed. The symptom appears to be a common problem as several auto shops told me this and the Audi dealer itself said that this was a common problem. My Audi only has 72500 miles on it and this electronic module, tcm and relay which are inside the transmission housing are the blame to this problem. My feeling is that this is a very dangerous problem, should it occur at highway speeds and the transmission goes into neutral by itself this could be possibly deadly to the occupants of the vehicle or other vehicles around it. How could Audi be so blatantly able to ignore this? I had my Audi repaired at the dealer and was told that they used an "updated" tcm module. This updating only shows that they are fully aware of the problem and do not have a recall for the vehicles with this problem as they did for the 2002 - 2006 models!!! are they waiting for someone to be seriously injured or killed before they step up and do what is necessary to prevent such an occurrence? please help prevent this from happening to other Audi A4 owners or the drivers who may happen to be near them on the road. Thank you.

6 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2003 Audi A4

Failure Date: 09/08/2012

The car had started to have the prnd flash, but it kept running good. On Saturday I drove around 20 miles and parked on a small angled road I turned the car off. When I turned it on again I put it on reverse which didn't engage and started to go down almost crashing into a wall. I had to get out and push the car.

7 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2002 Audi A4

Failure Date: 08/08/2010

My 2002 Audi A4 has a defect with the transmission control module. This defect results in the loss of my ability to put the gear in reverse (automatic cvt transmission). This has happened to me several times within the past month ( which is when this problem started). I was faced with a horrifying experience where I needed to reverse in order to avoid a bus from hitting my car while it was turning onto the road I was stopped at. The reverse did not work, and it acted as if it were in neutral. I quickly shifted to neutral and back to reverse and luckily (that time) it worked. I noticed that when my car doesn't reverse the prnd flashes on the gauge cluster. I have researched this problem and noticed that thousands of people are having the same problem with their Audi A4's. It's only a matter of time before I get into an accident because of this faulty error that Audi has not recalled. My mechanic confirmed my suspicions of the transmission control module failing and said it will get worse over time. I called my local Audi dealer and they said they are aware of this problem but have yet to do anything about it.

8 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2004 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/02/2010

2004 Audi A4 1. 8l turbo - the car suffers from a problem that begins with a flashing of the gear selector range (prnds). This occurs consistently, every time the vehicle is operated. When prnds is flashing the vehicle possesses a serious safety concern that has occurred (3) times since the onset of this condition. While the gear selector range was flashing I pulled over to re-fuel at a local gas station. After purchasing gas I returned to the car, started it up, and the flashing prnds condition persisted. When I engaged reverse to exit the gas pump area the car very suddenly lunged backwards with such tremendous force that the vehicle break system could not contain the jolting force of the backwards movement. If anyone had been standing behind me. . . . . . They would have been very seriously injured or killed. I have made efforts to contact the vehicle manufacturer (Audi of America) and they fail to acknowledge this very serious safety issue. This is simply unacceptable. . . . Especially in light of the fact that the company has full knowledge of this defective and threatening vehicle condition. There are many other Audi A4 owners that have reported this problem, and it is well documented on Audi forums on the internet. The heart of my concern: instead of volunteering to repair this serious safety hazard, Audi of America has advised that I need to have the transmission control module replaced at a personal cost to me of approximately $3,000. 00, which I find appalling. The car continues to exhibit this driving condition, and lunging reverse condition can be replicated. I would like the opportunity to call this to the attention of the NHTSA for review before someone is seriously hurt or killed. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to elevate my concern ASAP.

9 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2003 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

I purchased the vehicle in September 2002. In October 2003, the transmission suffered a massive failure and required a complete replacement under warranty. Around July 2007 the check engine light came on and the "prnd" indicator on the dashboard started flashing. Champion Audi in pompano beach, florida diagnosed the problem as a defective transmission control module (tcm). Despite my demands, the Audi dealer refused to fix the defective part, and wanted to charge me upwards of $2500 to replace the tcm. My independent (and aaa approved) repair facility recently confirmed the tcm requires replacement. Bottom line: the transmission could fail, again, at any time. The transmission has been a problem from the beginning and Audi needs to step up to the plate and replace the tcm at no charge. My research indicates that tcm failure is a common problem on Audis. Audi is aware of these issues yet refuses to do the right thing.

10 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 2003 Audi A4

Failure Date: 03/18/2007

In February 2007, my 2003 A4s multitronic cvt (transmission) started to fail. It was slow to engage to reverse and to first gear from a complete stop, and the prnd indicator on the dashboard began to blink continuously. Although these were obvious problems, the mechanic at our Audi dealership informed me the car was operating according to manufacturers specifications. ¿ the car only had 61,000 miles. Soon thereafter, the transmission got worse. On one occasion, my infant daughter and I were put in danger when the transmission didn't engage as I attempted a left turn. We were stuck in oncoming traffic in a car that would not move. It was only after I pressed the gas pedal multiple times, revving the engine significantly, that the car bucked into first gear and lurched forward. On another occasion, the car would not go into reverse when I tried to back out of a space in a busy parking lot. This space was on a slight incline, causing the car to roll forward when I stepped on the gas in the attempt to engage the reverse. Instead of reversing, again the engine revved significantly and rolled forward, nearly missing the parked car in front of me. After several attempts the reverse suddenly engaged and lurched backwards. Thank goodness nobody was injured in either situation. At 64,000 miles the transmission failed completely. I had to replace it at a cost of $6,500. Audi even required that my broken transmission be sent back to them so they could study the failure. The technical staff at my Audi dealership, as well as the owner of the repair shop where I eventually had the transmission replaced, remarked that the multitronic cvt's design is problematic, and that theyre seeing major issues with them.

11 Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator problem of the 1998 Audi A4

Failure Date: 06/01/1998

Car would pop out of first gear at slow speeds during a turn. Had to fight with dealer & Audi of America for 4 months before they would acknowledge a problem or fix it. They finally replaced the transmission, and that solved the problem. We have several other non-safety problems that the dealer is slow to acknowledge and repair. We switched dealers in the denver area to mcdonald after the problems with prestige. Mcdonald's attitude towards customer service is no better. If you want a report/complaint on the additional, non-safety related problems, let us know.
