10/07/18 driving back from florida an hour into my ride on a 90 degree day, I had my senior great dane in my car returning to atlanta. The ac stopped, I could hear it behind the dash, blowing full force, but nothing coming out of the vents. Being Sunday, no-one could advise on a temporary solution, called BMW sos and roadside assistance, they could do nothing. I thought it could be possible the coils froze up, like in your home, I shut the ac off completely and had to drive with the windows down. This corrected the problem, briefly. I had to continue on a 4 hour drive in this heat with my senior dog, miserable is an understatement . I lease my car, it is perfectly maintained and had just been in for service. Monday I called the service center and they knew exactly what the issue was, essentially froze up and they had a solution, a manual override of the software. Thankful they had a solution but more concerning, BMW is aware of this issue, as I found out on many posts. The concerning part, I have never taken my car on a drive longer than an hour except this time and the ac goes out, this is not acceptable in a luxury vehicle. They need to notify their customers this is a possibility and that they have a solution, I would have never taken this car on a trip knowing it was endangering my senior dog, what if it was a child? BMW should notify their customers of this occurring so people can be aware and make informed decisions before risking and awful drive. Upon emailing BMW corp, the customer service person states this has happened to her and she shut her car off for 20 min and then it was fine, so this is a known problem, but not known to owners until you are inconvenienced and endangered. I was in the middle of a two lane road with no cell service, and I am to shut my car off in this heat with my dog? absurd .

Electronic door locks failed to unlock thus trapping myself in the car. No mechanical override exists to manually unlock the doors. I had to roll the window down and climb out through the window. The 4 door sedan has small windows and I hurt myself (pulled muscles and joints) climbing out. If the windows failed (they did not), I would have had to break the windows and then climb out. Elderly or handicapped occupants would not be able to get out! any power failure will trap occupants since no mechanical override exists!.

I am unable to open/unlock the driver's side door. Other doors are fine but I would be trapped in case of fire or accident. Door does unlock through manual key (not fob).
The electrical door lock failed and prevented the driver's door to unlock from the inside causing the driver to be trapped inside the car. There is no manual way to unlock car door from inside.
The potential safety hazard reported in this complaint takes place when the passengers cannot exit the car by opening the doors, getting trapped inside the car. It will worsen to a critical level when this failure happens with passengers with limited mobility inside the car or in case there is a baby sitting in a child seat installed in the rear seat. When the described failure mode happens, all passengers will need to exit the vehicle through the sun roof (if available) or through the windows. In case of fire this could be a lethal safety hazard for all passengers. And in case of voluminous persons sitting in seats others than the driver's seat, it will be very difficult for them to exit the vehicle. How the failure happened: after driving for aprox. 10 minutes and having parked, the doors of the car did not unlock. They did not unlock either using the fob, neither the door handle of the driver's door nor the unlock button in the central dashboard. The only way to get out of the vehicle was through the sun roof or climbing out the window. After several attempts the driver's door finally unlock and could be opened. Once outside the car, I could lock and unlock the driver's door (but not any other door) manually with the metal key inside the fob. The other passenger had to exit the car through the driver's door. I have been to a BMW dealership and I made an appointment to repair it. The root cause of the issue seems to be a blown fuse due to over current in one of the actuators of one of the doors. The effect is that the passengers cannot come out of the car as there is not any manual mechanism to unlock. There is other complaints in NHTSA about the same issue (for example NHTSA id number: 10459121). I recommend that NHTSA conducts a safety investigation about this potential safety risk on this or any other affected model.
