1998 manual Audi A4. The temperature was 32 degrees f or below. The conditions were steady snow and wet/icy/slush roads. I experienced complete break failure when exiting the highway to a rest area. I pumped the breaks and regained some breaking power to finally slow the vehicle. I completely missed the proper exiting lane due to lack of breaking. No injuries or damage resulted. This is not the first incident of loss of breaking power.

While driving in suburban traffic, I noticed the brake pedal fully dress when I attempted to slow from about 30 mph. Upon subsequent stops, there was a metal on metal sound. Upon inspection, the right front outer pad had completely detached from backing plate. The car was inspected by Audi only 3k miles earlier and there was no indication of brake pad wear. Neither the dealer nor Audi would acknowledge or accept responsibility.

Complaint received via e-mail. " the abs module malfunctions when the brake pedal is depressed at 30 mph and slower, the pedal begins to thump and kick back at my foot. The noise is so loud that it can be heard over the stereo. Even the rear passengers can hear the noise. I feel as though my stopping distance is extended by this. This is not only annoying but also dangerous in inclement weather conditions. The manufacture has not answer for what causing this. The dealership has done all they could with the equipment supplied by the manufacture. They replaced the module, but don't know if that will fix the problem. Module was not replaced.

The brake squeals 90% of the time being applied, it happened since a few months ago. Brought to a local dealer a few times for the problem and reported with "cannot replicate the problem" and "noise is normal for some brakes", while the problem is actually getting worse and now the brake is making the squealing noise even after releasing the brake and last for one or two seconds - it happened especially after the foot brake was applied for more than 15 seconds and then been released (e. G. After waiting at a red light).
1998 Audi A4 1. 8 liter quattro. Experiencing reduced braking capability when brakes are wet. This is the exact complaint being investigated in NHTSA action number pe00016. The brakes work fine when dry, but effectiveness is greatly reduced when wet, and stopping distance increases significantly, causing a safety concern.
When the brake was applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance.

I have had many close calls in rainy weather when trying to stop in my 1998 Audi A4 1. 8t quattro. In dry weather braking is fine. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. I am more than certain I would have hit someone if I would not keep a greater distance knowing the horrible braking performance in wet weather.
Consumer stated that when braking and without warning they will have bad brake performance during rainy weather causing the vehicle to have extend stopping distance. Dealer notified. Ts.
In searching for complaints filed for 2001 Audi A4's I noticed a number related to very poor braking in wet weather. I experienced the same problem with my 2001 A4. Audi does have a solution for this problem. The rotor backing plates must be replaced with a different design. When I brought it into the dealer for routine service and mentioned the problem no one in the dealership was familiar with the problem. A factory rep. Was visiting the dealership at the time and was familiar with the problem. He ordered new backing plates which, I am told, can only be ordered by a factory rep. It took 3 months for the parts to reach the dealership. I haven't had the problem since the new backing plates were installed.
2002 Audi A4 customer states that failed brakes caused an accident*
the consumer stated that the brakes collapsed upon him trying to apply them. The manufacturer stated the collision must have occurred first, and in the course of the collision, the bracket in which the brake pedal was mounted collapsed, as it was designed to do. (lawyer wrote in on behalf of consumer).

Terrible wet braking performance, the first 1 or 2 pedal applications in the rain cause no slowing down. The pedal needs to be pumped to dry the rotor. I went through several brake pad compounds with no improvement. Of all the Audis that I owned, the A4 brakes are the worst. Hell, these brakes are the worst of all the cars that I owned!.
2006 Audi A4 customer states that the brakes are squeaking very loud and customer wants Audi to fix.
