On the way home yesterday a red warning light "steering wheel with a pad lock on the top left corner" came on, after parking at home I got the manual out and found that this is an electric steering-wheel lock fault and now the car will not start. This is an issue with most BMW's manufactured between years 2006 to 2007. I learned about the issue when I did a search in BMW forum's. Both european and north american markets are effected with this fault.

Before any prompts on the navigation screen ever came up, I would often sometimes smell something burning or giving off a hot rubber smell which I addressed as soon I purchased the vehicle from queens auto mall auction, they said it was nothing to worry about if I did not see the check engine light on. While I was driving my BMW 328 xi 2011 the car suddenly lost power and a fuel pump malfunction display prompted on my navigation screen. The car stopped on a bridge in the left lane without me being able to pull over. The car would not start up again at all after several attempts. I waited about 30 minutes and the car started up again. I drove it back home 5 min away and got my vehicle towed to the BMW of manhattan where they say they took care of the problem. Once I picked up the vehicle, I drove for approximately 25-30 minutes before the same exact thing happened again and I was barely able to switch into the right lane so I can pull over and have another tow come and take my car to BMW of manhattan just an hour after I had it serviced. I had the recall for the pcv valve heater replaced at that service so I know the same fire/rubber burning smell can't possibly be from that valve recall. I have seen online many people have the same problem with their 3 series, and I am concerned this may be an underlying issue with all 3 series BMW 2006-2011. In both of these separate instances I was driving and was very scared that I could have gotten into a serious car accident in new york city.
Tl- the contact owns a 2013 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the oil pump and drivetrain warning light illuminated. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal the vehicle violently jerk then stalled as a result the contact sustained injuries to the brest but did not required medical attention. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle but it failed to start. The contact was in heavy traffic and was not able to coast to the side of the road. The highway patrol and bridge authority had the vehicle towed to rallye BMW located at 1 brush hollow rd, westbury, NY 11590 (516) 393-0000 where it was diagnosed that the oil pump and drivetrain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repaired fees. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer further assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 67,000. The VIN was not available. Aw.
BMW would not start causing me to jump start my car. Upon starting my car, message on screen says that steering wheel lock malfunction. This happened today, may 18,2018 at 3:30. The car was stationary.
As I came to a stop at a red light the screen showed red saying transmission issues take to nearest repair facility ASAP I drove thru intersection about 1000 ft made a u-turn to get off road turned car off for safety and car would not restart had to have it towed to nearest dealer where I was informed 4 days later that their diagnostics said it has had at least 2 faults on battery and possibly 3 faults on transmission it will cost $2500. Plus to repair depending on what they find now my issue is that I just purchased this car 84 days prior to this thinking that all I've heard is how great a vehicle these are dependable, sharp, etc. Foolish me since my purchase I had to get a new gas cap no problem replace front brakes and noticed that front passenger door doesn't unlock or lock with auto key trunk doesn't open from inside vehicle just little annoying things the fox report came with no reports of accidents but not the case when replacing brakes showing signs of accident so here I sit with a car parked in my driveway that I'm afraid to drive because I can't afford to fix for possibly 6 months inconvenient perplexed disappointed just todays feelings I don't think I would recommend this brand of vehicle to anyone. Because I was going for a weekend trip with friends plans already set we were forced to rent a car to get thru weekend at a cost of $130. And then it costs me $ 163. For diagnostics and an additional $399. To have it towed back to my residence because I couldn't afford repair work at this time this vehicle only has 83,000 miles to have this many issues just doesn't set right with me. So from BMW's viewpoint how can I get these issues resolved without going bankrupt.
I was driving my car one day, I made a quick stop, turned my vehicle off and went back to my car to start it and nothing. Only to find the steering lock light. My vehicle would not start no other indication of power beside interior light. I think this presents an unsafe condition, that would leave people stranded some where (thank god it wasn't my wife and 4 kids stranded with the car). Needless to say I had to get it towed to a BMW service. I am really shocked that their is not already a recall for this, with the high amount of cases I have read about on forums. I pray something can be done about this.
The contact owns a 2008 BMW 328xi. On several occasions, while driving, the rpm needle dropped and then returned to normal. The vehicle shook and stalled. On several other occasions, the vehicle failed to start. The contact mentioned that the passenger side air bag and seat belt indicator illuminated. The contact was concerned that due to NHTSA campaign number: 16v071000 (air bags), the passenger side air bags could also be defective. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the key needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The dealer was not notified. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 13v044000 (electrical system). The contact was concerned that the stalling would occur and could cause a crash. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall for the electrical system and no parts were available for the air bag recall. The manufacturer informed the contact that she would receive a notification letter when the part was available. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

The electrical is the main issue. Nothing stars. The car don't turn on, won't even lock and it random happened. I went to work and it seemed like everything was fine but when I clocked out . . My car wouldn't even start. I check my battery & it was fine. Then I checked online & I noticed that I wasn't even the only person dealing with this issue.
I attempted to start the car by inserting the key and hitting the start button. Instantaneously, all power has been lost in the car. The car cannot be jumpstarted. I had a previous slow start during cold weather and the battery was replaced aprox. 3 weeks prior to this incident. I also believe I smelled something electrical 2 days prior to this incident. There has been a recall 13v-044, which looks related to my current issue. The recall includes cars in my make, model, year. However my VIN number does not show the recall relates to my car. I contacted BMW customer service for an explanation as to why my car is not included and they simply responded that it does not include my VIN. I need to understand why my individual car is not part of this recall.

Out of no where the car didn't want to start up any more. It was parked in my driveway. At first I thought it was the battery but it wasn't. I had it checked out and they didn't know why it couldn't start. I checked online and then I noticed that there's been a recall for 3 series BMW due to electrical problems and I noticed that a lot of people were in my shoes.
The contact owns a 2009 BMW 328i. While stationary, the vehicle would not start when prompted. The vehicle was diagnosed as having an electrical failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

After, I parked my car in the garage. (nothing out of the ordinary, daily routine, normal conditions). My car wouldn't start. It displayed a "power steering wheel locked" icon warning when I tried to start the ignition. The ignition spark wasnt there. The lights also dimmed as I tried to get started.
Several times throughout the day after the car was parked, it was difficult to start and he battery indicator came on a few times. The final time after driving from connecticut to queens NY, I was in a friends driveway after dropping them off from the airport, the car would not start even thought the lights were working. Eventually all power was lost. I had to have car pushed out if the driving and on to the street. Also to note earlier I was charging my cell phone, but it stopped charging. I went and purchase a new charged (usb adaptor) which did not work either, but worked when I hooked it up to the computer. The tow truck person was not able to get the car started with a jump, and indicated that it appeared to be an electrical issues. I reviewed the internet to see what the problem could be since my car has such low milage, and noticed there was a recall on my vehicle year and model from February 2013. I don't know if this is the same, but it sounds similar.
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328xi. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle the entire electrical system malfunctioned, locking all of the windows and doors. The vehicle would not start once the system malfunctioned. The contact had to wait 48 hours in order to restart the vehicle. The contact did not take the vehicle to a dealer. The failure mileage was 85,000. The VIN was not available.
Electric steering lock light on my 2007 BMW 328i coupe comes up in red and car won't start. . . Initially thought it was the battery but after getting a jump start and the power flickered off and on different features in the car the car never started, the key fob kept being rejected from the ignition box and the car eventually went dead. I had to manually lock and unlock doors and left it sitting over night. The car was jump start again the next day and radio, lights, trunk, door locks, and seat belts, etc. Appear to be working fine electronically but the car still would not start. . . The brakes feel tight and the steering column is tight but clicks when turn left and right (feels semi-engaged if that's possible). . . Was wondering if the battery is just low and doesn't trigger the steering wheel lock? should we disconnect the battery and reconnect or replace to see if it triggers the electric steering wheel lock? the issue with the battery has happened on several other occasions and the steering wheel lock light came up yellow however the car started in the past after jump starting. This appears to be a known problem and I?m formally complaining if this is the case for I?m trying to avoid any unnecessary costly repairs such as replacing the steering column or reprogramming in any way possible if a known fix is available or faulty product is the cause. I also feel this is definitely a potential safety hazard :-/.
There is a defect with the electronic steering wheel lock. The warning light came on, but the car functioned normally despite the owner's manual saying the car would not start. I thought it was a defective light, until I tried to start my car one morning. The electronic steering wheel lock would not disengage, and I had to get the car towed. It appears to be a complex problem as BMW dealer mechanincs can only tell me that the steering column needs to be replaced. They will not tell me why it needs to be replaced or what is causing the problem. Estimates for repair have been between $1300 and $1800 depending on the dealer. I understand that cars break down but, after visiting BMW forums on the internet, it is plain to see that this is a known defect that BMW refuses to fix. One posting did indicate that the steering wheel locked up while the car was being driven causing a dangerous situation, but, in my case, the car was parked. This defect does pose to car owners a great inconvenience with possible unsafe consequences depending on the circumstances surrounding the car owner getting stranded. Furthermore, once stranded, the owner has little choice but to get it towed most likely to a BMW dealership and pay the large repair bill. (I tried an indy BMW specialist first. He could not fix it or even determine why it was occurring. ) I am filing this complaint in the hope that any subsequent investigation by the NHTSA will reveal that BMW has let a known defect persist. Once that is discovered, BMW should be required to fix the defect and reimburse owners who have had to pay for a costly repair.
Through out the past month I have had my car towed three times with five occurances of the care not cranking and the electrical system shutting down leaving me stranded. Over the past year the airbag light has come on at least once a month for less than 5-10 minutes at the time. The first instance it was towed BMW of mobile replaced the battery after several days of trouble shooting even though I had had our local police department check the battery to be sure that that was not the issue. They charged me over five hundred dollars for this battery. Two days after the battery was replaced I had it towed again to BMW of mobile because the car would not crank again and the lights etc. Would come on. They kept the car for over 5 days running test then stated that "nothing was wrong. " I told them that I would not have had it towed if nothing was wrong. Two days later it would not crank again when my 3 year old daughter and I were at a late local highschool football game. This time they said that it was an electrical wire on the passenger side causing the problem causing something to melt near the fuse panel($1,200) to replace).
BMW 328xi sportwagon car power lost sporadically while car is in use. 1st time, car stopped at stop sign, when attempting to pull off, car turned off. All power lost only available function - brakes. 2nd time, same day as 1st incident, car moving approx 50mph, hit a bump, all car power lost. Only available feature, brakes. Car would not restart for approx 2. 5 hours. Occurred in construction zone, so car and driver sitting in traffic lane. Unsure what was fixed. Supposedly some part near gas pump hole that leaked - corrosion on computer - replaced. 3rd time - car cut off while traveling 10 mph making right hand turn. Brakes worked only. D/t loss of power steering, car stopped in oncoming traffic lane. Replaced "fuel/air intake" modulator? not sure of the name. Old part was at dealership. 4th time - car cut off while making left hand turn in busy intersection at approx 15 mph. Entire onboard computer replaced. 5th time - traveling approximately 25mph. While crossing railroad tracks, car cut off - restarted immediately. Has not yet been repaired. All repairs done under manufacturers warranty. Parts may still be available at dealership. Each incident between 2-4 weeks apart. Dealership kept car during last repair for 6 weeks. Still unable to repair. Regional rep called and serviced car as well. Numerous parts replaced at this point, without resolution. Very big safety issue for obvious reasons. Date of 1st incident 3/9/2010. Date of most recent incident 5/26/2010.
