Four problems related to check engine light on have been reported for the 2011 BMW 328. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I brought my car to a local garage when the check engine light came on. The mechanic had spent over 5 hours taking our car apart once he found that some of the bolts on the camshaft were broken and had fallen in the engine as far as the oil pan. I called BMW and they said that although there was an extended recall on this that the would not cover any of the expenses for this major repair which was over $5500! they would have covered the repair if I brought the car into one of their service centers. I would have had to pay my local garage thousands of dollars to give me the car in pieces and have is towed to BMW. I told my mechanic to complete the repair and I would attempt to fight BMW. Contacting you is my first step in fight BMW. I will also look into a class action that may have started against them and join it.
The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to hendrix BMW located at 6950 e. Independence blvd, charlotte, nc 28227, to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 153,653.
Vehicle showed check engine light and was idling rough during commute. Engine shutoff/stalled while stopped at a stoplight. Was able to restart and return home, but idle remained rough. Attempted to drive to repair shop on another day, idle was rough upon engine start and check engine light remained on. Car again stalled at an intersection while stopped at a red light. Engine would not re-start and vehicle required a tow to get it to shop. Dealership service center explained that vanos bolts had sheared and is the exact issue described in BMW recall campaign vanos sib 14v-176. In spite of my vehicle matching the make, model, year, and engine type described in the recall, BMW informed me that my VIN was not showing any recall. It appears BMW of north America has either intentionally or through negligence omitted certain vehicle vins from the recall bulletin, even though they are subject to the malfunction specified (shearing of vanos bolts).
A letter from BMW came in June 2014 stating that my vehicle is effected for important safety recall and that I would be notified when the parts become available to have it fixed. The recall was for vanos assembly bolts. The letter states that I may hear increased noise, check engine light may come on leading to reduced power leading to engine stall. I noticed on this website many people have had similar complaints and leading to steering wheel to lock and engine to shut off which can lead to injury and death of anyone on the roads. I have called my dealer as well BMW headquarters and both state that they have no idea when the parts will become available. So for now I have to drive a car with a safety recall and I can do nothing about it other than hope I don't cause an accident due to my car malfunctioning. This is criminal of BMW and needs to be addressed. I asked them if I could bring my car in and have a loaner instead till the parts become available but was turned down, unless I want to pay out of my own pocket.
