1 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Audi A4

Failure Date: 04/09/2014

I purchased the car in 2013 the key was very difficult to turn in the ignition, after 3 months, it locked up one time in the garage so I just left it as it was and tried the next day. After yanking on the steering wheel and almost breaking the key in the ignition it finally started. A week later I was out shopping and it did the same thing - tow truck driver had no way of even towing the car because the wheels were cocked to the right, key would not come out of the ignition - the steering wheel was totally frozen. A mechanic came and got the wheel to move in turn allowed the car to start I had to leave the car in neutral with the key in it for weeks while we researched this issue. I called the dealer who sold me the car, they told me it was probably the ignition switch needed to be replaced - I asked them why this was not checked before they sold me the car they insisted it did not show up in the diagnostics for a certified preowned Audi I took the car to mechanic. After 7 days tearing the whole steering column out they found the wheel locking mechanism and the key/ignition switch was broken also the airbag light would not go off. After more research the mechanic found reports on the faulty, ignition switch, airbag light and the worst the wheel locking mechanisms which some people had this happen while driving causing accidents. I could not find any recall info and this cost me a lot of money, time and anguish. Audi would not even perform the diagnostic on the car without an up front cost, also the airbag light would not go off after it was taken out and put back in it must be reset with a special Audi tool and they charge for that as well. Seriously I am afraid to drive the car now because if this happens on the highway I could be dead from their lack of concern for safety my Audi is a convertible all wheel drive - should I take out a life insurance policy?.

9 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Audi A4

Failure Date: 09/08/2005

I have a 1997 Audi A4 q that has a common defect with the ignition switch. This is a very well known problem with these cars and because of the defect there has been a recall already done for this car (NHTSA campaign id number 00v317000) as of oct 06,2000. I called the a local dealer and the manufacturer and gave them my VIN # and they claim my car was not part of the recall. However, I went to the NHTSA website and looked at the make, model and year of my car and it does show that the year of my car was included. In fact, I was even able to print off several documents referring to the recall and it does show that my VIN is actually included (VIN ranges wau---8d-va000181 to wau---8d-va294397). Quoting the recall letter; "the plastic ignition switch housing can fracture at the return spring anchor point. Fracture of the housing could cause the return spring force to be insufficient for returning the ignition key to the running position after starting the engine. " this is exactly what has happened to my car () making it unsafe to operate.

10 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Audi A4

Failure Date: 08/26/2005

Problem with ignition switch causing the return spring force to be insufficient for returning the ignition key to the running position after starting the engine, also causing electrical accessories to become inoperative and running down the battery. There was a recall concerning the ignition switch on the exact same year (1996) and model (Audi A4) and regarding the exact same ignition problem. I have spoken with the dealers service department and the manufacturer concerning this problem. The recall they claim does not include my VIN number. However, my car is a 1996 Audi A4 and my vehicle is having the exact same safety problem covered under the recall. The recall #00v317000.

11 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Audi A4

Failure Date: 08/16/2005

The key wouldn't go into the ignition, and then the radio wouldn't go off. Then, the signal lights and the air conditioner wouldn't work. After researching about the recall for the ignition switch contacted the dealer and Audi, and they both said the ignition switch defect, recall 00v317000, had already been fixed, but there was no documentation. Was concerned that if it was already replaced then it should not malfunction within a short period of time.

12 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Audi A4

Failure Date: 08/05/2005

I complied with Audi safety recall js for my 1997 Audi a-4q when notified by Audi to do so by a recall notice. The part that was supplied by Audi(an ignition switch) for the recall subsequently failed in the same manner and with the same effects as those that led to the recall. I replaced the malfunctioning switch at my expense and sought a refund for my out of pocket expenses from Audi customer service, they refused my request and said they had satisfied their obligation to me by removing my ignition switch (that was working fine) and replacing it with a malfunctioning switch as part of Audi safety recall js.

13 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/17/2005

Although the ignition switch of my 1996 Audi A4 was replaced under recall in August 2001, it has the same failure almost exactly 4 years later. The switch neither allows the car to completely shut off nor allows the wipers, lights and indicators to function.

14 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

I own an 1996 Audi A4. Recently, my headlights and taillights have stopped functioning all together at various times. Sometimes they work fine the next minute they wouldn't. One night I almost got rear-ended by another car because my rear taillights were not illuminated. So I took the car to Audi to get the problem taken care of. When I went to Audi, they told me I have a bad ignition switch and said the problem would probably be taken care of with the replacement of the switch. I got the work done and then went on the internet to check any recalls from the NHTSA. A recall #00v317000 came up and described the exact problem I had with my Audi. However, when I called the dealer and Audi they told me the recall did not apply to my VIN #. I found it hard to believe that this hazard was taken care of for a select number of cars but there are still cars out on the roadway that have the same exact problem. I think Audi would have been much more likely to pay for the repairs if that Ford f250 super duty would have placed its v-8 in my passenger's seat as it almost did. It was an awful close call for me and I am having a huge problem with Audi not taking responsibility for their defects.

17 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/09/2004

Recall 00v317000: ignition switch defect. I have a 1997 Audi A4 VIN wauda88dxva147865 that was repaired under the recall in Jan 2004. The symptoms prompting the recall have reoccurred (wipers and light not working due to switch defect). Took car to the dealer who status recall work was warranted for 1 year or 12000 miles so they will not fix at their expense. The vechile is 8 years old this year. Is there any requirement the the recall remendy work? it appears they put in a part that has the same defect that lead to the recall.

18 Ignition Switch problem of the 1998 Audi A4

Failure Date: 04/21/2004

I have had a recent discussion with Audi customer service, file #40182122. This is regarding a defect in my model year 1998 Audi A4 2. 8. Or Audi A4 2. 8 manufactured July of 1997. I researched the web and saw hundreds of similar complaints regarding the ignition switch. My ignition switch got stuck in both the run and later start position. The car would not turn off. Also it caused the climate control not to function properly by not turning on, the screen was black. Upon researching this problem, I saw many other 1998 Audi owners with the same problem. Even more similiar with the fact that we had a 1998 model year car that was manufactured in 1997. The recall campaign # le (00v-317) is a little ambigous stating model years and manufacture dates. My car falls within the manufacture date but not the recall date. It is obvious to any prudent and reasonable person that cars manufactured prior to August of 1997 even though they are model year 1998 have the same problem. I saw some respones to other owners regarding this situation and a resolvement in the matter with Audi including us poor owners who bought a car in the switch of model years. I would like to know how I can resolve this matter as well. How can my car get included in this recall. Please let me know how to proceed. My car is currently being repaire at tom williams Audi in birmingham, al (205) 397-2700.

19 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Audi A4

Failure Date: 01/13/2004

The contact owns a 1997 Audi A4. In January of 2004, the contact was informed of a recall on his vehicle regarding the ignition switch. The dealer performed the recall repair for free; however, the ignition switch failed in 2007. The dealer conducted a visual inspection. A technician stated that because the replacement had been done in 2004, a new ignition switch would not be necessary. On June 9, 2008, the ignition switched failed again. When the failure occurred, the contact was unable to turn off the vehicle. As a result, the battery drained. He took the vehicle to the dealer again and they stated once more that because the vehicle was previously repaired under recall, they were not responsible. The vehicle was repaired at the owner's expense. The recall number was unknown. The failure mileage was 67,487 and current mileage was 141,500.

21 Ignition Switch problem of the 1998 Audi A4

Failure Date: 01/06/2003

The problem: ignition switch return spring there is a problem with my ignition switch. After staring the engine, the return spring does not fully return the key to the run position, causing a malfunction of the headlights and climate control. I have found a recall notice (NHTSA campaign id no. 97v115000) describing this exact problem for Audi A4 vehicles which affects vehicles manufactured between 10/1995 and 8/1997 (my vehicle was built within this time period, on Aug 13th, 1997). I reported this information to Audi customer assurance and they refused to perform the recall because the recall notice does not specify "model year 1998". Please consider expanding the existing recall to cover 1998 vehicles. Comment: obviously, containment of the faulty ignition switch was not limited to 1997 vehicles (note- the problem was not called to their attention until oct 24, 2000. How can containment happen effectively long after the vehicles are delivered to customers?). Audi has not contained the faulty switch to the vehicles specified in the recall.

22 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Audi A4

Failure Date: 08/25/2002

I had a problem identical to the problem described in NHTSA campaign id 00v317000. I had to have the ignition switch replaced and subsequently had to also replace the headlight control assembly as well. Audi USA said that my vehicle was not covered as part of the current campaign. However, I've seen numerous postings on the Audi chat boards from people in my exact position (same problem, same year car - but Audi USA says they're not covered). Seems like it's a little screwy. Please confirm reciept of this message and let me know if there are any next steps I should take. Thanks much.
