1 Battery Cable problem of the 2011 BMW 328

Failure Date: 08/28/2020

Car would not start, did not respond to charging via jumper cables earlier that day. It started when connected to the charger by the tow truck operater. I was told to drive for 30-45 min by the BMW service center and the tow driver. While driving on a city street about 35 min later everything stopped, lights, electrical and engine. I was stranded in the middle of the road. I called police to help with traffic control as well as insurance for roadside assistance. Could not move the vehicle due to it was locked in place. And no hazard lights either. Had to call another tow truck. BMW service states it is the battery cable and will cost $3000. 00 to fix.

5 Battery Cable problem of the 2008 BMW 328

Failure Date: 06/24/2017

On June 24th 2017 as I was backing out of my driveway at my house in my 2008 certified pre-owned BMW 328xi, the car was in motion, with my 3 year old son and he noticed smoked coming from the vents. I turned my head around to see what he was talking about and noticed smoke billowing from the vents and glove box area. I immediately unbuckled him from his car seat and told him to get out. I exited the vehicle, dialed 911, and got him to a safe distance. I could see an electrical fire (based on location and smell) coming from under the passenger side dash board near the glove box, within 4 minutes the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. Luckily no one was physically injured. The fire investigator says the fire originated from the glove box area where a fuse panel and battery cable are located as identified in the fire report attached. It is my belief that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction at the fuse panel located under the glove box. I did some research and in 2013 there was a recall (NHTSA campaign number: 13v044000) for the vehicles power cable attached to the fuse box that was fixed; however, I believe that it was either fixed improperly by BMW or the recall didn't fix the issue.

6 Battery Cable problem of the 2009 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/22/2017

While driving on the interstate, I accelerate and without warning, dashboard lights up with "service engine soon" and various other lights, power steering goes out, and I have to maneuver car across lanes of oncoming traffic to a safe shoulder. I turn on hazards, remove key and wait several minutes. The car turns over but doesn't start. I wait longer, turn off hazards, re-insert key and car starts up. I am able to continue driving, but avoid hard throttle. This happened 2 months ago, and I took it to a licensed mechanic who diagnosed as faulty fuel pump and replaced it. The car then had vacuum leak followed by a complete replacement of valve cover. The issue I experienced on the interstate was identical to what occurred before those repairs were done and bears a striking resemblance to issues described in the 2013 battery cable recall, yet my VIN # is not included.

8 Battery Cable problem of the 2008 BMW 328

Failure Date: 07/08/2016

6 weeks ago my car lost all power. I had the car towed to a mechanic that has worked on and repaired my car before. They replaced the fuse box and all fuses ($678. 00) which didnt fix the car. Because they were at an impasse with the repairs I had the car towed to BMW mercedes specialist ($110. 00). My car has been at the second shop for a month. . . . It still will not start. So, this weekend I got online and did some digging about the 2008 BMW 328i repair history. As it turns out there was a recall on the battery cable in March on 2013. I bought the car is Jan. 2013. Did not receive or was I made aware of the recall. So now I am out $1000. 00 not to mention what I owe the second repairs shop. And BMW USA informs me that I now have to have the car towed at my expense to a BMW dealership. . . And have the cable repaired there to have the repair covered by BMW. First of all BMW is liable to have informed me of the recall. . . Which they did not. So, its my understanding by law I have to be completely remedied monetarily by BMW for all and any costs related to the recall. BMW is trying to strong arm me into bringing my car to them. My car is already taken apart at the second mechanics shop. . . . I have already been without my car for 6 weeks. Please review my situation and advise me of my rights. And the laws that apply to this recall.

9 Battery Cable problem of the 2009 BMW 328

Failure Date: 03/28/2016

While driving back from gulf shores alabama my headlights started flickering on and off while driving on the highway the power went off on the radio lights on the dashboard went off the steering wheel locked up and an sos button came on. The windshield wipers stopped and it was torrential rains and total darkness on interstate 75. When I could see well enough to get over to the brim I googled the codes that were flashing and was given further instruction on how to get my car started again. The headlights flickering on and off and visibility ( with the rain ) was impossible. Several various codes continued to pop up and this happened until we arrivd at our destination. It was if the whole computer board had gone haywire . Every code imaginable came on and we had to stop to figure out what to do to get the car going. Since then my BMW will not start unless the battery is charged. It says battery discharging or battery was disconnected so I have to keep battery cables with me at all times. So last night I'm having the airbag code come on which I do have a recall on that, as well. I have taken several pictures of the various codes involved which I will attach.

In addition, while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The engine warning light illuminated and engine malfunction was displayed across the message board. The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic who diagnosed that the valve coil, the spark plugs, and the valve gasket covers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign number: 13v044000 (electrical system); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 73,025. 12 Battery Cable problem of the 2008 BMW 328

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

On the afternoon of November 10th, while driving, a red light with a passenger restraint system malfunction message lit up on the dashboard. I brought the car into the dealer the next day and they said they had to order the part. They were unable to turn the light off, which affected my ability to retrieve time and temperature on the dashboard reader. They had to order the part, which was replaced on November 26th. The part is called sop battery safety terminal (battery cable plus pole). I was told that the wires tested as "broken intermittently. " I was told that when this battery cable works correctly it will shut off the gas pump so that there was no danger of fire. I was concerned about driving the car even when the driver side seemed to be all right, because if gas leaked the whole car would be on fire, not just the passenger side. Since there was a recall of the airbag system, I thought this might be also related. The dealer said he had seen this before on other cars but he could not say how many. I am grateful that this could be fixed before any accident occurred.

13 Battery Cable problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

I was leaving my place of employment when the vehicle cut out with no electrical power and the engine died. It restarted and I went home. The next morning the vehicle had no power and would not start. Upon investigation, the battery in the trunk had 12. 60 volts and the fuses at the power distribution center/box had only 2. 80 volts. With a screw driver I moved the large red battery cable going to the back of the pdc and all the lights came on. I subseqeuntly removed the pdc and inspected the main power lead. The terminal was corroded has a relatively loose fit and just clips to the back of the pdc, even though it is a large gauge wire.

In June of 2011 my Bmw328i had intermittent start. I sent the vehicle to a dealer for service in fremont. I was told that the vehicle did not start because of the battery. Battery was replaced at this time. Two days later, the vehicle did not start again, after testing it was determined by fremont dealer that the problem was a faulty negative battery cable. After cable replacement, today problem occurs again.

16 Battery Cable problem of the 2007 BMW 328

Failure Date: 04/20/2007

In October of 2009 my leased vehicle did not start, I had the vehicle towed to a dealer for service in detroit. I was told that the vehicle did not start because of the battery. Battery was replaced at this time. In January of 2010 the vehicle did not start again, after testing it was determined that the steering column was defective. This was replaced at my expense. In April of 2010 the vehicle did not start for a third time. I contacted a dealer to have the vehicle towed in; after 5 days the dealer identified the problem as a faulty negative battery cable. I contacted BMW na as I felt that this may have been the original issue and reason for the vehicle not starting. After two weeks of "investigation" BMW na contacted me and stated that due to mileage on the vehicle no assistance would be granted the vehicle is still under lease and was sold to me as a demo vehicle with roughly 9000 miles already on it at time of lease inception.
