1999 A4 broken tie rods.
The contact states that he is unable to have a recall 99v248000 repaired without charge. He purchased a used vehicle last week with an outstanding recall, when he took the vehicle to the dealer to have recall repair completed. The manufacturer refused to offer a free remedy. The recall stated that the tie rods would be replaced. The dealer and manufacturer indicated that because there was no damage to the rubber boots the tie rods would not be replaced free of charge. The dealer provided a repair order indicating that the lower control arm was damaged.
Audi north America refusesdto discuss or acknowledge a recall that may be affecting the owners vehicle. The owner identified that the tie rod was faulty through state inspection. And that was visible by vibrating the wheel. The problem was found yesterday by state inspectors on the annual state inspection. The owner had not noticed that the vehicle was driving any different. The owner found it through state inspection. The owner has been on the NHTSA website and checked for recalls. Contacted Audi. And they refused to talk about it about because the owners serial number was not included in the recall. The recall that was issused was the exact same thing that was happening to the owner's car. The owner did not have this corrected yet, but washaving his own mechanic fix it. The mechanic confirmed that the tie rod was faulty. This happened on Thursday, June 16, 2005. This was on the passenger's side front.
The tie rods on my car wore out after only 45k miles. I discovered this when I took the car in for required safety inspection. The repair shop said that this is very common on Audi vehicles, and they replace 4-5 sets per week. I feel that this is obviously a design flaw with Audi and that a recall should be reissued. There was a recall on 98 and 99 Audi tie rods, but it is obvious that there is still a problem. The repair was $250. I feel that this is quite dangerous as I wasnt expecting a malfuntion so soon, especially one that involves such a vital component of vehicular safety.

I received a recall on my 1998 Audi a-4 for a problem with both front suspension lower control arms. When I took it in the dealer said these were okay, but the upper front suspension control arms were bad, and also the steering tie-rods. When I called Audi that it was the upper not the lower control arms that were bad they said they wouldn't do anything because the recall was for the lower. I took it to an independent repair technitian to confirm, which he did. He also said it was dangerous to drive the car with the tie rods in such bad condition. Repair costs are about $500. Because the upper and lower control arms are both part of the same unit and the car does not have high mileage (59,000 miles) I do not feel it is right for me to have bear this cost.
This consumer experienced the same problem as stated in NHTSA recall 99v244000. The tie rods of the steering assembly are protected on each side by a seal to prevent moisture and dust particles from entering the swivel bearing mechanism. It is possible that some tie rod seals may not seal properly. Dealership indicated to the consumer this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. The consumer requested reimbursement.
Tie rods failed just as in recall campain, but I was told my car fell 1 month outside of recall date, nothing done.
Recall campaign 99v248000 concerning tie rod end seal failure. While applying the brakes vibrated severely on the right front side. Dealer inspected the vehicle, and informed the consumer that this recall was not in their data base.

My 1998 Audi A4 tqm has 85k miles onit. I just had all the lower control arms replaced for a second time (first tiem done under recall) becaus eit was creaking and growning. Both tie rodsends and one upper control arm were found to have failed as well. Audi advises these are "wear items" even though the lower control arms wer eoriginally replaced under recall, and have only 45000 miles on them!.
I just recently purchased my car and I took it to Audi dealership to get an oil changed and found out that passenger tire rod needs to be replaced, and I told the mechanic that, is there any recall on this model?, I was told that there is none. . , did my researched and found out that there was a recall on my car (NHTSA campaign id number: 99v248000 ).
While turning consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front tie rods, and it was hard to turn the steering wheel. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the issue.
Nhtsa#00-v-414-000; passenger vehicles. Tie rods of the steering assembly are protected on each side by a seal to prevent moisture and dust particles from entering the swivel bearing mechanism. It is possible that some tie rod seals may not seal properly. Consumer has same problem. However this vehicle was not recalled due to the VIN.
Vehicle was serviced for 60,000 miles - worn tie rod and ball joints reported. Called manufacturer and was told that there were no recalls on the vehicle. Nhtsa says there are recalls.
Nhtsa recall id number: 99v248000 (Sep 13, 1999) I own an 1998 Audi A4 (VIN: waubb28dxwa007916). On 03/11/2003 I had the $1,3000 repair of tie rods and front wheel bearing at houston momentum Audi that seemed to be exactly what is described in the recalls consequences. The Audi of America does not show my vehicle among those subject to the recall. When I called them, they could not provide any reasoning, nor could they reconcile their references with the NHTSA recall. I believe, I should be reimbursed by Audi and would appreciate your help in resolving this matter. Sincerely, vladimir lantsberg.

While driving consumer lost control of vehicle and hit a pole. Upon impact, airbags did deploy, but consumer felt that recall on tie rod could have contributed to this accident.
Inner tie rods were loose and worn out which could eventually cause loss of steering. Recall for this problem, but this vehicle not included.
Stalling at low speeds and idled. Has been in the shop since early may, with no successful repair. Vehicle stalling in traffic is a safety hazard. Audi America contacted, dealer working on car for 30 days. Car stalls and it takes up to 6 cranks of up to 30 seconds each to restart.
Vehicle is experiencing the same defect with the tie rods as stated in recall number 99 v 248 000, but vehicle is not included, cause recall is on the later year vehicle. Please provide more details. Ts.
Audi of north America recalled their 1999 model A4s for failure of the tie rods. I own a 1996 A4 with tie rods that failed and Audi of north America and the dealership refused to repair the damaged tie rods under the recall notice even though the failure was exactly as outlined in the original recall notice sent to all Audi dealers. I read recently in the los angeles times that an owner with a 1998 A4 experienced exactly the same problem. It appears the recall should cover all model years of the A4. I requested and saved the damaged tie rods if you would have interest in seeing them. I believe this problem presents a severe danger to operaters of this vehicle and that this problem should be addressed immediately by Audi. Dt.
Nhtsa recall #99v248000 concerning tie rods. This vehicle is outside of recall scope. Consumer has a file with Audi identifying the failure of the tie rods. Moisture/dust particles are getting inside swivel bearing. He is concerned that vehicle was not included which is now on record with Audi. Case #20253198.
