BMW 328 owners have reported 29 problems related to wiper (under the visibility category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW 328 based on all problems reported for the 328.
Wiring inside headlamp is not up to standards. For the cost the replace the headlight the wiring should not be falling apart causing shorts. One night I was driving and got a warning on my dash for my headlights and noticed it was a bit harder to see. Pulled over and noticed the headlight was out. Went to replace the bulb and noticed the wires have zero protection on them and are all touching. . This is not safe as wire shorts can cause a fire and not to mention the visibility issues. The driver side is not the bright at all and flickers while I’m driving. Both sides are having this issue and that’s unacceptable saying the headlights are over 800 dollars each and that’s used. . I do not feel safe driving this vehicle knowing that the wire short can cause a fire while I’m driving.

Previously reported on February 20, 2024. Nhtsa #1157301 rdc failure caused complete loss of all dashboard functions except the radio - loss of lights/turn signals/ speedometer/ tachometer/ hvac etc. Received a call from BMW customer service today February 26,2024 at 4:38 est duration 17 minutes. BMW informed me the conversation was recorded. I request that NHTSA obtain the transcript for that telephone call. This note will be sent to BMW with request to send a transcript of the call to NHTSA. BMW custom relations representative was polite. Her purpose for the call - "to inform me that BMW is cooperating with NHTSA". The person assigned had no useful information nor could she obtain any information to answer questions. Though BMW documents all reported parts failures and complications, she had no ability to provide information relevant to the rdc module problems. The call was useless from an owners viewpoint. It did not improve customer relations. The vanos recall was also discussed. Nhtsa: #23v-707 recall notification October 2023 BMW has not provided a date when the repair will be available. Vanos bolt problems were identified for my vehicle in 2014!!! a 10 year warranty without mileage limitation was created but BMW owners were not notified - unless engine failure occurred and the car presented to a BMW dealership. I am more than frustrated that repairs have not been initiated. The local BMW dealership would like to repair the car but cannot proceed without corporate approval. Parts are indeed available locally. BMW has been aware of the problems for a decade. Furthermore, the valve cover gasket has been replaced twice since 2014. The vanos bolts were never inspected. The valve cover was replaced last at 149,000 miles. A mechanic advised replacing the vanos bolts but did not inspect them. Cost of repair $1500. I declined. Abysmal customer service!.

Tire pressure yellow warning light on. Rdc module ordered but repair not completed. After starting the car at a gas station, multiple warning lights appeared in red including "car on a raised lift in red" which signifies car is to be taken directly for service. Drove to local mechanic one mile away. While observing the car with engine running at idle, all dashboard lights and functions stopped: no speedometer, no tachometer, no warning lights, no turn signals, no headlights, rdc module subsequently replaced with resolution of the problem. Opening the old rdc module demonstrated significant green corrosion - likely occurred over a long period of time. If the loss of all dashboard function had occurred while driving, it would have presented very dangerous safety issues. Situation reviewed with local BMW dealership and BMW corporate customer relations. No recalls or warnings have been issued. Expressed my concerns in detail. This is a potentially dangerous problem for the BMW e90 models. The rdc module is located in the passenger rear wheel well and repeatedly exposed to wet/ snow/ slush conditions. This is a dangerous location outside the vehicle for the rdc module. The tire pressure monitor system is a non-critical function. Repair of the rdc module is considered optional - yellow warning light. This event demonstrates that there is a serious risk when the rdc module is not functioning properly. BMW should make owners aware and offer replacement before dangerous events occur.
The electrical keeps shutting off and own after hitting speed bumps. It shuts off all power on hvac windows seats and the odometer. I have heard this same issue with many owners.
I was driving on the freeway at 70mph, the indicated speed limit. It was cloudy, drizzling rain. No large vehicles near me. All of a sudden it sounded like a gunshot went off right above my head. I had the panoramic sunshade closed so I couldn't see anything, but my first thought was that the glass of the panoramic sunroof had shattered. After 5 more minutes of driving (so I could safely get home), I parked the car and stepped out of the door and looked at the roof. Sure enough, the front of the two pieces of glass had shattered right in the middle, about 150 square inches open to the sky, and dozens of pieces of broken glass had fallen in between the interior sunroof shade and where the glass was supposed to be. Thank goodness I had the shade closed, otherwise the pieces of glass would have landed on me and my girlfriend (who was sitting in the passenger seat. ) there was no hail, no lightning, and no loose rocks from any vehicles in front of me. It was about 82 degrees fahrenheit, so not abnormally warm.

Unable to unlock/lock doors on car (obviously very worrisome), unable to use turn signals, no interior lighting controls or functionality. Unable to control headlights, they still do turn on but I cannot control them. Cannot adjust any mirrors electronically. Some speedometer lighting affect or but the dials do still work, cannot see all buttons inside interior due to electrical issue. Problem: footwell control module (frm) needs replacement costing around $1300 to do minimum from dealer. This module controls all of the functions above and has gone bad. This frm module is hidden and not easily gotten to tells me something like a fuse needs to be installed just in case a power surge from the car happens so the car does not break this very expensive equipment. Looked into it online and apparently this happens very often and one guy had to have his replaced twice. This is an obvious issue that will require a remedy.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? footwell module. Computer system that controls turn signals, headlights, highbeams, windows, door locks etc. Yes it is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I can't use my turn signals, highbeams, headlights, windows. I can't signal my cars lane changes or see clearly at night. I can't roll the windows down or up which creates a unsafe hazard. My child is able to climb out of the window in the back seat while I'm driving. I have zero control over the windows. I can't determine if my child's door is open or closed when the car is in motion. My car doors no longer lock at all. My child can open up the door at any moment that the car is in motion. I'm unable to see at night without my highbeams. I'm now forced to drive with reduced visibility. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? both by a dealership and independent shop. There have been reconcurring warrantee coverages offered but no recalls despite the clear determinant to safety. Common usage of the vehicle at this point in time is a safety concern of all surrounding users and transportation vehicles. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? the manufacturer has inspected this module concern. I'm very sure that there have been accidents associated with this module malfunction. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? there are zero signs of this issue prior to it's failure. The failure had no warning.
Some of the BMW footwell module for the e7x to e9x models containing a defective microchip that upon jump-start of the vehicle when the battery level is low would corrupt its memory. When corruption occurs, the car will disable turning signal blinkers, power windows, internal lights, and more. Those affected function will render the vehicle unsafe to drive. BMW has issued an extended warranty to cover the part, but only for owners who run into the problem (jump-started) within that time frame is covered. I did not realize this infamous defect until recently and BMW failed to inform me of this issue proactively. I'm the original owner. After I read hundreds of articles online, this is a part that warrants a broder recall.

I was entering the highway at 65mph, there were no cars in front or behind me and no bridges above me, once I got to around 70mph my sunroof exploded outwards with extreme force for no reason, I could not find a rock or gravel and I do not believe glass will shatter outwards when broken from the outside.
Footwell module failed. This is a known issue by BMW. Device controls accessory lighting, central locking system, turn signals, and power windows. BMW si b01 20 16 released extending warranty on frm to 10 years, 152000 miles. Frm on my vehicle failed at 195,000. Total replacement cost was $1,000.
Front side passenger window regulator stopped working and the cable snapped while stopped at a red light causing the window to fall down into the door. Window will no longer roll up and I'm forced to put a garbage bag to cover the open window which is a safety hazard when driving. I no longer have visibility on my right hand side when driving.

My sunroof shattered while driving on the interstate to work which caused a loud noise and shards of glass to enter my car. I did not see anything that would have hit the sunroof to cause it to shatter. I have seen other complaints about exploding sunroofs and I wanted to share my story as well. Fortunately my son was not in my car or he would have likely had glass hit him since most of what entered the car landed in the backseat.

Footwell module failure caused the turn signals, interior lights, power windows to fail to operate. The failure occurred when a mechanic tried to run diagnostics on the vehicle during routine service.
When tire pressure management system begins to fail, its rdc module takes down the complete dashboard monitoring and operational systems. Upon failure, the rdc affects speedometer, tachometer, radio, blower, wipers, idrive systems. Driver has no indicators of turn signals or lighting (even if functional) within the cabin of the car. This occurred in driving sequence as first a series of flashes and idrive restarts, then complete blanking out of all dashboard systems. Upon advisement of repair tech, simple unplug of rdc clears all dashboard symptoms except tpms malfunction indicator. A car should not simply have a complete electronic monitoring and operational (radio, blower, turn indicators, wipers) failure due to one monitoring system going down -- this is a design flaw and could have led to me having an accident easily due to no turn or speed indicators available.
Glass sunroof exploded while driving on the highway at about 80mph. Glass shattered and fell onto me (driver), the passenger seat, console, and back seat. There were no other cars around me at the time, and there was no debris on the road. It was a clear day, on a clear road. I was driving straight, on a smooth stretch of highway, no bumps on the road, and the road was clear. Tiny shard of glass caused a minor cut on palm of hand, otherwise no injuries to report.
The rear view mirror ball and socket joint is loose. The rear view mirror can move out of the set position by its own weight, particularly when warm, or when driving over bumps. This impares the ability to use the mirror when driving.
Tl-the contact owns a 2011 BMW 328-I. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph noticed the that windshield had a cracked that extended for about 8 inches. The contact called a glass replacement company to have the windshield replaced. The independent technician advised the contact that there were many complaints about the failure he had experience that it was not caused by road debris. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repair. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. Bp.
I've gone through 3 windshields in 2 months ,2 through my insurance and the 3rd through BMW ,early morning and late afternoon the windshield is covered with tiny sparkles, this was noticed by me the next day on all 3 ,so it has nothing to do with road debri, on line there are many people complaining about this and no one knows what to do ,it is a safety issue with the sun hitting it.
While driving down a straight road at 50 mph, a very loud pop was heard almost like an explosion. I pulled to the side of the road and noticed the entire sunroof had shattered. It was a clear day with temps in the 70's. No other vehicles were in the vicinity at time of event. No road debri was noted on roadway. The glass appeared to be pushed out like it was caused by a pressure difference. At the time of event, all the windows were up with the a/c on. Pieces of the glass had flown back and scratched the paint down to metal on both the roof and trunk-lid. I had my two small kids in the back seat at the time and they were both terrified after hearing the noise. Luckily the shade cover was in place and no glass entered the passenger space. BMW is not willing to investigate the incident or cover the cost.
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328i. While driving 70 mph, the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated and the windshield wipers started to activate independently. The contact also stated that the ignition had difficulty switching into the on position. The contact also stated that the door locks would also work independently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in park and off, all four windows independently rolled down. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,140. Djr.
The car was stopped at a red light and went is to sleep mode. It was a very heavy and steady rain. When I took my foot of the brake the car started up again but the windshield wipers were in mid stroke across the glass. They froze. I attempted to turn them off and on again. I pulled over into a parking lot and turned the car off, attempted to manually reset/move the wipers and they would not move. After sitting for two hours waiting for a tow truck the wipers started to move again.
The contact owns a 2012 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the windshield wipers suddenly became inoperable when the vehicle switched from eco mode to normal drive mode independently. The contact shut off the vehicle and once restarted, the wipers remained inoperable. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 29,000.

The contact also stated that there would be abnormal burning odor in the vehicle. The contact also stated that the front windows would not roll up or down and that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis, however the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 35,000. Wh.
The I drive completely failed leaving the screen black at this time I had no audio,no hands free telephone no way to change any settings on the vehicle. Went to BMW dealership and was told it was an overtemp code and that BMW was aware that there were problems and engineers were working on it but at the time there is nothing they can do to correct the problemtthis car only has 12,300 miles on it and still under warranty. There were 3 other cars there with the same problem. All cars had low mileage. I feel this is a very dangerous situation that BMW is aware of but chooses to do nothing about it. I am also concerned that this could be a fire hazard.
I was driving home on the highway during a rainstorm when the 4x4, breaks warning came on. The handling immediately was affected. I didnt feel the traction I was used to and breaking became dangerous. I wanted to pull over but the breaks made the car stop too abruptly, causing me to skid on the wet road. Had the highway been busier I'm sure I would've been in a serious accident. I consider myself very lucky. I took my car to a local mechanic. I was told that it was the transfer case actuator gear. It's plastic and the intense heat causes it to fail. I was told this problem is very common. . . . So much that the replacements are made of of a different composite and more heat resistant. My question is why do I have to pay for a gear that is recognized as faulty. If the replacements are better than the original then obviously BMW recognizes that too. This is becoming way to common for BMW not to react.
